Weaver recalled…..Kelly gets the start behind the plate

by Steve Dunford

ST. LOUIS, MO –  In a move that was no surprise, the St. Louis Cardinals recalled Luke Weaver, and send Mike Mayers back down to Memphis.  Mayers was only on the active roster for last nights game, in which he did not pitch.

Weaver did steady work for the Cardinals posting a 1-4 record, with a 5.70 ERA.  The earned run average was inflated by one bad outing last year.

Weaver was up with the big club for a few days earlier in the month.  He worked three scoreless innings in two appearances out of the bullpen.  Weaver had a 9-1 record with a 1.91 ERA at Memphis this season.

The makeup of the Cardinal roster has been called the Memphis Mafia 2.0.  Six of the nine starters tonight, spent time this year with the Redbirds, including the two through five hitters tonight.   Weaver will be throwing to a familiar battery mate this year, as Carson Kelly gets his second start of the season.

Here is tonight’s lineup:

Ron Winemiller on the Benton Rangers summer

by Steve Dunford

I asked  Benton Ranger Basketball Coach Ron Winemiller about what kind of Summer his team had on the hardwood,

He said they played about forty games.   The Rangers faced Goreville, an opponent in the Goreville Invitational in December, they also faced Vandalia, Greenville, Paris and Teutopolis.  They faced Missouri schools of Dexter,  Benton, and Cape Central.

On one trip to the 217, the Rangers were commended for helping a local farmer load a water tank in the back of a farmer’s truck.  The website shared a link of the story from the Benton Gazette.  Below is the link.

Rangers to the Rescue!

Gone will be Timmy Henson, Austin Wills, and Derek Oxford, Henson and Oxford were for year starters, counting Timmy’s freshman year at Thompsonville.   However the five of Gehrig Wynn, Cade Thomas, Hamilton Page, Parker Williams, and Blaine Pankey has played together since Junior High.  I am unsure of his other Seniors, but Coach Winemiller said his seniors will have to log the bulk on the minutes this year, but he was impressed with the growth of the underclassmen.

He said Mt. Carmel, Effingham St. Anthony and T-Town were the best three Illinois teams the Rangers played this summer.

I did not talk about the Southern Illinois to River race, as I talked about the GEC race with Pete Gordon.  I would have the Rangers as an upper division team.

With Blake Dure back, and point guard Will Gibbs transferring from Carrier Mills, I think Harrisburg will be the team to beat in the conference. Since the Bulldogs will be 2A this year,  I would not be one but surprised if Randy Smithpeters makes another trip to Peoria with this team.

Daryl Murphy just reloads every year down at Murphysboro.  Joe Hosman was singing the blues down at Massac County, and ended up 6-4 in the conference, and a .500 record on the season.

Herrin will have its third coach in third years in Benton Native Sayler Shurtz.   They will be pretty young, with a good nucleus.  I can guarantee you this, West Frankfort will win more than one game in the SIRR Ohio this year.  The Redbrids have a very strong junior class coming in.  If I was an opposing team, I would not want to go to Max Morris Gym this season.  There will be a lot of upsets there.

In four months, the Rangers will be tipping it up at the Goreville Tournament.  It does not seem like in four weeks, teams will be under the Friday Night Lights.

Cardinals recall pitcher Mike Mayers from Memphis

Right-hander takes 25-man roster spot created by Wainwright disablement

The St. Louis Cardinals announced prior to this evening’s game that they have recalled right-handed pitcher Mike Mayers from Memphis (AAA) to take the 25-man roster spot that was created yesterday when the team placed right-handed pitcher Adam Wainwright on the 10-day disabled list.

Mayers, 25, will be making his second stint with the Cardinals this season, having logged 4.0 innings in two relief appearances during his call up from June 25 to July 2.

The 6-3, 215-pound Mayers was 5-6 with a 3.49 ERA in his 19 games (15 starts) for Memphis, striking out 76 batters in 85.0 innings pitched. His last four appearances for Memphis have all come in relief, working 5.0 scoreless innings.

Mayers (pronounced My-ers) wears uniform No. 59.

The Cardinals’ 25-man roster continues to get injections of young blood, as 23-year-old Harrison Bader was promoted to MLB duty Tuesday.

The club purchased Bader’s contract in response to another injury to Dexter Fowler, announcing the veteran center fielder was moved to the 10-day disabled list with a left wrist strain.

Fowler left the game in a double switch Monday night.

Bader, a fast-rising 2015 draft pick (3rd round), will become the sixth player to make his Major League debut for the Cardinals this season.

Cardinals Care dedicates Dexter Fowler Field

Press Release from the St. Louis Cardinals

DECATUR, IL –  Today the St. Louis Cardinals, in conjunction with Cardinals Care, the Decatur Park District and Decatur Memorial Hospital, announced the dedication of Dexter Fowler Field at Hess Park in Decatur, Illinois.

Cardinals Team President Bill DeWitt III, was joined at the dedication by Cardinals Vice President of Community Relations & Executive Director of Cardinals Care, Michael Hall; Cardinals Care Director & Youth Baseball Commissioner, Keith Brooks; Decatur Park Board Commissioners Bob Brilley, II (President), Chris Harrison (Vice President), Stacey Young, Jack Kenny and Chris Riley; Decatur Park District Executive Director, Bill Clevenger; Decatur Memorial Hospital President & CEO, Tim Stone and Decatur Mayor Julie Moore. A video message from Dexter Fowler was also shown during the dedication.

The professionally designed field is the result of a six figure investment by Cardinals Care that includes a graded and irrigated playing field, two paved and covered dugouts, bleachers, fencing, and a state-of-the art solar powered scoreboard. The field will play an integral role in teaching Redbird Rookies participants the values of teamwork, integrity, self-esteem, and leadership.

Dexter Fowler Field is the 23rd field dedicated by Cardinals Care since its inception in 1997. Most recently, the Cardinals dedicated Adam Wainwright Field in August, 2016, at Bob Russell Park in Bellefontaine Neighbors, Mo. Earlier this season, Fowler and his wife, Aliya, supported the Cardinals charitable foundation by making a personal financial donation of $100,000 to Cardinals Care in support of the Redbird Rookies program.

This season marks the 14th year of Cardinals Care’s innovative Redbird Rookies program, a free baseball league for kids who otherwise might not have the opportunity to play. In addition to providing all the uniforms, gloves, bats, balls and other equipment needed for each team, Redbird Rookies also provides extensive off-field support in the areas of health, education, mentoring and the cultural arts for each of the nearly 4,500 kids who participate in the program each year.
