Here is a traffic statement from the Illinois State Police at 12:20 p.m.

Things are easing up across the area concerning traffic as we approach totality. Traffic between approximately mile post 83 – Ina and mile post 71 – Benton is still heavy so motorists should use extreme caution in that area.

Because the eclipse has begun, we want to stress to the public, DO NOT STOP ON ANY PART OF THE ROADWAY TO VIEW THE ECLIPSE!! Choose a safe location away from traffic.

The following statement was issued by the Illinois State Police at 10:30 a.m.

TRAFFIC UPDATE – 08/20/17 10:30 A.M.

Traffic is starting to thicken on all of the south bound entrances into the area. Illinois Routes 37, 127, 148, U.S. 51, and Interstate 57 are experiencing high volumes of traffic.

We encourage motorists to completely focus on their driving and arrive safely!

By talking to local officials, state route 154 is starting to develop some heavy traffic between I-57 and State Route 148 in Sesser.

Most motorists are taking 148 down to Christopher and getting on State Route 14.  From there they are taking US-51 into Carbondale.  Traffic is getting to be very heavy in Sesser and Christopher.

In Zeigler, traffic is flowing on 148 without traffic control.

I will keep you informed of any updates.  Authorities before this event predicted the heaviest traffic here in Franklin County will be after the eclipse.  Please follow the webstie to keep informed.

Any information passed along from authorities or the public will be greatly appreciated.

What I am looking for in today’s eclipse

by Steve Dunford

My mom had a saying that drove me nuts as a kid,  if wishers were horses, beggars would ride.  This means people who sit around saying I wish, and never accomplish anything.

This is how I am going to handle the coverage today.  I will be going outside around 11:00 a.m. and look at the sky every 15 minutes or so.  If there is anything to report, I will post it.  Around 1:00 p.m. I am going across the road to the parking lot of Calvary Baptist Church.  I am going to watch the show.  Then, I will follow the same pattern until daylight is restored.

Yes, I started as a sportswriter.  However sharing the news to the people of Franklin and surrounding counties is very fulfilling.  I have never felt more in the will of God than I have right now in this stage of my life.

When I shared a little over a week ago, how communications were strange in 1979 during the partial eclipse, I would be leery if near the event that cell coverage would be weak.  In a perfect world, this is how I will spend the day.

I would love to be out on a lake or a farm.  If on a lake I would love to monitor how the fish would bite before and after the eclipse.  My curiosity would be if channel cats would be feeding right before it.   The perfect spot, would be one of the West Frankfort lakes.  It has been years, but I know in the past where fish bed and where catfish run.

I would love to be on a farm to watch how the livestock behaves, especially if the roosters crow after it is over.

Actually, I am more curious how nature behaves, than the eclipse itself.  Being a weather nerd, I am wondering how the temperature drops, and will the storms be more intense tomorrow.  I am not making a forecast, this is out of curiosity.

God is going to give us an awesome light show today.  Get out and enjoy it, if possible.

So far, local business did not get the expected eclipse bounce

by Steve Dunford

There were pleas from a few elected officials to get out and about this weekend.

The projections of hundreds of thousands of people were off base.  There have been tie ups of traffic in the Pacific Northwest in which is guaranteed no cloud cover.  I wonder if national and international tourists changed plans.

The search of eclipse glasses seem to be the big story here in Franklin County.  Last night, some were going for as high as $50 on some yard sale social media sites.

There is a chance of storms today that could hurt the amount to this area.  The Shawnee National forest had the most people in Southern Illinois, as the Garden of the God’s recreation area had to be closed with the weekend crowd.

The strip of Western Kentucky from Paducah to the Fort Campbell area experienced a lot of tourists, especially in the Land Between the Lakes area.

The Marion Republican reported an increase in traffic at Veteran’s Airport, formerly Williamson County Airport.  Scanner traffic was busy with planes landing yesterday morning.  They are using one runway dedicated to parking planes.

I will continue to monitor the situation, as people began to leave the area this afternoon, as traffic on northbound I-57, and State Routes 148 and 37 could be heavy.

Illinois is bucking a national trend by logging an increase in traffic fatalities.

According to the National Safety Council, preliminary estimates show road deaths in the state are up 4 percent in the first six months of the year, despite falling nationwide by about 1 percent.

Ken Kolosh, manager of statistics with the National Safety Council, says Illinois is seeing a large increase in what are called “vulnerable road user” deaths. The group includes pedestrians, bicyclists and motorcyclists.

As J.B. Wells and his Walker’s Bluff staff strolled through the early crowd of about 5,000 at Moonstock 2017 on Saturday, they noticed some guests wearing shirts not part of their authorized stock.

“We asked one of the people where he got the shirt,” said Wells, the chief operating officer at Walker’s Bluff in Carterville.

Then his crew found at least two “guests” selling unauthorized memorabilia. “One guy had a black duffel bag and was walking around selling,” he said. “Another guy was selling out of a black trash bag.”
