Teams that will be going south in 3A

by Steve Dunford

I have made a lot of chicken scratches over the last few days trying to figure out who is in let alone where.  That will come to pass in the next few hours.

With West Frankfort and Harrisburg being upset last night,  created a lot of shifts in the playoff map.

I just talked to Kyle Peach, the voice of the Mt. Carmel Golden Aces, as well at the voice of the Evansville Purple Aces on ESPN- 3.  Mt. Carmel was already out.  The playoffs started in Indiana last night.  I was wondering what the formula was since they play in the Big 8, and all Indiana conference.

For future reference, Mt. Carmel gets playoff points one week before the season starts, as they start a week earlier in the Hoosier State.

There will be a lot riding on the Vienna-Goreville vs. Carmi White County game this afternoon.  If the Eagles win, it could mean another Southern Illinois team in.  They are also riding the fence as being the largest 3A school with a 548 football enrollment.  If they win they might be 4A.  However, with the number crunching I feel they will be 3A.

It will be known tonight where the SVWW Devils will be placed. (Red Devil Booster Club Photo)

With the S-V-W-W Red Devils definitely in,  I went down and broke down 3A.  The teams listed use the I-72 corridor as the dividing line.  There could be teams sent south, that could be around I-74, with a 309 zip code.

The following are the teams that I feel that are definitely in the southern bracket in 3A.  There are 14.  If V-G wins today it will be 15.

In a Black Diamond note, it looks like Chester will be bumped to 2A.

The list will be by seed, record, playoff points, conference they play in, last night’s game, and a few comments.

1.  Fairfield– (9-0) 36 points, Black Diamond, Defeated Sesser-Valier-Waltonville-Woodlawn 18-6.  The Mules are a classic Justin Townsend coached team.  They pound it on the ground and hit very hard.  It would awesome to see them and A-J meet in the semi finals

2.  Anna-Jonesboro (9-0) 31 points, Southern Illinois River to River, Mississippi Division, Defeated Benton 62-28.  The explosiveness of Hart and Turner has been well documented throughout this season.

3.  Decatur St. Teresa (8-1) 43 points, Central Illinois Conference, Defeated Shelbyville 28-20.  The Bulldogs have played a basically 1A schedule.  I don’t know much about the area, but it could be a soft high seed.

4.  Sesser-Valier-Waltonville-Woodlawn (8-1) 37 points, Black Diamond, Lost to Fairfield 18-6.  There will be a game at Carroll Kelly Field next Satudray.  Who?  We will know in a few hours.

4.   Carlinville (8-1) 37 points, South Central.  Lost to Greenville 35-28.  The South Central is a conference that runs the I-55 corridor between St. Louis and Springfield.  The conference will be well represented in 2A.

6.  Newton (8-1) 35 points, Little Illini.  Beat Jeremy Clodfelter’s Paris Tigers, 45-35.  The Little Illini was a closed conference until Edwards County joined the Black Diamond.  It is a 1A to a 4A conference.

7.  Alton Marquette (8-1) 33 points, Prairie State.  Defeated Kinkaid South Fork 42-0  The Prairie State is a 2A-3A conference that follows the same corridor of the South Central.

8.  Greenville (7-2) 38 points, South Central, Defeated Carlinville 35-28.  The Comets have been a perennial powerhouse across the South Central Illinois region for years.

9.  DuQuoin (7-2) 35 points, Southern Illinios River-to-River, Mississippi Division.  Defeated Muprhysboro, 41-21.  The Indians have been bumped up to 3A in the last couple of outlooks by the IHSA.  There still could be a small chance they make the 14 mile trip to Sesser.

10 East Alton-Wood River (7-2) 34 points,  Prairie State.  Defeated Bunker Hill 32-14.  There will be a lot of 7-2 teams that will be on the road during Week 1.  They could also be a potential first round opponent for the Devils.

11.  Marshall (6-3) 39 points, Little Illini.  Defeated Lawrenceville 53-6.  Marshall, near Terre Haute, IN is one of those teams that are always in the playoffs.  They could go north, but I do not see it.

11.  Hillsboro (6-3)  39 Points.  South Central.  Defeated Litchfield 48-0.  This time of year, it seems like Hillsboro either comes south or someone heads up there to face them.

11.  Vandalia (6-3) 39 Points.  South Central.  Lost in a basketball game to Pana. 63-55.  It seems like it is going to be the the South Central Conference Tournament.  Even though I am showing them even, the Vandals get the tie breaker defeating Hillsboro in Week 12.

11.  Pleasant Plains  (6-3)  Sangamo, Defeated Petersburg PORTA 42-12.  This is a Springfield area conference.  I definitely see them going south.

On the bubble between North and South.  I believe there will be one 8-1 team that will be in the 3A bracket down here.  If Tolono Unity is 4A, the IHSA will send Monticello this way.  If both are 3A there will be one of the teams sent this way.  Prairie Central 5-4 could be sent out of this conference.  Beardstown 7-2 could also be sent.

We will all know at 8:00 p.m.

West Frankfort…Zeigler firefighters responding to field fire

by Steve Dunford

ZEIGLER, IL –  At 11:20 a.m., Zeigler and West Frankfort firefighters responded to a field fire at the intersection of State Route 149 and Dry Road.  This is just east of the Zeigler city limits.

Further updates will be provided as they become available.

Buckner Fire-Rescue hosting several activities on Halloween Night

BUCKNER, IL- This year at Halloween the Buckner Fire Department will once again have its doors open for our area trick or treaters, on Halloween night from 5:00 until 9:00pm. We will have candy and fire prevention materials to hand out for the kids. We will also be grilling out and having free hot dogs, chips, and drinks. Kids will have the chance to participate in “Touch a Truck” where they will be allowed to explore in one of our fire engines!

And finally we will be having our first annual “Its the Great Pumpkin Buckner Fire” pumpkin decorating contest. All kids 18 and under will have the oppourtunity to bring in a painted and or carved pumpkin to be judged by very distinguished panel of pumpkin experts, and have the chance to win a sweet prize package! One boy and one girl will win a certificate with the oppourtunity to get a chauffeured ride to school in one of our engines! Talk about making your friends jealous!!!
We are also pleased to announce, that this year we will be participating in the “Teal Pumpkin Project.”

The Teal Pumpkin project is a simple way to identify to parents and their children, that we will have non-allergen candy and prizes available for children with food allergies. The department will have teal pumpkins on display to identify our trick or treat spot as a “safe” place to get safe treats and prizes.

Food allergies are a life-altering and potentially life-threatening disease, and a growing public health issue. In the U.S., one in 13 children has a food allergy – that’s roughly two in every classroom. For these children, even a tiny amount of their allergen has the potential to cause a severe reaction.

Virtually any food can cause a reaction. Many popular Halloween candies contain nuts, milk, egg, soy or wheat, which are some of the most common allergens in children and adults. Additionally, many miniature or fun-size versions of candy items contain different ingredients than their full-size counterparts and some miniature candy items may not have labels, so it is difficult for parents to determine whether these items are safe for their child with food allergies.

Non-food treats provide a safe, fun alternative for children with food allergies and other conditions for whom candy may present a problem.

There are many kids that don’t get to experience the fun of Trick or treating due to this illness.

We care about all the kids in all communities. They are our future.

The cool thing is…. you, the person reading this… can participate as well.

The 2015 Freightliner was in the center of the three lanes. The Chevrolet was in the right lane of the three. The Kenworth was in the center lane and it’s driver failed to perceive the stopped traffic in time. He swerved to the right avoid striking the rear of the 2015 Freightliner and struck the rear of the Chevrolet. The hood of the Kenworth, which sustained heavy damage in the collision, flew upward blocking the Kenworth’s driver’s view. Disoriented, he then swerved left and struck the right front corner of the 2015 Freightliner. After passing the 2015 Freightliner, the Kenworth continued on, collecting the Nissan, Honda, Jeep, 2016 Freightliner and Pontiac in a chain reaction style crash as it proceeded down the lane marker between the center and right lanes.

Severin Meets with Advisory Committee on Tourism

Marion, IL – State Representative Dave Severin (R-Benton) met with members of his Tourism advisory committee on Thursday to discuss some of the biggest issues facing local tourism.

Among the issues discussed were the plans for reopening both Rend Lake Resort and the Tourism Information Center which has been closed down due to construction on the north and south bound rest stops on I-57.

“It has been frustrating having both the Rend Lake Resort, and the Tourism Information Centers closed for as long as they have,” Severin said. “That being said we are working closely with state agencies on both of these issues and keeping an open dialogue with the committee and others involved in tourism that have been impacted by the closures.”

Shannon Johnson, CEO of visitSI, heads up the advisory committee and has enjoyed the improved communication the committee has helped provide for tourism throughout the district.

“Southern Illinois as a whole has so much to offer as a tourist destination,” Shannon said. “We have to be using all our resources though and make sure they are complimenting each other. I think the committee has done a good job of opening lines of communication between groups that otherwise would not be working together as they are now.”

The group meets on a quarterly basis with the most recent meeting held at Walkers Bluff. Their next meeting will be in January.

West Frankfort will not make the playoffs, Benton has a very slim chance of getting in

by Steve Dunford

I was holding the antenna out the window to pick up WFRX in the last few minutes of the game tonight.  I was heartbroken.  I might get ran out of West Frankfort for saying this, I am,  heartbroken for whom the late Bruce A. Fasol used to refer to as, the team six miles to the north.”

The Redbirds picked up playoff points from Nashville, A-J, and Herrin, which has them at 33.  It was known they had to pick up a win to get in.

The Rangers are sitting at 36 points.  They picked up three points as well from Carterville, Herrin, and AJ.  They needed a lot of help.  I was looking good in the “early returns.”   Murphy was hanging around with DuQuoin.  Harrisburg was beating Carbondale, and the Redbirds lost a heart-breaker.

Of all places, it was looking possible that both Benton and WF might get a point from Pinckneyville.  The Panthers were tied with Carlyle at halftime.

One win between Pinckneyville and Sparta really hurt both the Redbirds and the Rangers getting at large bids at 5-4.

I will be writing two stories in the morning.  I will be writing a season in review for the Redbirds, as well as the C-Z-R Bearcats.

I will also be writing an extensive breakdown for what could take place around 8:00 p.m. when the playoff parings are announced.  I will mainly focus on Class 3A.  There is one team that is for sure alive, the S-V-W-W Red Devils, who suffered their first loss tonight to the Fairfield Mules.

For what was supposed to be a rebuilding year in West Frankfort, the Redbirds were 15 seconds away from making the playoffs.  Even though the results were not what we wanted tonight, it is a great day to be a Redbird.

The next 26 hours: My second favorite time of the High School season

by Steve Dunford

I am giddy like a kid on Christmas morning.  I am downing an unhealthy supper (a $.99 cent Totino’s pizza) with several electronic devices ready to go.  On top of that, I will be listening to two maybe three radios tonight.

One upon a time in the two class system in high school basketball, there was not a greater moment than during the Class A Sectional and a team smelling victory, with the crowd chanting ….SIU…..SIU.  The team that came out of the Supersectional that following Tuesday night would become our team, the team representing us in Southern Illinois in Champaign and later Peoria.

When the State Tournament was in Champaign I had the priveldge of going five years straight.  The first year was in 1988, my” friend Travis Clem and I took our “college day” to visit the U of I campus.  The only building we made it to was the Assembly Hall (Now the State Farm center.  I had the privilege to watch my distant cousin, Dick Corn coach his Pinckneyville Panthers in a state title game, losing a heart breaker to Pana.

The last state tournament I made it to was special as well.  I was able to witness a Franklin County team the Benton Rangers take home a third place trophy.

I remember there was a wreck on 57 on the way up.  (Some things never change.)  I did not have time to make it to my Brothers.  My buddies and I pull up at the McDonald’s on Route 45 right before you turn to go to the Assembly Hall.  The first thing I see was Kenny Irvin shaved bald with Jo Jo Liquid Papered on his head.  We walk in and everyone in the place was from “down home.”

I received my first taste of playoff football during the 2009 season.  I became a Sesser-Valier Red Devil during that stage in my life.  They just recently added the second W as they started co-oping with Woodlawn.

The Fairfield Train Yard, the site of the SVWW Devils playing the Mules tonight. Both are 8-0. (Randy Olson areasports.net photo)

Tonight is deja vu.  I can tell you where I was eight years ago tonight.  We did not make it to the Train Yard and the Devils were finishing an undefeated season.  Kendell Gibson hit either Bronson or Dawson Verhines in the end zone for a two point conversion that night.

I could not get WFIW in my driveway, because TAO was bleeding over.  I remember sitting at the North Sandusky Boat Ramp listening to it on the radio, “tailgating” with my wife or son.

When the Devils put the exclamation point on an undefeated  season, I remember listening to the late Stan David moaning on the radio, saying “that sucked, that really sucked.”

I remember the next Saturday watching a first round playoff game from Carroll Kelly field.  It seemed like three years in a row, the Devils drew Nashville in the first round.  The older you get years run together.  I know the following year they went to Nashville.

Fast forward a few months later and the Devils and Cardinals were facing each other on the hard wood in the Salem Class 1A Super-sectional.  Four class basketball was in its infancy.  The SIU Arena was undergoing renovations.

It was possibly a once in a lifetime experience.  I was able to see what became my town and my team make a State Tournament run.  I became very sick during on the way home from the Sectional Finals.  I ended up in the ER at Franklin Hospital.

I had money put back to go to Peoria, but I missed a week of work, and was unable to make the trip.  I remember on that cold March night listing to Jim Muir and either Danny Czerwinski or Tom Wheeler.  When the Devils pulled out the barnbuner, I had a “Shooter” moment.

A few days later, I had the chance to watch my team, and the only Franklin County team play in a State Championship in my lifetime.  There were also two Southern Illinois teams playing in the State Championship that day, as the Massac County Patriots

I have traded in my maroon hoodie for a red and grey one now.  The West Frankfort Redbirds are fighting to stay alive in the playoffs tonight travelling to Nashville. If they win they are in.  If they lose, time to start basketball and wrestling.  Kevin Toney is supposed to be “retired” but he has been spending a lot of time here lately in his office at Max Morris Gym.

Technology has grown dramatically over the last few years.  I will be keeping track of multiple games across Southern Illinois.  As I will, I will be saying Go Devils, Go Redbirds, and yes Go Rangers!!!!!!

What is my favorite night now?  It is 1A/2A regional final night.  Since I went to a high school of 95 kids, I love four class basketball.

The Crab Orchard’s, Carrier Mills’, Meridian’s, Christopher’s, Gallatin County’s, Goreville’sand especially Sesser-Valier and Woodlawn  experienced deep post season runs which they would not possibly had the opportunity in four class basketball.

I have a kinship to all six high schools in the county.  The Thompsonville Tigers trump everyone.  I would say the early favorites to go to Peoria from our area is Goreville in Webber Township in 1A.  I like the Harrisburg Bulldogs in 2A right now.  I would love to see the Benton Five make a deep postseason run in 3A.

It is going to be two or three special years coming up in T’ville.  The program has only played in one regional championship, losing a heart-breaker to their nemesis every time they have a good team, the West Frankfort Redbirds.

I might have the chance to see the Tigers cut down regional championship nets.

Thank you for rolling down memory lane with me tonight.  The older I get, I am evolving into a cry baby.  I wiped a lot of tears writing this.
