Statehouse Insider: Let’s chant: Two more years, two more years

MadiganSo much for the grand plan to oust MICHAEL MADIGAN as House speaker. Not that many people thought it was going to happen anyway, but there was a relentless drumbeat by the state Republican Party to shame Democrats into rejecting Madigan for another term as speaker. Democrats had already met privately during the veto session and decided to continue supporting Madigan, so last week’s public vote during the House swearing-in ceremonies was anticlimactic. The only dissenter, such as it was, was Rep. SCOTT DRURY of Highwood, who voted “present.” Almost immediately, the state GOP was back at it, banging their anti-Madigan drum and sending out emails criticizing Democrats who voted for him. The truly depressing thing about this is that this will now go on for another two years. It means there is another election cycle where it will be all “Madigan bad” all of the time. Trump skeptics should take heart in his cabinet nominees

Throughout their long — and at times pointed — confirmation hearings, Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.), former ExxonMobil chief executive Rex Tillerson and retired Marine Corps Gen. James Mattis comported themselves in a graceful and respectful way. They showed themselves to be thoughtful, patient and deliberate, and they retained a sense of humor and composure even in the face of marginalized protesters, tough questioning and pushback from cranky senators. It was a reassuring sight, especially when compared with the news conference President-elect Donald Trump held this week, which was acrimonious and at times outright belligerent, especially by White House news-conference standards. So how do we reconcile Trump’s often peevish, aggressive nature with the cool, calm and collected demeanor of three of his most vital Cabinet nominees? This opinion piece by Ed Rogers of the New York posts summarizes the three top level cabinet picks after senate conformations this week. Please click to read.

Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus to End Its 146-Year Run

cicusRingling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey circus announced on Saturday night that after 146 years of performances, it was folding its big tent forever. In a statement on the company’s website, Kenneth Feld, the chief executive of Feld Entertainment, the producer of Ringling, said the circus would hold its final performances in May. He cited declining ticket sales, which dropped even more drastically after elephants were phased out from the shows last year. “This, coupled with high operating costs, made the circus an unsustainable business for the company,” the statement said. “The circus and its people have continually been a source of inspiration and joy to my family and me.” Stephen Payne, a spokesman for Feld Entertainment, said in an interview on Saturday night that the closing would affect about 400 cast and crew members. SESSER – Putting together a great second quarter on Saturday afternoon, the Sesser-Valier Red Devils erased whatever momentum that their opponents had after the first eight minutes. Visiting Zeigler-Royalton, behind an outside scoring offensive, took a 19-18 lead at the end of the first period of play. However that was the end of the Tornadoes’ highlights of this game as the hosts took complete control in the next eight minutes, outscoring Z-R 29-4 to roll to a comfortable 85-56 Black Diamond Conference win in a make up game from the previous night that was moved because of the weather. The storm that Z-R put together in the first quarter didn’t last long enough to bother the Red Devils as Coach Shane Garner saw his team improve to 7-8 on the season and 3-3 in the West Division. This government office is trying to shut down nasty and naughty names

In 1929, Chief Justice William Howard Taft persuaded Congress to finance construction of “a building of dignity and importance” for the Supreme Court. He could not have imagined what the court will ponder during oral arguments this Wednesday. The case concerns the name of an Asian American rock band: The Slants. And surely Taft never read a friend-of-the-court brief as amusing as one filed in this case. It is titled “Brief of the Cato Institute and a Basket of Deplorable People and Organizations.” The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office is empowered, by the “disparagement clause” of a 1946 law, to protect American sensitivities by denying trademark protection to “immoral, deceptive or scandalous” trademarks. These have included those that a substantial portion of a particular group perceives as disparaging that group — an ethnic, religious, national or other cohort. The office has canceled the trademark registrations of entities named Mormon Whiskey, Abort the Republicans, Democrats Shouldn’t Breed, Marriage Is For Fags, and many more. What If China’s Money Stream Stops Flowing to Hollywood?

holloywood reporter cartoonBeijing begins monitoring “irrational” investments in entertainment companies (even while Alibaba pledges $7.2 billion) as one deal falls apart and all eyes focus on Trump. Chinese companies poured record amounts of capital into Hollywood in 2016 — a trend eagerly embraced by the U.S. film industry. Among the deals: Dalian Wanda Group acquired Legendary Entertainment for $3.5 billion and Dick Clark Productions for $1 billion; Alibaba made a major investment in Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment; and Beijing-based Perfect World Pictures put $500 million into 50 films from Universal. But tighter regulatory scrutiny and rising protectionism in the U.S. and China now have the industry questioning whether the deal flow could dry up in 2017. Already, there have been casualties. Boys high school basketball preview for 1/14/17

Steve Dunford

When you start flipping over the schedule,  familiarity starts to set in.  Both Games on today’s docket has been rescheduled from last night.

ZEIGLER-ROYALTON (1-9)(0-4) at SESSER-VALIER  (2-3)(6-9)  2:30 p.m. start

z-r-logo-2Both teams know each other well.  If Whiting gets hot and the Devils are cold, Z-R could hang around.

With the addition of Austin Bollinger on the inside, the Tornadoes have a way to neutralize Jamie Lance in the paint.  Before, that would have been an area that S-V wouldpitchfork have dominated.

I am going with the Devils by 12 this afternoon.

I was thinking this week about the situation at Z-R.  They play their guts out and just overmanned.  They basically are a school the size of a GEC or an SEC school and playing in what is a 2A schedule now.  One of these nights, they will surprise someone and knock them off.

CARRIER MILLS (6-10) at THOMPSONVILLE (3-8) 6p.m. start

Even though they are in the same conference this is a non conference game.  The first conference game that is played is the only one that counts in the conference standings.

The Tigers come into this one banged up.  Out of the thirteen on

The two teams in the first matchup at DeWitt gymnasium back in December

their roster, nine are only healthy.  He mentioned that going into the GEC tournament week after next, that Carrier Mills is playing the second best in the conference.

Gibbs, Hill, Jackson and the rest of Keil Peebles crew are on the upswing.  What looked to be a promising year for T’ville at the first is deteriorating in a hurry.

I won’t be there but Coach Peebles will come out in a 2-1-2 zone.  I am going with the Wildcats by 15.
