Three hobby classes at RLC set for October, November

by ReAnne Palmer, Rend Lake College Public Information

Learn some new skills this fall with three hobby classes through Rend Lake College’s Community and Corporate Education Division. In October, take on treasure hunting with a metal detecting course or try your hand at balloon art, and in November, freshen up your appearance with a makeup class.

First up in October is Metal Detecting and Treasure Hunting for Beginners. Participants will learn the basics about metal detecting from expert Charles Conaughty, including how to evaluate what type and quality detector is right for your needs. Conaughty will also cover rights and responsibilities for treasure seekers through his tales of traveling abroad.

The class costs $10 and meets from 6 – 8 p.m. Monday, Oct. 2 in the Learning Resource Center, Room 114, on the Ina campus.

Later in October, join recent RLC graduate Ryan Bushur to learn Balloon Twisting 101 to be the star at your next party. Participants of any skill level will learn how to properly twist professional balloon art, and will take away high-quality balloons and a pump.
The class costs $40, plus a $30 supply fee, and meets from 3 – 5 p.m. Tuesdays, Oct. 3, 10, 17, and 24 in the Historic Schoolhouse on the Ina campus.

In November, take the stage with RLC Theatre Professor Tracey Webb for Corrective / Contour Makeup to cover everything about basic makeup techniques. Webb will help participants highlight, shade, and blend features. A supply list will be mailed to each attendee at the time of registration.

The class costs $15 and meets from 6 – 9 p.m. Monday, Nov. 13 in the Learning Resource Center, Room 154, on the Ina campus. Participants should bring their own make up and be over the age of 13.

They all came…..today

by Steve Dunford

The intersection of South Main Street and State Route 34 in Thompsonville at 4:30 p.m. this afternoon (Kevin Smith photo)

After a weekend in which there was not much stirring here in Franklin County, I spent from about 9:30 a.m. until I ate supper around six passing on traffic reports.  The crowd that was anticipated on area roads over the weekend was in Franklin County today.

The traffic detail has been pulled at the Zeigler four way just in the last five minutes, from scanner traffic that I picked up from Franklin County Emergency Management.

North Thompsonville Road, South Thompsonville Road, Deering Road, Old Marion Road, and Freeman Spur Road also experienced major backups.

Traffic is still heavy on Interstate 57 and State Route 37 in Franklin County.  Regionally Routes 51, 127, 142, 45 and 1 has heavy traffic still.  It might be well into the night before they clear up.

Thank you all that passed information on to me throughout the day.  It makes my job so much easier in keeping the people of Franklin and surrounding counties informed.

I am calling it a day.  The two minutes of totality this afternoon was one of the most incredible sites that I have witnessed in my lifetime.  I took the last few minutes and scrolled through some incredible pictures that were shared.

Again thank you all for your assistance and being the eyes and ears for me this morning and afternoon.  I hope some of the same will choose to make Southern Illinois their viewing spot on April 8, 2024.

All State and Franklin County highways that travel north and south congested and clogged

by Steve Dunford

A steady stream of cars traveling from South Thompsonville Road (Main Street) to North Thompsonville Road (Akin Blacktop) in the village. Speculation is they are cutting to Interstate 64 at the Belle Rive-Bluford exit. (Thank you Natalie Dixon for allowing me to share.)

Over the last 30 minutes or so, every state or county highway (blacktop) in the county that runs north and south is congested and moving very slow.

I will continue to post as I will be treating this like a severe weather event.  Keep checking the Website’s Facebook page as I will continue to relay emergency information.  There might be at times, information is coming in too quick to post.

I will give updates until the traffic lessens in the county.

South Thompsonville Road becoming congested

by Steve Dunford

There is a steady stream of vehicles but no tie ups on South Thompsonville road, which travelers are coming from Williamson County on.

They could be taking two paths, either taking North Thompsonville road into Jefferson County to hit I-64 or coming into West Frankfort to hit Interstate 57.

This is a situation that could be ongoing for several hours.  I will keep providing continuous updates.

Mass exodus from Southern Illinois happening now

by Steve Dunford

Here is a statement issued by the Illinois State Police at 210 p.m.

TRAFFIC UPDATE – 08/21/17 at 2:10 P.M.
Northbound routes out of the area are starting to see heavy traffic. These include the I57 / I24 interchange and routes around the Goreville area, Illinois Route 3 near Chester is even seeing heavy traffic. Illinois Route 13 east bound from Carbondale to Marion has extremely heavy traffic. The attached pic is from Rt. 13 near John A. Logan College in Carterville.
Motorists are encouraged to completely focus on the task of driving, have patience, and if available seek alternate routes. Stay and enjoy the area for a while! Let traffic die down and then head home.

Locally in Franklin County Route 37 is getting heavy all the way into Benton.  Route 149 between Zeigler and Royalton is at a standstill, and some of the traffic is pouring onto State Route 148.

Please let the traffic clear until you navigate further.  It is safe to say that all state highways on the west side of the county will be clogged for awhile.  I will pass on any further updates as they warrant.

God’s awesome light show

by Steve Dunford

The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork. (Psalms 19:1, KJV)

Picture of totality in West Frankfort

WEST FRANKFORT, IL –  From 11:45 a.m. until 12:45 P.M I monitored the sun every few minutes.  It was incredible to see the sun disappear by increments.

For the first time in all of our lifetimes, we were able to experience a total eclipse.

Again, there will be one on April 8,2024 crossing Southern Illinois

At 1:00 p.m. I was honestly surprised how much daylight there was.  The wind was starting to pick up.

Over the next few minutes by 1:10 p.m. the temperature began to drop by ten degrees.  The crickets started to chirp, and there was a dusk feel.

In the next ten minutes it was pitch black.  I was able to take a quick shot in totality without missing the show.  There was more of a spherical look than I expected.  It was one of the most incredible things I have witnessed in my life.

Images like we witnessed today, scream the majesty and power of an almighty God.

Feel free to share your experiences in your own words.
