The Benton Rangers starting pitcher Ian McMahon has announced his intention to play baseball at Maryville University, located in St. Louis next fall after completing his senior year with the Rangers.

McMahon made the announcement on social media earlier this week.“I am very excited to announce my commitment to Maryville University (Maryville University Baseball) to continue my athletic and academic career! I would like to thank: my family, friends, all of my teammates and my coaches who have helped me get to this point in my career!

Cubs Acquire LHP José Quintana from White Sox

Press Release from the Chicago Cubs

The Chicago Cubs today acquired left-handed pitcher José Quintana from the Chicago White Sox for outfielder Eloy Jimenez, right-handed pitcher Dylan Cease, and infielders Matt Rose and Bryant Flete. Quintana is under club control through the 2020 campaign.

Quintana, 28, was a 2016 All-Star and is 50-54 with a 3.51 ERA (412 ER/1,055.1 IP) in 172 major league appearances, all but three as a starter, over the last six seasons with the White Sox (2012-17). He has made 32 or more starts while reaching 200.0 or more innings in each of the last four campaigns.

Last season, Quintana went 13-12 with a 3.20 ERA (74 ER/208.0 IP) in 32 starts, earning his first-career All-Star nod. He set career highs in innings pitched, strikeouts and wins while limiting foes to a .246 batting average, .295 on-base percentage and .393 slugging percentage, good for a .687 OPS against. His batting average against to both sides of the plate was nearly identical, as right-handed batters hit .247 and lefthanders hit .246. Quintana received Cy Young votes at the end of the campaign and went on to pitch in the 2017 World Baseball Classic for Colombia.

Quintana has gone 4-8 with a 4.49 ERA (52 ER/104.1 IP) in 18 starts for the White Sox this season, averaging better than a strikeout per inning for the first time in his career (109 strikeouts in 104.1 innings pitched), and remains on pace for his fifth-consecutive 32-plus start, 200.0-plus inning season in his career.

The 6-foot-1, 220-pound Quintana made his big league debut in 2012 and enjoyed his first full big league campaign a year later, reaching 33 starts and 200.0 innings for the first time in his career. He won nine games in 2013, 2014 and 2015 before his first double-digit win campaign in 2016. Among qualifying pitchers starting in 2013, Quintana has received the second-lowest run support average in the American League in that span.

The Arjona, Colombia native signed a major league contract with the White Sox on November 10, 2011 after being released from previous minor league stints with the New York Mets and New York Yankees. Today’s trade gives Quintana the distinction of having been a member of the New York Mets, New York Yankees, Chicago White Sox and Chicago Cubs organizations.

Jimenez, 20, is batting .271 (42-for-155) with six doubles, eight home runs and 32 RBI in 42 games with Single-A Myrtle Beach this season. He originally signed with the Cubs as a non-drafted free agent in 2013.

Cease, 21, is 1-2 with a 2.79 ERA (16 ER/51.2 IP) in 13 starts with Single-A South Bend this season. He was originally selected by the Cubs in the sixth round of the 2014 Draft.

Rose, 22, is batting .227 (53-for-233) with 15 doubles, 14 home runs and 38 RBI in 65 games with Myrtle Beach this season. He was originally selected by the Cubs in the 11th round of the 2015 Draft.

Flete, 24, is batting .305 (84-for-275) with 15 doubles, six home runs and 37 RBI in 70 games with Myrtle Beach this season. He was originally signed by the Cubs as a non-drafted free agent in 2012.

Looking Back: Sesser took the brunt of a severe storm that went through the county one year ago today

by Steve Dunford

SESSER, IL –  I had my memories pop up on Facebook in the last few minutes  I was reminded that one year ago today, that Franklin County had a severe thunderstorm roll through that afternoon.

The brunt of the damage was in the Sesser Area.  I had several pictures of wind damage.  The picture is of d downed  tree in Jim and Carleen Roberts yard on the north side of the city.  It also shows pieces of their smashed produce stand .  Hopefully, I will be writing a story about their endeavors some time next week.

The posts from that afternoon came from my high school sports blog, Franklin County Hoops and Gridiron.  Since it is a dedicated group, I began to share emergency information on that site.

I was in frequent contact with Sesser Mayor Jason Ashmore that afternoon.  Not only Sesser, but most of the west side of the county experienced damage.  Valier was hit pretty hard as well.

Ameren-Illinois reported over 4,000 customers throughout power.  There was a brief power outage in West Frankfort, as 70 mph winds were clocked just to the west of town.

Benton, Thompsonville, as well as the rest of the east side of the county experienced little damage, as the cell began to weaken.

With a very small chance of severe weather today, pray we do not have a repeat.

When a small group from Benton staged “Godspell” in 1977, they had no idea that a tradition was born that would continue for the next 40 years.

“We took what we loved to do and just ran with it,” says Brian Summers, one of the group that became Pyramid Players.

In its 40-year run, the group has produced an astonishing number of kids who have gone on to making a living in the entertainment industry. That group includes performers, teachers and technical crew.

Sesser (population 2,128) is located in northwestern Franklin County in the southern portion of Illinois.  The Illinois State Routes of 154 and 148 intersect in Sesser.  A landmark near Sesser is Rend Lake located 3 miles to the east.  The At & St Railroad also has two lines that form a “T” in Sesser.  Two towns of note near Sesser are Du Quoin (10 miles southwest) and Benton (10 miles southeast).

More information is being sought regarding the history of Sesser and its school system.   It is thought that Sesser began its school system in the late 1800s.  It continued its educational excellence through many decades. Sesser Goode-Barren Township High School was probably established in the late 1800s. It was in the late 1950s and early 1960s that consolidation talks with nearby Valier (also on this site) began.  In 1963 the high schools of Valier and Sesser consolidated to form the Sesser – Valier School system.  This school still runs strong today, successful on many different levels.
The original Sesser High School building no longer stands. Sesser – Valier High School is located in Sesser. The original gymnasium is still part of the downtown Sesser landscape however.  If you have any information regarding Sesser High School please write to us at eganann@sbcglobal.net

Bost Backs Bills to Fight Human Trafficking

by George O’Connor – Communications Director for Congressman Mike Bost

Washington, DC – U.S. Representative Mike Bost (R-Murphysboro) joined a bipartisan coalition in Congress to pass a trio of bills cracking down on human trafficking and implementing a stronger detection system nationwide.

“It should anger each and every one of us that Illinois ranks in the top 10 states for reported cases of human trafficking,” said Bost. “When Boko Haram kidnapped 200 teenage girls in Nigeria in 2014, human trafficking became a hashtag and garnered attention from countries around the world. But we’re wrong to assume that this modern-day form of slavery is an isolated tragedy in some faraway nation. Reported cases of trafficking continue to rise in Illinois. Our work is far from over, but these bills are vitally important to help protect American families.”

Background:

  • There are over 20 million people enslaved around the world but few of them are ever identified as human trafficking victims.
  • The International Labour Organization reports that three out of every 1,000 people are “trapped in jobs into which they were coerced or deceived.”
  • Illinois ranks 9th in cases reported in 2016.
  • In 2016, the National Human Trafficking Hotline has received 26,727 calls, and 7,572 human trafficking cases reported.
  • This multi-billion-dollar illicit industry helps fund international criminal networks and even terrorist groups, threatening U.S. national security and international stability.

WEST FRANKFORT, IL (Tim Hastings, West Frankfort Gazette.  Please click on the link for the full story.  Here is an excerpt below. Photo contributed to the Gazette.)

The new superintendent of Frankfort Community Unit School District 168 said Thursday he is looking “rapidly and deliberately” at finances, personnel, curriculum, and procedures in order to give students the opportunities and resources to succeed and be good citizens.

Matt Donkin, who became superintendent on July 1, said he will be asking staff to define what it is they do; explain how they do it; examine whether the procedure is working, and to suggest ways it could be improved.

“I told the principals and the administrative office staff on the first day that I’m going to be asking four questions repeatedly,” Donkin said.  “These are: ‘What is it?’; ‘How are we doing it?’; ‘Does it work?’; and ‘Could it be done better?’”

Triple digit heat index -marginal risk for severe weather this evening

by Steve Dunford

The National Weather service issued a special weather statement in regards to the heat this afternoon.  Heat indexes are to be between 100-105.

There is a marginal risk (level one of five) for severe weather for this afternoon into the overnight hours for Franklin County and most of Southern Illinois.  As you can see from the graphic to the left,  There are a few counties in Southern Illinois that are on the edge of a slight risk (level 2 of severe weather).

The Storm Prediction Center is in discussions of changing the term slight risk to an elevated risk.  Some meteorologists in this market already use that term.

This is what I expect.  The cloud cover should be lifting at any time.  In the late afternoon hours, you could see one or two pop up storms that could turn severe.

This is in advance of an approaching cold front.  There should be a line of storms that will move through the area from northwest to southeast.  The best time for them to reach Franklin County is between 10 and 11 p.m.  There is the possibility of one or two severe thunderstorm warnings being issued during this time.

The main threat is damaging winds, with large hail being secondary.  The tornado threat is near zero.

Please follow the website and especially the Facebook page for any watches or warnings.  Below is the Special Weather Statement involving the heat and the hazardous weather outlook.  At the end is the seven day forecast, which I will post daily from this point on.   The forecast will pinpoint on Franklin County.

If you are going north or west toward the St. Louis Metro area, there is a heat advisory for heat indices running from 105-110

JOLIET, Ill. – A 2 for 4, 2 RBI performance by Washington Wild Things, Bralin Jackson led the East to a 4-1 victory over the West on Wednesday night at the 2017 Frontier League All-Star game, hosted by the Joliet Slammers.

In the top of the third, the West threatened scoring first by Josh Allen (EVN) tripling before Jose Brizuela (FLO) grounded out to keep the game scoreless.

Rashad Brown (WSH) legged out an infield single. Seth Spivey (SCH) advanced on an error by West second baseman Josh Allen (EVN). A ball in the dirt gave Spivey the chance and registered a stolen base. That chance ended as Bralin Jackson (WSH) struck out swinging.

The East scored first when Kane Sweeney (WSH) doubled to right center. Player of the Week Will Kengor (TC) then smacked a double to right center scoring Sweeney from second. Next, Kyle Pollock (WSH) walked and moved to third following a single by Rashad Brown (WSH), then scoring Kengor.

To lead off the West in the top of the 5th, John Schultz (EVN) doubled, followed by a single by Santiago Chirino (NOR), moving Schultz to third. The West was held scoreless for the rest of the game.

The West would not go down with a fighting chance when they were knocking on the door in the bottom of the 8th. Zach Strecker (WSH) to give up singles to Jordan Brower and Blake Brown before popping out Segovia.

The win on the night belonged to Jordan Kurokawa and Brian Loconsole raked the save.
