Medical Assistant program application deadline extended

INA, Ill. – Students interested in Rend Lake College’s Medical Assistant program have an extended application and testing deadline before classes start this fall. The new deadline is set for Sunday, July 15.

Two new testing dates have also been set for the summer. The program’s entrance examination, called the Psychological Service Bureau (PSB) exam, is a five-part, computerized, timed test that is a requirement for the application process. Students interested in the Medical Assistant program can test at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 19 or 9 a.m. Wednesday, July 11.

The PSB test costs $30 and is due at the time of registration, which must be done in person at the Testing Center, located in the Administration Building.

RLC’s Medical Assistant program includes a degree and certificate options to give students exactly what they need to join this fast-growing industry. The Associate in Applied Science degree prepares students to work under the supervision of physicians in offices, clinics, and other medical facilities. These individuals perform both administrative duties and clinical tasks – ranging from scheduling appointments to taking and recording vital signs.

Students who complete the degree program can sit for the national certification examination and also earn the Medical Assistant credential, which consists of 36 credit hours over two semesters, plus on-the-job practicum.

Graduates will find the medical assistant industry to be growing at a rapid rate. By 2026, the U.S. Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) states there will be an additional 183,900 jobs across the country, a growth of 29 percent. The BLS also reports “most medical assistants have postsecondary education.”

For those looking to continue their education past RLC, graduates can transfer seamlessly to either Central Methodist University or Southern Illinois University Carbondale via articulation agreements with RLC. These students will begin a four-year degree in junior standing at the university level.

RLC’s Medical Assistant program was recently accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs. To learn more about the program or to enroll, contact RLC’s Allied Health Division at 618-437-5321, Ext. 1769 or email ah_info@rlc.edu.

A Word for Today: Welcome the King

By Pastor Jimmy Russell

WELCOME THE KING

READ 2 CHRONICLES 29:1 THROUGH 32:33; JOHN 12:1–19

Crowds poured into Jerusalem for the Passover Feast. In addition to the sacrifices and observances, people sought to renew friendships with those from other regions and marveled at the grand scale of the temple. At this particular Passover, a new excitement stirred the masses. Many heard the stories of incredible miracles performed by Jesus and felt He was the one who would free them from the bondage of Roman rule.

They took palm branches and went out to meet him, shouting,

“Hosanna!”

“Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!”

“Blessed is the king of Israel!” (John 12:13).

Many of the people in the crowd that welcomed Jesus that day turned against Him and joined the call for His crucifixion. However, a group of Jesus’ followers stayed true to Him. After the Crucifixion, Resurrection, and infilling of the Holy Spirit, they faithfully proclaimed the good news.

Thought for Today: Jesus wants to be welcomed as Lord and Savior by everyone.

CARBONDALE, Ill. — The Southern Illinois men’s golf program will hold its third-annual Dinner & Auction on Aug. 2, with a Golf Scramble the following day. The public is invited to attend.

The Dinner & Auction will take place on Thursday at Pinch Penny Pub Beer Garden in Carbondale from 6-9 p.m. The cost is $20 and includes dinner and one complimentary soft drink or draft beer. In addition to a silent auction, there will be a live auction to purchase Saluki golfers for the scramble. The deadline for on-line registration is July 27.

DINNER & AUCTION REGISTRATION

On Friday, beginning with a shotgun start at 1 p.m. at Crab Orchard Golf Club in Carterville, the six-person scramble will include lunch and the opportunity to purchase a Saluki golfer to play on your team. The price is $150 for an individual or $900 for a sixsome. Sponsorship opportunities are available. The entry deadline is July 27 and is limited to the first 22 teams.

“This event is truly the lifeblood of our program,” said SIU head coach Justin Fetcho. “We have been able to improve our program every year through the support of this event.  We don’t have home events where you can buy tickets to come see us play.  This is your opportunity to come out and have some fun, but also support our student-athletes.”

Fetcho said the event has grown each year, and even those who are unable to attend can still support the program through being a hole sponsor or by donating an item for use in the auction.

“The support of the SIU community has allowed us to have the resources to be successful,” he said. “Without the success of this event, we most likely wouldn’t have won an MVC Championship or advanced to the NCAA postseason in two of the last three seasons. The money generated from this event goes directly to our golf program and it helps us with scheduling some of the best competition across the country as well as having the best resources at our hands through technology and equipment.”
