SIU WORKS ON SITUATIONAL FOOTBALL DURING TEAM’S FIRST FALL SCRIMMAGE

by John Lock, Associate Sports Information Director, Southern Illinois University, Carbondale Media Services

CARBONDALE,  IL – The Southern Illinois football team held its first scrimmage of fall camp on Saturday morning in Saluki Stadium.

The scrimmage was the seventh practice of the season and just the third in full pads. The Salukis spent the first half of practice on individual and team drills before moving on to a 65-play situational scrimmage.

“For our team to take that next step, we need to recognize the situations,” head coach Nick Hill said. “We have good players, but it’s making them realize the down and distance. Where are we at on the field? What’s the game plan for these different situations? If we can take a step forward in that, we’ll be a better team.”

The first situation of the day was with the ball on the 25-yard line. After that, they were all special situations, including the two-minute drill, red zone, and both goal lines.

“We weren’t at the point yet to crank it up and do a game-like scrimmage,” Hill said. “This was good for us. It was a practice-like setting, and we’ll get better and have good film from it.”

Southern’s first-team defense was particularly impressive. Facing SIU’s first-string offense, which led the MVFC in total offense each of the last two years, Southern’s defense allowed just 58 yards in 23 plays (2.5 yards per play).

SIU’s first team defense didn’t allow a touchdown, including three-straight stuffed runs while the offense worked on its goal-line package. Cody Crider made two big plays, a TFL and a sack on third downs. Jefferson Vea picked off a pass for the defense’s only forced turnover.

Offensively, the biggest plays came from the second unit. Tanner Hearn hit Raphael Leonard on a double move for a 97-yard touchdown. Cameron Walter ripped off a 43-yard rush, as well, which set up a touchdown. On the third team, Brandon George hit E’mare Hogan for a pair of long gains, including one sensational leaping catch.

The Salukis head into their second week of practice and will have a more complete scrimmage next Saturday night. The team’s season opener is Sept. 9 in Saluki Stadium vs. Mississippi Valley State.

ST. LOUIS, MO – The Missouri Valley Conference will honor its past when the league conducts its annual Hall of Fame induction ceremony in St. Louis on Friday, March 2, 2018.

The 21st MVC Hall of Fame class features two long-time administrators in Bill Rowe (Missouri State) and Lois Patton (Evansville); a women’s softball Olympian in Dani Tyler of Drake; two former track/cross country standouts in Mary Ellen Hill-Schupbach (Bradley) and Christian Goy (Illinois State); and Southern Illinois’ Darren Brooks, the only player in league history to win both the Larry Bird Trophy and men’s basketball Defensive Player of the Year honor twice.

The league will conduct its annual Hall of Fame ceremony as part the State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Men’s Basketball Championship next March 1-4. The March 2 festivities will begin with an 8:00 a.m. breakfast, followed by the induction ceremony at 8:30 a.m.

Tickets to the 2018 Hall of Fame event – scheduled to be held in the Peabody Opera House which is adjacent to Scottrade Center – can be obtained by calling the league office at (314) 444-4300. Tickets are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

“The Missouri Valley Conference has always been recognized for the great success of its athletics programs, with a rich history that dates back more than a century,” said Commissioner Doug Elgin. “Our MVC Hall of Fame has provided us with an opportunity to honor the student-athletes, coaches, administrators and contributors who have played important roles in the Conference and in intercollegiate athletics.

“The individuals we will be honoring in the Class of 2018 are representative of the men and women who have preceded them in our Hall of Fame. They’ve brought significant honor to themselves, their institutions and to the Conference. We are truly humbled to have this opportunity to salute them for their achievements. In a year in which we are celebrating 25 years of women’s athletics in the MVC, we’re excited to announce our six-person class, which includes three women who positively impacted women’s athletics at their institutions.”

Cardinals issue statement regarding the Rally Cat

Cardinals-MLB photo

As everyone observed during Wednesday night’s game, Lucas Hackmann, a member of our grounds crew, secured the stray cat in the outfield and exited the playing surface at the left field gate and walked up towards the main concourse at Gate 3. He then let the cat down outside of Gate 3 near the Stan Musial statue and went immediately to first aid to attend to his scratch and bite injuries.

At that point, as our ushers tried to contain the cat, a fan grabbed it and claimed it was hers. As she left the ballpark, our security team caught up with her and asked her some questions. She then abruptly left with the cat. We understand from media accounts that the woman intended to take it home and care for it, but lost track of it in City Garden.

We are hopeful someone will find the cat and contact us so we can properly care for it. Our grounds crew is working on developing a stray animal protocol to ensure the safety of both crew and animal should this happen again. In the meantime, the Cardinals are looking to scratch and claw their way back to the top of the division standings.

Miners Drop Rubber Match To CornBelters

From the Southern Illinois Miners

The Southern Illinois Miners fell 5-1 to the Normal CornBelters on Thursday night at Rent One Park in the rubber match of the three-game series as the visitors won the set two games to one.

After a scoreless first two innings by Robby Rowland and Scott Sebald on the mound for their respective teams in front of an announced crowd of 6,395 on “Stand Up For Blue” Law Enforcement Appreciation Night, Normal broke through in the third inning with two outs when Brian Hakes was hit by a pitch and Yeixon Ruiz followed with a triple to make it 1-0. Santiago Chirino then singled up the middle to score Ruiz and double the lead to 2-0.
Rowland (0-1) settled down from there to throw scoreless frames in the fourth and fifth innings, but Normal would chase him in the top of the sixth. After two straight singles opened the frame, Justin Fletcher laid down a sacrifice bunt to third base which was thrown wide of first for an error, bringing home a run and making the score 3-0. Deigo Cedeno followed with an RBI groundout for a 4-0 lead, and Miguel Torres’ RBI double extended the advantage to 5-0 in favor of the CornBelters.

Southern Illinois got on the board in the bottom of the sixth inning on a solo home run by Ryan Sluder off of Sebald (7-1) to cut the deficit to 5-1, but the Miners got no closer as despite having a runner on base in every inning of the game, they could not muster the clutch hit, going 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position and leaving 11 men on base for the contest.
Romeo Cortina finished 3-for-4 in the game while Anthony Critelli went 2-for-3 with a double for Southern Illinois offensively, and the Miners also received scoreless relief from their bullpen, with Paul Young, Tre Hobbs and Nick Palacioskeeping the game at 5-1, but it was not enough in the rubber match defeat as Sebald completed seven innings for the CornBelters to get the win, scattering six hits and four walks with four strikeouts.

Southern Illinois next treks to Evansville to begin a weekend series at Bosse Field against the Otters on Friday night at 6:35 p.m. Corey Sessions will open up the series on the hill for the Miners.

The Southern Illinois Miners are the 2016 Frontier League West Division Champions, the 2014 and 2015 Frontier League East Division Champions and the 2012 Frontier League Champions. They have been awarded the Frontier League Organization of the Year award three times since their inception, and also set a new Frontier League attendance record in 2007, their inaugural season. ATTENTION JUNIOR HIGH BASEBALL-SOFTBALL COACHES AND AD’s

I would like to do a daily page on the junior high baseball and softball action regarding the schools of the county each fall.

If I could get someone to send me the score, your pitchers performance on the mound, your top hitters, and your record.  If someone could send me a schedule, I would appreciate it.

Around the first of September, I would like to do a story on your team, with a team photo, how the season is going, and mention something about every player.

If you are an athletic director that is reading this, I would like to do something similar with every high school fall sport.

You can call the information to me at 937-0253, or call my cell at 513-1274.  The best way would be to e-mail me at sdunford1970@hotmail.com, or message me, Steve Dunford, on Facebook.

Thank you.

Miners Rally To Beat Normal, Even Series

From the Southern Illinois Miners

MARION, IL – The Southern Illinois Miners got outstanding pitching on Wednesday night against the Normal CornBelters at Rent One Park, and came back from an early deficit to go ahead on a two-run burst in the sixth inning that included a go-ahead homer by Craig Massoni in a 3-2 triumph to even the midweek series.

Normal again struck first, as they scored an unearned run off Zach Cooper on a groundout by Aaron Dudley for a 1-0 lead in the first inning, then added a second run in the second frame, also on an RBI groundout by Brian Hakes, to make the score 2-0. Cooper (4-8), however, would shut down the CornBelters from there, allowing just two baserunners in the next four innings while striking out five batters in that span to help keep the game close.

In the fourth inning, the Miners got on the board when Craig Massey and Nolan Earley led off against Shawn Blackwell (5-4) with singles to put runners at first and third base for Massoni, who hit into a double play to score Massey and make it 2-1. Then in the sixth inning, Massey reached on an error by Jesus Solorzano in left field, then was able to score from second base when Earley flew out to center field in the next at-bat thanks to a throwing error by Diego Cedeno, with the ball bouncing on the warning track along the length of the CornBelters dugout to tie the score at 2-2. Massoni then drove a 2-0 pitch the other way into the Miners’ bullpen for a go-ahead solo home run to put Southern Illinois ahead 3-2.

The Miners’ bullpen would hold the line from there, with John Werner pitching a flawless ninth inning for his West Division-leading 17th save of the season. Cooper earned his second-straight win on the mound with his third-straight “quality start,” allowing just one earned run on three hits in six innings with two walks and five strikeouts. Massey led the charge by going 2-for-4 at the plate as Southern Illinois won the low-scoring contest despite Blackwell pitching the entire game for Normal, striking out nine in the losing effort.

Southern Illinois will go for the series win in a rubber match on Thursday night at 7:05 p.m., with Robby Rowland making his home debut for Southern Illinois opposite Normal southpaw Scott Sebald on “Stand Up For Blue” Night as the Miners will honor their local law enforcement before and during the game.
