SPRINGFIELD – A plan to end a two-year Illinois budget standoff negotiated in the Senate – which likely includes an income tax increase as well as items on Gov. Bruce Rauner’s agenda – could get a vote in Springfield as early as Monday, a leading Republican senator said Sunday. The deal was still shaping up over the weekend after weeks of talks between Democratic Senate President John Cullerton and GOP Leader Christine Radogno, said Sen. Pamela Althoff, a Republican from McHenry. Please click on the link to read the story from AP that ran in the Peoria Journal-Star

‘My Feelings Are Hurt’: Mariah Carey Says She Was ‘Foiled’ in New Year’s Eve Performance

mariah-careyI am an old coot before my time. I don’t get into pop culture. This story blew up on social media on New Years eve. This story does not go away so I am going to start following it…sd…. The 46-year-old pop star shared a nearly two-minute audio recording to her Twitter page Sunday morning in which she shared that she was “foiled” and “humiliated” by her Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve concert. “I haven’t really addressed the situation that happened on New Year’s Eve and in time, I will. But for now, I want everyone to know that I came to New Year’s Eve in New York in great spirit and was looking forward to a celebratory moment with the world,” Carey said. “It’s a shame that we were put into the hands of a production team with technical issues, who chose to capitalize on circumstances beyond our control.” The singer explained that dealing with conditions such as a crowd of thousands making noise and the cold temperatures made it “not practical” for a live performance. Carey said the situation was made worse by faulty ear pieces. Please click to read the story from People magazine.

Statehouse Insider: Lame duck session starts – all two days of it

state-capitolThe long-awaited lame duck session of the General Assembly begins Monday. It will last all of two days. It almost makes you long for those heady days last summer and fall when Gov. BRUCE RAUNER fairly regularly talked about all the great things lawmakers could accomplish once the election was behind them and they were free to take bold votes on controversial issues. Admittedly, big things can be done in the legislature in two days. Heck, big things can get done in a couple of hours when everyone is pulling in the same direction. Of course, that hasn’t happened for the better part of two years now, so why expect everything to suddenly change now? Please click on the link from the Springfield Journal Register.

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) — Republican lawmakers in Kentucky used their new majority in the state Legislature to pass bills targeting labor unions and abortion on Saturday over the shouts of hundreds of protesters that packed the cavernous Capitol. With chants of “we will remember in November” seeping through the closed doors of the state Senate, lawmakers gave final passage to a bill saying employers cannot force workers to pay dues to labor unions that represent them in collective bargaining. They also repealed a law guaranteeing higher wages for construction workers on publicly financed projects. And they voted to require a woman seeking an abortion to first undergo an ultrasound and listen to the fetal heartbeat. All the measures were sent to Republican Gov. Matt Bevin. ANALYSIS: Ramming terror method adopted by ISIS returns in Jerusalem attack

The last ramming terror attack was in an open market in Berlin on December 20.

The last ramming terror attack was in an open market in Berlin on December 20.

After a lull of several weeks, four soldiers were killed and 17 others wounded, when a truck rammed into a group on an educational trip to Jerusalem’s Armon Hanatziv promenade, a location with a stunning panorama of the capital. Since a wave of violence broke out in September 2015, Palestinian attackers have killed more than 40 Israelis and two Americans. At least 230 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli fire, the majority while carrying out attacks. The rest died in clashes with IDF soldiers. Palestinians have used cars, trucks, buses and even tractors to carry out attacks against Israelis in the past, but with trucks now routinely used by groups such as ISIS and al-Qaida for deadly terrorist attacks, this attack in Jerusalem becomes reminiscent of the deadly ISIS-inspired ones that hit Europe this year.
