Devils drop two at Tip-Off Classic….girls win at Chester

DuQUOIN-  The Sesser-Valier Red Devils dropped two contests yesterday at the DuQuoin Tip-Off classic yesterday.  In a ball game they were in the thick of things till late, they fell to the Carmi-White County Bulldogs 56-44.  In the night cap, they fell to the host DuQuoin Indians 63-51.

Against Carmi, All Tornament Team selection Tyler Winchester led the Devils with 16 points.  In the evening session Charles Farmer led S-V with 12 points.  Lukas Gunter added 10, which  he was also on the All Tournament Team.

The Devils might be sitting with a 1-3 record, but they played with two very good class 2A teams, as well as one of the top 1A teams in Southern Illinois.  This weekend will go along way in helping them in late February.

Franklin County Basketball Preview – Saturday 12/3/16 part one

Steve Dunford- Franklin County Hoops and Gridiron

Sesser-Valier and Benton will both be playing two games today.  The Red-Devils play Carmi-White County at 12:30 this afternoon and DuQuoin at 7:30 tonight in the DuQuoin Tip-Off classic.  The Rangers will be playing Johnston City at 2:00 p.m. followed up by Goreville at 8:30 p.m. in the Goreville Invitational Tournament.  I will preview this afternoon’s games and will have another preview on the games tonight after the completion of the afternoon session of both tournaments.

When I make an “If I drove” statement, I do not want anyone to feel sorry for me.  For those that don’t know, I have not driven in three years because of Seizures.  I would be in Perry and Johnson Counties today.  I would be checking out the hospitality rooms at DuQuoin and Goreville.  There is not one that I have not liked yet.  Today I will be getting a look at Hardin County and Goreville on video.  I will watch the Rangers and the Blackcats tonight.  I will be listening to a lot of radio broadcasts.  I will sneak the Salukis in there on this cold cloudy December day.

Sesser Valier (1-1) vs Carmi-White County  (2-0) 12:30 P.M. at DuQuoin

It seems like Matt Rice has been in the backcourt and Jake Simon has been down low for the Bulldogs forever.  Jack Bullock (ABV Jack) of abaselineview.com has Carmi winning the East division on the BDC.

The Red Devils are coming off a tough 55-53 loss to a very quick and physical Cairo Pilot club last night.  Shane Garner can throw 10 different guys on the floor and not miss a beat.  Legs will be a factor for the Devils today.  The bulldogs had the night off.  I am going with Carmi-White County by 10 today.

I might be not a very popular guy in Pitchfork Nation but I will have them going 0-2 today.  Playing in the Tip-Off classic and the BIT might not pad the regular season record, but what really matters in late February when the record flips to 0-0.  Those are the games that really count.

What jumped out at me in the box score last night, it looks like the Pilot defense shut Charlie Farmer down.  Joshua Gunter and Addison Baxter led S-V with 18.  There are two more weapons that Coach Shane Garner will have at his disposal of his very deep ball club.

Benton (3-0) vs Johnston City (3-0) at Goreville

If someone would have come up to me last week that Johnston City would be 3-0 a week ago I would have wondered what local watering hole you walked out of.

The Indians has surprised a lot of High School basketball fans across Southern Illinois.  I knew going in that EJ Thompson was a player.   I have watched Luka Galdoni on the football field the last couple seasons, and knew he was a tremendous athlete.

Chase Selby,  Wyatt Rix, and Houston Hall can flat out shoot the ball.  You throw big Max Edwards in there in the inside.  Johnston City might be one of the better 2A teams in Southern Illinois this year.

Benton Coach Ron Winemiller is concerned about their strength and athleticism.   This will be the Rangers toughest test of the year.  There were several raving about the Ranger’s defense last night.  I am going with Benton by 15 this afternoon in a very hard fought ball game.  This might be a close one at halftime.

There will be an evening edition of previews at the completion of both games.

West Frankfort Lady Redbirds lose at home to Carterville

The FCHS Lady Redbirds basketball team lost at home Thursday against Carterville 62-47. The Lady Lions used a smothering defense as they held West Frankfort to a season low in points. Carterville rotated four different players throughout the game on the Lady Redbirds outstanding point guard Morgan Griffith, but they still couldn’t stop her from scoring 35 points including 20 of 25 from the free throw line. Pope County upsets Thompsonville on buzzer beater

Pope County upsets Thompsonville on buzzer beater

Steve Dunford –Franklin County Hoops and Gridiron

THOMPSONVILLE-  It was déjà vu all over again last night for the Thompsonville Tigers.  For a team that lost on two buzzer beaters last year, and four overtime losses, they were snake bitten again last night.  Pope County pulled the upset as Matt Davis hit a 35 footer past the volleyball line for the win.  The nice maroon clad contingency that made the long trip up from Golconda went home ecstatic.

After one it was Tyson Kessler 13 Pope County five.  The Tigers came out pressing and it was very effective. Two things changed in the second quarter.  Pirate big man, 6’ 8” center Jake Floyd came into the ball game.  I am unsure why he did not get the start.  Second Pope County Coach Jim Simmons puts a little variation in his 2-1-2 zone.  It had a little more variation to it and it looked like a box in one at times keying on Kessler.  Play was very ragged at the half with the Tigers up 22-15 at the intermission.

The third quarter was not one to say the least for the archive vaults.  Jake Floyd took control of the game on both ends of the floor.  He was dominant on the boards, which he ended up with a game high 15.  The Tigers were ice cold (13/41 32%) and did not attack the zone either.  After three the game was tied up at 26.

In the fourth Jared Payne hits three baseline threes and a lot of free throws were shot for both teams in the meantime to get things all knotted up at 40.  The Tigers the offensive rebound off a missed free throw and airs the ball out until the 1:05 mark when Payne goes to the line and hits two free throws and T’ville goes up 42-40.

The Pirates go down and hit a quick three to go up 43-42.  Payne hits two more free throws to put Thompsonville up 44-43.  Pope gets the ball down deep and the post and misses the shot.  Thompsonville gets the rebound and Corbin Fitch is fouled and goes to the line, hits 1-2 to give Thompsonville a two point lead.

Then the shot that took place that will be most likely on Martin’s moments.  You can watch the video on Franklin County-News’ Facebook page

The Tigers will host the NCOE Friday night at 6:00 p.m. in their homecoming game.  The Tigers defeated the Fighting Cardinals 78-75 last Wednesday night at the Christopher Turkey Tournament.  Pope County travels to Crab Orchard Friday night who were 98-83 winners over NCOE last night.

On a side note Carrier Mills coach Keil Peebles was their with his Wildcats last night scouting.  I heard they played extremely well last week at Vienna.

Selby helps Johnston City remain undefeated

GOREVILLE — Led by sophomore Chase Selby, Johnston City rallied from five points down late in the third quarter to knock off Anna-Jonesboro, 66-56, to remain undefeated along with Benton after Tuesday’s second day of the 5th Annual Goreville Invitational.  Story from The Southern.  THE BOX SCORE FROM LAST NIGHT’S BENTON GAME IS INCLUDED IN THIS LINK

Sean O’Brien tip-in lifts Saluki Men’s Basketball to overtime win over Murray State

By Tom Weber, SIUSalukis.com.

CARBONDALE, Ill. — In a heart-pounding overtime win, Sean O’Brien broke a tie when he tipped-in a missed shot by Mike Rodriguez with 0.8 seconds remaining, and Southern Illinois held on to beat Murray State, 89-85, on Tuesday night.

The Salukis (4-3) never trailed during the final 15 minutes of regulation or during the overtime period, but there were plenty of times when it seemed the momentum and lead was ready to swing in favor the Racers (3-4). It was in those key moments that SIU’s three seniors — O’Brien, Rodriguez and Leo Vincent — each stepped up and made critical plays.

For instance, Southern was clinging to a 67-66 lead late in regulation when Rodriguez stepped back and hit a deep 3-pointer to put his team up, 70-66. It was a gutsy play in a game where the Salukis were ice cold from outside the arc (6-of-24).

That bucket only momentarily stemmed the tide. Murray State’s Bryce Jones proceeded to bury two 3-pointers in the final eight seconds of regulation to send it to OT — the last one coming from the right corner with 0.3 seconds on the clock.

SIU regrouped in overtime. Vincent, who was only 1-of-6 from downtown during the first 40 minutes, stroked a 3-pointer right out of the gate in overtime. On the next possession, Rodriguez stole the ball from Damarcus Croaker, which led to an O’Brien layup and an 82-77 advantage.

The Racers weren’t done. Jonathan Stark scored seven of his game-high 29 points in the extra stanza, and his free throws tied it, 85-85, with 1:06 to go. After Armon Fletcher had his shot blocked by MSU’s Gee McGhee, Murray State had a chance to take the lead in the waning seconds.

With about a 10-second differential between the game and shot clock, Stark attacked the right side of the lane and launched a high-arching shot off the glass that didn’t fall.

“I like what we got, Jonathan made a great move and got to the basket, he just didn’t finish the play,” said Murray State coach Matt McMahon.

Fletcher rebounded Stark’s miss and forwarded the ball to Rodriguez. As the final seconds ticked away, Rodriguez made his move to the right baseline. His shot was off, but O’Brien gently tipped in the follow.

“I had to wait for a second to make sure (the ball) cleared the cylinder,” said O’Brien, who finished with 15 points and nine rebounds.

That was a heckuva offensive rebound, boys and girls,” added SIU head coach Barry Hinson. “That was pretty sweet.”

The seniors had carried the day.

Rodriguez had 21 points and five assists, and seemed to will his team to victory at the end.

“He’s very crafty using the ball screens, he can dance behind the screen, and if he’s hitting his 3-point shot, he’s a really difficult cover,” McMahon said. “That was a really big three he hit late — about a 25-footer.”

Although he was only 2-of-7 from 3-point range, Vincent had 17 points and made shots in crunch time.

“(Mike Rodriguez) wants the ball in his hands at crunch time. LeoVincent wants the ball in his hands at crunch time,” Hinson said. “Sean O’Brien — crunch time — made a big play. Our three seniors made big plays tonight.”

Southern’s gameplan was to pack the paint and force Murray State to shoot from the perimeter. It almost backfired, as the Racers made 9-of-16 from 3-point in the first half and 13-of-30 in the game. The Salukis countered with a 42-14 edge in points in the paint. Murray State was 14-of-40 from inside the arc and shot 39 percent from the field overall.

“We told our guys tonight, we’re not going to let them beat us in the paint,” Hinson said. “If they’re going to beat us, they’re going to have to beat us from the 3-point line.”

This was SIU’s first game of the season that came down to the wire. Southern’s previous six games were all decided by double figures one way or the other. Hinson hopes his team can draw from tonight’s experience.

“I know at least we have something to go back on,” he said. “We have some positive history.”
