Franklin County boys basketball preview 12/13/16

Steve Dunford-Franklin County Hoops and Gridiron

There are three boys’ games on tap this evening for the county teams.  The Benton Rangers host the Carmi-White County Bulldogs; (both teams are undefeated) the Christopher Bearcats host the Waltonville Spartans; and the Sesser-Valier Red Devils travel to Johnston City.  It is safe to say this is the best docket of games for the regular season.

Carmi-White County (6-0 ) at Benton (6-0)

 carmi-white-countybenton-rangers

The Bulldogs have been survivors in most of their games.  Benton had their first barn burner down at Herrin Friday night.  It has been well documented the heroics of Timmy Henson at the end of the game.

I see a little match-up problems possibly inside for the Rangers tonight.  However, the Rangers are what everyone expected coming into this year.  This is the first of three games this week for the Rangers in the newly renovated Rich Herrin gym.

After being road warriors, the Rangers will be pumped to be home in their new digs.  I am going Rangers by seven.

Waltonville (3-2) at Christopher (2-2)

waltonville-spartansThe Spartans were expected by most to cutchristopher-bearcats down the nets in the Christopher Turkey Tournament.  Instead they were defeated by Wayne City and Webber Township to take home fourth place.

Bradley Young is long overdue for the Bearcats.  I feel for the opponent when he lights it up for 30+ one night.  Jared Curry has been playing exceptionally well.  I wonder if Kaleab Pedigo and his running mate from last year, Isaac McPhail will guard each other.

This was penciled in by most prognosticators (I don’t know if I qualify for that or not) to be the championship game of the Turkey Tournament.  The Bearcats would have come in the underdogs into the championship game.  I have to go with Christopher by three in a dandy tonight.

Sesser-Valier (2-4) at Johnston City (3-4)

pitchforkThe Indians has fallen off the face of the johnston-city-indiansearth.  When they were off to a 3-0 start I was seeing a possible number one seed at the Sesser-Valier Holiday Tournament.  They now have a number eight seed.

I can see SIU football bound Max Edwards causing problems on the board for the Devils.  When I watched some video from Goreville, it seemed like JC lived and died by the three.  I don’t know what happened in their two blowout losses, but it seems like the home run ball is gone.

After S-V defeated Chester at home, their stock is on the rise.  It is a bearish market for the Indians.  I am going with Red Devils by five.

West Frankfort falls to Salem 55-45

The FCHS Redbirds boys Varsity and JV basketball teams split with the Salem Wildcats at home Saturday. In the varsity game, a very good Salem team came out on top 55-45. For the second straight game West Frankfort got off to a slow start as they fell behind 11-4

after one quarter. Salem led 24-15 at halftime and 37-25 after three quarters on their way to the 10 point win. Both teams used a very good man to man defense throughout the game, but Salem’s superior height was the difference as they scored several points from the paint. Noah Allen led the Redbirds in scoring with 17 points, 12 of which came in the second half.  Click on the article to read the story  from westfrakfortsports.com

Sam Houston State holds on to beat Saluki Men’s Basketball, 79-73

CARBONDALE, Ill — Sam Houston State used a disruptive, trapping defense to build a big first-half lead, and then held on down the stretch for a 79-73 win over Southern Illinois on Saturday.

The smaller Bearkats (6-3) applied pressure the length of the court, forcing 16 turnovers that led to 17 points in the game. They also contested open shots and held SIU to 41 percent shooting, including 6-of-23 from 3-point.

“We’re just going to try to wear people down,” said Sam Houston State head coach Jason Hooten. “I didn’t think either team played very well today. I didn’t think we played great, but I do think we had some stretches where defensively we did some good things.”

Offensively, SHSU was led by 6-foot-7 forward Chris Galbreath, who came off the bench to score 26 points on 10-of-15 shooting from the field. He was consistently able to find an open spot in Southern’s defense, and his jumper from 10-12 feet away was deadly. He ran off six-straight points late in the first half to give the Bearkats their biggest lead of the afternoon, 40-24.

The Salukis (5-5) struggled to get their offense in gear during the first 20 minutes. They committed seven turnovers without an assist

before Mike Rodriguez found Armon Fletcher for a 3-pointer with 5:58 to go in the half. Fletcher led SIU with 14 points.

“I knew four minutes into this game that we had no energy,” said SIU head coach Barry Hinson. He said his kicked the team out of practice on Thursday because they “were feeling sorry for ourselves” after losing at Louisville on Wednesday.

When the teams met last year in Texas, the Bearkats blew an 18-point lead and lost in overtime, as Anthony Beane single-handedly took control of the game for Southern. Today, no one rose to the occasion for the Salukis.

Trailing by 10 at halftime, Southern did make a couple of runs in the second half. Twice in the final five minutes, the Salukis cut the deficit to four. Both times, Sam Houston State answered with a key bucket. After Sean Lloyd made a pair of free throws to slice the lead to 64-60, SHSU point guard John Dewey III, who had 10 assists in the contest, made a driving layup with 4:15 to go. After Fletcher buried a trey at the 3:50 mark to make it 68-64, Aurimas Majauskas countered with a trey to put the Bearkats back up by seven, 71-64.

“Watching their games against Murray State and Texas Southern, I thought those were 50-50 games at the end, and Southern Illinois didn’t do anything to hurt themselves or lose those games,” Hooten said. “Those other teams they played did — Murray State made mistakes, Texas Southern made mistakes. I did tell our guys, you’re going to have to beat them, they’re not going to beat themselves.”

The Salukis got solid several performances off the bench with a season-high 26 points combined. Lloyd had 10 points, while seldom-used forward Jonathan Wiley had a career-high six points and four rebounds in 14 minutes.

“We have some guys coming off the bench giving us lots of pep,”

SIU Coach Barry Hinson on the sidelines in the Saluki win over Murray State (SIU Sports Information Department)

Hinson said. “Certainly, Jonathan Wiley was huge for us today, because I don’t know where Sean (O’Brien) was.”

Coming off a double-double at Louisville, O’Brien had just two points today. Along with Mike Rodriguez and Leo Vincent, SIU’s three seniors were 7-for-23 from the field.

“I think our three seniors, honestly, have to take stock in this program,” Hinson said. “They have to be at a point where they communicate to the rest of these guys what it takes to win a game. (The coaching staff) talked until we were blue in the face. (Sam Houston State) is picked to win the Southland Conference.”

Hinson indicated some personnel changes might be forthcoming.

“We gotta shake up the lineup,” he said. “I think it’s time. We’ve got some guys that are really comfortable. I can’t imagine we’ll start the same lineup against Saint Louis on Wednesday.”

Hinson acknowledged his team took Sam Houston State lightly.

“I thought we disrespected their program in a tremendous way,” he said. “I thought we disrespected our fans today in a tremendous way. We did not give our best effort. That is unacceptable, and that is all on (me). It’s my job to make sure we respect our opponent and respect people paying to come to games to spend their hard-earned money to watch a ball-club that plays hard.”

Hinson added, “on Wednesday night, we may not win, but we are going to play hard.”

The FCHS Lady Redbirds Varsity and JV basketball teams both defeated Johnston City Saturday. In the Varsity game, West Frankfort came out on top 63-35. The Lady Redbirds got off to a slow start as they committed several turnovers on their way to a 10-6 first quarter lead. WOODLAWN (2-3) AT CHRISTOPHER (2-1)

The last time the Christopher Bearcats stepped on the floor was a 61-57 defeat to the Wayne City, in the Championship Game of their own Turkey Tournament.  Woodlawn was 55-32 winners last night against the Odin Eagles.  The Cardinals were very competitive in a

very tough Carlyle Kaskaskian Classic, where they finished fifth.

The Cardinals have only one starter back in guard Blake Wollerman, for the team that finished fourth place at the Class 1A State Tournament.  Trey Isasc and Jordan Hoppa were the first two off the bench.  The cupboard is not bear for first year coach Scott Gamber.

I watched all three games at Christopher.  Teams were keying on Bradley Young.  Kaleab Pedigo had an explosive week averaging 27 a game.  Jared Curry had a nice week as well too.

Young is going to explode on someone, and it is going to be tonight.  The Bearcats have some unfinished from last year and they are going to win by three tonight.

SALEM (3-3) at WEST FRANKFORT (1-2)

Salem finished fourth in the Lawrenceville Capital Classic and has split in their next two games.  An eleven point win over Fairfield got my attention.  However, a loss to Mascoutah sent their stock south.

Noah Allen and Austin Glodich have been carrying most of the scoring burden for the Redbirds this year.

It is tough to analyze a team that is coming out of the Apollo conference, when most teams have a 217 area code.  Logic would go with the Wildcats tonight.  I am going with my gut and my heart and going with the Redbirds by one.  I expect Kyle Hammers to have a breakout game tonight at Max Morris Gym

Rangers defeat Herrin in key SIRR Ohio match up

HERRIN — Plan A for Benton guard Timmy Henson was taking the in-bounds pass and driving nearly the length of the floor for the game-winning shot. Herrin’s defense never forced Plan B. Henson

drove the length of the floor in 3.9 seconds to can the game-winning layup with 2.6 ticks on the clock as the Rangers pulled out a thrilling 54-52 SIRR Ohio win over the Tigers at Memorial Gym on Friday night. The Rangers 6-0 and 1-0 in the SIRR Ohio, will host undefeated Carmi-White County, in a newly renovated Rich Herrin Gym Tuesday night.

Tigers get whipped by Webber…Woodlawn and Waltonville also win

Thompsonville fell to Webber Township 76-39 last night. Woodlawn also wins. They come and visit the Christopher Bearcats tonight. All three games last night will have a bearing on the seeds at the Sesser-Valier Holiday Tournament….Click to read the piece from the Mount Vernon Register-News

High School Basketball Preview 12/9/16

Steve Dunford Franklin County Hoops and Gridiron

Five out of the six teams in the county will be in action tonight, four will have conference games.  The games will be previewed below.  I have the county schools going 1-4 tonight.  I might be the most hated man in the county right now after you read this.  Around 10 P.M. I hope I am the biggest liar in the county.  It does not get any better than HS basketball on a cold winter’s night around Southern Illinois.

Benton (5-1) at Herrin (4-1)

This is the conference opener for both SIRR Ohio division teams tonight.  Benton is coming off a 5-0 Goreville Tournament championship.  Herrin is coming off of a strong 4-1 showing at the Pyramid Plus on Thanksgiving week.

Herrin has basically the same core coming back from last year in

Ranger All Tournament team recipients from the Goreviille Invitational, left Austin Wills, middle Timmy Henson (MVP) right Derek Oxford

Nessler, Spell, and the Downen twins.  Benton has the same core as well too.

Rust might be a factor for the Tigers tonight, not playing in two weeks.  The Goreville Game on Saturday night of the tournament was the only real test the Rangers has had.

I say the Rangers will come out of Memorial gym tonight at the skin of their teeth.  I am going with the Rangers by three in a barn burner.

Harrisburg (1-2) at West Frankfort (1-1)

Harrisburg is coming off of a 1-2 week at the Ernie Bozarth Classic in Murphysboro.  The Redbirds were defeated at Eldorado last Tuesday night by twelve points, in which the Eagles seemed to dominate.  Tonight, both teams open SIRR Ohio play.

Blake Drue might be out for the season for the Bulldogs, but Coach Randy Smithpeters has a lot of role players that are back from last year.  At the top of the list is 6’ 3” junior Isaiah Saulsbury.

This is one of those games that you don’t really know what to expect.  What I do not see is the Redbirds having an answer to shut down Salusbury.  I am going with Harrisburg by five.  I hope that when I make the walk home from Max Morris gym, I will be wrong, talking about a Redbird victory.

Chester (5-1)(0-1) at Sesser-Valier (1-4)(0-0)

Earlier in the week I would have said Yellow Jackets by 20.  The questions I have, Is Vienna that good, Did Chester overlook them, or do they miss Dylan Schwartz that bad?

Chester losing Wednesday night still has me shaking my head.  The Devils might have got blown out at Okawville Tuesday night, but was far from being embarrassed up there.

I am going Chester by 10.  This is one of those match-ups that peaks my curiosity and I am looking forward to seeing how it turns out.

Zeigler-Royalton (1-3)(0-0) at Vienna (5-1)(1-0)

As I said earlier, I am still shaking my head about the Eagles making the long road trip and beating Chester Wednesday night.

I am afraid it is going to be a long night for the Tornadoes down at the Eagles Nest.  If Z-R gets hot from the outside, and Vienna overlooks them, the Tornadoes might be able to stay around or spring the upset.

I have to go with Vienna by 20.

Thompsonville (3-3) at Webber Township (4-1)

This is a rematch in the opening round of the Christopher Thanksgiving Tournament where Webber defeated T’ville 62-56.

I am just going to say this.  If Tigers play tonight like they did Tuesday night down at Carrier Mills, the Trojans will blow them out.  If they have showings like they did when they have played NCOE this year, it might be a good ball game; and Thompsonville might leave Bluford with a win tonight.

I have to go with the law of averages.  I have to go with Webber by eight, especially at home.

Several Franklin County former basketball players recognized on RLC Alumni Weekend

One thing in this picture, I noticed there are a lot of coaches and some officials in the picture.  Nearly every Franklin County High school had alumnus  who attended the event.  I wonder if Ron Stanart sang the National Anthem before the Warriors’ Game?
