CARBONDALE — Sean O’Brien did as much talking on the court as off it Wednesday night against Indiana State. SIU’s only fourth-year starter on the floor at SIU Arena scored a career-high 28 points, 18 in the second half and overtime, to help the Salukis hold off Indiana State 80-74 at SIU Arena. O’Brien made 11 of 21 from the field, including his first 3-pointer since Dec. 7 last year at Louisville, and grabbed a team-high 14 rebounds in 41 minutes……”He was in sync, and what you guys may not be able to see all the time, in every huddle, he’s telling guys what to do and where to go,” SIU coach Barry Hinson said. “He’s starting to become a leader. He’s starting to figure out now I’m gonna be a leader for this team, so, I’m proud of him.”…….”The coaches just did a good job of drawing up plays for me to get the ball down low, and my teammates like Mike (Rodriguez) were doing good giving me the ball, and just playing off me,” O’Brien said. “It wasn’t the plan going into the game, but as I made some shots, they did a good job finding me.”……click to read the rest of the story and other features about SIU’s win last night from Todd Hefferman, Saluki beat writer of the Soutehrn Illinoisan.

Morthland Second Half Rally Falls Short, 90-84

Morthland College Media Services

West Frankfort – After a blistering start by the visiting Pioneers of Crowley’s Ridge, the Patriots’ second half comeback stalled as Morthland fell 90-84 in their first game of the new year.

The first half saw plenty of offense, but it was the Pioneers’ hot shooting that was the story in the first twenty minutes. CRC shot 50 percent from the field, but an even better 54 percent from beyond the arc, resulting in a 16-point halftime deficit for the hosts.

Dylan Burmester did his best to help the Patriots keep pace, with four first half three pointers, but timely scoring from CRC stretched the lead to as large as 17.

Foul trouble also took its toll, and the seven-man rotation at the disposal of Coach Rich Herrin was put to the test early, as Tyler Burmester and Ashton Worgu picked up four and three fouls, respectively. Ben McFarland saw extended minutes as a result and played inspired basketball, hitting an early three and collecting numerous important rebounds.

Trailing 57-41 at the beginning of the second half, the Patriots began to mount a comeback and, just over five minutes in, clawed the lead down to two, thanks in part to six points from Aaron Rushing, who spent much of the night  being hounded inside by multiple bodies.

Unfortunately, every Patriot run was met with a Pioneer response, and the hosts were never able to draw level. The early first half foul trouble eventually caught up with Morthland, as Rushing, Worgu, and Tyler Burmester all fouled out of the game, prompting one last effort.

After pulling within three on a Demaria Nance jumper with under 45 seconds to play, CRC was able to withstand the Patriot pressure and close out the game.

Dylan Burmester led the way for the Patriots, finishing with 32 points on eight three pointers. Tyler Burmester finished with 15, Rushing had 14, and McFarland collected nine points and nine boards.

CRC finished with four players in double figures, paced by Cade Niswonger with 21.

Morthland (7-6) will be back in action on Wednesday, January 11, as they take on Logan University on the campus of Rend Lake College. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30.

Tuesday Night Basketball-1/3/17

Steve Dunford

My goal is to at least have a box score or a story from every girls or boys High School varsity game in the county.  Every day is a learning experience for me.  Speed and timeliness will come in time.

I might not be the best sports writer.  News is something new to me.  I want to keep everyone informed of the things around Franklin County to the best of my ability.

Tigers fall short to arch rival Bearcats in consecutive games…

Steve Dunford

016GALATIA-For the second game in a row the Thompsonville Tigers faced their conference rivals and neighbors the Galatia Bearcats, and both times fell to defeat.

Last night it was a see saw battle and The Tigers had a three rim in and out in the final seconds to fall to defeat 47-44.

I know I say this time and time again but free throws and turnovers hurt the Tigers again.  They took much better care of the basketball the last three quarters.  They coughed the ball up 10 times in the first quarter but only ended up with 19 on the night.  They were 6/14 from the free throw line and the Bearcats were 10/15.

Here is what Tiger Coach Pete Gordon had to say about last night’s game,   ” We still had too many turnovers.  The fact we had a decent look at a three to win was a positive.  Free Throws, breakdowns, and just an overall understanding of how to attack a zone is disappointing.  I am still happy that my players play hard and compete.  We just have to still learn from our errors and try to improve.  We will continue to get better and I know we can compete with anyone on our schedule and we need to find ways to win some of these games.”

Galatia Coach Rod Wallace described it as a very good defensive game by both teams.

Cory Wilce led the Tigers with 10 points on the night and led with three steals.  Corbin Fitch added nine points, Tyson Kessler eight and led the Tigers with five assists.  Jared Payne also added eight points.  Anthoney Darge led the Tigers with five rebounds and four blocks.

For Galatia, Luke Lawrence led all scorers on the night with 15 points, Kody Matthews added 11 points with five steals, Austin Stevens scored nine and Will Pulliam won the battle of the boards with 12 rebounds on the night.

The Bearcats improve to 4-11 and 3-2 in the GEC.   The Tigers fall to 3-7 and 1-2 in the GEC.

T’ville will be at home for the first time in a month on Friday as play the Hardin County Cougars in a GEC match up. Both games between the two last year were dandies, and I expect another on on Friday night.  I smell this young ball club going on a run soon.

Galatia will be at home on Friday playing Agape Christian out of Marion in a non conference game.

Happy Birthday to Coach Gordon’s wife Sarah.  I hope it was a great one.

In one of the most exciting games of the season, the FCHS Lady Redbirds basketball team picked up a thrilling 92-87 overtime victory at home Tuesday against the Gallatin Co. Hawks. West Frankfort led at every quarter break 20-15, 43-32 and 65-60, but with the help of outstanding outside shooting, Gallatin Co. mounted a strong comeback in the 4th quarter. With the Redbirds leading 81-78, and only :04 in regulation, the Hawks executed perfectly as they came full court and set up a 20 foot 3-pointer that went through the basket as the buzzer sounded to tie the game 81-81. West Frankfort’s outstanding senior, Morgan Griffith took over in the overtime as she scored 8 of her teams 11 points on their way to the 5 point victory. First Franklin County HS boys basketball preview of 2017

by Steve Dunford

There are four HS boys basketball games that I will preview tonight.  All three of the county BDC West schools are in action and Thompsonville makes the 10 mile trip down Route 34 to take on their arch rival Galatia Bearcats.

VIENNA (9-3)(3-0) vs SESSER-VALIER(5-7)(1-1)

After watching the Eagles a couple times from Eldorado, I was thinking these two teams match-up well.  The both have a good inside-outside game, and the both have deep benches.  pitchfork

Here is what Devils Coach Shane Garner has to say about tonight’s game, ” They are a very hard nosed playing team, very fundamentally sound and tough on defense. We will have to handle their pressure and be strong when attacking the basket. They are a very good penetrating team on offense and containing the dribble will be our main concern on the defensive end.”vienna

Here is what Vienna coach Cory Waters had to say about making the bus trip from Johnson County tonight, “Sesser is a good team that plays hard and with a lot of energy. We will have to match their energy and play well if we want to go on the road and win.  Playing in the EHT was a good experience. We didn’t compete as well as we would have liked, going 1-2 but we are using that experience to learn and get better as a team.”

The Eagles have a very good back court consisting of Ben Daine and Lucas Strickland, and Brandon Casey is a nice post player.  This will be one of those series in the conference that I can see being a split.  I am going with the Devils by two at home.

THOMPSONVILLE (3-7)(1-2) at GALATIA (4-7)(2-3)

tville-logoFor the Tigers this is the second meeting of the row against the Bearcats.  Galatia knocked off T’ville 64-50 in the consolation quarterfinals of the Sesser-Valier Holiday Tournament.  Galatia was beat in the next round by two points by Century.

This is what Thompsonville coach Pete Gordon had to say about tonight’s game, “Twenty five turnovers, that’s how many we had last time we played Galatia.  If we can cut that in half I like our chances we have to somehow learn to value the basketball.

There were gaps in the video from last week, but here are a few galatiathings that I picked up on.  What I saw in the second half, was the run and gun style of play is how Rod Wallace likes to play and led to a lot of Tiger turnovers.

Galatia controlled the tempo, and won the basketball game.  T’ville is going to have to find the three point stroke again to win to bring Galatia out of that 2-3 zone.  I don’t have official stats, but it seems like the Bearcats won the battle of the boards.

I am going with Galatia by five.  It seems like since the beginning of time, those two schools split their home and home’s every year.

CHRISTOPHER (7-4)(1-0) vs TRICO (4-8)(0-1)

christopher-bearcatsChristopher cut down the nets at Sesser last week.  Trico had a very tough time of it at the DTHC.

I am not that familiar with the Pioneers.  I know that Justin Bauersachs was looked at on having a bright future.  Myerhoff and Compton, who are appearing in some box scores saw some time off the bench.

With Bradley Young getting his 15-20 a game, him along with Jared tricoCurry and Kaelab Pedigo will be a force to be reckoned with during the second half.

I am going with the Bearcats by 10.  They are poised to get a number one seed at Crab Orchard.  Wayne City is the other regional host.

CHESTER (9-4)(1-2) vs ZEIGLER-ROYALTON (1-6)(0-1)

chesterI watched some film this afternoon when the Yellowjackets played Goreville at the Sesser-Valier Holiday Tournament.

My conclusion is that Chester causes Z-R more match-up problems than any team in the conference.

I am going with Chester by 25.  It might be a long night for the z-r-logo-2Torndadoes, but things are looking up.  Giving Woodlawn all they wanted in the first round of the SVHT says volumes.  They will give some teams some scares in the second half and maybe pull off an upset or two.  I have a feeling it will not be tonight.

Christopher Bearcats sixth in ABV Jack’s new rankings

abv-jackAfter cutting down the nets at the Sesser-Valier Holiday Tournament, Jack Bullock of abaselineview.com has the Christopher Bearcats ranked the 6th Class 1A in his rankings that came out this morning. The Bearcats improved to 7-5 on the season after making their four game run last week at S-V. They beat the Waltonville

The Bearcats team photo after winning the Sesser-Valier Holiday Tournament

The Bearcats team photo after winning the Sesser-Valier Holiday Tournament

Spartans 61-54 in the championship game. The Sesser-Valier Red Devils are honorable mention in 1A. They finished third at their own holiday tournament, by beating 1A dynasty, the Woodlawn Cardinals 51-47. The Devils improved to 5-7, after playing a very brutal schedule so far. (Look for the West Frankfort Redbirds to crack the honorable mention in 2A soon. They won the consolation championship at Eldorado, by beating Joe Hosman’s Massac County Patriots 46-33.) I am going to explain something here. I am going to be posting conference standings soon. I am going to do this in the following order. I am going to post the BDC west first because of the three county schools in the conference, Christopher, S-V, and Z-R. I will post the SIRR Ohio second, because of Benton and West Frankfort, two schools. I will post the GEC last because T’ville is the only county school in the conference. In the BDC west the Vienna Eagles (9-3) and The Chester Yellowjackets (9-4) are honorable mention in 2A. The Goreville Blackats (6-5) are honorable mention in 1A. The Eagles bowed out of the consolation semi-finals, losing to Massac 68-49 at Eldorado. Goreville and Chester faced each other in the 5th place game at Sesser, with the Blackcats coming out on top 57-51. In the GEC the Gallatin County Hawks (7-4) are ranked 8th in 1A. They had an impressive week at Eldorado, finishing fourth by playing the big boys. They had wins over Massac County and Fairfield, they gave the champions, Eldorado, all they wanted before running out of gas against Carmi. Carrier Mills (4-9) is honorable mention in 1A. They bowed out at Eldorado, losing to Union County KY 81-69. The Crab Orchard Trojans (10-4) had Christmas break off. Their last game was on December 17th, defeating a very good Webber Township team 67-58 in the fifth place game at the Conrad Allen Holiday Tournament. They cracked the 1A honorable mention too. I need to explain something here. I am going to educate you about the site as I go. If I do not use a run on paragraph, the links break. Please visit Jack Bullock’s site, abaselineview.com. It is the premiere website covering HS basketball in the 618 and a chunk of the 217.

Patriots Unable to Shake Off the Rust in Loss to Webster, 83-67

Senior PG Cody Schultz from Paducah Tighlman, drives around a Webster defender.

Christmas Break wasn’t good for the Patriot men’s basketball team. Morthland came out and shot under 40 percent as a team en route to a 83-67 defeat against Webster University. After heading into the time off by dominating back to back games, the Patriots lost their mojo and had the tables flipped on them as they played from behind all game. Just nine minutes into play the boys were already down by double-digits on a two-point basket by Webster’s Xavier Dortch that put the Gorloks ahead 19-8. Not only were the Patriots up against one of the best mascots in the collegiate realm, but they were facing a well-coached bunch under the direction of Chris Bunch. Morthland saw glimpses of dominance as nearly every other possession saw outstanding ball movement followed by an open look. The winter rust was just too much to overcome as they only shot 16 for 33 in the first half. A 14 point deficit heading into the half is one of the largest that Morthland has faced this season. Head Coach Rich Herrin and his boys looked for answers against the fast-paced offense and tough zone defense of the Gorloks. “They came out in a stretched out zone that we really struggled with,” said Aaron Rushing. “We normally play against man to man defense, so we’ll have to be more prepared for that next time.” Unfortunately, the second half picked up right where the first left off, and Morthland was quickly lost grasp of any chance at a comeback. The final buzzer rang to a disappointing final score that many Patriot fans weren’t accustomed to. Please read the following link form the Morthland College Sports Information Department.
