Lawmakers will be in session Saturday to take up the final pieces of what could be a $5 billion tax increase to pay for a $36.5 billion spending bill, and Republicans are lining up votes.

Following a bipartisan vote in the House to amend the Democrat’s $36.5 billion spending plan, Speaker Michael Madigan said lawmakers should expect to be in tomorrow.

“I think it’s a good step forward, a step that we can work upon. There’s much work yet to be done,” Madigan said. “Momentarily, I will send a message to the bond rating agencies asking them to defer any further opinions relative to the credit rating of the state of Illinois until we’ve had sufficient time to finalize our budget making.”

NOTE:  What passed the Illinois House around 12:30 p.m. was Amendment 2 to Senate Bill 6.  There will be an income tax increase to 4.95%, but the proposed state sales tax on services was dropped.

All Southern Illinois Legislators, Brandon Phelps (D – Norris City) and Republicans Terri Bryant of Murphysboro, and Dave Severin of Benton voted for the measure.

The House is supposed to be in session tomorrow for the final touches on the bill. -sd

Miners Fall In Walk-Off Fashion To Grizzlies

From the Southern Illinois Miners

The Southern Illinois Miners held a 2-1 lead entering the bottom of the ninth inning against the Gateway Grizzlies on Thursday night in Sauget, but could not hold it, as the home team came back and won on a walk-off base-on-balls by Dan Holst by a score of 3-2, denying the Miners a series sweep.

In the 1,000th game in Miners franchise history, Southern Illinois grabbed the lead right away, as Craig Massoni hit an RBI infield single against his former team in the top of the first with two outs to make it 1-0. Thanks to the pitching of Zach Cooper, who tied his season and career-high with eight strikeouts, the Grizzlies trailed by that score until the fifth inning, when Blake Brown’s sacrifice fly brought home Matt Hearn and tied the game at 1-1. The unearned run, with an error in the frame by the Miners, would be all that Cooper allowed in the contest in addition to five hits and three walks in six innings of work.

Meanwhile, the Miners got that run back immediately, as Hearn’s error in center field allowed Ben Moore to go to second base. After a sacrifice bunt by Kurt Wertz, Jr., Southern Illinois took a 2-1 lead on a sacrifice fly by Culver Plant to deep right. After Cooper departed, Kyle Tinius and John Lollar kept the Grizzlies at bay, with Tinius striking out the side in the seventh inning and Lollar working out of a bases-loaded jam in the eighth.

In the ninth, however, Gateway would come back against Chris DeBoo. After a lineout for the first out, back-to-back walks put the tying run in scoring position at second base. DeBoo struck out Terry McClure looking for the second out, but in the next at-bat, on a 2-2 pitch, Jack Hranec singled to tie the game at 2-2. After Chase Simmons followed with a walk to load the bases, Holst came up against Nick Palacios and drew a walk to force in the winning run.

Southern Illinois won the series against the Grizzlies to finish 5-4 on their nine-game road swing, and will next head home for a series against the Normal CornBelters over the weekend. All three games of the series will start at 7:05 p.m., and include postgame fireworks as well, with Ethan Gibbons taking the hill for the Miners against Normal in the first game on Friday night.

The Southern Illinois Miners are the 2016 Frontier League West Division Champions, the 2014 and 2015 Frontier League East Division Champions and the 2012 Frontier League Champions. They have been awarded the Frontier League Organization of the Year award three times since their inception, and also set a new Frontier League attendance record in 2007, their inaugural season. MURRAY, KY-  (Blake Stevens and Michael Bradford, WPSD-TV.  Please click on the link above for the full story and video.  Here is an excerpt below.)

An explosion in the New Richmond Hall dormitory at Murray State University on Tuesday caused commotion outside the campus as well. Kristen Farley’s job is to serve up burritos, but yesterday she had an extra task —to calm down customers.

“Honestly, I was trying to keep the commotion down, because we had customers coming in that we’re very scared. And I was trying to make light humor…trying to keep the tone light” Farley says

A university spokeswoman says that blast didn’t just cause damage to New Richmond. It also caused damage to three other residence halls: Hester, Hart and Clark, as well as the Winslow Cafeteria.

by Steve Dunford

The Storm Prediction Center upgraded all of Southern Illinois into a slight risk of severe weather.  There will be a slow moving cold front that will come through the region this evening.  There could be pop up storms in advance of the front.  As of now the main line of storms is projected to move through the region between 8-10 pm.

The zone of the slight risk of severe weather, cuts across the country from central Oklahoma all the way to Maine.

The biggest threat for the area is large damaging winds,  The hail and tornado threat is minimal, but can not be counted out.

I will keep you informed of and statements, watches and warnings.  During a severe weather threat it is impossible to keep up with the website, I will post most information on the Facebook page only.

Here is the hazardous weather outlook from the National Weather Service

.DAY ONE…Today and Tonight

There is a slight risk of severe thunderstorms along and northwest
of the Ohio River, including all of southeast Missouri. The
primary hazard will be locally damaging winds, but isolated large

southeast of the Ohio River. Heavy rainfall and frequent dangerous
lightning will accompany some storms. The primary time frame for
the strongest storms will be this afternoon and early tonight.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN…Saturday through Thursday

More thunderstorms are possible Saturday as a cold front moves
across our region. The highest chance of storms is along and
southeast of a line from Cape Girardeau Missouri to Evansville
Indiana, where a few strong to severe storms are possible in the

There is a chance of thunderstorms again from Monday through
Thursday. There may be isolated strong storms, along with locally
heavy rainfall.

.SPOTTER INFORMATION STATEMENT…

Democrat leaders disagree over whether Friday is ‘artificial’ deadline for budget deal

State Comptroller Susan Mendoza (D) discusses the budget crisis with Democratic Lawmakers

SPRINGFIELD, IL – (Greg Bishop – Illinois News Network.  Please click on the link above for this and other breaking stories involving the budget crisis in Springfield.  We will keep you updated throughout the day -sd)

Illinois is careening toward fiscal insolvency without a budget, and the state’s comptroller says taxpayers better prepare for maximum impact. Those who don’t think there will be real consequences if the state enters a third year without an approved budget are out of their minds, she said.

“If we don’t have a budget deal in place by midnight on June 30th, it is almost a guaranteed certainty, because the credit rating agencies have already said as much, they will downgrade us to junk bond territory,” Comptroller Susana Mendoza, a Democrat, said, adding that this is no false alarm.

House Deputy Majority Leader Lou Lang, D-Skokie, told Illinois News Network this week that Friday’s midnight deadline is “artificial.”

Mendoza said anyone who thinks that needs to grow up.
