SIU Hall-of-Famer Gwen Berry breaks American hammer throw record

BERRY BREAKS AMERICAN HAMMER THROW RECORD

Six days after DeAnna Price set the American hammer throw record, Saluki Hall of Famer Gwen Berry reclaimed her record with her opening throw at a meet in Chorzow, Poland on Friday, June 8.

Berry threw 255′-2″ (77.78m) on her first attempt Wednesday to take back her American hammer throw record. Berry set the American hammer throw record on May 10, 2017 with her toss of 251′-10″(76.77m), which Price broke on June 2, 2018 with her toss of 254′-9″ (77.65m) at the Iron Wood Throws Classic in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho.

The 2011 SIU alumna defeated Poland’s Anita Wlodarcyzk in the process. Wlodarcyzk, who won the gold medal in the event at the 2016 Olympics and holds the world record at 272′-3″ (82.98m), hadn’t lost in the hammer throw in nearly four years prior to this year but has now had to settle for second at back-to-back meets.

Berry was a three-time All-American and four-time MVC Champion during her collegiate career at Southern Illinois. She was named the 2011 USTFCCCA Midwest Region Field Athlete of the Year and was inducted into the Saluki Hall of Fame in 2017. She finished 14th in the hammer at the 2016 Olympics and currently resides and trains in Oxford, Mississippi.

Martinez is never in control as Cardinals lose to Reds

The more that Cardinals ace Carlos Martinez struggles with his rhythm and his control, the more it seems that it might have been a good idea to take on one more minor-league start as he rehabilitated from the strained lat that put him on the disabled list.

Saluki Men’s Golf to host Dinner, Auction and Golf Scramble, Aug. 2-3

CARBONDALE, Ill. — The Southern Illinois men’s golf program will hold its third-annual Dinner & Auction on Aug. 2, with a Golf Scramble the following day. The public is invited to attend.

The Dinner & Auction will take place on Thursday at Pinch Penny Pub Beer Garden in Carbondale from 6-9 p.m. The cost is $20 and includes dinner and one complimentary soft drink or draft beer. In addition to a silent auction, there will be a live auction to purchase Saluki golfers for the scramble. The deadline for on-line registration is July 27.

DINNER & AUCTION REGISTRATION

On Friday, beginning with a shotgun start at 1 p.m. at Crab Orchard Golf Club in Carterville, the six-person scramble will include lunch and the opportunity to purchase a Saluki golfer to play on your team. The price is $150 for an individual or $900 for a sixsome. Sponsorship opportunities are available. The entry deadline is July 27 and is limited to the first 22 teams.

“This event is truly the lifeblood of our program,” said SIU head coach Justin Fetcho. “We have been able to improve our program every year through the support of this event.  We don’t have home events where you can buy tickets to come see us play.  This is your opportunity to come out and have some fun, but also support our student-athletes.”

Fetcho said the event has grown each year, and even those who are unable to attend can still support the program through being a hole sponsor or by donating an item for use in the auction.

“The support of the SIU community has allowed us to have the resources to be successful,” he said. “Without the success of this event, we most likely wouldn’t have won an MVC Championship or advanced to the NCAA postseason in two of the last three seasons. The money generated from this event goes directly to our golf program and it helps us with scheduling some of the best competition across the country as well as having the best resources at our hands through technology and equipment.”
