Miners Fall To CornBelters In Series Finale

From the Southern Illinois Miners

MARION, IL The Southern Illinois Miners took an early lead on Sunday against the Normal CornBelters at Rent One Park but could not hold it as the visitors came back and piled on late to deal the home team a 7-2 loss, denying the Miners a series sweep in their final home contest before the all-star break.

After a scoreless first inning by Charlie Gillies (4-3) and Damon Proctor, with the latter making his professional debut for the Miners, Southern Illinois took the lead in the bottom of the second as Craig Massoni and Nolan Earley hit back-to-back leadoff singles. Two batters later, and RBI infield hit by Kurt Wertz, Jr. gave the Miners the initial 1-0 advantage.

But Normal responded by tying the game on an unearned run that scored from third base thanks to an error with two outs in the top of the third inning by Ryan Lashley, making the score 1-1. The game would remain tied until the fifth inning, when Aaron Dudley doubled to deep left field to score both Craig Lepre and Santiago Chirino and give the CornBelters a 3-1 lead. Normal then added a run in the sixth on an RBI single by Chirino to make it 4-1, and after a scoreless sixth inning by Jared Messer, the visitors put up another run in the eighth inning for a 5-1 margin.

The Miners rallied for a run in the bottom of the eighth when Brett Wiley singled and Massoni walked against Francisco Carillo before Willi Martin reached on an error by Chrino at shortstop, bringing home Wiley when the CornBelters failed to tag him out in a rundown between third base and home plate. With the game at 5-2 Normal, and the tying run at the plate, however, the Miners failed to score again in the frame. Normal then added two more runs in the ninth inning for the final margin.

Earley went 3-for-4 in the game to lead the Miners offensively, tying his season high in hits while extending his hit streak out to eight games. Massoni finished 2-for-3 with a run scored, but it was not enough as the Miners were denied a sixth straight home win.

The Miners will head on the road next for a three-game series against the Schaumburg Boomers beginning on Monday night at 6:30 p.m. Chris Washington will pitch for Southern Illinois, while the Boomers will counter with Conrad Wozniak.

The Southern Illinois Miners are the 2016 Frontier League West Division Champions, the 2014 and 2015 Frontier League East Division Champions and the 2012 Frontier League Champions. They have been awarded the Frontier League Organization of the Year award three times since their inception, and also set a new Frontier League attendance record in 2007, their inaugural season. Nationals Manager Dusty Baker was really nice to a nine year old kid

by Steve Dunford

Dusty Baker’s 1979 Topps baseball card. (Amazon photo)

As I was watching the Nationals whip up on the Cardinals tonight, my mind went back to August 14, 1979.  I did not remember the date.  I looked it up on Baseball Almanac.

There were a few things I remembered about that night.  The first was it was the night after Lou Brock picked up his 3,000th hit. There was a pregame ceremony Jack Buck was the emcee.  Cardinal owner “Gussie” Busch drove a Corvette onto the field and gave to Brock.

We had field boxes down by the Dodger bullpen.  I was still mad at the Cardinals for trading Reggie Smith to the Dodgers.  I still listened and watched all the Cardinal games.  With the Dodgers appearing in back to back World Series, my loyalty was leaning toward Tommy Lasorda’s Dodgers.

Smith went on the DL the night before.  Every Dodger starter and the whole pitching staff was great to sign autographs.  I remember that shortstop Bill Russell was a snob though, and I never liked him since the date.

Steve Garvey was great to all of us kids that were begging for autographs.  He spent time and had a conversation with each and every one of us.

My parents bought me a Dodger hat at the ballpark that night.  Dusty Baker noticed I had a Dodger tugged at the bill, and said he was going to hit a home run.  He also would look up at me and talk to me, while shagging balls in left field.

I knew he homered, but looking at the box score it was in the 8th inning off of John Denny, who was later a Cy Young award winner for The Phillies in 1983.

Burt Hooton was the starter for the Dodgers that night as he pitched a two hitter for the Cardinals.  I never knew why, but I did not like Hooton.  I guess because he pitched for the Cubs at one time.

This was two years before Fernandomainia swept across the U.S.  My favorite pitcher for the Dodgers was Don Sutton during that era who later went on to be a long time Atlanta Braves broadcaster.

The current Nationals manager is with his fourth team now.  Whether it was when Baker was managing the Giants, Reds. or the Cubs, the rivalry between him and then Cardinal manager Tony LaRussa was intense.  When Baker was with the Cubs especially those two would bark at each other in opposing dugouts.

Baker played for TLR in his last year as a player in Oakland in 1986, which LaRussa took over as the A’s manager in mid-season.   I always wondered if something carried over from that.  One thing I noticed was interesting when looking up some stats tonight, Baker was only four years younger, when he played for Tony LaRussa.

When the two butted heads, even when Baker was managing the Cubs, I always had a soft spot for him because of that night in 1979.

As I get older, I realize that when you show an act of kindness toward a small child, they will never forget it.   I have always said if you have an extra five minutes and an extra 50 cents never pass a lemonade stand up.  You will never regret it.

Here is the link to the box score from that night.

Stubblefield Dominates As Miners Top CornBelters, Take Series

From the Southern Illinois Miners

MARION, IL – The Southern Illinois Miners got a phenomenal start from left-hander Tyler Stubblefield and a three-run rally in the bottom of the fifth to beat the Normal CornBelters 3-1 at Rent One Park on Saturday night, clinching a series victory at home with their fifth-straight home win and 10th win in their last 14 games overall.

Miners lefty Tyler Stubblefield works seven strong innings to pick up the victory for the Miners. (Southern Illinois Miners photo)

The game began with both Stubblefield (3-1) and Normal’s Julio Vivas (3-4) dominating against the opposing offenses on the hill. The Miners got just four baserunners in the first four innings against Vivas on three singles and a walk, while Stubblefield allowed just two walks and one batter reaching base on an error without permitting a hit in his first four innings of work. After Miguel Torres doubled inside third base to lead off the fifth inning with Normal’s first hit, Stubblefield held the CornBelters off the board, and the Miners’ offense went to work in the bottom half.

Ben Moore led off with an infield single and Ryan Sluder followed with a walk. A fielder’s choice by Craig Massey put men at first and third base with one out, and Ryan Lashley‘s RBI single put the first run on the board and made it 1-0 Southern Illinois. After a fielder’s choice for the second out, Craig Massoni walked to load the bases, and Nolan Earley worked an eight-pitch at-bat against Vivas before lifting a two-run single into right-center field for a 3-0 lead.

Earley’s blow would end up being the deciding one in the game, as Stubblefield cruised along until a leadoff solo homer by Brian Hakes made the score 3-1 in the top of the eighth inning. After a single by Santiago Chirino with one out, Kyle Tinius came on and got the final two outs in the frame to hold the lead, and John Werner needed only five pitches to work a scoreless ninth inning to earn his ninth save and secure the win for Southern Illinois.

Southern Illinois received a balanced effort offensively, with seven of the nine batters in the order recording a hit. Massey finished 2-for-5, while Earley went 1-for-3 with two RBIs, extending a hitting streak to seven games in a row to lead the charge. Stubblefield finished with one run allowed on four hits in seven and one-third innings, striking out five and walking two to get his third straight win.

The Miners will look to sweep the CornBelters in their final home contest before the all-star break on Sunday night at 7:05 p.m. A starter to be named will pitch for the Miners, while Normal will counter with right-hander Charlie Gillies.

The Southern Illinois Miners are the 2016 Frontier League West Division Champions, the 2014 and 2015 Frontier League East Division Champions and the 2012 Frontier League Champions. Wacha, Mejia carry the Cardinals to victory

by Steve Dunford

ST LOUIS, MO –  Michael Wacha pitched six scoreless innings, giving up four hits and striking out nine, and Alex Mejia picked up his first major league hit, and hit is first big league homer as well, as the Cardinals win their fourth in a row, beating the Washington Nationals 2-1.

Gio Gonzales was very good, took the loss.  He pitched seven innings, allowing two hits.  He fell to 7-3 on the season.

For the most part, the Cardinal bullpen was very good.  Brett Cecil worked a scoreless 7th.  Sueng Hwan Oh struck out two batters in the 8th.  Tyler Lyons came in and picked up the third out in the inning.

Trevor Rosenthal, to say it mildly, had another rough outing.  He gave up the only Cardinal run on two hits, two walks, and missed the bag on a potential game winning double play.

Matheny gives Rosenthal the hook after loading the bases in favor of Matt Bowman.   The pitchers spot was up, and Nationals manager Dusty Baker, goes to Adrian Sanchez, who was the last position player on the bench for his first Major League at bat.

Sanchez hangs tough as he goes down on strikes looking.  Bowman picks up his first save of the season.

Wacha improves to 5-3 on the Season.

Carlos Martinez, 6-6, 2.88, takes the mound for the Cardinals against Matt Scherzer in a league leading 9-5, 2.06, on Sunday Night Baseball at 7:00 p.m. on ESPN.  This will be one of the best pitching matchups of the year across Major League Baseball.

In my opinion, the Cardinals should be in a holding pattern

by Steve Dunford

You have heard me harp and gripe, this six game stretch between the Diamondbacks and the Nationals will be the turning point of the Cardinals season.

The Cardinals whipped up on the Nationals, and former Southern Illinois Miner, Tanner Roark 8-1 last night.  Rookie sensation Paul DeJong hit his sixth homer on the season.  He is hitting .277 and slugging .505.

Tommy Pham, Jedd Gyorko, Yadier Molina, and Greg Garcia picked up two hits.  Mike Leake was stellar on the mound, pitching eight innings allowing one run, five hits and striking out four.

Last night’s game is a microcosm of how the Cardinals have played in the recent stretch.  The defense has been much better.  There stupid mistakes on the bases has been fewer.  With Leake being a pitch to contact guy, solid defense behind him, is the key to his success.

I am going to be honest, I have some notes on a yellow legal pad for the Cardinals to become sellers.  I figured 2-4 would be optimistic, as dismal as they have been playing coming into this stretch of the season.

Now I am going to take a lets see how the upcoming series with the Marlins and Mets go.  The Marlins can put runs up on the board, but have suspect pitching.  The Mets are probably the most underachieving team in baseball,  are a train wreck.

I am going to have to get my yellow legal pad out tonight and prepare for the Cardinals to be buyers.  There is one move I think the Cardinals need to make.  It will cause some of you to do flip flops, and some of you will give me an angry icon, when I share this on social media.

With Gio Gonzales, 7-2 – 2.87, going against Michael Wacha  – 4-3 4.50, I am pessimistic of St. Louis picking up another win.

Here is my take on Wacha.  He has had stamina trouble his whole MLB career.  No matter what happens tonight, move him to the bullpen.  He could have closer stuff.

In what was the first of the year a seven inning shortened game with Rosenthal in the 8th and Oh in the ninth, is not the case.  Both have been terrible.  I might have to break out the Charlie Brown cartoon again for both of them.

A month ago, I would not have said this, but Brett Cecil has been the most reliable arm out of the pen as of late.  I would like to pull up the stats since he switched his number to 27, Jhonny Peralta’s old number.  That is when the tide turned for him.

If Wacha needs to be replaced in the rotation, I would go with Luke Weaver or Jordan Swagerty.  Marco Gonzales did not look fully recovered in his only start.   Michael Mayers (pronounced Myers, which is the second pitcher the Redbirds had by that name) has been awful.  He had the disastrous start on ESPN last year against the Dodgers.  In his one appearance out of the pen he gave up one run on one hit and was hit hard.  I know it is a small sample size, but his ERA was lowered to being north of 24.00.

Hopefully I will be writing my recliner GM strategy as a buyer in the next two days.  Matt Scherzer against Carlos Martinez will be a classic tomorrow night, as John Rooney calls it, the game of the world.

Tonight’s lineup for the Cardinals will be posted below.  Matt Carpenter and Stephen Piscotty have the night off.
