Ron Winemiller on the Benton Rangers summer

by Steve Dunford

I asked  Benton Ranger Basketball Coach Ron Winemiller about what kind of Summer his team had on the hardwood,

He said they played about forty games.   The Rangers faced Goreville, an opponent in the Goreville Invitational in December, they also faced Vandalia, Greenville, Paris and Teutopolis.  They faced Missouri schools of Dexter,  Benton, and Cape Central.

On one trip to the 217, the Rangers were commended for helping a local farmer load a water tank in the back of a farmer’s truck.  The website shared a link of the story from the Benton Gazette.  Below is the link.

Rangers to the Rescue!

Gone will be Timmy Henson, Austin Wills, and Derek Oxford, Henson and Oxford were for year starters, counting Timmy’s freshman year at Thompsonville.   However the five of Gehrig Wynn, Cade Thomas, Hamilton Page, Parker Williams, and Blaine Pankey has played together since Junior High.  I am unsure of his other Seniors, but Coach Winemiller said his seniors will have to log the bulk on the minutes this year, but he was impressed with the growth of the underclassmen.

He said Mt. Carmel, Effingham St. Anthony and T-Town were the best three Illinois teams the Rangers played this summer.

I did not talk about the Southern Illinois to River race, as I talked about the GEC race with Pete Gordon.  I would have the Rangers as an upper division team.

With Blake Dure back, and point guard Will Gibbs transferring from Carrier Mills, I think Harrisburg will be the team to beat in the conference. Since the Bulldogs will be 2A this year,  I would not be one but surprised if Randy Smithpeters makes another trip to Peoria with this team.

Daryl Murphy just reloads every year down at Murphysboro.  Joe Hosman was singing the blues down at Massac County, and ended up 6-4 in the conference, and a .500 record on the season.

Herrin will have its third coach in third years in Benton Native Sayler Shurtz.   They will be pretty young, with a good nucleus.  I can guarantee you this, West Frankfort will win more than one game in the SIRR Ohio this year.  The Redbrids have a very strong junior class coming in.  If I was an opposing team, I would not want to go to Max Morris Gym this season.  There will be a lot of upsets there.

In four months, the Rangers will be tipping it up at the Goreville Tournament.  It does not seem like in four weeks, teams will be under the Friday Night Lights.

President Trump announced on Wednesday that the United States will no longer “accept or allow” transgender people in the United States military, saying American forces “must be focused on decisive and overwhelming victory” and could not afford to accommodate them.

Mr. Trump made the surprise declaration in a series of posts on Twitter, saying he had come to the decision after talking to generals and military experts, whom he did not name.

Here are the tweets below:

After consultation with my Generals and military experts, please be advised that the United States Government will not accept or allow……….Transgender individuals to serve in any capacity in the U.S. Military. Our military must be focused on decisive and overwhelming………victory and cannot be burdened with the tremendous medical costs and disruption that transgender in the military would entail. Thank you

Mike Madigan doesn’t care

http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/opinion/commentary/ct-michael-madigan-destroy-illinois-perspec-20170724-story.html

(Op.-Ed. Piece from  41st District State Representative Grant Wehrli (R-Naperville, submitted to the Chicago Tribune.)

A few days ago, state Rep. Sam Yingling, D-Grayslake, wrote a Tribune commentary accusing Gov. Bruce Rauner of not caring about the people of Illinois and state government’s role in serving their needs. I’m here today to disagree. To borrow the opening construction my colleague used in attacking the governor:

Mike Madigan doesn’t care. That’s the conclusion I’ve come to after serving in the General Assembly since early 2015.

It has been clear that he doesn’t care about the financial well-being of the residents and businesses of Illinois since he first took office in 1971. Unbalanced budgets, chronic overspending, increased debt load, underfunded pension schemes and expansion of entitlement programs have left Illinoisans paying one of the highest overall tax burdens of all 50 states. And it is still not enough to pay for his reckless ways. Madigan doesn’t care.

Miners Drop Close Contest To Boomers

From the Southern Illinois Miners

The Southern Illinois Miners fell in a close ballgame 3-2 to the Schaumburg Boomers at Rent One Park on Tuesday night as the first-place Boomers claimed the series opener by warding off a pair of late Miners’ threats.

Schaumburg grabbed a 1-0 lead with three straight two-out singles in the top of the first inning against Chris Washington, with Andrew Broadbeck’s hit driving in Zack Weigel with the game’s first run. The Miners would rally to not only tie the game in the third inning, but take the lead as well- Ben MooreAnthony Critelli and London Lindley all singled to load the bases with no one out leading off the frame. After a double-play ground ball scored the tying run from third base, Romeo Cortina lined a triple to left-center field off Boomers starter Conrad Wozniak (2-1) to put Southern Illinois in front 2-1.

Washington (1-3) settled down after the first inning to retire eight Boomers in a row spanning three scoreless frames in the second, third and fourth before the Boomers tied the game in the fifth inning. James Keller led off with a double and scored two batters later on a sacrifice fly by Kyle Ruchim to tie the game again at 2-2. In the next inning, Weigel led off with a solo home run to right field to put Schaumburg ahead 3-2.

The Miners would threaten the tied score three times from there, getting the tying run into scoring position in the sixth, eighth and ninth innings, but could not bring that run home as both bullpens made the score stand as the final margin. They also got a potential lead run on base in the eighth and ninth, but the Schaumburg relief corps kept them off the scoreboard both times as the Miners received three scoreless frames on the hill from Kyle Tinius and Kyle Grana to keep them within striking distance.

Lindley led the Miners’ attack by going 3-for-4, and Washington pitched a quality start, taking the loss despite six innings of work with no walks and six strikeouts as Southern Illinois dropped the series opener. The Miners will look to bounce back on Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m., with Corey Sessions getting the start for the home team and Michael Wood pitching for the Boomers.

The Southern Illinois Miners are the 2016 Frontier League West Division Champions, the 2014 and 2015 Frontier League East Division Champions and the 2012 Frontier League Champions. They have been awarded the Frontier League Organization of the Year award three times since their inception, and also set a new Frontier League attendance record in 2007, their inaugural season. A woman in West Frankfort, Illinois, almost lost her life in a flood in April. Her car was almost completely submerged in water when first responders and good Samaritans jumped in the water to save her.

The three men were recognized at an event Tuesday by Illinois State Rep. Dave Severin.

April 29 is a day Dustin Shelton will never forget. He and his family were traveling to West Frankfort to visit relatives when his car approached a flooded road. He got out of his car, and was told that a woman was trapped in her car in the water.
