The West Frankfort Redbirds were the Cinderella story across Southern Illinois in 2016, turning their fortunes from a  0-9 2015 campaign, to 6-4 in 2016.  They made the playoffs for the first time in several years.  They went up to the 309 area code and gave, Canton who made the final four in Class 4A, all they wanted before falling late 29-15.

The returning starters for this year are Jordan Brewster, Madison Allen, and Zane Uhls on defense, Bradlee Croslin on offense, and Greg Cooper on both sides of the ball.

I asked West Frankfort Coach Brian Beery who has stood out in practice and over the summer, he said,   “We are going to be a young team, with very few returning starters. I feel everyone has shown improvement throughout the summer and throughout practice. Madison Allen has worked hard in the off-season and has set our school Hang Clean record by cleaning 310 pounds. Furthermore, Jordan Brewster and Greg Cooper has shown steady improvement as well.”

The Redbirds will potentially have a very deep backfield.  Coach Berry mentioned that along with Allen and Brewster that he could see some big years out of,  Sam Cooksey, Connor Eaton, Brendan Johnson, Blake Engler and Kyle Hammers.

The Redbirds will be facing the tradition rich Anna-Jonesboro Wildcats this evening at home.  They fell to A-J in week one last season 12-6 on a Saturday night, as the game was moved because of some severe weather in Union County.

The Redbirds were driving deep into A-J territory, and there was just not enough clock left.  I feel the A-J game last year proved the Birds could be competitive and the win over Harrisburg proved they could be a playoff team.

Here is Coach Beery’s thoughts on the Wildcats coming into tonight,   I believe the A-J game will be a very physical game. I expect them to try to control the clock with their offense, while fielding a very well coached and aggressive defense.  We will have to be able to stop their ground game, and take advantage of any part of the field AJ’s defense is unable to defend.  I believe the key for us is to limit the number of turnovers and mental mistakes, if we can do that, it ought to be a great game to watch and be a part of.

Tonight’s game will be a 7:30 p.m. start, moved up from the traditional 7:00 p.m. start.  Tonight’s game is also the WSIL-TV sack for hunger game of the week.  Be sure to bring some non-perishable food items.

Shurtz named new Boys Basketball Coach for the Herrin Tigers

by Steve Dunford

HERRIN, IL –  The voice of the Herrin Tigers, Mike Murphy, broke this late last night.  The Herrin School Board named Benton native Sayler Shurtz as their head basketball coach last night.

Shurtz, spent the last two seasons as an assistant coach to Jacob Emling at Elverado.  In those two years, the fortunes turned at Elkville, going from an 0-25 season two years ago, to a 21-7 season, sharing a South Egyptian Conference title with Meridian and Cobden.

Shurtz also comes from a pedigree of coaches in his family.  His father Rod, was head coach of the Benton Ranger team that finished third in Class A in 1992.  That team was led by Jo Jo Johnson.  His brother Seger has led the Christopher Lady Bearcats to back to back regional titles.

Shurtz replaces Herrin AD, Mike Mooneyham, who came back for a one year second tour of duty after Irv Lukens resigned.  Mooneyham still remains as Athletic Director.

I look forward to talking with Coach Shurtz in this upcoming basketball season.  Coach Mooneyham was always accessible, and that means more than you know in preparing to write about a game.

In some other SIRR-Ohio news, the West Frankfort school board has hired Jory Dial to replace recently retired Richard Glodich as athletic director.  Dial has served as a long time assistant to football coach Brian Beery and served as an assistant to Matt Hampleman last year in girls basketball.

He was also an assistant in boys basketball to Kevin Toney and Dan DeWerff.  I will try to get with Coach Dial soon.

Redbirds finish fourth in the state in 1924

by Steve Dunford

I have a little more information about the daily post looking back in the archives.  I am getting this information from the following website Illinois post season scores.  The link is below.

https://sites.google.com/site/xtmi2000/

The Redbirds defeated Arthur Trout’s Centralia Orphans 20-18 in the West Frankfort Regional final.  According to the IHSA website, Trout was the coach.

They finished fourth in the state, being defeated by the Canton Little Giants in the 3rd place game.  This is ironic because the Redbirds were defeated by Canton in the first round of the playoff last fall in football.

I will share the scores until we get into the 1960’s.  Then you will see feature stories from time to time on the great teams of Southern Illinois.

The scores of the West Frankfort Sectional are below.

West Frankfort

West Frankfort 25-14 Metropolis

Flora 20-17 Marion

Centralia 28-21 Bridgeport
