MURRAY, KY (Jeff BIdwell -WPSD -TV Please click on the link to read the full story. Here is an excerpt) Murray State is staying in the Ohio Valley Conference after the Missouri Valley Conference decided against inviting Murray State. The MVC is looking to replace the departing Wichita State for the 2017-18 school year. The MVC was reportedly looking at four schools to potentially join their conference: Murray State, Valparaiso, Milwaukee, and Nebraska-Omaha. There was a belief the MVC could add up to three schools at this time and expand their conference membership from ten to 12. While there has been no official word from Missouri Valley Conference commissioner Doug Elgin, leaving Murray State out of the mix appears to signal the conference is comfortable staying at ten schools. Murray State Director of Athletics Allen Ward released the following statement Monday morning: “Today I was notified that Murray State will not be receiving an invitation to join the Missouri Valley Conference. I am in no way disappointed by the news or have any regrets being involved in the process. Our goals and objectives to graduate our student-athletes, win championships, promote this great university, and be a player on the national scene have not changed and were never reliant on the outcome today.

by Steve Dunford

Noah Vance, Brendan Johnson, and Tyson Broy combined on a two hit shutout as the West Frankfort Redbirds defeated the Vienna Eagles 1-0.  It was a crisply played game as it took 1:45 to play.

The Vienna pitching was very good on the afternoon as well, Christian Pearl, Layton Edmonds, and Ryan Wright did not allow an earned run.

The only Redbird run was scored in the bottom of the second as Bryce Dorris scored on a passed ball.  The Redbirds left the bases loaded in that inning.  West Frankfort had runners on in every inning, stranding 12.

Vance also led WF at the plate on the afternoon as he went 2-4.  First baseman Tyson Elko had two hits on the afternoon for West Frankfort.   The Redbirds had 8 hits.  Third baseman Jaryd Clark made a Scott Rolen style diving stop, throwing the runner out at first.

West Frankfort improve to 10-8 on the season.  They were supposed to take the long road trip to Junction tomorrow to face Gallatin County.  The Hawks have a makeup Greater Egyptian conference game on the road facing the Crab Orchard Trojans.

The Redbirds will be at home on Wednesday facing the Pinckneyville Panthers. It will be Senior Day.

BENTON, IL (Amanda Jarzynski, Benton Evening News. Please click to read the entire story. Here is an excerpt) The weather brightened just in time for the Benton Rangerettes (15-9) to host their Benton Tournament on Saturday. They played at Benton Park and finished second just under the Goreville Blackcats. However, the Rangerettes also celebrated a second place finish in the Southern Illinois River-to-River Conference under Herrin. This came from their first win of the tournament; 8-4 over the Massac County Lady Patriots. “Obviously we’d like to be champions, but we weren’t able to get Herrin,” said Ryan Miller, Rangerettes’ coach. “It’s been a good season so far. I hope this win will springboard us to more success in the last few games.”

Tigers saluted their seniors last Tuesday

by Steve Dunford

Tville Seniors baseball

The Thompsonville Tigers saluted their three seniors last Tuesday in a GEC conference game to the Gallatin County Hawks at the First Baptist Church pavilion and field.

Tiger assistant coach Chris Raubach has this to say about each one. His comments will be in italics.

1B Jared Payne is also having a great season at the plate. He is hitting between .350-.400

I have not been able to watch the Tigers on the diamond this year, but I have watched these kids play on the hardwood a lot over the years.

Payne is one of those individuals that will turn the tide for the future of Tiger athletics.

His Sophomore year he played on an 0-26 team in basketball that played hard and battled.

He was the center stone of two very young teams his junior and senior year on the hardwood.

This is only the second year that Thompsonville has fielded a stand alone baseball team in a long time. Galatia ended the over a decade long co-op. He was one of the original pieces that in the future will be looked back on getting the program a start, as well as the good things to come for T’ville basketball.

Austin Lunde is our center fielder and has also pitched some for us.

Lunde did not play basketball this year, but I watched him give Pete Gordon some solid minutes off the bench his junior year.

In baseball, he had some good range in the OF and had a plus arm,  Like I said I did not see them yet this year but with the pitch count coming into play this year, he was what every team needs, an innings eater.

The last is LF Noah Summers, who made an appearance on the mound.

Every program needs a Noah Summers in it.  He scratched and clawed for each second or half inning he gets on the field.

He had the chance to make a couple starts in basketball this year.  He is a competitor. That Fire in the belly he has is what every program needs someone to have.

As far as the program this year, they had several games washed out.  They also had to push back some games during spring break because they did not have enough arms to go around because of the pitch count.

The pitch count is a great thing, too many kids having Tommy John at an early age.

The Tigers have been led by P-INF, sophomore Reed Raubach.  He has flirted with the .500 mark at the plate all year, and picked up a win on the mound against one of the top 1A programs in Southern Illinois, the Crab Orchard Trojans.

One of the season highlights according to Coach Raubach, was a grand slam by 3B Tyler Jones against Galatia.

The Tigers will be at home at least one more time this year as they host Joppa in a first round regional game.

Thompsonville has not won a regional in any boys sport,  Whether it be on the diamond or hardwood, that could change when this group of underclassmen, who are the same cast of characters in both sports , become upperclassmen.

Rangers fall to Nashville yesterday

NASHVILLE, IL – (Amanda Jarzynski – Benton Evening News – Please click on the link for the full story – Here is an excerpt) After dropping an 11-3 loss to Mascoutah on Sunday, the Benton Rangers (20-4) hoped to get back on track when they visited Nashville. Unfortunately, things did not go in favor of the Rangers and they took their fourth loss of the season by a score of 4-1 to the Hornets. We just didn’t get the hits we needed when we needed them,” said Brett Blondi, Rangers’ coach. “We hit some line drives right at them. In the field we could’ve been a little tighter. When you’ve got a kid throwing over 100 in just four innings… McMahon was as sharp as he usually is, so there was something going wrong there (with calls being made by the umpire).”

Redbirds improve to .500 over win over W-S-V

by Steve Dunford

The West Frankfort Redbirds sent 14 men to the plate in the bottom of the fourth, score nine runs, on only four base hits, to defeat the Waltonville-Sesser Valier Spartans 12-2.

The Redbirds were coming off a win yesterday against Anna-Jonesboro.  W-S-V who had not played in a week, were rusty, especially defensively.

Noah Vance pitches a complete game for the Redbirds, allowing two runs on five hits.

Charles Farmer, was making quick work of WF, not allowing an earned run until the bottom of the fourth inning, took the loss.  He just ran out of gas, losing command of the strike zone.

The first two and a half innings were played at a brisk pace, and looked like it was going to end up a low scoring pitchers duel.

The Redbirds scored three runs in the bottom of the third as RF Zach Lindsey hit an RBI double, driving in Noah Vance who reached on an error. Lindsey later scored on a passed ball.  Peyton Overturf had an RBI base hit, driving in Jared Clark who reached on a walk.  After three it was 3-0, WF.

In the top of the fourth, Charles Farmer leads off with a base hit, CF Dalton Banach doubles to center, Seth Boles and Tanner Eubanks pick up RBI’s on ground outs.  Zach Lindsey makes a diving stop on a one hopper in RF to throw Eubanks out at first.   In the middle of the fourth it was 3-2 Redbirds.

In the bottom of the fourth, when things became ugly, the offensive highlights for the Redbirds were, pitcher Noah Vance picks up an RBI double, singles by Lucas Wolfe, Peyton Overturf, and Brendan Russel, and an RBI ground out by Jared Clark.  After four it was 12-2, West Frankfort.

The Spartans tried to get something going in the top of the fifth, with second and third, no one out, from a single up the middle from catcher Drake Houghland, and a double in the left ceterfield gap by Preston Launius.  They were left stranded, as Noah Vance strikes out two and gets a pop up for the complete game.

The Redbirds improve to 8-8 on the season and travel to DuQuoin to take on the Indians this afternoon, weather permitting.  The Spartans fall to 15-5 (?)
