2017-18 ABV SUB-SECTIONAL MOCK SEEDINGS

NOTE;  I was going to release mine today.  I started doing some notes on 2A, and I was nearly identical with Jack Bullock, so I will second his motion.

I know the West Frankfort Redbirds have only won four ball games, but they were going to get a six from me.  They are still the best team in Southern Illinois that has only won four ball games

In the Gallatin County/Meridian regional-sectional complex I was identical with Jack, except swapping Century with Egyptian for the eighth and tenth seeds. I came close to putting Pope County above both of them but I did not want to show too much GEC Bias.

In the Zeigler-Royalton/Norris City-Omaha-Enfield complex, we are all over the place with each other.  I will be releasing that soon. -Steve

Four Franklin County programs mentioned in ABV Jacks latest rankings

In Jack Bullock’s latest rankings the Christopher Bearcats are ranked fourth, and the Sesser-Valier Red Devils fifth with Thompsonville knocking at the door being in the top 10 in 1A.

Even though they are 4-15 the West Frankfort Redbirds are honorable mention in 2A.  He had some kind words about the Redbirds.

LOOKING BACK NEARLY 16 YEARS: The birth of S-V-W-W football

SESSER –   I came across this yesterday when I was checking the Lady Devils schedule on the website schedulestar.com

I have used the site over the years to check out schedules for the teams.  All six Franklin County High Schools have a page on the website.

They have excerpts from stories of the school’s athletic history.  This article was on the Sesser-Valier page of Schedulestar, which also goes by the name Big Teams now as well.

This story was in the Red Devil’s history page.  It was the story when the S-V school board approved the co-op.  The story was written by Jim Muir when he wrote for the Southern Illinoisan.

Stories about the history of Franklin County perform very well on the webpage.  You will see more and more content like this.  Steve

Lady Devils win their fifth straight BDC West title

By Jim Muir

The Sesser-Valier-Waltonville Lady Devils won their 61st straight Black Diamond Conference game Wednesday night and won their fifth consecutive conference title with a 75-29 victory on the road at Chester.

S-V-W made short work of the Lady Yellowjackets, jumping out to a 20-8 first quarter lead and extended the advantage to 35-16 at the intermission.

“Our defense was outstanding again tonight,” said SVW Coach Rick Metcalf, who has guided the incredible run during the ‘five-peat.’ “Tucker (Paige) had a huge game for us on the offensive end.”

Tucker took game scoring honors with 30 points, including 12 in the opening stanza.

The victory moved the Lady Devils to 21-2 overall and 10-0 in BDC West play. The Lady Devils have two conference games remaining – January 29 at Goreville and Feb. 1 at home versus Zeigler-Royalton.

Along with Tucker’s 30-point performance the Lady Devils also got double figure scoring from Sami McCowen who tallied 14 points. Rounding out the scoring Jada Hale had seven points, Ella Zahm scored six points, Carlie Page had four points and Paolina Marlo, Rylee Breeze and Adrianna Fedderke all scored two points each.

SVW will jump out of conference action on Saturday (Jan. 27) hosting Anna-Jonesboro. Game time is at 11 a.m.

SESSER –  The Sesser-Valier Red Devils outscored their opponents 24-11 in the fourth quarter to take a nice 64-48 victory from the Goreville Blackcats.

The Devils put four players on the night in double figures as Lukas Gunter led the way with 18 points, Tyler Winchester 13, Preston Launius and Joshua Gunter had ten points each on the night for Sesser-Valier.

Braden Webb led the way for the Blackcats with 14 and Landon Albright added 10.  Post player Tanner Dunn did not play for Goreville, as he was out with the flu.

Sesser Valier improves to (10-5)(5-0) on the season and will make the short trip to Z-R Friday night, before heading into the BIT.

Goreville (11-4)(2-2) will host the Christopher Bearcats on Friday night before facing the Carbondale Terriers in the first Round of the Superman Classic.

ABV Jack’s new ranklings: Devils, Bearcats ranked, Tigers, Redbirds honorable mention

Jack Bullock knows the pule on 1A and 2A Boys Basketball for Springfield south more than anyone.  There are a lot of polls floating around and I think they are a little off.

One thing that Jack mentioned is Jared Curry of Christopher will be back Friday night against Goreville.  The Bearcats have survived the storm since he has been injured.  Several have stepped up including Gage Hawkins in his absence.
