Lula Faye Midgett – Marion, IL

Lula Faye Midgett, age 87, of Marion, IL, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family at 6:45 p.m. on Saturday, May 26, 2018 in Hurricane Creek Assisted Living Center of Herrin, IL.
She was born at home on Monday, July 7, 1930 in rural Williamson County, IL, near the Lake of Egypt, the daughter of Clarence Blanchard and Mary Louise “Molly” (Parks) Jones.
Lula was united in marriage to Shirley Taylor Midgett on Friday, September 27, 1957 in Creal Springs, IL and together they shared nearly 55 years of marriage until his death on Sunday, July 29, 2012.
She spent her life managing her home and seeing to the needs of her family. Early in her life time she worked for several years at Sangamo Electric.
Lula was a member of the First Baptist Church of Creal Springs where she was actively involved, until her health declined. She loved to sing as a soloist and in the choir serving her Lord.  After her husband passed away she had been attending at the LivingStone Community Church of Marion.
In her spare time she enjoyed spending time outdoors working in her flowers, and garden, baking and she loved to play bingo.
Her family was a very important part of her life and was always interested in their many activities, especially those of her grandchildren. The memories created will now be cherished by those she leaves behind.
She is survived by her daughter and  son-in-law, Darlene F. and William G. “Billy” Seeger of Marion; four sons and daughters-in-law, Clarence Midgett and friend, Marlene Nash of Dupo, IL, James Paul and Andrea Midgett of Marion, Mickey Gene and June Midgett of St. James, MO and Jackie Dale and Cathy Frey of Marion, IL; nine grandchildren, William Chad Seeger, Ashley Faye Seeger, C. W. Allen, Brookellen Kay Midgett, Paul Michael Midgett, Serena Kathryn Midgett, Joshua Taylor Midgett, Jared Frey and Nickolas Dale Frey; six great-grandchildren, Joshia Midgett, Jazmalyn Midgett, Landon William Taylor Seeger, Cameron James Midgett, Colton Taylor Midgett and Trinity Midgett; two sisters-in-law, Lenawee Midgett of Tacoma, WA and Joy Jones of Goreville, IL, other extended family, and many friends.
She was preceded in death by her parent, husband; four sisters, Ruth Rendleman, Ina Robertson, Imogene Hudgens and Lucille Jones who passed away as an infant and also 2 brothers, Carl Jackie Jones and Blanchard Jones.
Arrangements for Lula Faye Midgett have been entrusted to Wilson-McReynolds Funeral Home, 900 N. Court St., Marion.
The visitation will be on Wednesday, May 31st from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
The funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, June 1, 2018 at Wilson-McReynolds Funeral Home with Pastor Joel Grider presiding.
Interment will follow next to her husband in McKinney Chapel Cemetery near the Lake of Egypt in Williamson County.

Charles “Chuck” L. Jatsko – Benton, IL

Charles “Chuck” L. Jatsko, 89, of Benton, IL,  passed away at 3:40 p.m., on Monday, May 28, 2018, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Mount Vernon, IL.

He was born on October 2, 1928, to Eugene and Anna Jatsko in Huntington (Long Island), New York. Chuck met and married Brenda Poore and she precedes him in death. There wasn’t a day that went by that Chuck didn’t miss Brenda and couldn’t wait to be reunited with her in Heaven.  He enjoyed owning and operating Chuck’s Auto Body for many years, playing golf, and traveling. Chuck loved Italian food, but most of all, he loved spending time with his family and friends.

Chuck is survived by his daughter, Diane Simpson (Scott Simpson) of Benton, IL, his step-daughter, Buffy King Welch (Shad Welch) of Tompkinsville, KY; one sister, Elaine Hyder of Myrtle Beach, SC; ten grandchildren, Brendan Simpson of Benton, IL, Thomas Simpson of Greeley, CO, Andrew Simpson of Benton, IL, Jason Jatsko of Cincinnati, OH, Matt Jatsko of San Clemente, CA, Cody Sissom of DuQuoin, IL, Angelina Detomsi of Stonefort, IL, Tyler Welch of Tompkinsville, KY, Brittani Welch Brown of Tompkinsville, KY, and Briley Welch of Tompkinsville, KY; four great-grandchildren, Liam, Caroline, Penelope, and Ryker, and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Brenda (Poore) Jatsko, parents, Eugene and Anna Jatsko, one son, Danny Jatsko, one daughter, Linda Jatsko DeTomsi, and seven brothers and sisters.

Chuck resided at Heritage Woods of Benton until his death at Good Samaritan Hospital.  The family would like to thank all the wonderful caregivers at Heritage Woods of Benton for all of their love and compassion.  Also,  thank you to all the wonderful physicians and nurses at Good Samaritan Hospital that cared for him prior to his untimely death. 

Services have been entrusted to Pate Funeral Home, 301 S. Main St, Benton, IL.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., on Thursday, May 31, 2018,  at Pate Funeral Home, Benton, IL

Funeral Service will be held at 10:00 a.m., on Friday, June 1, 2018, at Pate Funeral Home.  Burial will follow the services, and Chuck will be laid to rest at Masonic and Oddfellows Cemetery, Benton, IL., Military rites will be performed by the American Legion Post 280 and VFW Post 2671.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital and CASA of Franklin county, and will be accepted at the funeral home.

Charlotte Patricia Kanady – West Frankfort, IL

Charlotte Patricia (Peggy) Kanady, 87, passed away peacefully May 26, 2018, in West Frankfort, IL. Charlotte was born October 23, 1930, in Chicago, Illinois to Matthew and Marya (Misztas) Jasinski.

Charlotte co-owned and managed a strawberry crop U-Pick business in Galatia, and co-owned an Italian restaurant and bar as the primary cook/ foodservice manager in Benton. Charlotte spent her later years living in Buckner as a homemaker.

She married Robert Thomas Wilkins in 1948 (Chicago), had 4 children, lived in Chicago and Southern California, and was widowed in 1959. She married Earl Kanady in 1960, had one child, and in 1967 they moved the family to Earl’s hometown, (New) Shawneetown, Illinois.

Charlotte was preceded in death by her parents; husbands; brother, Richard Jasinski, Richard’s wife, Gerry and their children, Robin and Richard Jr.; Daughter-in-law, Carol Wilkins; niece, Kimberly Mariarz, and two great grandchildren.

Survivors include her brother, Clyde (Virginia) Jasinski and sister, Georgian Sinn; children, Robert Gary Wilkins, Patrick (Linda) Wilkins, Barbara Dineen- Naas (Lawrence Naas), Donald (Dawn) Wilkins, Earl (Robin) Kanady; grandchildren, Brian Wilkins, Noel and York Adams; Bobby Wilkins, Johnny and Crissy Wilkins, Heather Taylor-Naas and Timothy Dineen III, Josh and John Cambron; Jamie Lynn Kanady and Jason Maxfield; many great grandchildren, nieces and nephews, and her little dog, Sasha.

Services have been entrusted to Pate Funeral Home, 301 South Main Street, Benton, IL.

Visitation will be held at 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 30, 2018, at Pate Funeral Home, Benton IL.

Funeral Service will be held at 12:00 p.m. with Father Urban Osuji officiating.

Burial will follow services at Mulkeytown Cemetery in Mulkeytown, IL.

Memorial Contributions may be made to Residential Hospice and will be accepted at the funeral home.

Larry Dale Flowers-Mulkeytown

Larry Dale Flowers, age 85, passed away on May 24, 2018 at Parkway Manor in Marion.

He was born on June 13, 1932 to Dale and Irene (Brown) in Mulkeytown.

On November 23, 1950, he married his red-headed girl, Vera L. Hiller in Christopher.  They shared over 66 years of marriage until her death on May 28, 2017.

Larry was active in the community and served on the Zeigler Fire and Police Department Auxiliary, was a member of the Christopher Saddle Club, Zeigler Saddle Club, Zeigler Masonic Lodge and was an active Shriner.  He announced many horse shows throughout Southern Illinois in the 1970’s and 1980’s and enjoyed watching his young sons participate in horse shows.  He was a member of the First Christian Church in Christopher where he served many years as an elder and board chairman.

Larry supported his young family by working at Allen’s and Country Set as a sewing machine mechanic.  He was the proud owner of Larry’s Trailer Sales in Zeigler serving the area for over 50 years.  He and his family also own Flowers Farms.  Larry and Vera enjoyed traveling all over the world and he loved the hunting trips with his friends.

He leaves behind his son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Gayla Flowers, grandchildren, Lacy Holt, Larry A. Flowers, Courtney, Chad and Chase Flowers, great grandson A.J. Holt, daughter–in-law Pricilla Flowers, brother and sister-in-law Kenneth and Carolyn Flowers, several nieces and nephews as well as many business and personal friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Vera Flowers, and son Larry Allen Flowers.

Graveside services will be on Saturday May 26, 2018 at 11:00 AM at the Mulkeytown Cemetery with brother Denny Bush officiating.  Visitation will be on Friday May 25, 2018 from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM and on Saturday May 26, 2018 from 9:00 AM until 10:30 AM at the Gilbert Funeral Home in Christopher.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Shriner’s Hospital for Children and will be accepted at the funeral home.

Lillie Adkins – Benton, IL

Lillie Adkins, 94, passed away at 7:45 AM, Thursday, May 24th, 2018, at her home in Benton, Illinois. The first child of Marion and Lelia (Martin) Stephens, Lillie was born August 5, 1923 in Harveyton, Kentucky.  She married James Adkins in Fleming, Kentucky on December 23, 1939 and over the years they were blessed with eight healthy children.

Mr. and Mrs. Adkins moved to Benton from Kentucky in October 1961 and settled into the community with their active children. While Mr. Adkins was busy working at Freeman Coal Orient #5 mine and later at Inland Steel Coal in Sesser, Mrs. Adkins focused her time on her children as they actively participated in sports and activities sponsored by their schools and community.

In addition to Lillie’s eight children she was blessed with fourteen grandchildren, twenty-three great grandchildren, and four great, great grandchildren. Spending time with each was a great pleasure for her and her mothering instincts extended not only to her own children but to their friends as well, as she offered food, love, encouragement and sage advice to all. She most recently delighted in spending a weekend with her newest six-month-old great grandson and having a four-generation photo taken.

Lillie was an avid reader and was often seen visiting the Benton Public Library. She was also an enthusiast of all televised sports, with a keen interest in watching basketball, especially following the career of her favorite star and announcer, Doug Collins.

Survivors include five daughters, Mary Lou Shockley, West Frankfort, Brenda Doty (Tod) and Vickie Willis (Bruce), both from Benton, Sharon Merwin, Dallas, Texas, and Rhonda Cockrum (Curtis), Oak Ridge, Tennessee.  Sons, Richard Adkins (Kathy), Middletown, Ohio, James Adkins (Deborah), Tuscaloosa, Alabama and Roger Adkins (Glenna), London, Kentucky.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James Adkins, her parents, Marion and Lelia Stephens, three brothers, John, Gordon, and Robert Stephens, and sons-in-law, Jack Shockley and Davis Merwin.

The family extends special thanks and much gratitude to Leotta Burbank, an incredible Care Angel whose ever present pleasing personality and warmth brought comfort, peace, joy, and friendship to our mom and family.   To Rachael Janello, mom’s physical therapist whose kindness, understanding, warmth, and laughter led to an endearing friendship.  Thanks also to the following Care Angels who have helped and supported us over the last few months:  Emily Harris, Ruth Zeboski, Kendra Murphy, Gayla Porritt, and Janice Biggs. A special thanks also to Hospice of Southern Illinois whose support and guidance brought comfort and peace to our family.

Funeral services will be at Pate Funeral Home, 301 South Main St, Benton, Illinois on Saturday at 11:00 AM.  We welcome all who wish to attend.

LaVera L. Spilman – Benton, IL

LaVera L. Spilman, 62, of Benton passed away May 20, 2018 at her home.

She was born in Christopher, IL on July 9, 1955, the daughter of John & Pauline (Piazza) Spilman.

She worked for as a registered nurse at Heartland Regional Medical Center until failing health.

LaVera is survived by two sons, Damian Dawson and wife Kelly, of Benton and Derek Dawson, of Benton; four grandchildren Mayci, Cameron, Makenzie and Taylor; three brothers, Merv Spilman, John Spilman and Ronnie Corbin.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Paul DeGroff.

Graveside funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, May 24th at the Masonic & Oddfellows Cemetery in Benton. There will be no visitation and those attending the service are requested to meet at the cemetery.

Michael Forest Heath – Marion, IL

Michael Forest Heath, age 71, of Marion, IL, formerly of the Pontiac, IL area, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family at 8:23 p.m. on Sunday, May 20, 2018 in Heartland Regional Medical Center of Marion.
He was born on Wednesday, July 31, 1946 in Pontiac, IL, the son of Forest Milton and Marie Vera (Pate) Heath.
Michael attended school in Pontiac and was a graduate of Pontiac Township High School Class of 1964. Following graduation he continued his education at Illinois State University of Normal, IL where he received his Bachelor Degree in Education. All during his high school and college years he was involved with the school choirs.
During his college years Michael answered the call of this nation by serving in the Army Reserves and after his period of faithful was honorably discharged.
He was united in marriage to Maureen Diane Pike on Saturday, June 15, 1968, in the Methodist Church of McDowell, IL and together they shared over 32 years of marriage until her death on Saturday, November 25, 2000.
Michael’s working career early in his lifetime was with Interlake Steel in Pontiac for several years. He and Maureen moved from Pontiac to Marion in 1980, and soon he began working for Allen Industries of Herrin, IL. He later became Director of Payroll and Disbursements at Southern Illinois University of Carbondale, IL and remained there for 20 plus years until his retirement around 2002. After his retirement he still wanted to be active helping others and began working at the White Medical Center in Carmi, IL with their Human Resource Department. He later became Director of the Franklin County Regional Economic Development Corporation in Benton, IL. He also helped open and manage Shawnee Winery and worked for Jackson Hewitt Tax Service both in Vienna, IL. He later began working as Director for Good Samaritan Ministries in Carbondale, IL until his retirement in 2017.
Michael was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church of Marion. He also was a former member and Past President of the Marion Kiwanis Club.
In his spare time he enjoyed bargain hunting. He was always interested in tools and machinery, what he called “Gadgets,” and could tell you what all they could do. He also enjoyed watching movies, especially westerns, listening to all kinds of music and was an excellent trivia player, knowing a little bit about everything. He was a very social person and loved being around people and enjoyed the “Wednesday Afternoon” and “Friday Morning” breakfast groups. His family was a very important part of his life and was always interested in their many activities. The memories created will now be cherished by those he leaves behind.
He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Megan M. and James K. Mitchell of Overland, MO; sister and brother-in-law, Kathryn K. and James Sutter of Fairbury, IL; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Robert T. “Terry” and Sunny Pike of Marion; long time special friend, Alice Rix of Marion, several nieces and nephews, other extended family, and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife.

The visitation will be on Thursday, May 24th from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

Alice “Faye” Aaron – West City, IL

Mrs. Alice “Faye” Aaron, age 79, of West City; passed away Monday, May 21, 2018 at the Helia Healthcare of Benton.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, May 24, 2018 in the Leffler Funeral Home of Benton, with Rev. Jim Jenkel officiating.  Burial will be in the Masonic & Odd Fellows Cemetery of Benton.  Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. to the funeral hour at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday at the Leffler Funeral Home. 

Mrs. Aaron was born on September 21, 1938 in Edgar County, Illinois, the daughter of Arthur Lee Dunn and Serena Lavera (Baker) Dunn. She married Lavern “Moon” Aaron on June 1, 1956, and he preceded her in death on February 17, 1996.

Faye was the owner and operator of Faye’s Fashion Draperies of West City.  She was a former pharmacist assistant with the Kimmel-Chaplain Pharmacy of Benton.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Benton.

Faye enjoyed reading, doing word searches, sewing, traveling, spending time with her great-grandchildren, and spending time with her friend Katherine Mandrell.

Mrs. Aaron is survived by her three children: Karla Genisio and husband Steve of Benton, Cary Aaron of West City, and Craig Aaron and wife Polly of Youngsville, LA; six grandchildren: Paige Aaron, Kayla Aaron, Nathan Genisio and wife Jenna, Stephanie Stayton and Matt Stubblefield, Avery Potter, and Abbie Potter; six great-grandchildren: Gavin Genisio, Jaxon Genisio, Kayson Genisio, Ashlyn Stayton, Gunner Stubblefield, and Kynsleigh Stubblefield; a brother Steve Dunn of Ehrhardt, SC; a sister-in-law Phyllis Dunn of Paris, IL; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; a brother Wayne Dunn; and a sister Carolyn Fitzjarrald.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, and will be accepted at the funeral home.

Linda Lou King-Royalton, IL

Linda Lou King, 79, of Royalton, IL passed away on Saturday May 19, 2018 at Hearland Regional Medical Center in Marion.

She was born November 12, 1938 in Royalton to Homer and Evelyn (Hedges) Howell. 

Survivors include her children Vickie (Marty) Smith of Herrin and Marty King of Royalton; 6 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; brothers and sisters Jerry Howell of Royalton, Doris Stewart of Royalton and Ronnie (Linda) Howell of Hurst.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one grandson Michael Todd Brower, and one brother-in-law Bob Stewart.

Graveside services will be Thursday May 24, 2018 at 3:00 PM at Blairsville Cemetery.

Phyllis Jean Sager – Marion, IL

Phyllis Jean Sager, age 88, of Marion, IL, passed away peacefully with her family by her side, at 8:18 a.m. on Friday, May 18, 2018 at home in Marion.
She was born on Tuesday, August 6, 1929 in Marion, the daughter of Barney Floyd and Eulala Inez (Poteete) Russell.
Phyllis grew up and attended school in Marion and was a graduate of Marion High School class of 1947.
Phyllis was a member of the Second Baptist Church and a member of the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary both of Marion,
She was united in marriage to W. Leroy Sager, on Saturday, October 7, 1961 in the Zion United Church of Christ in Marion.
Phyllis worked for many years and retired in 1989 after working for Electrolux Vacuum Sweeper Company in Marion for thirty-two years.
She enjoyed traveling and camping, visiting almost every state including Alaska and Hawaii. She especially enjoyed the southern states, Stone Mountain, Georgia, and Branson. She always kept busy and was always interested in the activities of her family, especially those of her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She enjoyed the many times they shared together and the memories that were created will now be cherished by those she leaves behind.
She is survived by her husband, Leroy Sager of Marion; her children, Lisa Weaver and partner, Ron Rogers of Marion and Tom McDowell of Carbondale, IL; step children, Dennis Sager of Vincennes, IN and Karen Ulrich of Sumner, IL; three grandchildren, Jeremy Weaver and wife, Allison, Lesley Decker and husband, Ryan, and Emily Hall and husband, Kevin; three step grandchildren, Dave Ulrich and wife Deon, Matthew Sager, and Lesley Beard and husband, Spencer; nine great-grandchildren; sister, LeAnn Ashley and husband, Herb of Paducah, KY and brother, Ron Russell and wife, Fran of Paducah, KY; other extended family, and many friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents and son, Ronald Lee “Fuzz” McDowell.
Arrangements for Phyllis J. Sager have been entrusted to Wilson-McReynolds Funeral Home, 900 N. Court St., Marion.
The visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 22nd  at the funeral home.
