James Monroe Shockley was born August 5th, 1935, in Benton, IL and entered eternal rest on December 31st, 2021, in Oklahoma City, OK surround by his family.

He was enlisted in the United States Army where he served with the Wolfhound regiment and spent time in Korea during the Korean War. Upon returning to the U.S., he attended the University of Southern Illinois where he obtained an electronics engineering degree and went to work for the Federal Aviation Administration where he would retire some forty years later.

Jim married Marie Moore on November 26th, 1958 in the Shockley Family home in Benton, Illinois. They relocated on FAA orders to Cold Bay, Alaska in 1968. In 1972 they moved to Anchorage and spent thirty years making it their home.

Jim enjoyed road tripping, which often included riding Amtrak, with his wife across the United States, visiting family scattered across the U.S., and spending the summers back in Alaska after retirement.

James is survived by his children Janita (Garth) Griffith, Dwight (Leah) Shockley; Grandsons Collin and Mitchell Shockley and sister Patsy (Gene) Davis. James was preceded in death by the love of his life Frances Rose and parents Rev. Alva Monroe and Dolly Mae (Cluck) Shockley; two brothers Jack and Bob, half-brother Junior and sister Doris Evans.

Services have been entrusted to Pate Funeral Home, 301 S. Main St., Benton, IL.

A memorial service will be held 11:00 a.m., on Saturday, May 14, 2022, at Pate Funeral Home with burial to follow at Masonic and Oddfellows Cemetery, Benton, IL., with military rites performed by the Benton American Legion Post 280, VFW Post 2671 and the National Honor Guard.

David Hutson, 67, of Sesser, Illinois, passed away on Saturday, May 7, 2022.

He was born on April 7, 1955, to Logan Hutson and Ramona Grammar Hutson (subsequently Tasky), in Troy, Michigan. David graduated from Sesser-Valier High School and served his country in the Navy and the Army before returning to Sesser. He was predeceased by his father and mother; by his stepmother, Betty Jo Hutson; by his former wife Betty Mae Leigh Hutson; and by his son, Michael Thomas Hutson.

He is survived by six children – David Logan Hutson, Jessica Elizabeth Marie Bowers, Kimberly Leigh Hutson, Selena Mae Meyer, Heather Dawn Crossland, and Jenny Lynn Hops, all residing in South Carolina – and by 14 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother, Charles Lee “Chuck” Hutson; sister, Cheryl Jan Hartsell (Bruce); stepsister, Pam Kreyer; stepbrother Michael Ahfeld; and by many aunts, uncles, nephews, nieces, and cousins.

A graveside service will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, May 16, in Hammond Cemetery, assisted by Brayfield-Gilbert Funeral Home and VFW Cox Post 4753.

She was born in Centralia, IL on August 18, 1989.

Britney married John Giacone on September 26, 2014.
Britney was an Office Nurse working at Heartland Women’s Health Care and was an OB Surgical Tech at Good Samaritan Hospital in Mt. Vernon.

Britney loved being a Military wife, she supported and adored her husband John. Britney had the greatest love for her children and her family. Being a wife and a mother was her number one priority. Britney lived for working with mother’s and babies, she was passionate about her job in OB and helping pregnant women. Britney loved being pregnant and carrying her own babies enough that she wanted to help other women who couldn’t have babies and be a surrogate mother. Britney was greatly loved by all who knew her and will be deeply missed. She was the best wife, mother, daughter and sister that anyone could ask for.

Carl Woodrow Mitchell, loving son, husband, father, Pap, brother and friend to a multitude passed peacefully April 30, 2022 in his home. Survived by his daughters Marilyn (Doug) Mitchell-Heusner, Carol Ney, grandchildren Heather (Justin), Rachel, Kristen, Hunter, Aaron and his trio of great-grandsons Hudson, Hollis and Hayden.

Born October 25, 1938, the only child of Dorothy and Woodrow Mitchell of Christopher, Illinois. He learned early the value of family, education and the benefits of a strong work ethic. Carl would recall delivering papers as a child, delivering coal to neighbors, attending church, helping at the 5&10 where his mother worked while his dad was serving overseas during WWII. He later obtained the honor of a full-ride scholarship to the University of Illinois (degree of his choice). Instead – he chose to attend Southern Illinois University which was the first best decision for his future! While there he rekindled his relationship with his greatest love, Brenda (Hughes) and married her 10 months later. The two immediately took off to the University of Florida as their “honeymoon” where Carl pursued a PhD in Quantum Mechanics. Carl and Brenda enjoyed traveling, volunteering, and loving their children and grandchildren for 53 years until Brenda rose to Heaven in 2013.

A worldwide renowned tribologist (his words: “I was a chemist by degree but tribologist by necessity”) traveled the world solving problems for 50 years – working in steel and aluminum mills in five continents, with favorite countries being Japan, Taiwan, Venezuela, Australia, and Brazil. Carl was sought out as an industry leader and respected name in the trade even after retirement, having been recruited by a start-up company just 3 months before his passing to consult. Carl will always be remembered as a man of countless experiences, stories, and for loving his family and friends fiercely. He will be incredibly missed by many.

Visitation to be held 10-11 a.m. May 5, 2022 at Clinton United Methodist Church followed by funeral service and lunch. Visitation 1-2 p.m. on May 6th at Gilbert Funeral Home in Christopher, IL followed by graveside service at Mt. Etna Cemetery in Thompsonville, IL. Jerry (Gerald S.) Greenwood, of Ironton, Ohio, went to be with the Lord on May 1, 2022.

He was born June 17, 1939, to Clyde and Lena Marie (Clayton) Greenwood, in Wayne, Michigan, the youngest of four children. He was preceded in death by siblings James Greenwood and Patricia Dobbs and is survived by Donald (Karen) Greenwood.

He graduated from Southern Illinois University in 1960 with a B.S. in Forestry and from Ohio University with a Masters of Public Administration in 1990. He worked for the US Forest Service for 33 years and then became a timber consultant for another 10 years. His plans at an early age included becoming a hermit in the wild north, but these were blown to pieces when he saw a young girl walk across the campus. He married that girl, Phyllis Ann (Beaty) Greenwood, his partner in all things – from fishing to raising four children – for 62 years. He was active in his church, an ordained deacon and a Gideon. He is survived by his children, Cheryl (Bill) Ferguson of Cincinnati, OH; Daniel (Lisa) Greenwood of St. Louis, MO; Kyle (Karen) Greenwood of Denver, CO; and Sarah (Bill) Thompson of Cincinnati, OH. In addition, he is survived by nine grandchildren and two great grandchildren, all of whom gave him great joy.

Odin Hensley, passed away on April 28, 2022.

He was born on September 17, 2020 in Mt Vernon, IL to Dakota Hensley and Serena (Abbott) Hensley.

He is survived by his mother Serena (Anthony) Corey of Zeigler; father Dakota (Porscha Brown) Hensley of Bluford; one brother Jiraiya Hensley and one brother on the way Easton Corey; grandparents Bonnie Clark McNeal of Christopher, James Abbott of Logan, Chris Davis of Bluford and Jill Davis of Bluford; great grandparents Robert and Bonnie Mace of Sesser, James Abbott Sr. of Logan, Laura and Victor Merfeld of Leiland, IL and Kelly Coleman of Valier; aunts RyAnn Clark, Railan Clark, Vivian Carlton, Adalyn Heiman and Mara Hensley and great aunts and uncles and several cousins.

Odin was a happy baby and loved Spiderman, he also loved music and liked to dance, he loved to swing and to throw basketballs and he liked to eat snacks.

Stanley Wilbur Brown, age 67, of West Frankfort, passed away Friday, April 29, 2022, at his home.

Visitation will be Wednesday, May 4, 2022, from 12:00 noon to 2:00 p.m. at the Leffler Funeral Home of Benton. Graveside services will follow at the Masonic & Odd Fellows Cemetery of Benton.

Stan was born April 5, 1955, in Aurora, Illinois; the son of Nathan Brown and Ruth (Rezetka) Brown. He married the former Tina Shipp on June 12, 1982; and she preceded him in death on June 1, 2016.

He was a retired City of West Frankfort Street Department Employee.

Stan was a member of Crab Orchard Lake.

He enjoyed fishing, duck and deer hunting, WWE Wresting, and most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family.

Flora Allis Bellamey, 82, of Christopher, passed away on April 29, 2022. She was born on April 2, 1940 in Springerton, IL to Daniel and Thelma Grace (Wilson) Simpson. She was married to James Ray Bellamey on December 18, 1971 and he preceded her in death on March 13, 2020.
