FOWLER LOOKS FORWARD TO PROGRESS OF ALEXANDER-CAIRO PORT DISTRICT

HARRISBURG, IL – Alexander County is another small step closer to moving forward with economic progress, thanks to the continued work of State Sen. Dale Fowler (R-Harrisburg). In cooperation with Sen. Fowler, the Governor today made four appointments to the Alexander-Cairo Port District.

“I want to thank the Governor for his quick action to nominate members after our early consultation with local leaders,” Fowler said. “I look forward to working with the new board in order to help make the Port Authority a reality. It’s going to take a collaborative effort to get Cairo and Alexander County’s economic engine ‘fired up’ again.”

April 7 marked another “page turn” as the Governor nominated four members to reconstitute the Alexander-Cairo Port District. The board was created in 2010 by the previous administration, but has been largely ignored; it appears the board has not met in at least five years.

The Port District is made up of seven appointed members, four from the Governor’s Office, two from Alexander County, and one from the City of Cairo. Members must be residents of the Alexander County and will serve without compensation.

Lawrence Klein, Mark Glaab, retired Judge Steve Spoemer, and Jack Guetterman will serve as the Governor’s appointees.

Lawrence Klein, a life-long resident of Cairo, said, “Many thanks to Senator Dale Fowler and Governor Rauner for the appointment to the Alexander-Cairo Port District. I firmly believe that our team will work diligently to bring wealth and prosperity back to the region.”

Mr. Glabb also commented, “Thanks to the renewed efforts of our leadership in Springfield, it seems that there is a much brighter future ahead for our community. The Port District will be a critical part of helping to develop the river bank into a modern river freight facility.”

Severin Supports Property Tax Relief Bill for Senior’s and Veterans

Press release from State Representative Dave Severin

SPRINGFIELD, IL –  State Representative Dave Severin (R-Benton) has signed on as a co-sponsor to House Bill 156. The bill will provide property tax relief to senior citizens and veterans by making changes to the Illinois Income Tax Act.

Rep. Severin cited the unusually high property taxes seen in Illinois compared to surrounding states and said the legislature needs to relieve some of this burden on the older groups.

“Illinois has some of the highest property taxes in the nation,” Severin said. “These taxes can be crippling for many people, especially senior citizens living on fixed incomes. As lawmakers this is the least we can do for our seniors and veterans.”

HB 156 would increase homestead exemption for senior citizens from $5,000 to $6,000. The bill also provides that the homestead exemption will provide additional tax relief to veterans over the age of 75.

Interim Treasurer Pam Smith said the county has about $393,000 in the bank after receiving a $124,000 income tax check from the state and $143,000 in receipts from the circuit clerk’s office. However, with claims of $217,000 to be paid in a couple of weeks, it will be difficult to meet the next payroll of about $400,000,

WASHINGTON, DC (Alex Swoyer, The Washington Times. Please click on the link to read the full story. Here is an excerpt) The Senate confirmed Judge Neil Gorsuch to the Supreme Court Friday morning, thrilling conservatives and angering liberals who expect him to be in the mold of the late Justice Antonin Scalia, whose seat he will take. The 54-45 vote was also a victory for President Trump, who last year had campaigned on his ability to pick good justices conservatives could rally behind. Three Democrats back the judge as did all 51 Republicans who were in the chamber voting. Friday’s vote came a day after Democrats staged a filibuster to block the judge, offering a long — and occasionally conflicting — litany of complaints.

Bost Statement on US Airstrikes in Syria

Washington, DC – U.S. Representative Mike Bost (R-Murphysboro) issued the following statement after US airstrikes were conducted in Syria:

“The use of chemical weapons is a war crime. Plain and simple. I support President Trump’s decision to send a clear message to the Assad regime that inhumane acts like these are beyond the pale and will not be tolerated. We must remain vigilant and continue working closely with our allies to defend our national security interests in the volatile environment in Syria. I share the President’s sentiment that we pray for the victims and ask for God’s wisdom in navigating this dangerous situation.
