Robert D. Wiseman – Benton, IL (formerly of Carrier Mills, IL)

Robert Dennis Wiseman, age 78, of Benton, a former resident of Carrier Mills, passed away at 1:15 p.m. Monday, August 22, 2022, at the Benton Rehabilitation and Health Care Center.

Robert was born on July 29, 1944, in St. Louis, Missouri; the son of Robert Leslie Wiseman and Marie (Gorham) Wiseman. He married the former Jean Evelyn Phillips on November 6, 1965, and she survives.

Mr. Wiseman was a retired District Service Manager for several auto companies. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran of the Vietnam War. And he was of the Catholic faith.

Bob enjoyed gardening, running, and being around animals, especially his show dogs.
Surviving is his loving wife of 56 years, Jean Evelyn Wiseman of Benton, IL; siblings: Terry Wiseman and wife Dorene of La Quinta, CA, Mike
Wiseman and life partner Barb, of St. Peters, MO, Karen Aulph and husband Donald of Melville, MO; and several nieces, nephews, and their families.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Mr. Wiseman’s wishes are to be cremated.

Inurnment services with military honors, will be held at a future date at the Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis, MO.

Brenda Lee Mitchell – Benton, IL

Brenda Lee Mitchell, age 67, of Benton, passed away Saturday, August 20, 2022, at her home.

Brenda was born on June 30, 1955, in Chicago Heights, IL, the daughter of Lindell Riley Gibbs and Ruth (Underwood) Gibbs.
She was a retired supervisor, having last worked at Triple E BBQ of West Frankfort. She was also a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles 2898 of Benton, IL.

Brenda enjoyed singing karaoke, playing BINGO, and playing the slot machines. Most of all she enjoyed her cats, spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.

Surviving are two children: Danny Maxwell and wife Jessica of Christopher, IL, Tiffany Chaffin and husband Harry of Benton; step-children: Dwayne Reed and wife Laura of Tennessee, Cathy Vega and husband Rick of Michigan; grandchildren: Danielle Melvin, Bryson Chullen, Hailey Motsinger, Breana Chaffin, Alexis Chaffin, Kyle Williams, Bethany Royston, Dylan Engelke, Isaiah Reed; two sisters: Ann Gibbs and Debbie Gibbs, both of Benton; her ex-husband and companion Randall Mitchell of Benton; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a son Billy Maxwell; a sister Bertha Presutti; and five brothers: Leroy Gibbs, Larry Gibbs, Richard Gibbs, John Gibbs, and Lawrence Gibbs.

Brenda’s wishes are to be cremated.

Scott Paul Osteen – Thompsonville, IL

Scott Paul Osteen, age 59, of Thompsonville, passed away Thursday, August 18, 2022, at his home.

Scott was born on February 3, 1963, in Benton, Illinois, the son of James Paul Osteen and Barbara Ann (Dasher) Osteen.

He was a former machinist, having last worked for Special Mine Services of West Frankfort.

Scott enjoyed hunting, fishing, and spending time with his grandchildren.

Surviving are two daughters: Kasey Nicole Woodrow and husband Josh of Akin, IL, Kaitlyn Elizabeth Hogue and husband Geoffrey of Washington D.C.; his parents: James Paul and Barbara Ann Osteen of West Frankfort, IL; three grandchildren: Nora Mae Osteen, Sawyer Owen Hogue, Clay Mitchell Hogue; two brothers: Brandon Lee Osteen and James Eric Osteen, both of Thompsonville, IL.
He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents: James Noble and Nora Frances Osteen; and his maternal grandparents: Arthur and Leona Dasher.

Mr. Osteen’s wishes are to be cremated with no public services.

Gary Joe Swisher-Marion, IL

Gary Joe Swisher, 68, of Marion, passed away on Thursday August 18, 2022 at VA Medical Center in Marion.
He was born on December 23, 1953 in Christopher to Harold and Ruth Marcella Young (Dietz) Swisher. He married Debbie Swisher and she preceded him in death.

He is survived by one son John David Swisher, one sister Bonnie Hanks of Benton, IL and one brother Robert Swisher of Mulkeytown, IL.

He was a Navy Veteran.

James Wendell Thomas – Benton, IL

James Wendell Thomas, 78, of Benton passed away on Thursday afternoon, August 18, 2022 at the VA Medical Ceneter in Marion.

He was born in Beattyville, Kentucky on April 10, 1944, the son of Stanley & Edna (Fraley) Thomas.

James married Sandra Kay (Holman) on October 26, 1968 and she preceded him in death on July 5, 2010.

Mr. Thomas was an Army Veteran. Mr. Thomas had a close walk with Christ and was faithful to the end. He loved praying for people & ministering to people one on one and was always willing to listen when someone needed a friend.

Marsha Lynn Jones-Sesser, IL

Marsha Lynn Jones, 70, of Sesser, passed away on Wednesday August 17, 2022 at Countryside Manor in Mt Vernon.

She was born on February 21, 1952 in Mt Vernon, Il to Phillip and Mary Belle (Breisacher) Bean. She married George Jones and he preceded her in death.

She is survived by her daughter-in-law Melissa Jones of Sesser; grandchildren Christopher Jones Jr. of Sesser, Hannah Jones of Sesser and Adreyanna Jones of Sesser; one sister Tana Bernard of Mt Vernon and one brother Phillip (Shelby) Bean of Dix.

Marsha and her husband loved to ride horses.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one son Christopher Jones, one brother Martin Bean, one sister Phyllis Bernard and one brother-in-law Larry Bernard.

Hazel M. Price – Benton, IL

Hazel M. Price, 103, passed away peacefully August 16, 2022 at her daughter’s home in Marion, IL.

She was born on August 26, 1918. She was the daughter of Lee and Lena Rea, Benton. She had lived at Heritage Woods in Benton for several years where she enjoyed the many friendships there and the kindness shown to her by everyone. She always loved participating in their bingo and playing checkers and cards until she was no longer able to play because of her eyesight.

Hazel was a woman of great faith and was always willing to express this to many others. She was a member of East Benton Baptist Church for many years and was presently a member of the Immanuel Baptist Church in Benton.

She was married to Troy Chance and had two daughters, Sandra and Mary Lou. He was tragically killed in a mine accident in Benton. Several years later she married Albert Price who succeeded her in death in 1989. Family was very important to Hazel and she enjoyed spending time with all her grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was born in Monticello, IL on September 17, 1964 the son of Jack & Sonia Ruth (Hammers) Fitzpatrick.

Mr. Fitzpatrick was a motorcycle & old car enthusiast. He enjoyed collecting knives & pocket watches. He was a jack-of-all trades.

Margot Juliana McAfoos – Benton, IL

Margot Juliana McAfoos was born January 12, 1924 in Berlin, Germany to Katarina (Vinogradoff) and Heinrich Weil. She was raised in Worms, Germany by her mother and grandparents. Margot was educated in language studies, primarily English and French. During World War II, she served her country by working as an interpreter at “listening posts.” After the war she worked for the US 7th Army Occupational Forces in Heidelberg, Germany as an interpreter.

In Heidelberg she met and fell in love with Captain John McAfoos. He returned home in 1947 to join his father FB McAfoos in business and later that year he asked Margot to marry him. Margot followed her heart and they were married in the First United Methodist Church of Benton in 1948. She has been an active member ever since.

Margot was a volunteer girl scout leader and chaired a fundraising effort for the American Cancer Society in Franklin County. She shared her culture and heritage by teaching Community Education classes for SIU. Margot organized and led Presley Tours of Europe for high school students for a number of years. Later she was recruited by The Shagbark Girl Scout Council to become a professional trainer. This led to a three year opportunity to work as a trainer for the North Atlantic Girl Scout Council in Nuremberg, Germany.

Throughout her life Margot enjoyed traveling the world. She loved learning and experiencing new cultures and ideas.

Family was always important to Margot. She is survived by her daughter, Katherine and Thomas Tosa of Muskegon MI. and her sons, John Frederick (Fred) and Ronda McAfoos of Thornton, CN. and Thomas and Robin McAfoos of Thompsonville, Il. Her grandchildren include Christopher and Kristine Tosa, of Ludington MI, Julianne and Christoph Hennefeld, of Walldorf, Germany, Michael Tosa of Busselton, Australia, Douglas and Rebecca Tosa of Marquette, MI, Allison McAfoos of Harrison, Ar. and Jessie and Alec Fedyniak of Sierra Madre, CA Margot also has three great-grandchildren, Katharina and Christina Hennefeld of Walldorf, Germany and John Riley Tosa of Bussleton, Australia.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband John M McAfoos.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Pate Funeral Home, 301 S. Main St., Benton, IL.

Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., on Friday, August 19, 2022 at Pate Funeral Home.

Graveside services will be held on Friday, August 19, 2022 at 1:15 p.m., at the Masonic & Oddfellows Cemetery, with Rev. Jesse Hinds officiating services.

A celebration of life for Margot will to follow in the fall of 2022.

Rebecca Lee Wilcox, 67, of Sesser, passed away on Friday August 12, 2022 at St Louis University Hospital.

She was born on June 29, 1955 in Alamogordo, NM to Robert and Mary (Middleton) Weir. She married Harry Wilcox on September 16, 1978.

She is survived by her husband Harry Wilcox of Sesser; her daughters Chandra McCubbins of Sesser and Lakeatha (Keith) Brown of Valier; Lucas McCubbins, Rowen McCubbins, Henry Brown and Thomas Brown; one brother Robert Weir of Benton and one sister Madeline Bailey of Centralia.
