Tuesday Night Basketball-1/3/17

Steve Dunford

My goal is to at least have a box score or a story from every girls or boys High School varsity game in the county.  Every day is a learning experience for me.  Speed and timeliness will come in time.

I might not be the best sports writer.  News is something new to me.  I want to keep everyone informed of the things around Franklin County to the best of my ability.

VIENNA 63  SESSER-VALIER 50

SESSER – Watching Ben Daine on film for the EHT, he is one of the most exciting and explosive players in the BDC west.  With Brandon Casey on the inside, Vienna could push for the conference crown.

Sesser-Valier (5-8)(1-2) travels to Trico (0-2)(4-9) on Satruday, who took it on the chin against Christopher on Tuesday.

Tigers fall short to arch rival Bearcats in consecutive games…

Steve Dunford

016GALATIA-For the second game in a row the Thompsonville Tigers faced their conference rivals and neighbors the Galatia Bearcats, and both times fell to defeat.

Last night it was a see saw battle and The Tigers had a three rim in and out in the final seconds to fall to defeat 47-44.

I know I say this time and time again but free throws and turnovers hurt the Tigers again.  They took much better care of the basketball the last three quarters.  They coughed the ball up 10 times in the first quarter but only ended up with 19 on the night.  They were 6/14 from the free throw line and the Bearcats were 10/15.

Here is what Tiger Coach Pete Gordon had to say about last night’s game,   ” We still had too many turnovers.  The fact we had a decent look at a three to win was a positive.  Free Throws, breakdowns, and just an overall understanding of how to attack a zone is disappointing.  I am still happy that my players play hard and compete.  We just have to still learn from our errors and try to improve.  We will continue to get better and I know we can compete with anyone on our schedule and we need to find ways to win some of these games.”

Galatia Coach Rod Wallace described it as a very good defensive game by both teams.

Cory Wilce led the Tigers with 10 points on the night and led with three steals.  Corbin Fitch added nine points, Tyson Kessler eight and led the Tigers with five assists.  Jared Payne also added eight points.  Anthoney Darge led the Tigers with five rebounds and four blocks.

For Galatia, Luke Lawrence led all scorers on the night with 15 points, Kody Matthews added 11 points with five steals, Austin Stevens scored nine and Will Pulliam won the battle of the boards with 12 rebounds on the night.

The Bearcats improve to 4-11 and 3-2 in the GEC.   The Tigers fall to 3-7 and 1-2 in the GEC.

T’ville will be at home for the first time in a month on Friday as play the Hardin County Cougars in a GEC match up. Both games between the two last year were dandies, and I expect another on on Friday night.  I smell this young ball club going on a run soon.

Galatia will be at home on Friday playing Agape Christian out of Marion in a non conference game.

Happy Birthday to Coach Gordon’s wife Sarah.  I hope it was a great one.

Here is a special weather statement issued by the National Weather Service in Paducah KY for Franklin and surrounding counties :

…FIRST ACCUMULATING SNOW OF THE SEASON POSSIBLE THURSDAY…

With Arctic air already in place across the region, an upper-level storm system will produce a swath of light snow, as it swings through our region Thursday.

The initial band of light snow may reach the Interstate 64 corridor of southern Illinois just prior to daybreak Thursday, but the bulk of the accumulating snowfall is expected in the morning hours. 1 to 2 inches of snow is possible across the Interstate 64 corridor of southern Illinois and southwest Indiana.

The snow is expected to taper off quickly from west to east Thursday afternoon. Farther south across the region, a half inch or less is expected, and much of the area may only see a few periods of flurries.

At this time, considerable uncertainty exists with this storm system. On the high end, the potential exists for light accumulations across the entire area, with narrow bands of enhanced snowfall. On the low end, a very minor adjustment could result in nothing but flurries across the area.

With the cold air in place, any accumulations would likely create travel difficulties. Please stay tuned for the latest forecasts and statements on this potential winter storm system from the National Weather Service in Paducah, Kentucky.

Follow franklincounty-news.com for advisory updates and possible cancellations throughout this possible winter weather event.

GOP drops plan to overhaul ethics rules after Trump trashes it

AP Photo

AP Photo

Republicans’ first hardball move of the new Congress fizzled Tuesday as lawmakers were forced to drop their attempt to weaken the House’s independent ethics watchdog, bowing to widespread criticism including from President-elect Donald Trump, who told them they had more important things to work on. Within a span of 15 hours, the House GOP held a secret vote to bring the Office of Congressional Ethics under control of the lawmakers themselves, then reversed that just minutes before the chamber convened. Democrats complained that the rules adopted Tuesday were still unfair, even with GOP concession on ethics, because lawmakers will be punished for live-streaming from the floor — a long-standing violation, but one that will now earn members a fine. The GOP powered the new rules through on a 234-193 vote. Please click on the link to read the rest of the Story from the Washington Times

Duckworth sworn in, questions some Trump appointments

New U.S. Sen. Tammy Duckworth, D-Ill., said after being sworn in Tuesday that she’s hoping the Donald Trump administration will

have a “significant” public works plan, but she has questions about some of Trump’s Cabinet nominees. In a conference call with reporters, Duckworth said she looks forward to “rolling up my sleeves and getting to work,” and she hopes the incoming Republican administration will forward a plan for “significant infrastructure development.” Illinois, she said, needs such a plan for projects from lock-and-dam improvements on the Mississippi River to work on public school buildings to “getting lead out of our water supply.” Lead has been a problem in some cities, including Chicago and Galesburg. She said other issues important to her include small business, manufacturing and agriculture. “Of course, I will always be focused on supporting our veterans and our military men and women and their families,” said Duckworth, of Hoffman Estates, who lost both legs when her helicopter was shot down in Iraq and who later led the Illinois Department of Veterans Affairs.
