The fire that ripped through the Grecian Steak House in Pinckneyville didn’t just leave a building in ruins, it left a community devastated.

“Not only was it a tragic thing that happened, it was a tragic thing that happened at Christmas,” said Peggy Sims, with the Pinckneyville Chamber of Commerce.

Lawsuit attempting to block taxpayer funded elective abortions in Illinois to be heard this week

SPRINGFIELD – Illinois will be the first state in the nation to allow tax dollars for elective abortions after the first of the year, but an expedited lawsuit in Sangamon County circuit court Thursday seeks to block implementation.

Federal Medicaid dollars can cover abortions for rape, insest or if the mother’s life is in jeopardy, but Gov. Bruce Rauner signed House Bill 40 this summer that allows state tax dollars for elective abortions, shocking his Republican base.

State Sen. Dan McConchie, R-Hawthorn Woods, said Rauner promised Republicans he would veto or amend the measure.

SIU is 0-11 in the McLeod Center, which opened in 2007, and has lost 14-straight overall at Northern Iowa. The last road win at UNI came on Jan. 22, 2003 under head coach Bruce Weber, an 88-78 overtime victory. Last year, the Salukis were 4-5 in MVC road games, winning at Missouri State, Evansville, Loyola and Indiana State.

Sean Lloyd Jr. named to Las Vegas Invitational All-Tournament team

His tournament averages were 17.0 points, 4.3 rebounds, 3.2 assists, 2.0 steals, 35.5 minutes. Lloyd is the nephew of two-time MVC player-of-the-year Lewis Lloyd, who played two seasons at Drake (1980-81) and seven years in the NBA. Another uncle, Daryl Lloyd, also played at Drake and led the team in scoring in 1985 with 17.9 points per game.

50 Influencers of Rend Lake College: Randall Crocker Leading into the Future

By Reece Rutland

NOTE:  This is a series that featured the Rend Lake College Board as a whole.  I decided to break it down individually.  Today, Randall Crocker of Sesser will be featured. sd

Randall Crocker is a two-time board of trustees member, having served from 1997-2009 before being reappointed to the board in 2013 to fill a vacant seat. In 2015, he was elected to an additional four-year term on the board.

“We are glad to welcome Randall back to our board. He brings plenty of experience from his earlier service, and he continues to be a strong supporter of Rend Lake College,” said President Wilkerson at the time of the appointment.

Crocker is a long-time member and chair of the Franklin County Board and owns and operates Crocker Insurance Agency in Sesser with his son Brett.

“I’m very pleased with the way the college is being run. I don’t have any specific goals in mind, but I want to support the administration, because I think they’re doing a great job,” said Crocker.

A former RLC student himself, Crocker is now tied for fourth-longest tenured trustee. He will have sat on the board for a total of 18 years when he completes his current term. Only Marvin Scott (35 years), Dr. Richard Simpson (23 years) and Dr. Allan Patton (22 years) have served longer. David Edmison also served as a trustee for 18 years.

Date set for first ‘Barack Obama Day’

SPRINGFIELD –  Aug. 4, 2018, will be the first time that Illinois will commemorate the date as Barack Obama Day.

Illinois’ General Assembly passed a law that would give Obama an official designation on his birthday. The supporters in Springfield originally wanted to make the day an official state holiday in which all non-vital state services would close.

This drew opposition from lawmakers such as state Rep. Mark Batinick, R-Plainfield, who thinks the state couldn’t afford to give state workers yet another paid holiday.
