Miners Drop Extra-Inning Rubber Match To Beach Bums

The Southern Illinois Miners had the lead twice in a pitcher’s duel on Friday night against the Traverse City Beach Bums at Rent One Park, but the visitors scored the tying runs in the middle frames, then went ahead in the 11th inning before hanging on for a 5-4 win in the rubber match of the three-game series.

The game went by quickly through the first six innings, as starters Chris Washington and John Havird kept the other team’s offense off-balance. It was Havird who cracked first, hitting Nolan Earley with a pitch to lead off the bottom of the fifth inning. After a single by Justin Chigbogu moved him to third base, Ben Moore‘s single drove him in and made it 1-0 Miners. The Beach Bums got the run right back in the top of the sixth, as Giancarlo Brugnoni reached on a wild pitch after striking out, was sacrificed to second base and scored on an RBI single by Arby Fields to make it 1-1. It would be the only run Washington allowed in seven innings in his first professional start for the Miners, with no walks and five strikeouts.

In the bottom of the seventh, Havird departed after allowing a single to Willi Martin and a one-out double by Chigbogu. A balk on Enrique Oquendo brought home the go-ahead run to make it 2-1, but Traverse City again tied the score right away on a pinch-hit single by Jeff DeBlieux in the top of the eighth inning, knotting the score at 2-2.

Both teams had chances to break the tie in the late innings. In the bottom of the eighth, with two outs, the Miners loaded the bases but left them loaded, and Southern Illinois stranded two more runners in the tenth inning. Traverse City also had two runners on in the ninth and tenth frames, but John Werner and Nick Palacios kept them off the board.

In the 11th inning, with the International Tiebreaker in effect, Alexis Rivera singled home the go-ahead run, and Elijah Trail followed two batters later with a ground-rule double that brought home two additional runs to make the score 5-2 Beach Bums. Chigbogu led off the bottom half with an automatic runner at second by crushing a two-run home run to center field to get the Miners within 5-4. With two outs, London Lindley singled to keep the game alive, but a flyout by Craig Massey ended the contest as the visitors escaped with the series-clinching win.

Chigbogu went 3-for-5 with a double, home run and two RBIs, while Ryan Lashley also had three hits in five at-bats in the game, but it was not enough. The Miners will look to bounce back on Friday night when they entertain the Lake Erie Crushers at 7:05 p.m. in the first game of a weekend series.

Benton Remains 3A……barely

The Illinois High School Association announced school enrollments and classifications for the 2017-2018 school year.

The cutoff for Class 2A/3A basketball is an enrollment of 554.  Benton sits at 564.

West Frankfort dropped to 2A last year and will remain, as they have an enrollment of 517 down from 542 last year.  Harrisburg stays 2A also.

For all the other schools in the county, Zeigler-Royalton, saw an increase in enrollment.   Their enrollment increased to 180, which was 161 last year.    Thompsonville also saw an increase from 97 to 111.

Sesser-Valier’s enrollment dropped from 222 to 206.  Christopher’s fell from 254 to 234.

WF Redbirds Bass Fishing take home some IHSA hardware

CARLYLE, IL –  The West Frankfort Redbirds Bass Fishing team of Cole Levanti and Brendan Johnson brought home third place in the IHSA State Bass Fishing tournament today at Carlyle Lake.  They weighed in at 10 lb. 5 0z.

The two had some momentum going into today’s round.  The fishing slowed again today after the front passed, and the wind switched to the north.

Both are Sophomores and  multi-sport athletes.  Levanti should see significant time for Kevin Toney on the hardwood the next couple of years.  Johnson was the punter and seen some time at FS down the stretch for Brian Beery on the football field.

After finishing third in the Lake of Egypt Sectional, a couple hours later Johnson pitched in relief for the Redbirds, picking up a base hit.

The Redbirds are coached by Josh Hefner.  Scott Levanti is the boat captain for the team.

The Benton team of Connor Bacon and Josh Eickelman finished 26th in the tourney with 4 lb, 6 oz.

The Woodlawn Cardinals team of Beau Bennett and Jordan Hoppa finished 17th with 5 lb 2 0z.  There is a Franklin County connection as both spent the fall on the gridiron for SVWW.  They also were on the Elite Eight basketball team, that fell narrowly to Effingham St. Anthony in the Carbondale Supersectional.  Hoppa was a nice post player that could step out and pop the three.

The Crab Orchard Trojan team of Bailey Whitehead and Chase Arnold finished 23rd with 4 lb 10 oz.  Whitehead is a sophomore that saw a lot of time on the hardwood for Jon Brown this past basketball season.

The Pinckneyville team of Cory Dahn and Kyle Kreger finished 25th with 4 lb. 7 oz.

Cardinals DL Kolten Wong; Recall Paul DeJong from Memphis

The St. Louis Cardinals placed second baseman Kolten Wong on the 10-day disabled list today with right tricep strain and recalled rookie infielder Paul DeJong (dee-YOUNG) from Triple-A Memphis.

Wong, 26, was removed from Wednesday night’s game against Milwaukee in the top of the 6th inning and was replace by Greg Garcia for the remainder of the game.

The left-handed swinging Wong was on a six-game hitting streak (9-20, .450) and had raised his batting average to .301 as of last night, which would rank 15th in the National League but fell shy of the qualifying plate appearances.

Wong was recently activated from the disabled list on June 9, following an injury to his left elbow during which time he missed 13 games from May 27-June 8.

DeJong, 23, made his Major League debut on May 28 in Colorado hitting a home run in his first career at-bat. He played in 12 games at second base and shortstop while batting .244 (10-41) with a home run and four RBI.

The Cardinals optioned DeJong to Memphis following the game on Sunday, June 11, and he subsequently homered in each of his first two games back in Memphis, going 3-for-7 with three RBI and four runs scored.

DeJong currently ranks T-9th in the Pacific Coast League with 13 home runs and his .571 slugging percentage ranks 10th.

DeJong wears uniform No. 11.

St. Louis Cardinals complete 2017 First-Year Player Draft

Cardinals select 22 pitchers, 4 catchers, 8 infielders and 4 outfielders

The St. Louis Cardinals concluded the 2017 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft by selecting 38 players, 30 from the college ranks and eight from high school or prep academies. The list included 22 pitchers (7 left-hander & 15 right-handers), four catchers, eight infielders and four outfielders.

Four of the players are still playing in the NCAA College World Series: outfielder Scott Hurst and infielder Taylor Bryant of Cal-State Fullerton, shortstop Kramer Robertson of LSU and pitcher Jim Voyles of Florida State.

The draftees came from hometowns covering 18 states and Puerto Rico. The top producing state was California with nine players selected and Florida, Georgia and Texas were represented with three apiece.

Only one player drafted today by the Cardinals had been previously drafted, that being left-handed pitcher Andrew Summerville in the 34th round of the 2014 draft by the Seattle Mariners.

Four sets of college teammates were selected: Cal State-Fullerton had Scott Hurst (3rd round) and second baseman Taylor Bryant (33rd round); San Diego State had left-handed pitcher Brett Seeburger (10th round) and right-handed pitcher C.J. Saylor (28th round); Coastal Carolina had right-handed pitcher Will Latcham (17th round) and second baseman Wood Myers (29th round), although both transferred in and did not play for the 2016 National Championship squad; University of Arkansas-Little Rock had catcher Cameron Knight (32nd round) and right-handed pitcher Cory Malcom (34th round).

Players with athletic ties in their family included catcher Saul Garza (31st round) whose father Santana Garza played college baseball for University of Texas-Pan American; pitcher Jim Voyles (38th round) who has a twin brother Ed on the Florida State baseball team, and his father Ben and uncle Bill both played golf at Florida State.

Two-way players and players who switched positions include third baseman Drew Mendoza (11th round), who also pitched at North Carolina State, but was drafted as a third baseman, and C.J. Saylor (28th round), a converted catcher to relief pitcher, who nailed down 24 career saves for the Aztecs, tied for the second-most in the school’s history with current MLB pitcher Addison Reed.

Several of the team’s draftees came with exemplary athletic accolades. Outfielder Brandon Benson (20th round) batted .395 with 22 home runs, 79 RBI and a .819 slugging percentage at Georgia College and State University, ranking among the NCAA Division II leaders in home runs (2nd), RBI (3rd) and slugging (4th). Right-handed pitcher Jake Walsh (16th round) ranked 2nd in NCAA Division II with 12 wins while at Florida Southern College. Jake Dahlberg (21st round), a left-handed pitcher out of the University of Illinois-Chicago, was the first pitcher to be named Horizon League Pitcher of the Year twice, accomplishing the feat in 2015 and 2017. Thomas St. Clair (24th round), a right-handed pitcher out of Lenoir-Rhyne University, ranked 7th in NCAA Division II strikeouts with 116 including games with 17 and 16 strikeouts during the 2017 season. Right-handed pitcher Cory Malcom (34th round) set the University of Arkansas-Little Rock single-season school record with 109 strikeouts this year.

Blimp crashes near the US open

The pilot of the advertising blimp sustained serious injuries during the crash at the U.S. Open at Erin Hills on Thursday morning.

According to the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, the pilot was taken by Flight for Life with serious burns and injuries. The pilot was the only person inside the aircraft at the time of the crash

An initial investigation has revealed that the blimp may have experienced mechanical problems prior to the crash.

Miners Split Doubleheader With Traverse City

The Southern Illinois Miners split a doubleheader on Wednesday night against the Traverse City Beach Bums, scoring six runs in the sixth inning to come back from a three-run deficit and win 6-3 in the first game before falling 6-0 in the second game at Rent One Park.

In game one, Ethan Gibbons (3-1) and Reinaldo Lopez kept the opposition off the scoreboard until the top of the fourth inning, when Will Kengor’s double, a passed ball and a wild pitch scored the game’s first run to make it 1-0. Traverse City scored two more runs in the fifth after two walks led off the inning by Gibbons on an RBI single by Arby Fields and a double-play grounder for a 3-0 lead. Gibbons pitched a quality start, allowing just two earned runs on five hits in six innings to keep the Miners in the game.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Miners would bat around and not only tie the game, but surge ahead as well. After Ryan Lashley led off the frame with a single, Marc Flores walked and Kurt Wertz, Jr. singled to load the bases with no one out, and Traverse City went to their bullpen and brought in closer Jacob Lanning (0-3). Justin Chigbogu‘s sacrifice fly got the Miners on the board and made it 3-1. Ben Moore was then hit by a pitch to re-load the bases, and Willi Martin‘s pinch-hit walk forced in another run to make it 3-2. London Lindley followed with the big blow of the inning, a go-ahead, two-run single to center field that gave the Miners their first lead at 4-3. A Craig Massey sacrifice fly and a wild pitch scored two insurance runs later in the big inning and made it 6-3 Southern Illinois before John Werner pitched a scoreless ninth to nail down the save and the victory.

In the second game, after two walks in the first inning by Kody Knaus (0-1), with two outs, Alexis Rivera hit a three-run home run to give Traverse City a 3-0 lead. Knaus worked out of trouble in the second despite two walks, but a pair of walks leading off the third inning chased him from the game. Kengor then hit a three-run homer of his own off reliever Austin Dubsky to make it 6-0. Dubsky would settle down and pitch four innings out of the bullpen, striking out a career-best five in the game while permitting just one baserunner other than Kengor, but Augie Gallardo (3-1) held the Miners’ offense down over six innings of work as Southern Illinois split the twin-bill in Marion.

The Miners and Beach Bums will settle the series with a rubber match on Thursday night beginning at 7:05 p.m. It will feature a matchup of rookie left-handers, with Chris Washington making his first pro start for Southern Illinois and John Havird getting the ball for Traverse City.

WF Redbirds Bass Fishing Team in sixth place after first day of the State Tournament

CARLYLE, IL –  The West Frankfort HS bass duo of Cole Levanti and Brendan Johnson are in sixth place after day one of the IHSA bass tournament at Carlyle lake today.

They slayed them in the last hour after a weather delay.  They weighed in at 6 lb 6 oz, but had a half pound deduction for a dead fish.

The Benton Rangers are represented by Konner Bacon and Josh Eickleman.  They set at 29th, with a weigh in of 1 lb 6 oz.

From the GEC, the Crab Orchard Trojans have two teams in the tournament, as they finished in the top two in the Lake of Egypt Sectional.

The team of Chase Arnold and Bailey Whitehead is in 12th place with 3 lb. 9 oz. in the live well.  The solo team of Dyson Burfield did not catch a fish, as did several teams in the tourney today.

The tournament will resume tomorrow, weather permitting.
