CHRISTOPHER — Dennis Tomei paces through his Christopher garage. Cold air from the holes in his roof stings his face as he looks out the bay-door windows, waiting for work to pull in. This is how his winters are spent. Tomei has been involved in the automotive industry nearly all of his life. His father built the garage where he now operates his business, Crown Rebuilders. It is a family business started by Tomei’s father, Herman Tomei, who built the garage in 1946 when he returned from WWII. He opened it in 1949 as a Chrysler dealership, later shifting to a full automotive shop. Tomei, now 61, was hired to work with him. Law enforcement agencies put out APB

Franklin County Sheriff’s office has reported there is an erratic driver on Route 14 at the Franklin-Hamilton county line.  They sent out an APB to the State Police and all local authorities.

He is a jolly fat man in a sleigh with eight tiny reindeer.  He is weaving rooftop to rooftop and going down chimneys with homes that have them.  He is carrying a bag that is suspected to be full of toys for children.

Direction of travel is unknown.  He is suspected to either head to Ewing and Whittington, maybe head to Benton, or go down North Thompsonville road and hit Akin and T’ville next.

It is guaranteed that he will hit all houses in West Frankfort, Logan, Zeigler, Freeman Spur, Orient, Pulmfield, Royalton, Cleburne, Mulkeytown, Christopher, Coello, Valier, Sesser, Buckner, West City and all rural areas in between.

He prefers milk and cookies at every stop.  He will visit every house in the county.

Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night.

When it was dark in most gyms last Saturday, because of threatening weather, there was a packed house in the Zeigler-Royalton Elementary/Junior High School cafeteria.  Both Tornado girls and boys basketball teams fed Christmas dinner to several senior citizens across the community.

The Z-R community has a storied history of coming together.  One was several years back for Tyson Kretz helping when he was in junior high with his battle with illness.  Kretz is a senior on the basketball team.

Over the last several years, Zeigler-Royalton athletics has been involved with Coaches-vs-Cancer.  These efforts has been spearheaded by Tornado Super-fan Randall Risley.  There have been several national awards given to Z-R for their efforts.

z-r-seniors-dinner-2I heard about this event around Thanksgiving.  Someone posted about it on my Facebook blog covering high school sports in the county.  There were flyers circulating around the Christopher Thanksgiving Tournament about the event as well.  Myself, along with others were blown away by the idea of service of these young people.

Matt Morgan, the head boys high school basketball coach, and Jeremy May the girls coach were the ones who guided their players in getting the event together.  Here is what Coach Morgan had to say about the day:

“It was a great opportunity for our kids to give back to the community. One of the most important things we try to teach our athletes at Z-R at all levels is that they can contribute to

something bigger than basketball or any sport that they can play. It is a very important message to get across and I feel like our school does a good job of it.

Granted, it makes it a lot easier when the families are on-board with developing that same culture. We are fortunate that our families at Z-R support us 110% in what we try to do. Seeing the smiles on the senior citizens faces on Saturday meant a lot to all of us that were there. Our entire community is so good about pitching in and helping support causes like this.  I’m blessed and very fortunate to be able to work and live in a community like the one that I do!”

Going into the Sesser-Valier Holiday tournament the boys team is 1-4 on the season.  They have a tough task waiting for them on the 26th as they face Wooldawn, who finished fourth in the state in Class 1A last year.  The girls team has not won a game this season.

senior-dinner-3Very few kids will come out of Franklin County playing college athletics.  The most important things is the lessons learned on the hardwood, diamond, or gridiron can translate into being better citizens, employees, and most importantly better mothers and fathers.  The biggest W of the year by any of the Franklin county teams took place in a tiled-floor multi purpose room this day.

Something else that took place a long similar lines that is noteworthy. The Home Economics department of Christopher High School had a similar event for the senior citizens of their community on Friday.

I am around teenagers a lot in various circles of my life.  This generation is a better bunch of kids than mine was in the 80’s, as a whole.  They are selfless, and have much more compassion than we did.  A great example is what took place last Saturday at Z-R.

Hometown Store and USA Mattress Monday. According to Mt. Vernon Fire Department Assistant Chief Kevin Sargent, the alarm company for the store contacted police that a fire alarm had gone off. When law enforcement went to check it out, they saw heavy smoke and contact the fire department. The store, located at 4700 Broadway, is a total loss, as are the inventory and contents which were inside. The amount of loss prompted MVFD to contact the Illinois State Fire Marshall to

investigate. “Due to the large dollar loss — we’re estimating at over $1 million — we call the Fire Marshall,” Sargent said. “The owners were on scene during the fire, and they have contacted their insurance company. … Right now, we are not treating it as anything suspicious, but because of the large dollar loss, we owe it to the owners to try to determine the cause of the fire. ” Please click to read the rest of the story from Tessa Glass of the Mt. Power is restored-My apologies

First of all, I am glad all of you in Benton are safe and warm.  At 10:10 pm, Ameren’s website did not show an outage in the 62812 aamerenrea code.

I am very green at this.  I learned something tonight.  When something happens, talk to an official and do not rely on a website.  When I saw the inflated number, my heart went out to all of you on a cold night.

I jumped the gun, and I am sorry.

It was an isolated incident on the northeast corner of town and around the Lake Moses/Country Club area.

In any situation like this, I will do my best to provide up to the minute information, if at all possible.  Tonight, the up to the minute was overkill.  It is a mistake that I learned from.

Road conditions deteriorating across the county

franklin-county-emaThe Franklin County Emergency Management Agency issued the following statement: Road conditions will continue to deteriorate through late tonight. Motor vehicle accidents have been reported. Travel only when necessary.

Mt. Zion Church performing “A Savior is Born”

The Mt. Zion Free Will Baptist Church will be performing the play. “A Savior is Born” tonight at their annual Christmas play and program mt-zion-signat 6:30 P.M.

From attending previous programs in the past, it is your old school, traditional, Christmas program that country churches frequently had in years gone by.

There will be soup, supper, snacks and most of all a time of fellowship after the service.

The church is located on South Thompsonville Road, 2 1/2 miles south of Thompsonville.  Everyone is encouraged to attend.

Winter weather update

Tomorrow is traditionally the second biggest shopping day of the year.  If you are planning on going to the St. Louis metropolitan area shopping tomorrow, it might be wise to alter your plans.

Interstate 64 from Washington county on is a stand still.  KMOV Channel 4 in St. Louis just ran a report from emergency icy-conditonsmanagement officials to stay off the roads until Monday.

Several have been posting on social media that the Mt. Vernon area has been experiencing freezing drizzle.  The farther north you go on 57 the worse it gets.  I know that several people from Franklin County go to the outlet malls in Effingham and Tuscola to shop.  Plans might be reconsidered as well there too.

Franklincounty-news. com will be updating frequently with changing weather conditions, closings, and altering of times.  Stay warm and safe this weekend.

Weather causing havoc with two HS basketball games tonight

According to a social media post by the voice of the Herrin Tigers Mike Murphy,  Herrin at Murphysboro and Marion at Cahokia has been rescheduled for a later date.

The St Louis Post Dispatch has reported that slick roads has caused several accidents during rush hour in the St. Louis metro area.

If you are doing some Christmas shopping, especially at Carbondale, prepare for slick parking lots.

There will always be an updated list of cancellations and school closings on this page.  Please call me at 937-0253 or call or text at 513-1274.  I anticipate some churches calling off Sunday Services.

With the low temperatures, I would not be surprised of some school closings for Monday.  With the cold temperatures, IDOT will have a battle treating roads.

Franklincounty-news.com will keep you abreast of the potential ice coming in for tomorrow.  As of now there is a tenth of an inch of freezing rain forecast on to of a half inch of ice and snow.

Radar at 6:15 pm

NOTE:  Radar can not always pick up light frozen drizzle.  I do not know the direction of travel and whether the temperature will get above freezing before this gets to Franklin county.
