Kentucky man arrested for home invasion in Thompsonville

On Sunday, May 6, 2018 at 1:16 a.m. deputies with the Franklin County Sheriff’s Department responded to a residence in rural Thompsonville after dispatch had received a 911 call reporting an armed home invasion.

The armed individual was an ex-boyfriend of the reporting party.  After a brief stand-off the armed individual was disarmed by another male inside the residence.  The suspect was taken into custody by Deputies and an AK47 style rifle was recovered.  There is no evidence the firearm was actually discharged during the incident, even though several people were threatened with it, including responding Deputies.

Taken into custody was Lucas C. Boyd age 24 of Fort Campbell, Kentucky.  Boyd is being held on tentative charges of home invasion with a firearm (Class X felony), aggravated unlawful use of a weapon (Class 4 felony), aggravated assault with a deadly weapon (Class A misdemeanor), and resisting arrest (Class A misdemeanor).  Boyd is in the Franklin County Jail and is being held without bond pending review by the State’s Attorney’s Office and the setting of bond by the Circuit Court.

Jared Kern broke the school outdoor record in the shot put and volunteer assistant coach DeAnna Price recorded the second-longest hammer throw all-time on a day full of highlights for the Salukis at the Billy Hayes Invitational, hosted by Indiana University.

Kern threw 66′-10.50″ (20.38m) Friday to break Josh Freeman‘s 2015 school record of 66′-1.50″. Kern was the top collegiate finisher and took second to 2016 Olympic silver medalist Joe Kovacs, who won with a toss of 68’-00.25″. Kern’s toss, meanwhile, moves him up to third regionally and nationally.

In the women’s hammer throw, Saluki alum and volunteer assistant coach DeAnna Pricecontinued to etch her name in the world record books, as she launched the second-longest hammer throw all-time at 249′-2″ (75.96m).

Shauniece O’Neal set a PR in the hammer for the second-straight meet, as she threw 192′-4″ (58.62m) to finish third. The freshman thrower from Florissant, Mo. native came into Friday’s meet with 12 throws that exceeded the USATF Junior Championships qualifying standard of 54m and it is the third-best mark in the Missouri Valley Conference this season. Alexis Roberson also set a PR at 186′-10″ (75.96m) to finish fifth and later notched a lifetime-best in the discus at 150′-8″ (45.93m) to place fourth.

Nate Dyer won the men’s hammer throw for the second-straight meet to make it a clean sweep for the Salukis. Dyer threw a lifetime-best 196′-7″ (59.91m) to win the event and remains ranked second in the MVC heading into the conference meet.

Bri’Anna Branch won the 200 meter dash with a season-best time of 23.98. Her mark gives Southern two of the top-3 fastest 200m times in the conference this season, as Tyjuana Easonis second at 23.93 and Branch is now third heading into the 2018 MVC Outdoor Championships. Shafiqua Maloney also notched a season-best in the event as she ran 24.37 to take third.

Branch and Maloney helped SIU’s 4×100 relay team to its second-straight win. The quartet of Genesis Ewell, Maloney, Eason and Branch ran 45.33 to win in a six-team field that included teams from Indiana, Indiana State and Butler. It is the third-fastest time in school history and gives the foursome two of the top-three marks in school history.

The Salukis will next compete at the 2018 MVC Outdoor Championships, hosted by Indiana State University. The three-day conference championship begins on Friday, May 11 and goes through May 13. The meet will once again be streamed on The Valley on ESPN3.

Illinois residents still struggling with poverty

Illinois is still seeing high poverty rates.

An annual report from the Heartland Alliance’s shows that 1.6 million Illinois residents are considered to be living in poverty as of 2016. That’s still higher than pre-recession levels, and according to the U.S. Census Bureau, it’s about 14 percent of the state’s total population.

Matthew 13:45

What is your most prized possession?  What did it cost you?  How valuable is it to you?

In Matthew 13 and verse 45, Jesus spins a great tale about values, “The kingdom of heaven is like a merchant looking for fine pearls.  When he found one of great value, he went away and sold everything he had and bought it.”

What is there in your life that’s worthy of your whole hearted devotion?  What is so valuable to you that you’d sell everything you have to obtain it?  This is how valuable Jesus says the kingdom of heaven is.

Knowing God in a deep, personal way is worth giving 100% of yourself in pursuit of that relationship.  Conversely, God is pursuing you by having already given all He has to win you.

You are, collectively and individually, God’s pearl of great value.  He loves you greatly and has paid an infinite price to know you personally.

Play this game with the confidence that comes from being supremely loved.  That is a place of great security and freedom.

Pastor Rick Warren: Why Can’t I Stop Doing Wrong?

Why Can’t I Stop Doing Wrong?

05-07-18-Hard-Questions-Why-Cant-I-Stop-Doing-Wrong_preview

“If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us” (1 John 1:8 NIV).

Sin always involves self-deception. At the moment you’re sinning, you’re deceiving yourself because you think that what you’re doing will actually produce better results than what God has already told you to do.

To stop defeating yourself, you must stop deceiving yourself. You’ve got to take an honest look at your life, face the truth, and deal with the issues. Is there something in your life that you’re pretending isn’t a problem? Maybe an addiction? Something that you’re thinking is no big deal, when it really is a big deal?

It really doesn’t matter whether you’re addicted to heroin or abusing a credit card, whether you’re viewing pornography or reading a crude novel. You’re using these things to escape something painful, or something hard to deal with. But you’re not going to find healing until you first acknowledge the root of your problem.

You don’t have to hit rock bottom before you really change. There are wake-up calls going on all around you right now, if you’ll only listen to them. But if you don’t, you’ll continue on a path toward destruction.

You don’t have to go that way! You can acknowledge the root of the issue and ask God to help you deal with it once and for all.

I’ve asked the professional counselors in our church, “What’s the biggest problem you encounter?” They say over and over, “People wait too long before they ask for help. Then it’s almost impossible to turn around.” There will be warning signs all over the place in a marriage, and then all of a sudden the husband or wife walks out. Far too many people stay in denial and wait until it’s too late, and so they go through unnecessary pain.

The Bible says, “If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us” (1 John 1:8 NIV).

What hard questions do you need to be asking yourself about the sin in your life? What warning signs have you been ignoring?

If you want healing, acknowledge the root of your problem, and face the truth about you. God is ready, willing and wanting to bring healing to your life.

Talk It Over

  • How might pride keep you from acknowledging the root of your problems?
  • Why do we often think we know better than God what is best for us?
  • What do you think God wants you to do after you face the truth about the problems in your life?

Give hope, prayer, and encouragement below. Post a comment & talk about it.
