Saluki Men’s Basketball cruises past Bradley, 85-65

Tom Weber-SIU Media Services

CARBONDALE, Ill. — Southern Illinois unleashed big runs to start both halves and owned a huge advantage on the offensive glass in an 85-65 win over Bradley on Wednesday night at SIU Arena.

The Salukis (13-11, 6-5) started the first half on a 17-2 run and the second half on a 22-6 burst, as they avenged an earlier two-point loss to Bradley in Peoria, a game in which baskets were unforgettably hard to come by.

“(The first game) was all we talked about, all we talked about,” said Saluki head coach Barry Hinson, whose team was 2-for-26 from 3-point in the first meeting. “We got off to such a bad start in Peoria and we talked about the first four minutes of this game would be huge for us.”

The opening salvo was sparked by Armon Fletcher, who scored all 10 of his points on the night during the first five minutes of the game. He started with back-to-back layups and then made a pair of 3-pointers. Leo Vincent came off the bench to cap the 17-2 run with a 3-ball. He was 3-of-4 from downtown for nine points.

Southern need a big cushion, because the offense went without a bucket during the final 8:32 of the first half, allowing Bradley to cut the deficit to 36-30 at halftime. SIU played much of that span with

its two senior leaders — Mike Rodriguez (15 points, six assists) and Sean O’Brien (11 points, four assists) — on the bench with two fouls.

“Sorry, those guys that are coming in right now are doing the best they can, but they’re not Sean O’Brien and Michael Rodriguez,” Hinson said.

The Salukis quickly seized control in the second half with a 6-0 run that featured a jumper by Thik Bol, a steal and layup by Sean Lloyd and a dunk by Bol. Bradley came as close as 10 points on a jumper by Darrell Brown, but a 16-4 run put the game safely out of reach.

“We challenged them in a four-minute media mark timeout and we out-scored them 16-4 and took control of the game from that point on,” Hinson said.

The Braves (8-16, 3-8) lost their sixth-straight game — all by double figures. They shot a respectable 48 percent from the field, but surrendered 16 offensive rebounds that led to 22 second-chance points for SIU. Bradley starts three freshmen, a sophomore and a junior, and could not overcome poor starts to both halves.

“We’ve tried every motivational tactic you can think of with this group this year at halftime and before the game,” said BU head coach Brian Wardle. “It’s pretty draining, to be quite honest, but we need to find that locker room leadership. We’re still developing that.”

The Braves had an especially woeful night from the free throw stripe where they missed more shots (16) than they made (15). Hinson credited the antics of SIU’s swim team, which was seated behind the visitor’s backboard wearing nothing buy skimpy swimwear.

“When a grown man is up there in a Speedo wearing a bikini top, it’s hard as heck to even concentrate, much less make a free throw,” Hinson said. “I met with them tonight and fed ’em pizza before the game and told them how much I appreciated them.”

For the second-straight game, the Salukis have scored a conference-high 85 points and all five starters scored in double figures. Not known as a proficient shooting team, they made 8-of-16 from 3-point range.

There are two league races going on right now. The main event is the battle at the top between Illinois State (11-0) and Wichita State (10-1). Those teams will square off for a rematch in Wichita on Saturday. The undercard is the battle for seeds 3 through 7. Five teams are bunched together with Loyola, Missouri State and SIU tied at 6-5, and Northern Iowa and Drake on their heels at 5-6. SIU plays at Loyola on Saturday in what could turn out to be a pivotal game in the standings.

and his Carrier Mills Wildcats will take the 46-44 victory in the consolation bracket semifinals & However head coach Pete Gordon’s Tigers rallied to make things very interesting in the final minutes and had a shot at a 3-pointer that would have won the game just before the buzzer. The shot attempt from long range on the left wing by freshman Cordon Fitch fell way short as the buzzer as the Wildcats survived and moved to the consy title tilt on Saturday night. & “Walker is a tough kid to guard and he hurt us tonight,” said Coach Gordon. “We need to collectively minimize our errors. Our youth really shows at times tonight and we made mistakes. But I’m proud of the effort tonight and he (Fitch) had an open look but it was just short.” & The Tigers were pretty good offensively as well, hitting 50 percent overall (17-of-34) and 2-of-7 from the 3-point arc.

The illegal actions of a former Cardinals executive that put him in prison will also cost the team draft picks and a punitive fine in one of the harshest penalties enforced by Major League Baseball in recent memory. & And the Houston Astros will directly benefit. & In a decision issued Monday afternoon by commissioner Rob Manfred, the Cardinals have been fined $2 million in damages — possibly the largest ever for one team — and their first two picks in the coming draft have been taken away as a result of an illegal hack into Houston’s database. The two picks, Nos. 56 and 75, will go to the Astros, as will the slot money assigned to those picks. The $2-million fine will also be paid to the Cardinals’ former division rivals.

Zeigler-Royalton gets big win over Elverado Friday night.

Steve Dunford – franklincountynews-com

ZEIGLER –  For decades when you would look at the schedule and you would see Elverado on the schedule, you would think it was an automatic W.

The Falcons left the Black Diamond a couple years for greener pastures in the South Egyptian, to play schools closer to their enrollment.  Last year was rough times as well, as Elverado was 0-26 in their new league.

With a couple of transfers from Carbondale, and everyone returning, good times have returned to Elkville, as the Falcons are sitting at 15-7 on the year.

All year I have been telling teams that Brendan Whiting will have a game where he explodes on someone He had 29 points in seven three pointers and going a perfect 7-7 from the free throw line as Z-R defeated Elverado 69-59  Steven Anderson added 14 on the night for the Tornadoes.

Here is what Coach Matt Morgan had to say about the victory; “It felt good for the simple fact that I feel like that was the first game where we’ve competed for all 32 minutes without any major mental lapses. There were points where we could’ve caved but they stuck through it and it paid of. I’m extremely happy for our all our kids at both levels!”

“Our crowd was unbelievable, especially the student section.”

“It was a total team effort. We had 36 rebounds for the game which is a season high. We controlled the glass and for the most part took quality shots and had quality possessions which allowed our transition defense to be much improved.”

“Jakob Baxter and Franky Rebolledo stepped up when we got into some foul trouble. Those two played some very important minutes for us and contributed in big ways.”

The Tornadoes are 2-13 on the season.  They fell to Waltonville on the road last night 53-28.  They have another tough road test, as they go on the road to face the Goreville Blackcats, Friday night.  If you can not make the long road trip, the game will be streamed on blackcatsnewtork-com.

Tigers have great week – beats Cobden Friday night

by Steve Dunford – franklincounty-news.com

The Thompsonville Tigers had a very good week last week as they split in in two road games, both are not the easiest places to play as visitors.

T’ville gives. a very good Crab Orchard (14-5) team all they wanted Tuesday night 53-47.  I think it is worth mentioning the Trojans made the long trip to play 2A Vandaila on Saturday night and beat the Vandals.

Tuesday night Freshman Corbin Fitch led the Tigers with 23 points. The 5′ 11″sophomore point guard had a double double on the night. He had 13 points and 14 rebounds.  Anthony Darge is becoming more and more of a force in the paint every day.  The 6′ 7″ sophomore center had ten blocks on the night.

Caleb Vaughn led all scorers with 24 points on the night for the Trojans.  McKegar Ferrell added eight on the night.

Here is what Tiger coach Pete Gordon had to say about last Tuedsay night’s game “I couldn’t have been more proud of how our boys competed.  If it had not been for a slow start for us I really feel like we could have pulled one out. There were times when we could have folded, but we kept fighting.  We had it cut to three late but came up a tad short. Now we have to build from this and find a way to win.”

The Tigers found the way to win in a 49-41 win down at Cobden on Friday night.   The win ended an eight game skid for Thompsonville.

Tyson Kessler had a big night for the Tigers again as he scored 17 points on the night.  Anthoney Darge added 14 points, nine rebounds and six blocked shots for T’ville.  John Russell scored 19 and Dylan Lewey added nine to lead the Appleknockers.

Coach Pete Gordon had this to say about the win down at Cobden Friday night. I am so proud of their effort.  “Darge was huge.  We cut down on on the turnovers, shot great shots. and executed well.  We made enough Free-throws down the stretch to pull out a win.”

The Tigers dropped a 65-44 decision to Gallatin County in the opening round of the GEC tournament last night.  They fell to 4-13 on the season. There is a story from last night’s game posted on the website from Jack Bullock of abaselineview.com   They will face Carrier Mills in the consolation bracket at 8:00 p.m. on Thursday at Southeastern Illinois College.

ABV JackHARRISBURG IL- (Jack Bullock “ABV Jack” – abaselineview.com please click on the link to read the full story) Here is a note- I am going to have something put together today about the very good week the Tigers had last week. game….&“We took a page out of last year’s play book, we played them close a couple of times last year so we played them a 2-3 again. In order for us to compete with a team like that we have to keep the game in the 40’s or 50’s and the zone helped us with that tonight,” said Coach Gordon. “I’m real proud of the kids’ effort tonight. But I thought our youth showed up at times, unfortunately. We had some open looks tonight but we also had times when we didn’t get back on defense and you can’t do that against them. They exploited that.” & “For us it has been tough to put 32-minutes together this year because of our youth our margin of error is small. We have been turnover plagued all year,” said Coach Gordon. “But we have to take the bitter with the sweet. It will get better.”

Herrin blows out WF in the third place game of the MWC

Steve Dunford – franklincounty-news.com

WEST FRANKFORT IL-  I watched the first quarter of this one.  I apologize for having to leave due to illness after the first quarter.  The Redbirds just looked wore out Saturday night to me, after giving the number five team in the state in the latest AP poll that came out today, the Eldorado (20-2) all they wanted Friday.

The Redbirds were defeated by the Herrin Tigers 54-35 on Saturday night in the third place game of the Midwinter Classic.

Jack Bullock (ABV Jack) of abaselineview.com had the Eagles moving up to number three in his poll that covers all of the 618 and half of the 217.  He needs to give the Redbirds a little love.  He does not have them cracking the honorable mention this week after having a very good tournament.  Carterville was a signature win for WF.

When I got home, I turned Mike Murphy on.  Rick Westemeyer is one of my favorite people in the world.  I just hadn’t heard Murph call a ball game in the while.  I enjoyed listening to him.

Everyone received some playing time in the game.  Ten players were in the scoring column for the Redbirds, eleven for the Tigers.

There was no one in double figures in the game, which was unusual. For West Frankfort, Lucas Wolfe led the Redbirds with six on the night.  DiAngelo Russell and Kyle Hammers added five.  It is noteworthy the Herrin Defense held Noah Allen to two points, and Austin Glodich scoreless.

For Herrin, DJ Spell led all scorers with nine points on the night. Bronson Nessler, Drew Ringel, and Ty Downen added eight.

The Redbirds (8-10) turn to River-to-River Ohio play traveling to Davenport Gym (The Airport Hanger) on Friday to face Randy Smithpeters’ and the Harrisburg Bulldogs.  They are at Max Morris Gym on Saturday to face the Anna-Jonesboro Wildcats.

Herrin (13-5)  has a big weekend, as they travel to Rich Herrin gym to face the Benton Rangers.   The Rangers are the number six team in the state in Class 3A in the new Associated Press poll that came out today.  They travel to Mt. Vernon on Saturday Night to face Doug Creel’s Mt.Vernon Rams.
