Sesser-Valier-Waltonville-Woodlawn 1-0 at Edwards County 1-0

by Steve Dunford

The Red Devils in Week one pulled off one of the biggest upsets of the night, by defeating Carmi-White County 27-12 on the road.

With this win, this establishes them as one of the potential  upper division teams in the Black Diamond.  In conversations that I have had with coach John Shadowens, one of the goals of the team is to improve on the 5-5 record of last year.

They make the long trip to Albion tonight to take on the Edwards County Lions, who defeated the Hamilton County Foxes, 21-6 last Friday night.

I am curios how this game will go.  The Lions improved on their record, going 3-6.  When they were in the Little Illini, they were a 1A school playing in a 3A-4A conference.

If the Lions could have at least a 5-4 season, they could be a force one day in the 1A playoffs.

I am going with the Red Devils by 10 in this one tonight.

S-V-W-W pulls huge road upset over one of the BDC favorites, Carmi-White County

by Steve Dunford

CARMI, IL-   The Sesser-Valier-Waltonville-Woodlawn Red Devils went over to Carmi last night as underdogs to the Bulldogs.

The Devils race out to a 21-6  halftime lead and hold on to defeat Carmi-White County 27 to 12,

Three-year starting quarterback Clayton Smith liked throwing to Lukas Gunter last night as the duo combined for 147 yards.

Eli Gunter had two rushing touchdowns for the Devils.

I talked with S-V-W-W coach John Shadowens and he had this to say about last night’s victory, “ It’s always nice to win on opening night, especially on the road against a conference favorite.  Our athletes came through with some big plays in the first half that set the tone.”

The Devils (1-0) will make the long road trip to Albion Friday night to take on the Edwards Co. Lions.  Carmi-White-County (0-1) will be coming to Franklin County in week two, facing the C-Z-R Bearcats.

“I’m on the verge of tears,” said SVW coach Rachel Payne. “I’m so excited. We have a to-do list and it was to take Woodlawn to three. We did, so I was excited.”

The Lady Cardinals found themselves trailing 20-14 in the final set but tied it up (23-23) before the Red Devils rolled off two straight points to close it.

Payne credits her team’s serving as one of the key factors to the Red Devils’ victories in Games 1 and 3. SVW was trailing 11-9 in the third game when Dakota Quinn served eight straight points to put the Red Devils on top, 17-12, after the side-out.

The Sesser-Valier-Waltonville-Woodlawn Red Devils will try to improve on their 5-5 mark last season.  With it being a closed conference, a 5-4 record will get you in the playoffs with 45 playoff points.   They went on the road and fell to Mt. Carmel at the pit last season.

Clayton Smith will be calling the signals for the Devils this year.  Smith has a rocket for an arm and he hit WR Joshua Gunter a lot last season.  Peyton Rock, who missed some time last year because of injuries will be in the backfield again this year for S-V-W-W

The Devils will be on the road at Carmi-White County tonight, who will be one of the top contenders for a Black Diamond Conference Crown.  Coach John Shadowens says that going over there and facing a team that has 15 returning seniors and a first ballot hall of fame coach in Kurt Simon is an understatement for a tough opener.

S-V-W-W over the last few years has been caught right in the middle of being in a conference over the last several years been the have and have not’s.  They have went from 4-5 two years ago, improving to 5-4 last year.  A 6-3 mark would give them a middle of the road seed in class 3A.  With a football enrollment of 488, they would be guaranteed to be in 3A again.  This team has a great opportunity to play November football.

With preseason practices coming to a close, many high school football teams have their eyes set on the regular season and dreams of playoff contention.

Last season, the team made their first playoff appearance in four years, before an early first round exit.

“I think our biggest challenge is us stopping ourselves, and not being able to finish games. Because last year we had problems with that. Some games we weren’t able to finish. We had good leads on teams and we just let it slip. So I think the problem is us holding ourselves against each other,” said Red Devil fullback/linebacker Jayon Malone.

Sesser-Valier’s Nick Marlo, Benton’s Aubrey Hunter recieve NJCAA academic awards

Reece Rutland – Rend Lake College Sports Information

Rend Lake College has nominated 22 student athletes and three teams for their high academic achievement in the 2016-17 year. The National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) will honor the students in upcoming weeks.

Eight different Warrior teams had at least one athlete nominated for their prowess in the classroom. Student athletes earning a GPA (grade point average) of 4.0 on a 4.0 scale are nominated for the NJCAA Pinnacle Award for Academic Excellence, the highest award available. Athletes earning between a 3.80 and 3.99 GPA are nominated for the NJCAA Award for Superior Academic Achievement. The last award is for students earning GPAs between 3.60 and 3.79: the NJCAA Award for Exemplary Academic Achievement.

Aubrey Hunter

The Women’s Softball team led all sports in nominations. They were anchored by a trio of Pinnacle Award nominees in Hillary Ingram (McLeansboro) and Tori Pasley (Bluford). They were followed by teammates Breya Cooper (Henderson, Ky.) with a 3.91 GPA, Aubrey Hunter (Benton) with a 3.87 GPA and Nicole Johnson (Johnston City) with a 3.81 GPA, all nominated for the Superior Award. Hannah Carbonaro (Mt. Vernon) GPA 3.73 and Megan Rudolphi (Mascoutah) GPA 3.7 received Exemplary award nominations.

As a team, softball earned a collective 3.20 GPA, marking their fifth year in a row that the team has been nominated as an All-Academic Team.  The NJCAA recognizes the team with the highest overall GPA for their sport as the Academic Team of the Year. To qualify, teams must have a combined GPA above 3.0.

Warrior Volleyball also had a strong showing with four members making the cut. Dana Rubenacker (Dahlgren), Danielle Sitzes (Cisne) and Alexandria Kubiak (Nashville), all three finishing the year with perfect 4.0 for Pinnacle nominations. Ryann French (Woodlawn) earned a 3.62 GPA for an Exemplary nomination.

As a squad, the Volleyball crew notched a collective 3.17 GPA for a team nomination.

Women’s Golf also had a pair of perfects in Taylor Aldridge (Eldorado) and Morgan Wilson (Effingham) with 4.0s. Marion Debove (Belloy-en-France) had a 3.76 GPA, good for an Exemplary nomination. The team also rounded out group honors with a 3.19 GPA.

Nick Marlo

Nick Marlo (Sesser) with the Warrior Basketball team finished the year at 4.0 for a Pinnacle nomination. He was joined in individual honors by teammate Lucas Wilson (Mt. Vernon) with a 3.78 GPA for Exemplary consideration.

Pinnacle nominations are rounded out by Women Tennis player Ashley West (Salem)

Both Men’s Golf and Baseball had two nominated for individual honors.

For golf, Kyler Spencer (Nashville) had a 3.9 GPA and Sean Scott (Waltonville) ha d a 3.89 GPA to earn them both Superior award consideration.

Baseball is represented by Zachary Zarifian (Beach Park) with a 3.69 and Ian Walters (Paduach, Ky.) with a 3.62 for Exemplary nominations.  And for Womens Basektball, Michaela O’Neal (Bloomington) concludes individual honors on behalf of Women’s Basketball. She earned a 3.71 GPA for an Exemplary nomination.
