FOWLER WEEK IN REVIEW MAY 15 – 19

SPRINGFIELD, IL – A “de-coupled Grand Bargain” was the focus of attention at the State Capitol this week, according to State Sen. Dale Fowler (R-Harrisburg).

Despite the opposition of Fowler and his Senate Republican colleagues, the legislative majority shoved through their 15th consecutive unbalanced budget. The budget was predicated on $1.2 billion in savings through a potentially unconstitutional “pension reform” plan, which would likely diminish benefits guaranteed under the Illinois Constitution.

The Illinois Senate acted on eight pieces of the original legislative package intended to bring an end to the two-year budgetary impasse. Other components of the package included an expansion of gaming, a short-term property tax freeze, short-term borrowing without a guarantee of paying down the backlog of bills.

Senator Fowler was pleased by the gaming expansion which would call for a gaming license to be issued in unincorporated Williamson County. The gaming license would add economic opportunities in the 59th District, along with the expansion of positions at other already establish casinos and horseracing facilities.

A smaller component of the “Grand Bargain” focusing on procurement reforms passed the Senate will nearly unanimous approval. The revision of the government contracting process will be streamlined and enable universities and agencies to get “more bang for the buck,” enabling the cost of government to be slightly less.

The Senate Republicans were displeased by a bailout for the grossly mismanaged, fiscally strapped Chicago Public School (CPS) system. After many weeks of meaningful negotiations on a school funding reform package, the Senate sponsor of the legislation insisted that a $250 million in special deals be left in for the CPS. Additionally, Southern Illinois taxpayers would be left holding the bill for Chicago’s school pension system.

Senator Fowler hopes that both sides of the negotiating table will continue to work on talks that will settle the budget impasse. It is imperative that a balanced budget with significant reforms is passed by the scheduled adjournment on May 31 or the results could be catastrophic.

Kelly Mason: The first female play-by-play person in Southern Illinois

by Steve Dunford

Before I get into taking about Kelly Mason, allow me to give a little history of WEBQ’s coverage of sports.

All my life I listened to high school basketball on WEBQ in Harrisburg.  The station always covered more than the Bulldogs. They cover have the GEC heavily. Over the years.

Since WKSI in Eldorado, went off the air nearly a couple of decades ago, the station covers the Eagles.  WEBQ-FM is now on the old WKSI frequency of 102.3.

Before then WEBQ-FM’s frequency was 99.9  It was known as Rock 100.  Several years ago Zimmer Broadcasting (now River Radio) bought the 50,000 watt blowtorch, and it is now Z-100..

There were three play by play men that always had the WEBQ sound as I call it; Mackie Nichols, Dave Bard and Wyatt Drake. These legends should never be forgotten for their broadcasting ablility and their dedication.

Occasionally on High School broadcasts, you would hear Dr. W (Larry Walton) doing color.  He tried to set the Guinness book of World Record for staying on the air consecutively the longest. He fell short by a few hours.  You would also hear Briggs Gordon (aka. Uncle Briggs) as a color man.

The station has always been a trendsetter covering sports.  Several nights, they broadcast and  stream three games on AM, FM, and on the internet.

A few years ago I listened to a T’ville streaming broadcast and Kelly Mason was at the mic.  She has a conversation with the listening audience.  The best comparison I can make of her style is recently retired Dodger broadcaster Vin Scully.

I asked her how she got her start.  She was listening to WEBQ. and heard they needed some on air talent to cover sports. The station was having a live remote at a hardware store, that just opened up in Eldorado.

She was talking to Sales Manager Sonny Dotson and Cathy Horton, who has wore many hats at the station over the years.  She asked them about the position, and the rest is history.

The 1983 Eldorado graduate lettered in many sports, as well as at John A. Logan College.  She went on to be a golfer for SIU.

While she was at Southern, she did a little coaching at John A. Logan. My cousin, Michelle Marvel was on a volleyball scholarship at the time.  She said she knew her well, but lost contact.  I told her that she is a chiropractor, practicing in West Frankfort and Eldorado.

The conversation turned to Redbird Girls Coach Matt Hampleman. I told her that we used to work out together, ate supper at our house a lot, and  was my brothers best man.  She said he is one of the “good guys” in the business.

She then told me that some were not accepting of her, when she got her start.  She said the late West Frankfort broadcaster Bruce A. Fasol, was an encouragement and a great help to her.

Kelly does play by play for several sports for the station.  She told me she has not called a football game yet.  Two sports that are unique she calls, is volleyball and soccer.

The conversation switched to Morgan Griffith.  I told her I wish I could have been at every game, but my health prevented me from it.  I told her that she is an incredible individual, and she already has an Associates degree from John A. Logan.  Most of all she is an outstanding young lady.

The conversation switched to the GEC.  I told her that I watch every Thompsonville game on YouTube and that is mainly how keep up with the conference. I told her that I have developed an awesome relationship with T’ville coach Pete Gordon and his wife. I then told her I talk to Gallatin County coach Doug Miller and there have been times I have talked with Hardin County coach Rodney Lane to the wee hours of the morning.

This is what she said about the GEC.  “I love covering that conference.  They gyms are packed every night.  It gives you a Hoosiers feel.

She told me that she would like to see more girls coverage.  She covered nearly 40 softball games for Harrisburg and Eldorado.  She got her wish.  WNSV in Nashville carried their game against West Frankfort.    Michael Marlo, who is growing by leaps and bounds as a broadcaster, was doing play-by-play for Q 106, during the Benton-Harrisburg game.

To promote her broadcasts, she had 2,000 business cards printed up, and handed them out to the other team.  She encouraged them to listen to the broadcasts  She said if I don’t have listeners, all I am doing is practicing.

She did not call last Tuesday night’s regional game from the broadcast booth.  She was sitting in a lawn chair among the Harrisburg faithful. I thought this was cool sitting in the crowd calling a game.

Last Thursday we swapped places.  I was in Harrisburg with my good friend Brian Johnson, covering the regional game with West Frankfort.  She was in West Frankfort covering the regional championship game between Harrisburg and Nashville.

There was a rain delay at West Frankfort.  The cell that prompted the Severe Thunderstorm Warnings missed Harrisburg.  After getting home from Harrisburg, I was able to start listening to her broadcast at the top of the third.

Nashville scored two runs in the top of the sixth to win the game 2-0.  She painted a wonderful picture of excitement.  After the tough loss, she said several times the Bulldogs were the best 17-19 team you would see.  She also had some encouraging words in the post game show.

I am going to rewind back a couple of months.  Kelly was flying solo calling the Christopher-Gallatin County game, at the NCOE Class 1A sectional.  The Bearcats were  down by double digits at times during the game.

In the fourth quarter they staged a huge comeback.  It was a barn-burner as the Hawks pulled it out 42-40.

This was also the night that an EF-4 tornado touched down in Perryville, and dissipated just south of Christopher.  She was giving tornado warnings and weather information and not missing a beat calling the tight game.  They were timely, she was sometimes ahead of Channel 12.

The broadcast that night was outstanding.  I am not a radio man, but I think her performance that night, is worthy of being nominated for a Silver Dome award.

I have covered local sports for the second school year now.  One of the great things is the relationships you make along the way.  When I met Kelly Mason last Tuesday, it was like we known each other for 20 years.  I am looking forward to crossing paths with her in the future.

WSIL Unsung Hero: Isaiah’s new leg

A Marion teen is playing his favorite sport with ease thanks to a generous donation.

Isaiah Parrish plays basketball with his friends at Marion Junior High School. He runs up and down the court and sinks his shots with finesse.

But that hasn’t always been the case for this active 14-year-old.

Isaiah was in a lawn mower accident 10 years ago.

Doctors were unable to save his leg.

That was devastating news for his mom, Brandy Parson. She says Isaiah has always been an active kid.

NOTE:  I am very familiar with Nubability, and DuQuoin athlete Sam Kunert during his high school playing career.  He was an inspiration to several people including myself.

Rep. Severin Joins Colleagues in Calling on Attorney General Madigan to Force Legislators to Comply with Balanced Budget Requirements

Press Release From State Representative Dave Severin’s office

SPRINGFIELD, IL Representative Dave Severin (R-Benton) signed a letter with 39 of his Republican colleagues requesting that the Attorney General use her power to force the General Assembly to pass a revenue estimate. A revenue estimate establishes how much the government expects to bring in over the next fiscal year. Using this estimate the General Assembly plans how much it can expect to spend for the next fiscal year. The Illinois Constitution requires the General Assembly to agree on an estimate as the basis for determining a budget.

Representative Keith Wheeler (R-Oswego) penned the letter, calling for the Attorney General to step in. Rep. Severin says it is about time the AG forced the General Assembly to comply with the Constitution.

“It’s common sense that the state shouldn’t spend what we don’t have,” said Severin. “Yet without a revenue estimate, we do not even know how we can expect to be able to spend for the coming year. The majority party has failed in taking the first step toward achieving a balanced budget, and as a result we would like the Attorney General to step in and force their hand.”

As of Friday, only 12 days remain until the May 31 deadline to pass a budget for Fiscal Year 2018. The past two weeks the House of Representatives have spent less than 6 hours in session

The running question at the Franklin County Historic Jail Museum: notorious southern Illinois gangster Charlie Birger couldn’t break out of this jail, can you?

That’s because the historic jail, which was built in 1905, now doubles as an escape room.

He tried to bust his way out, but his attempt was unsuccessful.

Are you smarter than Birger?

WF falls to the Harrisburg Bulldogs in the regional semifinals

by Steve Dunford

HARRISBURG, IL –The West Frankfort Redbird baseball team ended up their season with a 10-12 record, bowing out to the Harrisburg Bulldogs 8-2 on Thursday.  Harrisburg advances to the championship game of their own regional playing the Benton Rangers today.  Because of rain, the game has been rescheduled to 4:30 Monday afternoon.

In the first two pitches of the ball game, it looked like Harrisburg hurler Dalton Lambert was going to have a rough afternoon.  The first pitch of the ball game SS Noah Vance knocked the ball over the LF wall for a home run.  Redbird catcher Peyton Overturf picked up a base hit and scored on a throwing error.  Lucas Wolfe helped himself with a base hit.

The crooked number on the scoreboard for West Frankfort after one half inning was the only runs they would pick up on the afternoon as they led 2-0.

Lambert mowed down the Redbirds as he pitched a complete game, only allowing two hits the rest of the way, striking out eight and walking no one.  He hit four batters on the afternoon.  He helped his own cause going 3-3 from the plate.

Harrisburg put up four runs in the bottom of the first on six base hits.  Lambert, catcher Isaac Crabb, and LF Jack Martin doubled.  Center fielder Jordan Gould, 1B Presley Gauch, and RF Jack Martin picked up base hits.

Brendan Russell picked up a base hit with one out in the top second inning.  A double play erased a potential rally.

Harrisburg put up two more runs in the bottom of third on three singles in a row from Lambert, Gauch, and Crabb.  After three it was 6-2 Harrisburg.

The Redbirds stranded two runners in the top of the fourth.  Wolfe was hit by a pitch and stole second.  Bryson Dorris reached on an error.  Lambert strkes out the side as WF could not get anything going.

Harrisburg tacks on two more in the bottom of the fourth as the fire balling sophomore Brendan Jonson comes out of the pen to give up a couple base hits.  He had three errors committed behind him allowing two unearned runs.  Dorris makes a diving stop at second to field a screaming line drive to bail the Redbirds out.  After four it was an 8-2 Harrisburg.

Johnson had a perfect fifth and sixth inning, and the Redbirds strand two runners in the top of the seventh as Dorris was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning.  Pinch hitter Andrew Strugil picks up a one out single. The Redbrids could not capitalize, as it was an 8-2 Final in favor of the Bulldogs.

Harrisburg improved to 14-18.  They will square off against the Benton Rangers 27-6 in the Harrisburg Class 2A regional, Monday at 4:30 p.m.

Court documents reveal possible financial crisis at Morthland College

WEST FRANKFORT, IL (Brandon Merano, WSIL-TV Please click on the link above to read the full story and accompanying video. Here is an excerpt below. )

Court documents filed through the Franklin County clerk show Morthland College owes the IRS more than $700,000, but the college’s founder and president Tim Morthland owes money to others as well.

Morthland also hasn’t paid his contracting company more than $80,000 for nearly half a year’s work.

News 3 uncovered the documents after Morthland claimed on Thursday the school was “financially sound.”

“We know that we are financially sound, whether we have 20, 40, 60 or 100 students given our current funding base,” explained Morthland.

That statement from Morthland came just a day after the college’s board of trustees decided to cut all athletic programs at the school made up almost entirely of student athletes.

Severe threat downgraded to marginal

by Steve Dunford

The Storm Prediction Center has downgraded the threat for severe thunderstorms from slight (level 2) to marginal (level 1) for today.

There is a line of storms approaching the area quickly.  With these, there will be frequent lightning and some heavy downpours.

There will be widespread showers and thunderstorms in the region today, with embedded heavy downpours. Severe weather might come into play if the atmosphere becomes unstable in the late afternoon and early evening hours.  This would be if it would clear off, and we would have peeks of the sun.

The SPC was very close to issuing a Tornado Watch for the overnight hours for Southern Illinois.  They backed off after the line of storms that prompted some tornado warnings to be issued in Western and Central Missouri.

I will be monitoring updates from the SPC every few hours.  If the situation changes, I will give another update.

Below is the hazardous weather outlook from the National Weather Service in Paducah, KY

.DAY ONE…Today and Tonight Numerous thunderstorms are expected today and early tonight, and isolated thunderstorms may reach severe levels. The primary hazards will be damaging winds and large hail. Locally heavy rain will accompany some storms, with the possibility of flooding in a few locations.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN…Sunday through Friday There is a small chance of thunderstorms Tuesday and Tuesday night. The primary concern with these storms is lightning.
