Severin Honors the City of Orient for Its 100th Birthday

ORIENT, IL – Monday night, State Representative Dave Severin (R-Benton) presented a House Certificate to Orient city officials honoring the city’s 100th birthday. Rep. Severin presented the certificate to Orient’s Mayor Pete Witkewiz at city hall prior to the City Council’s monthly meeting.

“It is incredible to think that Orient, Illinois is celebrating its 100th birthday,” Rep. Severin said. “The small Southern Illinois town has been a great addition to Franklin County over the years and it has been an honor for me to represent its constituents in the General Assembly.

The City of Orient was incorporated on September 11th 1917. It was formed in connection to Orient #1 coal mine which at its peak production was the top producing coal mine in the world. Mayor Witkewiz expressed gratitude for the recognition the city received from Rep. Severin.

“It was very thoughtful of the Representative to honor the City of Orient for its land mark birthday” Mayor Witkewiz said, “It is a small town but we are very proud of the long history our small community has had in Southern Illinois.”

Governor cuts ribbon on new General Mills distribution center

LEED silver certification anticipated for 1.5 million-square-foot Wilmington facility

WILMINGTON-IL  — Gov. Bruce Rauner joined area officials at a ribbon cutting today to open a new 1.5 million-square-foot distribution center for General Mills. The facility, located at the rapidly developing RidgePort Logistics Center in Wilmington, could employ up to 150 people when it is fully operational.

Headquartered in Minneapolis, General Mills is a worldwide company that is home to such well-known brands as Cheerios, Betty Crocker, Pillsbury, Haagen-Dazs, Annie’s, and Cascadian Farm. Its new distribution center in Illinois will ship General Mills products to destinations across the U.S.

“Illinois is the nation’s logistics and distribution hub,” Rauner said. “As a business person, I can see why General Mills has chosen our central location, our unmatched transportation systems and, most important, our pool of highly skilled Illinois workers. Seeing this facility open is testimony to our state’s central role in the distribution of goods to every part of the nation.”

“The Wilmington customer service facility will be a key addition and a critical location for the General Mills distribution network,” said Mike Nordstrom, General Mills vice president for Global Workplace Solutions. “From this location, we will deliver top-selling cereals, snacks and other products to customers across America.

“We’re also proud that this facility will continue our company’s strong commitment to treating the world with care, as we anticipate that the building will achieve LEED Silver certification,” Nordstrom said.

“What a tremendous boost this will be for the Will and Grundy county areas both for jobs and the local economies,” said state Sen. Sue Rezin, R-Morris, who invited Gov. Rauner to Wilmington. “Our area has some of the most talented and knowledgeable people in the world when it comes to logistics. I hope we can build off this momentum and other companies see the great things that are happening in the area and choose to locate here as well.”

The new General Mills center is part of the sprawling 2,500-acre RidgePort Logistics Center that is being developed by Elion Partners about 40 miles southwest of Chicago. The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) is providing $113 million in multimodal improvements involving highway (I-55) and rail infrastructure.

“An additional feature of RidgePort Logistics Center, apart from its infrastructure and logistical location, is servicing the trucking profession,” said Michael Stellino, managing director of development for Elion Partners. “By having a mixed-use logistics park, we are responding to the needs of the truck drivers, employees and tenants of the park such as General Mills.”

Located in Will County, RidgePort Logistics Center is the largest planned, rail-served industrial park in the Chicago market with 30.6 million square feet of potential development. About 5.4 million square feet have been developed to date, and 810,000 additional square feet are under construction.

Share your story of The Rivalry

SPRINGFIELD, IL – For months, visitors to the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum have been sharing their personal stories and favorite memories from the historic rivalry between the St. Louis Cardinals and Chicago Cubs.

Now it’s your turn.
The presidential library, home to the special exhibit “Cubs vs. Cardinals: The Rivalry” is inviting everyone to share their rivalry stories on social media.
Maybe you met your future husband at a game or learned how to keep score from your grandfather. Maybe you attended a game with your best friends in high school or got to see your favorite player hit a home run.
Now’s your chance to share that moment on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram with the hashtag #TheRivalry. At the end of November, we’ll choose two submissions – one about the Cubs and one about the Cardinals – for special prizes.
A classic World Series is underway. It may not include the Cardinals or the Cubs, but it’s a reminder of the way baseball connects to fans on a personal level.
“Cubs vs. Cardinals: The Rivalry” features dozens of artifacts and hundreds of photos from one of the greatest rivalries in sports, a conflict that has divided Illinois for more than 125 years.
The exhibit also offers visitors the chance to write their favorite memories on sticky notes and post them for others to read. Among our favorites are:
  • “My boys turning the corner and seeing the iconic red sign at Wrigley for the first time.”
  • “My tooth fell out when Andy Van Slyke hit a home run.”
  • “Seeing Ozzie Smith do backflips across the outfield and seeing the AB Clydesdales pull the wagon around the outfield. Summer ’86.”
  • “After the Cubs won, I ran and gave my dad a hug. He was so happy.”

Frank Pomeroy and his wife Sheri. Frank is the pastor of the Sutherland Springs FBC, who lost a daughter among the 26 murdered.

Southern Baptists ministering in the wake of what some have called the deadliest church shooting in U.S. history say they’ve witnessed “God at work” despite the 26 dead and some 20 others wounded at First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs, Texas.

Local pastors and field personnel with the Southern Baptists of Texas Convention (SBTC) began providing grief counseling within hours of the shooting at First Baptist’s morning worship service Nov. 5. Southern Baptist Convention President Steve Gaines and SBC Executive Committee President Frank S. Page plan to arrive in Sutherland Springs Nov. 7 to offer prayer and encouragement. SBTC executive director Jim Richards arrived today (Nov. 6).

On behalf of the SBC, the North American Mission Board has offered to cover funeral expenses for all shooting victims in coordination with the SBTC, NAMB confirmed.

Franklin County Farm Bureau News: How HSE affects local farmers

From Gay Bowlin, Franklin County Farm Bureau President

BENTON, IL – Governor Rauner signed the HSE into effect to allow farmers to haul grain and/or livestock due to crop conditions. All three common forms of weight restriction – gross, axle and registered – are addressed. In each case, the permit can allow up to a maximum of 10 percent over the standard weight restriction.

Gay Bowlin

There is no cost for the HSE permit. However, you will need to have documents in EACH truck from IDOT during this time. The HSE ruling also indicates that a permit is needed for county routes, district roads and municipal streets – I have called Franklin County and talked to Matt Barnett and Mike Rolla has indicated that Franklin County is not requiring a county permit at this time for emergency harvest.

The townships that I have spoken with – Benton and Tyrone – indicate that they will not require a written permit to run on their roads.   The most important part of this is that YOU CANNOT RUN ON ANY INTERSTATE HIGHWAYS WHILE OVERWEIGHT.

To get the IDOT permit it is necessary to go to their website and go to the oversize and overweight site and create a log in. A permit will then be issued to you – remember that each truck/plate must have a written permit at least from IDOT. This includes any truck that is hauling grain – not just a farm plate.

Each truck will be required to have three documents:

  1. The permit (printed or electronic)
  2. A copy of form OPER 993*; and (*special vehicle movement permit provisions)
  3.  A copy of the Governor’s declaration

If you have any questions please feel free to contact me at 435-3616 and I will do my best to walk you through the process.

We are still looking for Silent Auction Items for our Annual Meeting. The proceeds will benefit Ag in the Classroom. If you have an item that you would like to donate please contact our office at 435-3616 and we can make arrangements to pick it up. Thank you for your consideration and this is a tax deductible donation.

Also, it is time again to ask for donations for our annual “Harvest of Help” – we collect money then purchase food for each of the nine food pantries in Franklin County. Every dollar helps! This is a tax deductible donation and checks need to be made to Franklin County Farm Bureau Foundation. Over the nine years that we have been doing the Harvest of Help we have donated in excess of $62,000 to the food pantries. We are very proud of the support that we have received from everyone for this program.

It is time again to order pecans, oranges and grapefruit.

Pecans will be $10.00 for a jumbo 1 lb bag of  ½ shelled and $7.00 for a 12 oz bag of choc covered pecans.

Oranges – a 40 lb box is $35.00 and 20 lb box is $25.00

Grapefruit – 40 lb box is $30.00 and 20 lb box is $20.00

(we will not have Tangelos this year at all – sorry for the inconvenience.)

Orders must be received by November 22 for fruit and they will be in before Christmas. Pecans will be in before Thanksgiving. Call 435-3616 now to get your order in.

Remember we are farmers working together. If we can help let us know.
