Carrier Mills Coach Keil Peebles had his team in a 2-1-2 zone all night as expected, and the cold outside shooting continued for the Tigers who shot 10/45 (22 %) on the night.

The Tigers played a lot of zone most of the night as well being in a 2-3.  They had a tough time stopping Justice Hill down low as he scored 16 on the night. The Wildcats shot 50% from the field and 78% from the line.

Thompsonville only turned the ball over six times on the night in which coach Pete Gordon mentioned they took better care of the basketball.  He said even though T’ville did not shoot the ball well, they got some good looks.  He said they competed much better than the last time out against Hardin County.

Redbrids win – Devils drop their first of the season

by Steve Dunford

WEST FRANKFORT –  In game one, the Sesser-Valier-Waltonville Lady Red Devils experienced their first loss of the season falling to the Herrin Lady Tigers 54-48 in the opening game of the girls side of the West Frankfort Mid Winter Classic yesterday afternoon.

Herrin Coach Bill Green employed a 1-3-1 zone against the Devils and they handled it quite well in the first half.  There were several dribble drive penetrations out of it and a lot of run outs for Jayln Haley.

S-V-W led by double digits in the first half by several times and a late rally by Herrin at the close of the first half sent the teams to the locker room with the Devils having a five-point lead.

One of the keys to the game is when the Devils had the ball around the five minute mark of the third quarter.  They had the lead by seven.  They were very patient attacking the zone and missed a bunny inside.  S-V-W had one of their very few turnovers the next possession.

In the meantime Emma Deaton drains back to back threes for Herrin and it was a big momentum switcher, as the Tigers cut it till one.

Herrin took the lead and slowly built it to as high as eight.  S-V-W cut it to a one posession game late several times, but the gave the number eight team in the last Class 2A their first loss of the season.

Emma Deaton led Herrin with 15 points on the evening. Makayla Smothers added 14, and Maggie Connor had 12 on the evening.

Jaylin Hayley led the Red Devils with 25 on the night and Sami McCowen added nine.

The Hannah’s for both teams which are also their leading scorers Grotauge for Herrin, and Garascia for S-V-W was held to six each.

When I was talking to S-V-W coach Rick Metcalf after the game, he said two of the top teams in Southern Illinois were on the floor this afternoon, we just came up short.

In Game two of the night, Pinckneyville coach Alan Engleheart ran a triangle in two defense against WF most of the night with one defender keying on Morgan Griffith and the other either on Cali Wright or Megan Beery.

Griffith had a game high 33 on the night, three points below her average for the season and Wright had 14 including two deep threes in the first quarter as West Frankfort defeated Pinckneyville 54-45.

The Panthers had the lead whittled to four with three in some change left on the clock but Griffith iced it away from the free throw line.

Megan Breslin led the Panthers in scoring with 16 on the night.  Kiya Hagene added 11 in a losing cause.

The thrid game of the night was a boys game.  Jackson Connor, son of Z-R standout Sean Connor had a game high 25 points and Justin Shadowens had 10 as the Marion Wildcats held on to beat the Cairo Pilots 57-53.

Dave Taylor had 12 points, Malachi Brown 11, and Damarius Taylor added ten points for the Pilots.

Sesser-Valier “blows” past Tornadoes

SESSER – Putting together a great second quarter on Saturday afternoon, the Sesser-Valier Red Devils erased whatever momentum that their opponents had after the first eight minutes. Visiting Zeigler-Royalton, behind an outside scoring offensive, took a 19-18 lead at the end of the first period of play. However that was the end of the Tornadoes’ highlights of this game as the hosts took complete control in the next eight minutes, outscoring Z-R 29-4 to roll to a comfortable 85-56 Black Diamond Conference win in a make up game from the previous night that was moved because of the weather. The storm that Z-R put together in the first quarter didn’t last long enough to bother the Red Devils as Coach Shane Garner saw his team improve to 7-8 on the season and 3-3 in the West Division. Boys high school basketball preview for 1/14/17

Steve Dunford

When you start flipping over the schedule,  familiarity starts to set in.  Both Games on today’s docket has been rescheduled from last night.

ZEIGLER-ROYALTON (1-9)(0-4) at SESSER-VALIER  (2-3)(6-9)  2:30 p.m. start

z-r-logo-2Both teams know each other well.  If Whiting gets hot and the Devils are cold, Z-R could hang around.

With the addition of Austin Bollinger on the inside, the Tornadoes have a way to neutralize Jamie Lance in the paint.  Before, that would have been an area that S-V wouldpitchfork have dominated.

I am going with the Devils by 12 this afternoon.

I was thinking this week about the situation at Z-R.  They play their guts out and just overmanned.  They basically are a school the size of a GEC or an SEC school and playing in what is a 2A schedule now.  One of these nights, they will surprise someone and knock them off.

CARRIER MILLS (6-10) at THOMPSONVILLE (3-8) 6p.m. start

Even though they are in the same conference this is a non conference game.  The first conference game that is played is the only one that counts in the conference standings.

The Tigers come into this one banged up.  Out of the thirteen on

The two teams in the first matchup at DeWitt gymnasium back in December

their roster, nine are only healthy.  He mentioned that going into the GEC tournament week after next, that Carrier Mills is playing the second best in the conference.

Gibbs, Hill, Jackson and the rest of Keil Peebles crew are on the upswing.  What looked to be a promising year for T’ville at the first is deteriorating in a hurry.

I won’t be there but Coach Peebles will come out in a 2-1-2 zone.  I am going with the Wildcats by 15.

The FCHS Lady Redbirds varsity basketball team improved their record to 10-5 Friday as they went on the road and defeated the Massac Co. Lady Patriots 71-54. It’s the first time that the Lady Redbirds varsity has won at Massac Co. since 1998. West Frankfort got off to a slow start and trailed 18-12 after one quarter. From that point on the Lady Redbirds dominated the game. In the 2nd quarter, Morgan Griffith (9) and Cali Wright (7) combined for 16 points as West Frankfort outscored Massac Co. 19-5 to take a 31-23 lead into halftime. Griffith remained hot scoring 12 points in the 3rd quarter to lead her team to a 50-36 advantage.

  •  Benton freshman game vs Harrisburg on tomorrow has been cancelled.
  • Class L Junior High Girls Championship between Benton and DuQuoin at BMS scheduled for tonight has been moved to Tuesday night.

There will be short and sweet previews.  Thank you to everyone who provided school closings and game information.

CHRISTOPHER (10-4)(9-5) at GOREVILLE (3-0)(9-5)

christopher-bearcatsThere is a Battle Royal down at Johnson County tonight.  The teams are more than familiar with each other playing eight times in two years.  Christopher won four times against them last year.

No introductions should be given.  The Bearcats have Bradley Young, Kaelab Pedigo, and Jared Curry.  in the other side of the fence you have Braden Webb and Brant Glidwell.

This week there were some scores that lit things up.  Gabe Schimpf had 18 against Z-R.  Mavis Helton and Peyton Massey had a big game against Sesser-Valier.  You better not foul Cool Hand Luke Bryce Pratt if the Bearcats get the lead.

A lot of points will be put up on that awesome scoreboard they havegoreville down there.  It is going to come down to the benches.  Goreville Coach Todd Tripp has played Cole Tosh, Blaine Dunning , Peyton Massey, and Morgan Bishop a lot.  The first two off the bench for Christopher coach Eric Stallman has played limited minutes. guard Zach Snell and post player Cole Sanders.

I am going with Goreville by five.  I am keeping a close eye on this one.

WEST FRANKFORT (6-7)(0-4) vs MASSAC COUNTY(4-6)(1-2)

wf-redbirdsThis is the second meeting between these two teams.  The Redbirds beat the Patriots 46-33 in the Consolation Championship of the Eldorado Holiday tournament.

Austin Glodich had his way against Massac the first game.  Noah Allen kept Darius massac-countyRoundtree in check.

I would love to see the battle on the bench between Kevin Toney and Joe Hosman tonight.

The Patriots will make some adjustments.  Massac County is a burial ground.  The Redbirds will come out of Metropolis tonight with a one point win.

HAMILTON COUNTY  (4-11)(1-4) at JOHNSTON CITY (0-4) (6-10)

mcleansboroWhen I wrote the story on their game Friday night against Chirstopher, it had over 2,000 views.  Several were from McLeansboro.  With access to video on Foxes Fans.net, I can give them some very good coverage.

Oakley Dial has been dominant.  He was WSIL’s player of the week.  Jake Whipple has been playing well.  Coach Varner has played nine or ten deep.

The Indians have some good athletes.  They live and die by the three.  They do not get their big man, SIU football bound, Max Edwards involved a lot.

The Foxes have played with a lot of good teams.  They gave Harrisburg all they wanted in the BIT.  They have been oh so close several times, but can not get over the hump.  I am going with Hamco by one in a barn burner tonight.

Rangerettes Have Big Second Half- Beat DQ 41-26

Steve Dunford

BENTON-  The Rangerettes withstood a scoring drought and beat the DuQuoin Lady Indains 41-26 last night at Rich Herrin Gym.

Rangerette Coach Andy Sloan had this to say about last night’s victory. “It was a nice win for our team. The defensive effort was outstanding and our offense showed signs of life the second half.”

“We need to continue to be more consistent, especially offensively. It’s getting to be the time of year where you shouldn’t be making mistakes you made in December. Those are the things we have to correct to become a better team.”

“Ally Gischer had a solid game scoring and distributing the ball. Zoe Carlton was as good as she has been all year. Eb Casey has been in a little shooting slump and came out of it tonight.”

Zoe Carson led the Rangeretts on the night with 11 points.  Ally Gischer, who eclipsed the 1,000 mark this week chipped in 10 on the night.  Benton was stellar from the free throw line 16/20 80%  Kate Smith led the Lady Indians on the night with 12 points.

The Rangerettes will be in action tomorrow at Noon against Anna-Jonesboro in the Eldorado Lady Eagle Classic.  Here is the rest of the schedule this week

  • Thrsday 1/19 Gallatin County at 6:20
  • Friday 1/20 Championship Round TBA
  • Saturday 1/21 Championship Round TBA

Here is what coach Andy Sloan had to say about the upcoming tournament; “It is a very competitive field. We play A-J, Vienna, Carmi, Gallatin Co, then a crossover.”

“I think it is a very balanced field. It will be a challenge for us every night and we will have to be ready to play or will be 0-5 before we can catch our breath. We will look for some kids to step up and give us good minutes. We need all out effort all the time to be successful.”
