Local fire departments were busy Sunday evening

by Steve Dunford

Several area fire departments responded to a house fire last night at the corner of Horrell Ave. and St Louis St. in West Frankfort. (Zeigler Fire Department photo)

In a six hour stretch between 6:00 pm and around midnight, area fire departments were busy handling several calls.

Just right at 6:00 p.m. West Frankfort Firefighters were paged to the intersection of St. Louis Street and Horrell Avenue (Deering Road)  to a structure fire.  Departments from West City, Benton, Zeigler, Johnston City and Abbott EMS provided mutual aid.

Between 8:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. Royalton firefighters were toned to a pole barn fire on Washington Street.  Zeigler firefighters were leaving West Frankfort when the were called for mutual aid.  The structure was a total loss.  Christopher provided station coverage for Zeigler.

At 10:55 p.m., Benton firefighters were called to a single vehicle accident  and fire on East Main Street in front of the new Dollar General with injuries.

At 11;45 p.m.. West City firefighters were called to a three vehicle accident with injuries at the intersection of Route 14 and Central Street (in front of Walmart.)

I might be mistaken, but I am nearly positive that  Benton and West City provided mutual aid for each other during the wrecks.  Buckner Fire and Rescue also provided station coverage for West City.

Major water line break in the City of Benton

by Steve Dunford

There has been a major water line break in the city of Benton, along West Church Street.  Pictures on social media show that part of the street is flooded.  It has been reported that residents in the area of the break are without water, and the Benton Street Department has issued a boil water order until further notice in the area of the break.

At this time the street is closed.  I will pass along further updates as I get them.

Here is a 6:45 p.m. update from KFVS-TV

UPDATE: A boil water order is now in effect for all water customers from DuQuoin Street to South Main and from Washington Street to Hudelson. This order will likely be necessary until Tuesday. As a precaution, the order also remains in effect for anyone who has experienced a reduction in their water pressure. Water department crews are currently on scene and drivers should be aware that the intersection of Church and Pope is currently closed. We’ll keep updates coming on the repair progress of the water line and a lift of the order.

WEST CITY, IL – (William McPherson, Benton Gazette.  Please click on the link for the full story.)

West City Attorney Ronald Giacone reports that the Village’s proposed Water Tower Project received a favorable ruling recently in Washington D.C. but that there’s still work to be done before the issue is resolved.

The project had been brought to a halt due to a study which found the building permit to be in violation of FAA policy due to its’ proximity to the Benton Municipal Airport. One issue of contention for the Village Board, and for Benton Airport Board members has been the reported number of flights, said to be 22 per day, which allegedly take place at the Benton Airport.
