8:15 p.m. update: Napier…Young could still be in Franklin County

by Steve Dunford

The Whereabouts of Napier and Young are still in question. Kelly was caught after 11:00 p.m. last night in Marion, KY

WEST CITY. IL –  I just spoke with a representative of the West City Police Department.  This is still an active case.  There is the possibility that Randall Napier and Alonzo Young could still be in Franklin County, escaping from a prison transport

Charles Kelly was captured in Marion KY last night, as he escaped the van at the county Jail.   He escaped when there was a transfer of five female prisoners at the Crittenden County Jail.

Here is some information on Young from a story that WSIL ran last night, with the link below.

According to South Dakota Department of Corrections records, Alonzo Young was serving consecutive 22.5 year and 30 year sentences for first degree robbery and aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer.

According to a report by the Argus Leader, Young was serving time on the robbery conviction earlier this year when he attacked a correctional officer with a homemade knife.

I still haven’t received a call from Prison Transport Services in Nashville TN.  This is the company that were transporting the inmates.

Both men are considered dangerous, and they could be possibly armed as well.  Keep your doors locked and all valuables in your vehicle secured.  Do not pick up any hitch hikers.

Report any suspicious activity to your local law enforcement agencies.

Feel free to send me a message on Facebook, call me at (618) 937-0253, call or text me at (618) 513-1274 if a media source has any additional information on this case.  I know a lot of information seems like it runs in circles.  I would be happy to answer any questions that you would have if I know the answer.

I understand the frustration that has been shared.  I will keep you informed with the latest information possible.

5:45 p.m. update on the escaped convicts

by Steve Dunford

The Whereabouts of Napier and Young are still in question. Kelly was caught after 11:00 p.m. last night in Marion, KY

I just recently been in contact with the Crittenden County Jail.  I asked the jailer if they had an active case down there at this time.  All he said was “they are not our prisoners.”

He referred me to Prison Transportation Services based out of Nashville TN, to give me information on the other two prisoners at large whereabouts.   A representative from that company declined to comment, but gave me the telephone number to his supervisor.  I placed a call into him.  I will share the information when I receive it.

WPSD-TV is reporting that Charles Kelly was noted as missing when there was an exchange of five female prisoners at the Crittenden County jail.  They did not mention in their story any information about the other two men.

I have been asked several times today if I had anymore information regarding whether the other two men are in Franklin County.  It is a question I wish I had the answer too.

When I get any additional information, I will pass it along as soon as possible.  Please contact me if you see where another media source has new information.

I would stay diligent, stay safe, and report any suspicious activity to your nearest law enforcement agency.

Coello Chicken and Dumplin’ Dinner Tomorrow

by Steve Dunford

COELLO, IL –  In a second Sunday of the month tradition for over 40 years, the Coello Dumplin’ Gang will be hosting their chicken and dumping dinner at the Coello Community Building.

According to North City (Coello) mayor Curtis Overton, the proceeds go to the improvement of the village.  Currently they are trying to make upgrades to their park.  In the past, proceeds helped purchase a new fire truck.  Also, there is a community wide Christmas party with part of the revenue.

The hours are 11-2, and you can have all the dumplings you can eat, green beans, slaw, drink and dessert for $8.

Chistopher Lady Bearcats finish third in the SIJHSAA State Tournament

PINCKNEYVILLE, IL –  Just like the boys, the CES Lady Bearcats softball team took home third place at the SIJHSAA State Tournament by defeating Creal Springs Adams, 12-7.

Also like the boys, they fell to Trico in the semi-finals by the score of 4-1 on Tuesday.

Bearcats take 3rd Place in the SIJHSAA State Tournament Thursday

PINCKNEYVILLE, IL –  Peyton Mazur hit a base clearing double driving in three runs as the Christopher Bearcats defeated the Hardin County Cougars 6-3 in eight innings, two win third place in the SIJHSAA state tournament on Thursday afternoon.   Mazur started on the mound for the Bearcats, pitching six innings and scoring two runs.     Mazur threw a no hitter in the Bearcats quarterfinal win over O’Fallon Carrel.

Mason Goins pitched two innings of scoreless relief to pick of the win for the Bearcats.  Bryson Cullum took the loss for the Cougars.

“When we lost the coin toss, for the third straight time. And with the rain the other day thought maybe I was just in it for bad luck,. We scored 1st but then gave it back on some defensive mishaps too early in game. First  batter hits to 1st base, we drop ball running to bag to get the out. Then  a hit to RF by Cougar Catcher Jake Vaughn kept turning to the far corner of the field for an in the park homerun.

Then we start 2nd inning out with an error at 2B where pop up drops on grass. Start third with single. Eventually scoring on wild pitch. We got out of the inning on a heads up play by pitcher Peyton Mazur covering third on blip hit behind third.
Offensively bottom of order came through big in the 5th. 7-9 got on base and scored for us.”, said Bearcat coach Tim Leffler.

The rain Coach Leffler referred to was a big inning Trico put together in the semi-final game during a down pour, before play was stopped in a 5-4 loss to the Pioneers in the semi-finals.

A full box score of the game is below.

One of the alleged escaped convicts caught in Crittenden County KY

http://crittendenpress.blogspot.com/2017/10/at-least-1-of-3-escapees-left-custody.html

MARION, KY (Crittenden Press – Please click on the link above for the full story.  Here is an excerpt below)

The escapee has been taken into custody.

Marion Assistant Police Chief Bobby West said employees and patrons at Five Star Convenience Center had notified authorities that Kelly had been in the store asking about where he might find a motel.

They began looking for the escapee downtown and a passerby saw Kelly hiding behind a garbage can at the Farmers Market on Main Street. Police were hailed and they chased him across Main Street where he was eventually taken into custody behind Five Star. He was found trying to hide in a overgrown, weedy area behind The Crittenden Press at 11:15pm.

TIMELINE OF EVENTS OF THE ALLEGED ESCAPE CONVICTS

by Steve Dunford

I know people are getting bits and pieces of the story on social media. I am still learning the ropes as a journalist.
One thing that I have learned in this situation is to keep things in ONE story and pass updates along. Our website has been down since Wednesday night. Social Media is all that I have at my disposal. Here is a timeline. The times are approximate.
I will share information that I hear from a house fire or an accident immediately so people can avoid the area. In this situation I was waiting for law enforcement to share.

Friday Night

6:30 PM. I knew something was going down at McDonalds. I did not know what it was at the time. I knew surveillance cameras were being checked around all the area businesses.

7:30 PM. The rumors began to circulate on social media what was going on. I was waiting to get the OK from law enforcement to share. I called WSIL-TV. They told me they had a reporter on the way.
In times of emergency, media sources put their information together. They told me they would contact me. I told them I would check their website for any information that needs to be passed along, and don’t worry about getting a hold of me.

9:00 P.M. Channel 3 broke the story. All the rumors that have been floating around, I confirmed.

9:30 P.M. I was told of the story the Crittenden County KY, paper ran, in which it was not discovered the inmates escaped until the van arrived at their jail. They were federal inmates being transported by a private company.

10:15 P.M. There was an attempted break-in in the Whittington Area, in which the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office and the Illinois State Police was handling the case.

11:00 P.M. This is when mugshots were being shared of the escapees.

When I woke up this morning, I discovered that Charles Kelly was caught last night behind the Crittenden County Press office at 11:15 p.m.
When I contacted the West City Police Department this morning, they said there was nothing new on the investigation.
I have also been in contact with Crittenden County authorities, and they still are investigating.
One question that I have in this case is whether the inmates were being transported to a federal facility and they were being housed overnight, or whether Crittenden County houses federal inmates in an agreement similar to what Jefferson County has here at home.
I will post any new information and will update this timeline when I find out anything additional.
