Miners Fall To Wild Things In Series Finale

From the Southern Illinois Miners

The Southern Illinois Miners got three runs in the bottom of the third inning to rally back from a 4-0 deficit and make it 4-3 on a home run by Nolan Earley, but the Washington Wild Things scored four times in the top of the fifth inning to break the game open in a 10-6 loss at Rent One Park on Thursday night to take the series two games to one.

In the second inning, Mike Hill hit a solo home run off of Chris Washington to make the score 1-0 Wild Things, and in the top of the third inning, the Wild Things would get back-to-back home runs by Bralin Jackson and Hector Roa to push the advantage out to 4-0 before Southern Illinois mounted a comeback. Brett Wiley singled leading off the bottom of the third and went to third base on an errant pickoff throw by Cameron Stanton (2-2) before Ryan Lashley drove him in on an RBI single to make it 4-1 Washington. Two batters later, with one on base, Earley launched a deep, two-run homer to right field to pull the Miners within one run at 4-3.

But after a scoreless fourth inning, the Wild Things took advantage of a key error in the top of the fifth and ended up scoring four unearned runs in the frame on RBI hits by Kenny Peoples-Walls, Justin Bohn and John Fidanza, with Bohn’s two-run triple representing the big blow of the inning as Washington took an 8-3 advantage. Austin Dubsky took over for Washington (1-2) in the sixth inning and would end up finishing the game, permitting two runs in the eighth inning that made the score 10-3, but also striking out four over four innings of work.

The Miners would rally in the late innings against reliever Aaron Burns for three runs, including an RBI single by Romeo Cortina capping a three-hit night in the bottom of the eighth and an RBI single by Earley in the ninth, but could not get closer than four runs in suffering the loss. Wiley and Cortina each had three hits in the game, with Earley and Lashley combining for four hits and four RBIs offensively for Southern Illinois.

The Miners next head to Joliet to begin a series with the Slammers on Friday night at 7:05 p.m. Zach Cooper will pitch in the series opener for Southern Illinois.

The Southern Illinois Miners are the 2016 Frontier League West Division Champions, the 2014 and 2015 Frontier League East Division Champions and the 2012 Frontier League Champions. They have been awarded the Frontier League Organization of the Year award three times since their inception, and also set a new Frontier League attendance record in 2007, their inaugural season. US to ban Americans from traveling to North Korea

WASHINGTON, DC – (Matthew Lee, Associated Press.  Please click on the link above for the full story.  Here is an excerpt below.)

U.S. officials say the Trump administration will ban American citizens from traveling to North Korea following the death of university student Otto Warmbier who passed away after falling into a coma into a North Korean prison.

The officials said Friday that Secretary of State Rex Tillerson had decided to impose “geographic travel restriction” for North Korea, which would make the use of U.S. passports to enter the country illegal. They said the restriction would go into effect 30 days after a notice is published in the Federal Register, but it was not immediately clear when that would be. There was no announcement in Friday’s editions of the government publication. The officials were not authorized to publicly discuss the decision before it is announced and spoke on condition of anonymity.

Two tour operators that organize group trips to North Korea said they had already been informed of the decision.

TFBC youth give their testimony after returning from World Changers

THOMPSONVILLE, IL –  To top off the day of the first Sunday of their renovated sanctuary, the youth group of Thompsonville First Baptist Church shared their experiences of going on their annual World Changers trip.  They went to Huntington, WV this year.

Huntington is the home to Marshall University.  The town is known for having high drug use.  The city leads the nation in drug overdoses per capita.

The week got off to a sad note, as Youth Director Renee Anderson lost her mother-in-law.  Other than one kid getting sick, the rest of the week was event free.

Most of the group was assigned to build wheelchair ramps for the elderly of the city.  The crews were able to interact with the homeowners and share the Gospel with them.

One thing that was impressive was they had some free time on Wednesday.  The group chose to help out in a block party sponsored by the city of Hunnington.  One man was led to the Lord at the block party by some TFBC youth.

Emma Dixon sharing a passage of scripture and Bailey Clem will lead in prayer at The Gathering, which is a worship service at the end of each day at World Changers

I had each student listed.  I am afraid I would miss some details.  Of the group there were three high schools represented.  There were athletes, cheerleaders, one young man for his stance at his graduation, was on Fox News.

The adult leaders stressed the boldness of the youth in sharing the Gospel.

Every kid that spoke had a zeal and love for the Lord.  The group will be going to Puerto Rico.

This group needs to be commended for taking the Great Commission to another part of the nation.

Zeigler High School “Purple Tornadoes”

ZEIGLER, IL  –  (Illinois High School Glory Days.  Please click on the link above. Here is an excerpt below.)

The School system in Zeigler is documented at http://www.zeigleril.com/pages/schools.htm.  Zeigler began a school system soon after its first houses were built.  As Zeigler grew and prospered so did the educational facilities.  The first school house was the “Block School”,  In the 1920s the school pictured abovewas built.  This served the children until the 1960s when the building was demolished and a new building was erected.  The grade school pictured below was used for the high school for a bout three years until the new building was finished.
The year was 1962 when the towns of Zeigler and Royalton agreed to consolidate
their efforts.  The Zeigler-Royalton School District was established ending the solo efforts of the two towns.  If you would like to add any information regarding Zeigler High School please e-mail us at eganann@sbcglobal.net

For the first time in most people’s lives, there will soon be a total eclipse of the sun, and you don’t want to miss it. It’s been nearly 100 years since the last one, and the next won’t happen for another seven years.
There are various places across the United States to view this incredible phenomenon. From Portland, Oregon to Charleston, South Carolina, the line of sight for the eclipse cuts diagonally across the states with part crossing through the southern portion of Illinois. Check it out:

NOTE:  I will start ramping up the eclipse coverage as it gets closer to the date.  There are some links you can click from after getting to the onlyinyourstate.com website.
