With the U.S. Supreme Court now having heard two cases concerning how political maps are drawn, advocates for bringing change to Illinois say there seems to be a light at the end of the gerrymandering tunnel.

Williamson County officials execute disaster declaration, confirm tornado damage

WILLIAMSON COUNTY OFFICIALS EXECUTE DISASTER DECLARATION

(MARION-ILLINOIS) — On Wednesday morning, Williamson County Board Chairman Jim Marlow signed a disaster declaration upon the recommendation of Williamson County Emergency Management Agency Director Kelly Urhahn. The Williamson County EMA has confirmed that a tornado developed in the County on 4/3/2018 and caused significate damage to local homes and businesses. No injuries or fatalities have been reported. The execution of the disaster declaration officially recognizes the event as a disaster and activates Williamson County’s Emergency Operations Plan.

The following disaster response efforts are ongoing at this time:

– Teams from Williamson County EMA, assisted by personnel from Franklin County Emergency Management Agency are conducting a detailed field damage assessment of all residential and business structures that were affected.

– Teams from the National Weather Service are conducting a detailed assessment to determine the path and strength of the tornado.

– Officials from the American Red Cross will be deployed to reach out to citizens affected to aid in recovery efforts. Home Depot out of Marion has graciously donated supplies to assist local residents.

Williamson County officials are asking citizens to report significant structural damage or any assistance needs the Williamson County Sheriff’s Office Dispatch Center at (618) 997-6541.

Elizabeth Annete Carter – West Frankfort, IL

Elizabeth Annette Carter, 69, of West Frankfort, Illinois, passed away Tuesday April 3, 2018 in Franklin Hospital – Benton, Illinois at 8:05a.m.

Annette was born March 15, 1949 in Herrin, Illinois to Robert and Anna (Thomas) Melvin.

She was preceded in death by her son, Larry Scott Marvel and parents.

Annette is survived by her husband, Willie Carter; five sons: Steve (Angela) Marvel, Jeff Marvel, Josh (Sara) Marvel, Todd (Brook) Carter; and Matt Carter; brother, Chris (Gina) Melvin; sisters, Roberta (Mike) McLaren and Pat (Jim) Clark; grandchildren:  Adam, Andie, Macaibe, Stevey, Levi, Abbey, Evan, Sierra, and Lauren; great grandchild, Everly.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday April 7, 2018 at the Union Funeral Home – West Frankfort, Illinois. Visitation will be held from 12 noon until the time of the service at 2 p.m.

Preschool For All grant covering Pre-K screenings at RLCF Children’s Center

INA, Ill. – Parents of three- and four-year-old children can take advantage of free pre-kindergarten screenings through the “Preschool For All” grant at the Rend Lake College Foundation Children’s Center (RLCFCC).

The free screenings are sponsored by the Illinois State Board of Education grant during the month of May. Parents may contact the RLCFCC now to schedule a screening on Monday, May 14 through Wednesday, May 16.

To qualify for free screenings, children should be three years old by Sept. 1, 2018. Parents will need to provide proof of income and bring the child’s certified birth certificate. Potty training is not a requirement for entrance.

Results from the developmental screening will be shared with parents the same day. Each child will also have a portfolio to track their educational progress throughout the school year.

Qualified children can receive free morning pre-kindergarten class at the RLCFCC, running from 8 – 11:30 a.m. Monday through Friday. All day care is also available for a $12 fee per day.

Pre-kindergarten classes at the RLCFCC include free field trips for children and parents, parent education opportunities, parent events, and attendance at Kindergarten Boot Camp to help relieve fears prior to entering kindergarten. A Pre-Kindergarten Graduation ceremony will be held at the end of the year for children entering kindergarten.

Mardell Fern “Ginger” Gingles — Benton, IL

Mardell Fern “Ginger” Gingles, age 83, of Benton; passed away Monday, April 2, 2018 at her home.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, April 7, 2018 in the Leffler Funeral Home, with Rev. Steven Flach officiating. Burial will be in the Masonic & Odd Fellows Cemetery of Benton. Visitation will be from 12:00 noon to 1:00 p.m. Saturday at the Leffler Funeral Home.

Mardell Fern Gingles was born on May 13, 1934 in Summerfield, OK, the daughter of Jeff David Parks and Elsie (Dunn) Parks. She married Joseph Gingles, JR. on July 14, 1969, and he preceded her in death on February 26, 2011

Mrs. Gingles and her late husband formerly owned and operated Gingles 1 Bar in Glenview, IL, and Gingles 2 Bar in Christopher.

She enjoyed being a homemaker and taking care of her family. She liked eating out especially at Red Lobster and loved to watch old classic Western movies on television.

She and her late husband formerly attended the Faith Baptist Church of Benton.

Mrs. Gingles is survived by her daughter Jacqueline Rohr of Elk Grove, IL.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; a daughter Karol Rohr; and a son Mark Rohr.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Faith Baptist Church and will be accepted at the funeral home.

SIU Board of Trustees to consider shifting some state funds from Carbondale to Edwardsville

Pritzker blasts Rauner’s private school scholarship plan as ‘really bad idea’

Gov. Bruce Rauner touted the historic education bill as his “biggest accomplishment” last year, but on Tuesday Democratic challenger J.B. Pritzker vowed to kill one of its key components — a private school scholarship tax credit that Pritzker dubbed “a back-door school voucher program” and “a really bad idea.”
