TERRE HAUTE, IN— Thik Bol had a career-high 19 points and Southern Illinois completed a season sweep of Indiana State with a 74-68 comeback win on Sunday.

With the victory, the Salukis (15-14, 8-8) snapped a three-game losing streak and remained in fourth place in the Missouri Valley Conference standings with two games to go. Mathematically, they also removed the possibility of playing in the Thursday night play-in game at the conference tournament.

Bol was a force on both ends of the floor. He converted 8-of-10 shots from the field on offense, while matching his career best with six blocked shots.

“That’s the best I’ve seen Thik Bol play,” said SIU head coach Barry Hinson. “It’s not the six blocked shots — it’s how many shots he altered. He got two traveling violations down there because guys were scared to put the ball up. He had relatives in the house and I wish they could come to every game.”

The 6-foot-8, 200-pound junior scored SIU’s first three baskets of the game and was the main beneficiary of Indiana State’s double-teaming of forward Sean O’Brien. After giving up 28 points to O’Brien in the first meeting between the teams, ISU was determined to limit his touches. They did — he scored 11 points — but he had a team-high six assists, and four of those went to Bol, whose defender left him to help in the double team.

“If you’re going to double (O’Brien), he’s going to make the right pass,” Indiana State head coach Greg Lansing said. “If he’s got his man by himself, he’s going to beat him or create a shot for somebody else. Then you have to keep him off the glass.”

The Sycamores (10-18, 4-12) led by as many as seven points in the game and by five points after a Brenton Scott 3-pointer with 15:32 to go. SIU countered with a 6-0 run to regain the lead. The teams traded blows with Laquarius Paige draining a couple of 3-balls and Mike Rodriguez and Sean Lloyd countering with treys for Southern.

Lloyd’s triple with 7:38 remaining put Southern up, 56-55, and it never trailed thereafter. Bol’s layup with 4:21 to stretched the lead to 65-58 with 4:21 left, but Indiana State countered with a 10-5 run, capped by a Matt Van Scyoc 3-pointer to cut the deficit to 70-68 with 30 seconds remaining. Jonathan Wiley and Rodriguez iced the victory with four free throws, and Indiana State missed a layup and had an over-and-back violation to end the game.

“Rodriguez doesn’t get enough credit,” Lansing said. “He beat us down there (in Carbondale) with a couple of late threes. This time he got to the basket a little on us.”

The game was an entertaining rematch of an overtime contest that Southern won in Carbondale on Jan. 4. SIU broke out of its offensive funk by shooting 48 percent from the field. They also out-rebounded ISU, 39-30. Indiana State had 17 assists and made 10 treys, but they shot just 57 percent from the line and 37 percent from the field in the second half.

“Any time I play a team coached by Greg Lansing, I’m really concerned,” Hinson said. “It’s just another Lansing-Hinson battle, which has come to be almost like watching Friday the 13th. It’s not really fun until the ending comes up and they show who the director was.”

GOP. As president, he cut a grandiose figure. He was a braggart and a frequent liar. He was suspicious of other countries, frequently saying, “Foreigners are not like the folks I am used to.” He had a reckless disregard for limits. He belittled and browbeat others to intimidate them and give him what he wanted. Historian Robert Dallek said that he “viewed criticism of his policies as personal attacks” and opponents of his policies “as disloyal to him and the country.” He would bully and insult reporters, saying of one that he “always knew when he was around, because he could smell him.” He told whoppers about voter fraud in his elections. But he did get things done, dominating the political scene for good and for ill.

Have a need for speed? Proposed Illinois law may grant you that wish

Here is an excerpt) Those who would like to drive a little faster on Illinois interstates and highways soon may get their wish. State Sen. Jim Oberweis (R-North Aurora) introduced a bill earlier this month that would push the speed limit to 75 mph on many of the state’s interstates as well as make 60 the maxium speed limit on rural highways. Oberweis was one of the driving factors behind a bill that helped Illinois become the 37th state to push its speed limit to 70 when that law took effect on Jan. 1, 2014. Now, he’s looking to bump that maximum speed up a bit.

OROVILLE, CA – (Andre Byik -Oroville Mercury-Register Please click on this link to read the following stories and to keep updated on this story from Oroville’s local newspaper. Here is an excerpt.)  The surface water elevation at Lake Oroville continued to drop Sunday morning, nearing a goal of 850 feet previously set by the California Department of Water Resources despite a bout of wet weather that has flooded highways and roads throughout the north state. As of 1 p.m. Sunday, the elevation of the reservoir was 852 feet, which was down about 49 feet when water began flowing over the emergency spillway at Oroville Dam Feb. 11. Water releases down the damaged main spillway were measured at 55,000 cubic-feet per second, with inflow into the lake measured at 28,000 cfs. Officials expected outflows to outpace inflows Sunday, and the reduction in flows down the main spillway has allowed crews to view debris buildup and dredge debris piles below the chute.

WEST FRANKFORT, IL – Click on the link to read the full article. Here is an excerpt) His defender having stumbled, West Frankfort’s Noah Allen finally had space and started a drive to the lane. But before Allen could think about a shot, a Pinckneyville man quickly cut him off and forced him to pass. A few more ineffective passes later, the Panthers had forced a turnover and turned it into points. It was that kind of mindset that coach Bob Waggoner sought in the regular season finale, and it was that kind of mindset that rendered their non-conference visit to West Frankfort a rout before halftime.

Durbin Statement On Reports Of National Guard Deportation Force

Press Release from Illinois U.S. Senator Dick Durbin (D) Springfield

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senate Democratic Whip Dick Durbin (D-IL), Ranking Member of the Senate Immigration Subcommittee, released the following statement after a leaked pre-decisional memo outlining a Trump Administration plan to mobilize 100,000 National Guard troops to arrest and detain unauthorized immigrants. The reports are being denied by the White House and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

From Senator Durbin's website

From Senator Durbin’s website

“The reported Trump Administration plan to mobilize as many as 100,000 National Guard troops to arrest and detain unauthorized immigrants would be a frightening exercise of police state tactics.

“Trump executive orders have re-defined criminal activity so as to make undocumented immigrants with traffic offenses priorities for deportation. The same order calls for increasing the number of ICE agents to enforce the order from 5,000 to 15,000.

“Now, this plan which would add 100,000 Guardsmen to the effort shows the extreme measures the Trump Administration would take to break up families and deport people who have lived in this country peaceably for decades.

“We cannot rein in the hateful anti-immigrant agenda of the Administration unless the American people stand in solidarity against it.

“This is not a bizarre tweet. This is a brazen, heavy-handed assault on innocent people.”

Z-R coach Matt Morgan weighs in on his seniors

Steve Dunford – franklincounty-news.com

This is the second in a series that I just let coaches talk about their seniors.  I got this idea after talking to Thompsonville coach Pete Gordon about his seniors.

Z-R cheerleaders with Coach Morgan's daughter Briley

Z-R cheerleaders with Coach Morgan’s daughter Briley

Some of these young men were my son Andrew’s teammates in football playing for C-Z-R.  He talked to me several times about their work ethic.

The Tornadoes play harder than any team in Southern Illinois.  As of late they are playing well, staying in the ball game with two of the top Class 1A teams in Southern Illinois, Christopher and Goreville.

Here is coach Matt Morgan’s comments about his seniors:

Jakob Baxter: Jakob is a kid that has not gotten a lot of playing time over the course of this season, but he has never complained one time and is the leader in the bench. He is always on his teammates about cheering and has such a positive attitude. He’s a work horse that plays extremely hard every minute he has. I’m gonna really miss having him around.

Steven Anderson: Steven has been our Point Guard for 3 years now and the growth and maturity that he has shown on and off the floor is amazing to see. I am so proud of his development and the type of person he is. He’s got a bright future.

“This is a young man that dedicates his life to sports and I have no doubt that he will continue playing athletics beyond this school year! When you have a competitive drive like Steve does, big things are possible!”

Nolan Domineck: Nolan is a team first kid that has been willing to do anything I’ve asked over the past 4 years. His dedication to our program and willingness to do what is best for the team cannot be put into words.

He leaves an impact on the program moving forward that will stay with our younger players for years to come. He improved his game each year and showed the underclassmen what it takes to “Establish a Culture”

Cam Newton: Cams game has progressed so much over the past four years. His knowledge of the game is probably the best of anyone I have ever coached. Having him is like having another coach on the floor and he is someone that you know you can trust.

I don’t expect Cam to be away from the game of basketball long.  I fully expect him to be involved in coaching in the near future.

Austin Bolinger: AB is one of the best leaders I have ever coached! He is always willing to step up and encourage teammates if needed but also will chew someone’s butt if they need it.

His progression as a post player has been fun to watch. He has the heart of a champion and a relentless work ethic. He’s going to be successful in life because of that.

Brendan Whiting: Looking back and seeing the 5’4 110 pound freshman walk into our summer workout and knowing how he developed into the player that he has is absolutely amazing. I don’t know if I know of a kid that has put more effort and time into their game than Brendan has.

The kid is a gym rat that loves the game more than anyone can understand. I am excited to see what the future holds for him.  I fully expect him to continue his playing career. Seeing him grow and mature as a person has been even more special. He understands

that the sky is the limit for him and I expect him to take advantage of that.

All the seniors mean so much to me. The biggest impact that this group has left on me is the relationships that they built with my son Grayson.

My son looks up to and idolize each and everyone of them as positive influences and role models. For that, I am FOREVER grateful!

The offense of the Cross

by Ron Hale

Ron HaleThe Apostle Paul reveals that the cross of Jesus is foolishness to the Greek and a stumbling block to the Jew.

The cross has always been offensive. The sophisticated and philosophical Greek worldview is still around. Man and his “brain waves” are exalted. How could there be any salvation from an uneducated worker of wood from a backwoods place called Nazareth?

The Jewish mindset of the day longed for freedom and how could a crucified man be of any help? We want a warrior-Messiah to roast the Romans and let us do our thing.

The cross still sticks in the craw of the 21st century person. The cross says, “you must come to God on His terms – not yours.”

“See, I lay in Zion a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offense; and the one who believes in Him [Jesus] will never be put to shame” Romans 9:33 in the New Testament.
