Pitcher Mike Leake dealt to Seattle for shortstop Rayder Ascanio

Press Release from the St. Louis Cardinals

ST. LOUIS, MO –  The St. Louis Cardinals announced today that they have acquired minor league shortstop Rayder Ascanio from the Seattle Mariners in exchange for right-handed pitcher Mike Leake and international cap space totaling $750,000 for the current international signing period.

Ascanio, 21, was signed by the Mariners as an international free agent in 2012 at age 16 and the slick fielding infielder has compiled a career batting mark of .240 with 15 HR’s and 158 RBI in 425 games at the minor league level.

The switch-hitting Ascanio, a native of Mariara, Venezuela, was batting .217 with 9 HR’s and 44 RBI in 111 games this season between Tacoma (AAA), Clinton (A) and Modesto (A). He is expected to be assigned to the Palm Beach Cardinals (A) roster.
Today’s trade will require an addition to the Cardinals 25-man active roster. That transaction is expected to be announced tomorrow.

Leake, 29, was 7-12 with a 4.21 ERA in 26 starts for the Cardinals this season and has a career mark of 80- 76, 4.02 ERA in eight seasons with Cincinnati (2010-15), San Francisco (2015) and St. Louis (2016-17). He went 16-24 with a 4.46 ERA in his 56 starts for the Cardinals after signing as a free agent in December of 2015.

The Cardinals and Mariners announced a trade last month that sent power-hitting outfielder Tyler O’Neill (28 HR’s in 2017) to the Cardinals organization in exchange for left-handed pitcher Marco Gonzales.

The “war chant” music, a fixture at Illini games that also drew criticism for stereotyping Native Americans, will no longer be played during University of Illinois sporting events.

UI athletics spokesman Kent Brown confirmed the decision Friday after several UI students said they were told to stop playing the chant at Thursday’s Illini soccer match by a representative of the Division of Intercollegiate Athletics.

“Midway through the first period, a DIA rep came over to tell us it was no longer allowed,” said Sam LeRoy, a member of the Illini Pride’s “Hotshots” soccer fan support group. He said they were playing the drum during a corner kick, as they had many times before.

CHESTER, IL-  Gilster-Mary Lee Corp. registered a slight decrease in revenue in 2016 because strong competition forced its prices down, said Chairman, President and CEO Donald Welge.

Last year, the firm, which is majority owned by the Welge family and an employee profit sharing plan, experienced “a very continued competitive marketplace in food manufacturing,” Welge said.

The company, based in Chester, Illinois, makes private-label baking mixes, macaroni and cheese, ready-to-eat breakfast cereals, microwave popcorn, dehydrated potato products and hot cocoa mixes.

NOTE: There are a lot of people that work there from Franklin County, especially on the west side of the county.  I spent 18 months, there in the 90’s in the Steeleville Pasta Plant.  I found employment closer to home.

Miners Stumble In Series Opener Against Grizzlies

From the Southern Illinois Miners

MARION, IL –  The Southern Illinois Miners fell behind the Gateway Grizzlies early in the opener of their midweek series at Rent One Park, then scored two in the ninth inning to get the tying run to the plate, but fell 6-3 on Tuesday night.

Gateway opened the scoring in the second inning on a two-run home run by Evan Rogers to make it 2-0, then doubled that lead two innings later on another two-run shot by Rogers for a 4-0 advantage. The Miners then got on the board with three hits in the bottom of the fourth inning, including an RBI single by Craig Massey, to get within 4-1.

That would be the only run the Miners got off of Gateway starter Vincent Molesky (7-7), who scattered five hits allowed across eight innings of work with one walk and four strikeouts. In the process, with two outs in the top of the eighth inning against Austin Dubsky, the Miners caught a bad break when with runners at second and third base, a slow ground ball by Chase Simmons down the third base line hit the base itself and caromed down the line, scoring both runners to make the score 6-1 as the Grizzlies added insurance.

In the ninth, after Molesky departed, the Miners mounted a comeback attempt against Michael Elwood when Nolan Earley walked and Ryan Lashley singled. Massey then hit another RBI single, his second of the game, to make the score 6-2 with no one out. After a strikeout, Anthony Critelli singled to right field to score Lashley and get the Miners within 6-3, bringing the tying run to the plate. But Elwood recorded a strikeout and a flyout to get out of trouble and end the contest.

Southern Illinois will look to even the series on Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m., with Matt Parish on the mound against the Grizzlies’ Will Anderson.

The Southern Illinois Miners are the 2016 Frontier League West Division Champions, the 2014 and 2015 Frontier League East Division Champions and the 2012 Frontier League Champions. They have been awarded the Frontier League Organization of the Year award three times since their inception, and also set a new Frontier League attendance record in 2007, their inaugural season. University will host ‘Fresh Check Day’ to promote student mental health

From Chirsti Mathis – SIUC News Services

CARBONDALE, IL – With fun activities and a supportive atmosphere, Southern Illinois University Carbondale’s Fresh Check Day will serve as an uplifting way of promoting awareness and discussions about mental health and suicide prevention.

Fresh Check Day is set for 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sept. 8 on the Morris Library lawn. Numerous campus departments and groups are collaborating for the interactive event which will feature giveaways, free food, special entertainment, peer-to-peer discussions, expo booths and information about available resources.

“This is a great way for students to get connected and have fun,” said Beth Morrison, wellness coordinator. “We want to create an approachable atmosphere where students are encouraged to engage in dialogue about mental health. We also want to build bridges between them and the many mental health resources available.”

SIU is sponsoring its inaugural Fresh Check Day thanks to the “Salukis on Your Side” Garrett Lee Smith Campus Suicide Prevention Grant and the Jordan Porco Foundation. The Jordan Porco Foundation is a non-profit organization created by Ernie and Marisa Porco in honor of their son, Jordan, who died by suicide when he was a college freshman. The foundation seeks to promote mental health and prevent suicide, striving to reduce the stigma of seeking help and giving young adults a message of hope and support. Similar events are slated at dozens of schools across the country.

In the event of rain, SIU’s Fresh Check Day will be in the Student Recreation Center’s Alumni Lounge. Visit www.freshcheckday.com/SIUC to learn more
