Bradley holds off Saluki Men’s Basketball, 68-62

By Tom Weber

PEORIA, Ill. — Bradley held off a late rally by Southern Illinois, closing the game on a 7-2 run in the final minute, to beat the Salukis, 68-62, on Tuesday night at Carver Arena.

The Salukis (10-8, 2-3) never led in the second half and trailed by as many as nine points, but four times they cut the deficit to one. Every time, however, the Braves (13-5, 3-2) answered with a basket at the other end.

Armon Fletcher going up for two of his twelve points in SIU’s loss to Bradley last night.

At 6:43, Tyler Smithpeters drained a 3-pointer for SIU to trim the deficit to 51-50. Bradley countered with a driving layup by Donte Thomas. On Southern’s next possession, Armon Fletcher‘s pull-up jumper cut it to 53-52, but Thomas again powered his way to the hoop for an easy bucket to extend Bradley’s lead to 55-52. An athletic power forward, the 6-foot-7 Thomas used his interior quickness to make 8-of-10 shots and finish with a game-high 22 points.

“We played (Thomas) at the five a lot more tonight, just because we thought we’d have the quickness advantage,” said Bradley coach Brian Wardle. “We thought they might put Fletcher on him, which is good for us, I thought. Our lone senior stepped up and made plays.”

The Braves were up by seven, 59-52, with less than four minutes to play, when the Salukis made one final push. Sean Lloyd rolled in a short jumper, was fouled and made the free throw to pull SIU within four, 59-55. After a shot clock violation by Bradley, Smithpeters connected on his third 3-pointer of the game to make it 59-58 with 2:56 left. He scored 13 points off the bench for SIU.

“Southern Illinois does a good job of putting four shooters out, spreading you, setting ball screens, and they have the big fella inside,” Wardle said. “We had late weak-side help a couple times, we over-helped a couple times, and they made us pay every time.”

Trailing, 59-58, the Salukis needed a defensive stop but couldn’t get it, as Jayden Hodgson drove the lane and made a floater with 2:27 to go. Known more for his perimeter shooting, Hodgson was only 1-of-6 from 3-point range, but finished with 11 points, two assists and four steals.

“I thought Jayden made some huge plays for us — passes, drives, that floater was a big-time shot,” Wardle said.

Southern closed the deficit to a single point one more time on a jumper by Kavion Pippen to make it 61-60 at the 1:04 mark. Thomas then hit the game’s biggest bucket, blowing past Pippen for a layup and foul. The three-point play pushed the lead to 64-60. Hodgson sealed the win with four free throws in the final 24 seconds.

“(Thomas) stepped up and made a huge play with confidence,” Wardle said. “That’s just a player making a play. I don’t think we played particularly well in the second half, luckily we were able to make enough plays and make our free throws.”

Both teams struggled to shoot from the perimeter — SIU was 5-of-18 and Bradley was 5-of-21. The game came down to which team was better able to execute inside the arc.

“When a game is tight, guys are thinking offense, and it’s got to be the other way,” said SIU head coach Barry Hinson. “Just get a stop and we’ll get a chance. You can’t trade baskets, and that’s what we did.”

In addition to Smithpeters, three players scored double figures for the Salukis. Lloyd led the way with 14 points to go with six rebounds and six assists. Pippen had 13 points, nine rebounds and three assists. Fletcher added a dozen points.

“This was so much better than the feeling I had when we went to Valpo,” Hinson said. “We were never in the game at Valpo.”

Bradley earned an early leg up in what promises to be a wild Missouri Valley Conference race, but there are still 13 more league games to go for both teams, and the Braves must still return to Carbondale.

“This is going to be the Missouri Valley this year,” Wardle said. “There’s going to be a lot of 2-3 possession games. Anyone can beat anyone on any given night. The big key is holding home court and now you gotta go on the road and try to steal some.”

Devils move to 5-0 in the BDC West, defeat Goreville 64-48

SESSER –  The Sesser-Valier Red Devils outscored their opponents 24-11 in the fourth quarter to take a nice 64-48 victory from the Goreville Blackcats.

Lady Devils move to 17-0 with BDC win over Trico

By Jim Muir

A 26-0 run in the second and third quarter broke open a relatively close game and propelled the Sesser-Valier-Waltonville Lady Devils to a 53-19 victory over Trico in Monday night Black Diamond Conference action.

The Lady Devils led 18-9 after the opening quarter but outscored Trico 22-6 in the middle two quarters and improved to 17-0 overall on the season.

“I thought our defense was really good tonight,” said longtime SVW Coach Rick Metcalf. “Any time you hold a team to only 19 points it’s a great team effort on defense.

Metcalf gave high marks to Paige Tucker who led the team offensively with 16 points and also to Adrianna Fedderke, who came off the bench to help the strong defensive effort. Metcalf also singled out Sami McCowen, who had 12 points, four blocked shots and a stellar defensive effort.

“Sami is just a special player,” Metcalf added.

Rounding out the scoring for SVW, Carlie Page scored eight points, Brooke Wilderman had seven points, Jaice McCowen had six points, Jada Hale added three points and Ella Zahm added one point.

The Lady Devils are back in action on Wednesday night when they host the always tough Goreville Lady Blackcats in a key BDC West match up. SVW will begin play on Saturday, January 13 at the West Frankfort Mid-Winter Classic and also play on Tuesday, January 16 and Thursday, January 16.

ABV Jack’s new ranklings: Devils, Bearcats ranked, Tigers, Redbirds honorable mention

Jack Bullock knows the pule on 1A and 2A Boys Basketball for Springfield south more than anyone.  There are a lot of polls floating around and I think they are a little off.

One thing that Jack mentioned is Jared Curry of Christopher will be back Friday night against Goreville.  The Bearcats have survived the storm since he has been injured.  Several have stepped up including Gage Hawkins in his absence.

Saluki Men’s Basketball plays at Bradley on Tuesday

By Tom Weber

CARBONDALE, IL — The Southern Illinois men’s basketball team returns to action Tuesday night when it plays at Bradley in a game televised live on ESPN3 at 7 p.m. Bradley holds a 47-45 edge in the all-time series. However, SIU has dominated the series since 2002 by a 24-12 margin, including an 8-8 mark at Carver Arena. The Salukis have won four of the last five meetings between the schools and the average margin of victory in the four wins was +16.0 points. Head coach Barry Hinson is 16-12 lifetime against the Braves, including 5-5 during his tenure at SIU.

Armon Fletcher coming off career night
Armon Fletcher (6-5, 207, Jr.)  had a career night at Valparaiso on Jan. 6 with 32 points and 14 rebounds. He became the first Saluki player to score 30+ points since Anthony Beane had 31 versus Drake on Feb. 13, 2016. The Salukis switched to a four-guard lineup on Dec. 13 versus Jackson State, moving Fletcher to the “hybrid-four” and inserting guard Aaron Cook into starting lineup in place of forward Jonathan Wiley. Since the change, Fletcher has averaged 15.8 points, 5.9 rebounds and shot 50 percent from the field.

Dawg Bites
•In his last five games, Armon Fletcher is 19-of-22 (.864) from the free throw line.
•SIU is shooting .349 from 3-point this year. If that holds up, it will be the team’s best percentage since the 2010 team converted .362.
•The Salukis are 22-14 during Tyler Smithpeters‘ career when he has made two or more 3-pointers in a game, including 5-2 this season.
•If Smithpeters reaches double figures in scoring at Bradley, it will mark the first time in his career he’s reached double figures in three-straight games.
Austin Weiher played a season-high eight minutes at Valparaiso.
Barry Hinson (258) needs four wins to pass Gregg Marshall (261) for fourth all-time among MVC coaches.
•The Salukis have been out-rebounded in five of their last six games and by an average of -5.3 in that span.
•SIU has gone 99-consecutive games with at least one 3-point field goal and 1,007-consecutive games with at least one free throw (dating back to 1986).

The magic number is 70
The Salukis are 10-0 when they hold an opponent under 70 points and 0-7 when an opponent scores 70 or more.

Sean Lloyd Jr. emerges as leader
Sean Lloyd Jr. (6-5, 210, Jr.) has emerged as the team leader. At 33.4 minutes per game, he averages five more minutes than any teammate. He typically guards the opponent’s top scorer. Lloyd is the nephew of two-time MVC player-of-the-year Lewis Lloyd, who played two seasons at Drake (1980-81) and seven years in the NBA. Another uncle, Daryl Lloyd, also played at Drake and led the team in scoring in 1985 with 17.9 points per game.

Kavion Pippen leads team in field goal percentage, blocked shots
Juco transfer C Kavion Pippen (6-10, 240, Jr.) leads the team in field goal percentage (.539) and blocked shots (29). Pippen has scored in double figures in all but five games this season. The nephew of NBA legend Scottie Pippen was named MVC Newcomer of the Week on Nov. 12 and again on Dec. 4. He had a career-high 24-point outing versus Jackson State.

Marcus Bartley for three
After missing the first six games of the season with a broken wrist, Saint Louis transfer G Marcus Bartley (6-5, 193, Jr.) has emerged as a 3-point shooting threat, converting 17-of-43 (.395). He made four treys to key SIU’s win at Northern Iowa. Bartley also has 38 assists and 22 turnovers.

Salukis among Top 100 in two defensive categories
The Salukis rank No. 81 in scoring defense (68.0) and No. 87 in 3-point field goal percentage defense (.325) among the nation’s 351 Division I teams.

Injury Report
Thik Bol (knee), Eric McGill (left hand) and Jonathan Wiley (knee) are out for the season. Here is a list of games missed by Saluki players this season due to injury…
Thik Bol    17 games
Marcus Bartley    7 games
Eric McGill    7 games
Jonathan Wiley    2 games

.Controlled Pheasant Seasons Extended at Wayne Fitzgerell State Park

SPRINGFIELD, IL – The Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) is extending controlled pheasant hunting seasons at three IDNR sites. Hunters can make reservations now for additional hunting opportunities.

The three sites with additional controlled pheasant hunting are Eldon Hazlet State Recreation Area in Clinton County, Jim Edgar Panther Creek State Fish and Wildlife Area in Cass County, and Wayne Fitzgerrell State Recreation Area in Franklin and Jefferson Counties. The controlled pheasant hunting season at each site has been extended through January 28.

Hunters are encouraged to use the online Controlled Pheasant Hunting Reservation System at www.dnr.illinois.gov to obtain permits for these additional hunt dates. Reserved permits ensure hunters will have the opportunity to hunt. Hunters using reserved permits also ensure that site staff on these sites can release two pheasants per hunter each day, which is the Department’s objective for pheasants released on each hunt date. Standby permits are also available at the sites, although standby hunting opportunities may be limited or unavailable if the hunter quota for a hunt date is filled by reserved permit hunters.

To access the reservation system:
1. Click on “Hunt/Trap” on the toolbar on the IDNR Home Page
2. Then click on “Upland Game”
3. Then click on “Controlled Pheasant Hunting Permits, Hunting Areas, Regs, etc.” under the “Licenses and permits” heading.

Hunters are reminded that the daily permit fee for controlled pheasant hunting is $30 for resident hunters and $35 for nonresident hunters. The daily permit fee applies to each hunter. Reserved Permits are paid for via credit card during the application process. Completing a permit reservation online can be accomplished as late as 24 hours before an available hunt date, and securing a permit takes less than five minutes. Standby hunters pay daily permit fees at the site hunter check station on the hunt date. Standby hunters need to be prepared to pay permit fees with cash.

Tyra Buss cementing legacy in IU women’s basketball program

Tyra Buss hit the national landscape in January 2010 by finishing second in a 12- and 13-year-old Punt, Pass and Kick competition at the site of the AFC championship in San Diego. Her legend and legacy has only continued to grow in stature through the years.

Featured in Sports Illustrated’s “Faces in the Crowd” in the magazine’s Feb. 28, 2011 edition, she drew the attention of people in her hometown back in 2003. From an early age, it was obvious that Buss was something special, perhaps rivaling Archie Dees as the best athlete to ever come out of Mount Carmel, Illinois.
