Jessie Merkel-Tamaroa, IL

 

Jessie Merkel, 77, of Tamaroa passed away on November 24, 2018. 

He was born on November 27, 1940 in Perry County, IL to Sam and Lenoir (Murry) Merkel.  He married Joyce Ann (Miller) Merkel on June 18, 1960 and she preceded him in death on February 25, 2010. He married Kay Davis on March 30, 2011 and she survives of DuQuoin, IL.

He is also survived by his children Stacy Merkel of Tamaroa and Kevin Merkel of Tamaroa; grandchildren Calley Cobb, Jonathon Merkel, and Dillion Merkel; great grandchildren Joselyn Merkel and Jordin Cobb; one sister Virginia Gostowski of Benton; and one brother Delmar Merkel of Washington, IL. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and five brothers Alan Merkel, Ogle Merkel, Freddie Merkel, John Merkel, and Henry Merkel.

Funeral services will be on Thursday November 29, 2018 at 11:00 AM at the Brayfield-Gilbert Funeral Home in Sesser with Rev. Ray Baggott officiating.  Visitation will be on Thursday from 10:00 AM until the time of the service at 11:00 AM.  Burial will be at Paradise Prairie Cemetery in Tamaroa.

Doris M. Choisser – Benton, IL

Doris M. Choisser, 91, of Benton passed away Friday morning, November 23, 2018 in Benton.

She was born in Benton, IL on February 3, 1927, the daughter of Frank Edward & Gladys Marie (Williams) Seibert.

She married Harry Myron “Sparky” Choisser on October 13, 1945 in Marion, IL, and he preceded her in death on January 16, 2009.

Mrs. Choisser was a member of the North Benton Baptist Church. She first placed her faith in Jesus Christ in March of 1955 when she asked Him to forgive her of her sins and to come into her life. Because of the Lord’s promises of salvation she has now been reunited with loved ones in eternity and has finally met Jesus face-to-face.

Mrs. Choisser is survived by her  children, Randy Choisser and wife Alice of Ewing, Scott Choisser  and wife Brenda of Ewing and Phillip Choisser and wife Michelle of Logan, Alabama; grandchildren, Barry Choisser and wife Denise, Bryan Choisser and wife Jennifer, Nicci Haney and husband Eric, T.J. Choisser, Seth Choisser, Nathan Choisser and wife Cristan, Kelsey Denny and husband Daniel, and Alyssa Choisser;  great-grandchildren, Kayla Hermann and husband Kurt, Elijah Haney, Abigail and Amelia and Alaina Choisser, Hayley Griffen, Carson Choisser, Tallie Choisser, Andrew, Harrison and Emberlee Choisser, and Trace Choisser; brother, Ralph Seibert of Benton, sister Shirley Tennison and husband William of Benton, and sister-in-law, Mary Lou Jones of Benton.

Mrs. Choisser was preceded in death by her parents, by her husband, by a sister, Winifred Tennison, a brother William Eugene Seibert, brother-in-law Robert Jones, and sister-in-laws Betty Storey and Louise Seibert.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, November 27th at the Morton & Johnston Funeral Home in Benton with Rev. Josh Crisp officiating. Private graveside services will follow. Visitation will be from 4 p.m.. to 7 p.m. Monday at the Morton & Johnston Funeral Home.

Shirley Harland – Christopher, IL

Shirley Marilyn Harland, 89, of Christopher, IL., died Thursday, November 22, 2018, at 11:35 a.m. at her home. Shirley was born on July 12, 1929, in Mulkeytown to Lester A. and Effie G. (Jones) Gregory. She graduated from Christopher High School in 1948.

She married Charles K. Harland on June 10, 1948, in Piggott, Arkansas. He preceded her in death on October 29, 1992. Survivors include her children – Charles S. Harland of Mulkeytown, Kathryn C. (Dean) Pearce of Centralia, and Debra D. Gerdes of Sandwich – one grandson Michael E. (Ally) Gerdes of Bloomington. She also leaves three step-grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, and six great-great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews, and one special cousin who was like a brother, Keith (Elizabeth) Gammon of Eagle, Idaho.

She was a faithful member of the First Christian Church, Christopher, for the past several years after being a member of Du Quoin First Christian Church for more than 50 years. Shirley was a farm wife with numerous homemaking skills including gardening, canning, baking, sewing, and most notably quilting. Hobbies included reading, crossword puzzles, stamp collecting, and fishing.

Her funeral service will be 11 a.m., Saturday, December 1, 2018, at Gilbert Funeral Home in Christopher with Rev. Daniel Ison officiating. Burial will be in Ward Cemetery, Mulkeytown. A visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., Saturday, December 1, 2018, at the Gilbert Funeral Home in Christopher. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First Christian Church, Christopher.

Mary Ruth Cook – Ewing, IL

Heaven gained an Angel on Sunday evening, November 18, 2018 when Mary Ruth Cook, 81, of Ewing, IL passed away at Helia HealthCare in Benton, IL.

She was born in Jefferson County, IL on February 4, 1937, the daughter of Edgar & Fern (Fields) Holman.

She married Gary Cook on November 25, 1995.

Mrs. Cook was a Charter Member of the Benton First Free Will Baptist Church. She was “Mema” to her grandkids who were her life. She loved and supported them in everything they did and will always be remembered for her amazing sugar cookies.

Mrs. Cook is survived by her husband Gary Cook of Ewing; two daughters, Pam Tomer and husband Frank, of Cape Coral, FL and Becky Reed and husband Mike, of Benton; grandchildren Clint Tomer and wife Caryn, of Edwardsville, IL, Amber Price and husband Ben, of St. Louis, Amanda Lewis and husband Aaron, of Benton, Michelle Potter and husband Jacob, of Benton, Il; great-grandchildren Eli and Hannah Lewis, Riley, Jackson and Dylan Potter; step-son Eric Cook and wife Delia, of Florida; step-daughters Heather Habseiger, of St. Louis and Jackie Cook, of Tennessee; sister Joyce Gilbert and husband Billy, of Effingham, IL

Mrs. Cook was preceded in death by her parents, by two brothers, Russell and Stanley Holman and by sisters-Louise Williams, Doris Douglas and Sharon Burton.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, November 23rd at Morton & Johnston Funeral Home in Benton with Rev. Larry D. Clyatt officiating. Burial will be in Williams Chapel Cemetery in Ewing. Visitation will be after 11 a.m. on Friday at Morton & Johnston Funeral Home.

Charlette Risley-Sesser, IL

Charlette Risley, 86, of Sesser passed away on Tuesday November 20, 2018.

She was born on September 14, 1932 in Sligo, MO to Wilmer and Marie (Broyles) Smith.  She married Norman Risley on December 16, 1950 and he preceded her in death on January 24, 1990.

She is survived by her children Ida Fay (Bill) Harriss of DuQuoin and Norman Dwayne Risley of Sesser; two grandchildren Angela (Adrian) Rigsbee of Durham, NC and Chris Harriss of Belleville; one great granddaughter Ava London Harriss; one sister Lavern Talbert of Rushville, IL.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and one sister Hazel Saladine.

She was a homemaker.

Funeral services will be on Wednesday November 21, 2018 at 1:00 PM at the Brayfield-Gilbert Funeral Home in Sesser with Brother Mark Miller officiating.  Visitation will be on Wednesday from 11:00 AM until the time of the service at 1:00 PM at the funeral home. Jack Dean Smothers — Logan, Illinois

Mr. Jackie “Jack” Dean Smothers, age 85, of Logan, passed away at 9:44 p.m. Thursday, November 15, 2018 at the Mt. Vernon Healthcare Center.

Funeral Services will be held at 12:00 noon Monday, November 19, 2018 at the Logan Church of God, with Rev. Mike Mayberry officiating, and Rev. Rick Fowler assisting. Burial with Military Honors will be in the Logan Church of God Cemetery. Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon Monday at the Logan Church of God.

The Leffler Funeral Home, of Benton, is in charge of the arrangements.

Jack was born on May 24, 1933 in Logan, IL, the son of Miles Smothers and Bertha (Moore) Smothers. He married the former Thelma Ruby Eads on October 22, 1953, and she survives.

Mr. Smothers proudly served his country in the U.S. Marines during the Korean War.

He was a member of the Logan Church of God, where he formerly served as a Sunday School Teacher, and served on the Pastor’s Council.

His working career consisted being a truck driver with Star Trucking, a coal miner, a former jailer at the Franklin County Jail, and as a bus driver. He was also a member of the Teamsters Union.

He enjoyed gardening, carpentry, camping, and especially enjoyed spending time with his family.

Survivors include his wife of 65 years Thelma Smothers of Logan; his three children: Loretta Rice and husband Steve of Logan, Jack D. Smothers of Logan, and Lisa Morse and husband Zandle and his son Tyler of Buncombe, IL; five grandchildren: Melissa (Coons) Boukezzoula and husband Naoufel, James Eston Pense, Paula (Coons) Arpasi and husband Thomas, Daniel Rice, Chloe Morse; three great-grandchildren: Mia Arpasi, Kaven and Aubrie Pense; a brother Delmas Smothers of Greenfield, IN; a sister Anna Mae Wilson of Logan; and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Smothers was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter Connie Coons; five sisters: Alma McCormick, Lola McCormick, Mary “Mag” Leneve, Lillian Willett, and Vivian Smothers; four brothers: Larry Smothers, Joe Smothers, Everett Smothers, and Artie Gene Smothers.

James M. Vise – Benton, IL

James M. Vise, 92, of Benton passed away Thursday afternoon, November 15, 2018 in Benton.

He was born in Macedonia, IL on June 17, 1926, the son of Evan H. & Goldie (Moore) Vise.

He married Clara Lu (Keener) on July 24, 1955 at the First Christian Church in Benton.

Mr. Vise served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was a member of the First Christian Church in Benton.

Mr. Vise is survived by his wife, Clara Lu Vise, of Benton; daughters Linda Maddox, and husband Keith, of Chesterfield, MO and Susan Brookins, and husband Ron, of Marietta, GA; five grandchildren, Emily (Maddox) Wissmann, and husband Taylor, Lindsey (Maddox) Gross and husband Ryan, Whitney (Brookins) Pulliam, and husband Christopher, Tyler Brookins and Chandler Brookins; four great-grandchildren Koa and Hudson Wissmann and Cohen and Maevry Gross.

Mr. Vise was preceded in death by his parents and by two brothers, Harvey and Hosea Vise.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, November 19, 2018 at the First Christian Church in Benton with Pastor Kurt Sanders officiating. Burial with Military Rites conducted by the Benton American Legion & VFW Posts and National Guard Honor Squad will be in the Masonic & Oddfellows Cemetery in Benton. Visitation will be after 11 a.m. on Monday at the Church.

Richard E. Glover – Benton, IL

Richard E. Glover, 76, of Benton, passed away on Thursday, November 15, 2018, at SSM Health DePaul Hospital, in St. Louis, MO., surrounded by his loving family.

Richard was a lifelong resident of Benton, born on March 10, 1942, the son of James and Jamima (Irby) Glover. Richard graduated from Benton High School in 1960. He joined the United States Navy in 1961. Richard was a proud American, proud to have served his country, proud of the armed forces and loved the American flag.  Richard was a retired coal miner.  He was known for his witty sense of humor.

He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Cheryl (Hottensen), daughter Amanda Rone (Jason), son Daniel Glover (Marci) and two grandchildren, Keegan and Kinley Glover who are the light of his life, sisters Dixie Simmons, Janetta Marteney and sister-in-law Francis Glover, several nieces and nephews, many great friends and grand dog Coco Lee.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents; two half brothers Jimmy and Jack Glover and one half sister Peggy Glover.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Pate Funeral Home, 301 S. Main St., Benton, IL.

Visitation will be held Sunday, November 18, 2018, from 5:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. & Monday, November 19, 2018, 12:00 p.m. – 1:00 p.m. at Pate Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, November 19, 2018, 1:00 p.m., at Pate Funeral Home, with the Rev. Mark Minor, officiating.

Burial will follow services at Masonic and Odd Fellows Cemetery with military rites by the Benton American Legion Post 280, VFW Post 2671 and the United States Navy Honors.

Larry B. Townley – Thompsonville, IL

Larry B. Townley, 59, of Thompsonville, IL passed away Tuesday, November 13, 2018 in Deaconess Hospital in Evansville, Indiana.

Larry was born in Chicago, IL on November 13, 1959, the son of Jack L. & Helen (Adams) Townley. He married Deloris Beyreis on July 16, 2017 and she survives.

Mr. Townley served in the U.S. Marine Corps for 20 Years retiring in 2000. He served as Federal Agent U.S. Border Patrol. He taught EMT courses. He liked woodworking. He enjoyed feeding the birds.

Mr. Townley is survived by his wife, Deloris Beyreis-Townley, of Thompsonville, parents Jack and Helen Townley, of Ewing, IL, two children, Stephanie Nunez and husband Christopher, of Yuma, AZ and Jesse Townley and wife Kristina, of Yuma, AZ; three granddaughters, Samantha, Chloe and Allison; one brother Jack Kevin Townley and wife Jill, of Ewing; four step-children and Fiorella Bryan, the mother of his two children.

 Mr. Townley was preceded in death by a brother, Jeffery Townley.

Donnie Bennett — Sesser, IL

 

Donnie Bennett, 75, of Sesser passed away on November 12, 2018.

He was born on December 8, 1942 in Benton, IL to Wathie and Loney (Mocaby) Bennett.  He married Diane (Erwin) Bennett on October 29, 1963 and she survives of Sesser.

He is also survived by his children Donna (Mark) Mays of Sesser, Sherry Arro of Sesser, Cathy (David) Marlo of Sesser and Steve Bennett of Herrin; nine grandchildren Elijah Mays, Caleb Mays, Silas Mays, Emery Arro, Riley Arro, Joseph Marlo, Rachel Marlo, Nicholas Marlo, and Paolina Marlo; three sisters Sharon Reichert of Herrin, Yvonne Drew of Tamms, and Myrl Conner of Sesser; one brother Dale Bennett of Ringold, GA.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters Bernice Skurat and Mildred Wisnewski, and two brothers James “Cotton” Bennett and Wathie “Preach” Bennett.

He was a coal miner and a member of the UMWA and also had worked for the City of Sesser.  He was also a member of the Sesser Church of God and had served his country in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War.

Funeral services will be on Friday November 16, 2018 at 1:00 PM at the Brayfield-Gilbert Funeral Home in Sesser with Brother Tim Melvin officiating.  Visitation will be on Friday from 11:00 AM until the time of the service at 1:00 PM.  Burial will be at Maple Hill Cemetery in Sesser.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Illinois Veteran’s Home in Anna.  Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
