Miners Stumble Against Slammers In Saturday Defeat

MARION, IL – The Southern Illinois Miners came all the way back from a five-run deficit early in the game on Saturday night at Rent One Park against the Joliet Slammers to take a 7-6 lead in the fifth inning, but could not hold it in a 9-7 loss, their second in a row to the visitors in Marion.

Joliet scored runs in each of the first four innings against Tyler Stubblefield, with Danny Zardon’s inside-the-park home run in the first making it 1-0. Two runs came across in the second inning, including a two-out single by Chase Patterson, for a 3-0 lead, and that was extended to 5-0 on two-out singles by Ridge Hoopii-Haslam and Chaz Meadows. The Miners got a run back as London Lindley doubled to lead off the bottom of the third and came home on an RBI single by Craig Massey, but the Slammers scored that run back in the top of the fourth inning on another two-out hit by Rock Shoulders to make the score 6-1.

The Miners then came all the way back in their next two turns at-bat. After Billy Germaine singled with one out in the fourth inning and Ben Moore was hit by a pitch, Culver Plant singled home a run to make it 6-2. Lindley’s groundout to shortstop plated another run to make it 6-3, and then Massey hit an infield single off the glove of Shoulders at first with two outs to make it a 6-4 ballgame heading to the fifth inning.

After a scoreless top half by the Slammers, the Miners got more two-out hitting to vault into the lead in the bottom half. Willi Martin doubled home Marc Flores home from first base with the runner in motion to make it a 6-5 ballgame. Two batters later, Moore singled Martin to third and Plant came up clutch to tie the game with a single up the middle, chasing Joliet starter Joe Ortiz. Lindley greeted Skylar Janisse (1-0) with an RBI single of his own, which gave the Miners their first lead of the contest at 7-6.

The Slammers responded, however, in the top of the sixth inning as Melvin Rodriguez hit a go-ahead, two-out, two-run homer to left to make it 8-7 Joliet. The Slammers added another run in the top of the seventh on Zardon’s RBI single for the final margin, as Southern Illinois got the tying run to the plate in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings, but could not score in the loss.

Germaine finished with three hits off the bench while Plant, Lindley, Massey and Flores all had two-hit nights. Plant and Massey added two RBIs apiece. Southern Illinois will look to avoid a sweep on Sunday at 5:05 p.m., with Corey Sessions taking the mound against the Slammers’ Shane Bryant.

The Southern Illinois Miners are the 2016 Frontier League West Division Champions, the 2014 and 2015 Frontier League East Division Champions and the 2012 Frontier League Champions. They have been awarded the Frontier League Organization of the Year award three times since their inception, and also set a new Frontier League attendance record in 2007, their inaugural season. 50 INFLUENCERS OF REND LAKE COLLEGE: TIM WILLS, ALWAYS THERE WITH THE ASSIST

Reece Rutland – Sports Information Director, Rend Lake College

INA, IL –  Every year thousands of students make the commitment to come to Rend Lake College. Out of all those students, a few get the opportunity to represent the college on Warrior athletic teams. From that pool of former athletes, a select few have returned to Ina to coach or teach. But, only one man can claim the titles of student, athlete, coach, professor and athletic director.

Tim Wills in the classroom at RLC (photo provided)

Tim Wills (RLC Class of 1984) started his journey at RLC as a two-year starter on a historic basketball team assembled by then-coach Mitch Haskins. The Benton native attended RLC on a Presidential Scholarship. As a player, Wills and his team found notable success, setting 10 school records. For its achievement, the 83-84 team was inducted into the RLC Sports Hall of Fame, Class of 2017. For his part, Wills earned All-GRAC, All-Region and “Most Dedicated” laurels.

As a Warrior, Wills put up some impressive RLC career numbers. He averaged 8.2 ppg (549 points), 44.1% FG (189-429), 81.4% FT (171-210), 112 rebounds (1.7 avg.), 443 assists (6.6) and 156 steals / recoveries (2.3).

Like many of his teammates, Wills transferred on to a four-year institution to continue his athletic career. He transitioned to Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, and led the Cougars in assists during the 1987-88 season with 127, averaging 4.5 per game, good for the 10th best single-season total in school history. He also sits at number 19 on the list of career assist leaders with 190 over his two seasons at SIUE.

It was with the Southern Illinois University system that Wills got his start in coaching, acting as an assistant at both Edwardsville and Carbondale under his two previous mentors.

He made his return to RLC in 1992 to take over head coaching responsibilities for the Warrior team he once played for and to begin a teaching career in Health and Physical Education. He also began his first stint as the college’s athletic director.

Wills acted as men’s head coach for 18 seasons (1992-2010).

His coaching highlights include his 1995-96 team that won 20 games and attained its highest national ranking at No. 5 in Division II and produced a Warrior first . . . a First-Team All-America designee in 22-year-old sophomore Bryant Lowe (Cairo). His 06-07 squad ran away to a 21-10 record and managed 8-8 in a conference monopolized by Division I opponents. The team netted three players on the All-Region XXIV D-II list.

All of this happened with Wills coming on board right after one of the most turbulent times for the program. Just the year before his arrival, the Warriors were placed on probation and dropped to Division II. An estimated two-thirds of the team’s games were played against D-I rivals with many more resources at their disposal.

In the head athletic office, Wills served from 1992-2008, stepping down for two years before returning to the role in 2010 where he remains today. He has continued to teach uninterrupted since he joined the college professionally 25 years ago.

As a first-year A.D., he was responsible for a No. 1 ranked Men’s Golf team that finished third in the NJCAA D-II Finals; a Softball squad that won its first Region XXIV crown and advanced to the National Finals; a Baseball team that was 35-14 and ranked in the Top 30, and a Women’s Basketball squad that netted GRAC “Coach of Year” honors for former assistant Ronnie Ressel.

As an educator and athletic director, Wills helped build the Learning Enhancement Center (LEC) on campus. The LEC was established to provide academic support and transition services to students. It acts as the central resource for academic help on Rend Lake College’s campus. Tutors are available to help students in core subject areas and workshops are conducted to provide transition assistance.

From an athletic standpoint, the LEC promotes success among RLC student-athletes who are required to attend study sessions there. It is a proactive tool that has helped develop skills off of the court, field and track for many Warriors. Numerous athletes and teams at the college have been designated Academic All-Americans by the National Junior College Athletic Association under Wills tenure.

This isn’t the first time Wills has been recognized for his contributions.

He was honored with the Rend Lake College “Alumnus of the Year” award in 1996 for his accomplishments, hard work and dedication to the students and athletes of RLC.

“I can’t describe the feeling,” said Wills, when he received the honor. “You don’t expect to get anything like that . . . definitely flattering. It is most gratifying, considering it is only given once a year, there are many deserving individuals who could be considered and it is coming from a college for which I have the utmost respect.”

A Williamson County plane crash survivor recalls a terrifying day.

A flight instructor explains how he survived a deadly plane crash at the Williamson County Airport.

“The Lord has done absolute miracles. It was a miracle from the very beginning.” says Todd Greiner.

One year ago Saturday, Greiner took off with student John Alleman on a fateful flight.

“People don’t appreciate what the Lord has done unless they appreciate how bad things were,” says Greiner.

On June 10, 2016, around 4:30 p.m., fight instructor Todd Greiner took off for a training flight with long-time pilot and friend, John Alleman.

The two performed what he calls an “engine out” maneuver, when he says something went wrong.

Last Tuesday, at 9:15 a.m. the staff and medical personnel at Franklin Hospital, in Benton got to test their abilities to deliver urgent medical care under one of the worst possible scenarios—a simulated F4 category tornado.

The exercise briefing read, “At 0810 this morning Du Quoin, IL was struck by an F4 category tornado. Marshall Browning Hospital in Du Quoin, sustained significant damage requiring assistance by other hospitals in treatment of injured and immediate relocation of their inpatients.”

The idea was to treat the simulation as if it were a real emergency event, complete with a real-time control room and a briefing identical to what would have been released to local radio stations, online local news sources if such a disaster were to occur.

Severin Meets with Law Enforcement and First Responders

WEST FRANKFORT, IL – Wednesday, State Representative Dave Severin (R-Benton) met with his Law Enforcement and First Responders Advisory Committee in West Frankfort. This was the first meeting for the committee, which is made up of local leaders in their respective fields. The group covered a range of issues from asset forfeiture to general suggestions on how to make working with state agencies more efficient.

“I enjoyed meeting with leaders from law enforcement and first responder communities. I received excellent feedback. I have a better understanding of the issues they face and how I can better serve them,” Severin said. “Advisory committees help me do my job better.  I look forward to meeting with this committee and others from a number of different fields.”

Fowler Week in Review: June 5 – 9

SPRINGFIELD, IL – After a long-term solution to the state’s economic competitive issues and a resolution to the two year budget impasse wasn’t produced by the General Assembly’s scheduled May 31 adjournment, State Sen. Dale Fowler (R-Harrisburg) believes achieving a final resolution now becomes even harder to achieve

Legislators returned to their districts for the summer, despite the fiscal uncertainty plaguing the state. Senator Fowler remains committed to returning to the State Capitol at a moment’s notice to vote much-needed reforms and a budget deal.

The Senator is concerned that as the clock runs down on Fiscal Year 2017, the consequences of inaction become even direr. After repeated requests by Senator Fowler and his fellow Senate Republican lawmakers, the majority party seems to have dug in even more in their opposition to reaching a budget deal with associated reforms that will help make Illinois more competitive.

Senator Fowler has held a number of meetings in his Harrisburg Office with constituents on issues ranging from coal mining to disaster recovery. On June 6, the Senator joined Representative Dave Severin for tour of the now-shuttered Bombardier boat factory. The factory ceased operations in 2012 and the factory is now being offered on the open market for future Franklin County economic development.

As most schools districts in Southern Illinois closed for the summer, impoverished students are often reliant on summer community-based lunch programs. Senator Fowler’s office took part in the opening of the Harrisburg East Side Elementary summer feeding program on June 7. The Senator thanked the non-profit organizations who are all-too-often leading providers to fill in the “gaps” for Southern Illinois Families.

Senator Fowler’s Comcast Newsmakers

The Senator recently made his debut on Comcast Newsmakers to discuss Cairo’s ongoing housing situation and his efforts to help economically rebuild the community. Senator Fowler’s appearance can be found on his Facebook “fan page” available at

Miners Rally, But Cannot Complete Comeback In Loss To Joliet

The Southern Illinois Miners returned home to Rent One Park on Friday night, and rallied from down six runs in the sixth inning to get the tying run either on base or at the plate in the sixth, seventh and ninth, but could not complete their comeback attempts in falling to the Joliet Slammers 7-4.

Neither side got any baserunners against the opposition’s starting pitcher in the first two innings, as Payton Lobdell (2-3) and Luis Cruz (1-0) were dealing early. But the Slammers broke through in the third, scoring three runs on a wild pitch, an RBI single by Juan Silva and a subsequent single by Rock Shoulders to take a 3-0 lead. The Slammers would add to that total with one run in the fifth for a 4-0 advantage, and Silva’s two-run homer made it 6-0 in the fifth.

Cruz was removed after five shutout innings with five strikeouts and two baserunners allowed, but the Miners mounted several rallies against the Slammers’ bullpen. In the sixth, Culver Plant and London Lindley singled off Daniel Concepcion, and two batters later, Nolan Earley‘s single got the Miners on the board and made it 6-1. Willi Martin then came through with a two-run single to slice the Joliet lead to 6-3. A walk to Marc Flores put the tying run at the plate, but Ryan Lashley lined into a double play to end the threat.

The next inning, Concepcion departed after Billy Germaine walked and Plant singled, and Lindley’s single off Brian McKenna loaded the bases and put the tying run on first. But McKenna struck out the next two Miners to preserve the lead. After an insurance run scored in the eighth for the visitors on a fielder’s choice by Ridge Hoopii-Haslam, Southern Illinois attempted one last comeback in the bottom of the ninth. With one out, Plant tripled and Lindley reached on an infield single. Craig Massey‘s walk loaded the bases and again brought the tying run to the plate. Earley hit a sacrifice fly to deep left field to make it 7-4, but Martin bounced out to third base to end the game.

Plant finished 3-for-4 with a triple and two runs scored in his home debut for the Miners, while Lindley also posted a 3-for-4 day at the dish. Earley and Martin drove home two runs each, but the Slammers came away with the series-opening victory.

Southern Illinois will look to even the series on Saturday night at 6:05 p.m. when Tyler Stubblefield takes the mound for the Miners against Joliet’s Joseph Ortiz, with the Miners retiring Ralph Santana’s #20 in a pregame ceremony on the field.

The unique social media-based campaign, which will center on a pack of 24 illustrated baseball cards that will come to life later this season as a weekly cartoon series on the team’s digital and social media platforms, will formally commence with a special #CardsRatPack ceremony honoring the 1982 World Series Champion and Hall of Fame Manager prior to tonight’s game.

“The #CardsRatPack campaign is designed to celebrate the White Rat and his amazing pack of players that defined one of the most extraordinary eras in Cardinals history,” said Ron Watermon, Vice-President of Communications for the St. Louis Cardinals. “We hope fans will enjoy the cartoon series and will actively engage with the team to celebrate Whitey and Whiteyball.”

While the fan engagement portion of the social media campaign commences today, the #CardsRatPack animated series will debut on Wednesday July 12th, the first of a dozen #WhiteyBall Wednesdays. Each week, for twelve weeks, the team will release two episodes via social media on Wednesdays and Fridays. In addition to the animated series, the team will release a limited number of corresponding illustrated #CardsRatPack baseball cards.

Each #CardsRatPack cartoon and baseball card is designed to convey an important part of the amazing story of the New Athens, Illinois native and the extraordinary pack of players he managed. Fans will need to stay tuned to the team’s social media to learn how they can collect the #CardsRatPack cards.

The team is encouraging fans to show their affection for the White Rat all season long by sharing video memories, photographs and other messages via social media using the hashtag #CardsRatPack.

As part of the #CardsRatPack campaign, the team is sponsoring a one-of-a-kind video contest asking fans to share their favorite Whiteyball memory for a chance to have their personal video transformed into a professionally animated cartoon that would punctuate the #CardsRatPack series.    As part of the campaign, the team is also raising money for the Whitey Herzog Youth Foundation to help them further their work to teach kids the game of baseball.

While the #CardsRatPack campaign follows the Cardinals’ social media based fan engagement tributes to Stan Musial (Stand for Stan), Mike Shannon (#LikeMike), Red Schoendienst (#LoveRed2), and Lou Brock (#StLisLou), this effort will integrate creative storytelling along the lines of the team’s prior #NestFlix fan entertainment projects on social media, as well as their #CardsFanFlix video engagement, with the intent to not only engage fans, but also entertain, educate and connect multiple generations.

To produce the #CardsRatPack illustrations and cartoons, the Cardinals are working with Lion Forge Labs, a local creative services company that specializes in storytelling using comics, graphic novels, animation and gaming.

Partnering on these videos with the St. Louis Cardinals to help honor Whitey Herzog has been a highlight for us,” said David Steward II, CEO of Lion Forge Labs. “It’s a fun, creative way to tell his story, and we are grateful to be part of the #CardsRatPack campaign team.”
