CARBONDALE, Ill. — Southern Illinois athletic director Jerry Kill announced on Monday that Air Force Academy’s Liz Jarnigan has been named the department’s senior woman administrator. In addition to her SWA responsibilities, Jarnigan will oversee all aspects of internal operations for Saluki Athletics.

Jarnigan served as the Falcons’ senior woman administrator for two years and was a member of the athletic department’s senior leadership team. She was the primary advisor and liaison to the athletic director on all matters concerning intercollegiate women’s programs as it related to equity and gender issues. She also had sports supervision responsibilities for both men’s and women’s programs.

“This is the most important hire I’ve made in a long time,” Kill said. “She has the ability to solve complicated issues. She has experience dealing with Title IX issues at San Jose State and was a huge factor in their turnaround. She’s much more qualified to be an athletic director than I am, but I think the two of us working together will be a great team.”

Prior to Air Force, Jarnigan worked for eight years at San Jose State, starting as the director for student-athlete success before being promoted to senior woman administrator in 2010. Her responsibilities for the Spartans included serving as sports supervisor for women’s volleyball, swimming & diving and softball, and overseeing compliance, academics, student services, life skills, and student-athlete advising and tutoring.

During her tenure at San Jose State, the department’s overall Academic Progress Rate (APR) rose from 925 to 972. The football team’s APR increased from 888 in 2008 to 975 in 2015. The overall student-athlete GPA reached an all-time high in 2016.

From 2001-06, Jarnigan was the coordinator of student services and an associate athletic director for student services (2007-08) at the University of Tulsa. In 2003 and 2004, she was honored with the Tulsa Area Girls and Women in Sports Role Model Award.

Her career in athletics administration began at Briar Cliff College where she was an assistant athletic director (1994-96) and interim director of athletics (1996). The 1987 graduate cum laude of St. Olaf College was a four-year letterwinner in volleyball. She received her master’s degree in athletic administration from Fort Hays State University in 1988.

Jarnigan has high school and college teaching and coaching experiences in Minnesota, Iowa and Kansas. She was the women’s volleyball head coach at Bethel College (1989-94), Briar Cliff College (1994-96) and Carleton College (1996-99). Her 1992 Bethel College was a conference champion and she was named the conference coach of the year for the team’s accomplishment.

“I’m thrilled with the opportunity to work alongside Coach Kill and the Saluki coaches and staff to support the success of our student-athletes, teams and university,” Jarnigan said.

Her husband, Jeff Jarnigan, is an assistant general manager and coach for the Arizona Rattlers of the Indoor Football League. The Jarnigans are the parents of three children, Mary, Jack and Emily. Mary is a teacher in Colorado Springs, Jack is a redshirt junior football player at Valparaiso University, and Emily is a junior volleyball player at St. Olaf College.
Jarnigan replaces Kathy Jones, who retired in December after 18 years as Southern’s SWA.

Saluki Athletics announces Ohio State’s Rosalind Joseph as new Director of Track & Field and Cross Country

Joseph
CARBONDALE, Ill. — Saluki Athletics announced on Monday that Ohio State’s Rosalind Joseph has been named Director of Track & Field and Cross Country at Southern Illinois. She recently completed her 10th season on the Buckeyes’ staff, including the last six seasons as Associate Head Coach.

“We couldn’t be more excited on this day to get a superstar in track & field,” SIU Director of Athletics Jerry Kill said. “She comes from a rich pedigree at Ohio State. She’s a dynamic recruiter, a tremendous person, and she’ll fit like a glove in southern Illinois with her personality. I feel very fortunate that we got her here. She’s a difference-maker in our program and will take us where we want to go, and that’s to be the best.”

During her tenure at Ohio State, Joseph worked closely with the Buckeyes’ jumpers and multi-event athletes with remarkable success. Among her recent coaching accomplishments at OSU, Zack Bazile won the 2018 NCAA outdoor title in the long jump to become the program’s first national champion in 25 years on the men’s side,  while All-American Abie Ehimwenman broke Joseph’s own school record in the long jump.

“Coach Joseph has been my right hand,” said Ohio State Director of Track & Field and Cross Country Karen Dennis. “She’s the person who keeps us all anchored. ‘The voice of reason’ is my nickname for her. All the student-athletes, not just in her event area, appreciate the very calm and patient listening ear that she extends. She’s an amazing all-around coach and was very instrumental in interacting with all of our support departments. Everyone around here loves Roz. She’s a big loss for me and our program, but at the same time, she will be a tremendous asset for Southern Illinois. I wish her well and know that she’ll really kill it.”

Ohio State has won a combined six Big Ten team titles during Joseph’s tenure and has produced a host of All-Americans, Big Ten champions, Academic All-Americans,  and Conference and Regional athletes of the year awards. This past outdoor season Joseph earned the Great Lakes Region Men’s Assistant Coach of the Year award.

“I really like to build a culture of integrity, with competent and confident student-athletes,” Joseph said, regarding her coaching philosophy. “I want to develop well-rounded people who can succeed on and off the track and continue on to succeed in life. It starts with the recruiting process and finding the ones who are really passionate individuals and want the opportunity to grow and be great.”

As a collegiate athlete at Ohio State, Joseph was a two-time All-American in the triple jump, placing fifth at the 2005 NCAA Outdoor Championships and sixth at the 2004 championships. A six-time Big Ten champion, Joseph won the Big Ten indoor triple jump and long jump titles in both 2004 and 2005, while also winning the 2004 outdoor triple jump and 2005 outdoor long jump crowns.

A 2014 Ohio State Athletics Hall of Fame inductee, Joseph still holds Ohio State records in the outdoor triple jump (13.50m/44-3.50), the indoor triple jump (13.37m/43-10.50) and the outdoor long jump (6.39m/20-11.75). Joseph was also a 2004 U.S. Olympic Trials triple jump qualifier and the ninth-place finisher in the triple jump at the 2005 USA Track & Field Championships.

She inherits a storied track & field program at Southern Illinois that has produced 29 Olympians, 19 NCAA champions, 204 All-Americans and 778 conference champions.

“I know a lot about the history of Saluki track & field and am honored to have the opportunity to continue that tradition,” Joseph said. “I witnessed SIU’s success when I was a  student-athlete and I respect the accomplishments of my predecessors in the coaching profession. The program they built and the athletes they’ve produced is of national caliber. That’s a big deal and I don’t take the responsibility lightly.”

A 2006 graduate of Ohio State with a degree in human ecology, Joseph and her husband, Dexter, have a daughter, Gabrielle, and a son, Harrison.

Matheny takes high road, accepts blame for Cardinals’ disappointing season

Deposed Cardinals manager Mike Matheny took the high road Sunday. He threw no daggers at anyone in the organization for his abrupt dismissal after Saturday’s come-from-ahead 8-2 loss here to Cincinnati.

Shildt earns first win as Cardinals manager

A day after the Cardinals fired Mike Matheny as manager, a group of struggling players found a groove. Marcell Ozuna singled and scored, Tommy Pham drove in two runs, and Dexter Fowler sent a ball over the right-field wall. It all led to a 6-4 Cardinals win — the first of interim manager Mike Shildt’s career.

Matheny out: Cardinals chairman DeWitt says ‘it was time for a fresh voice’

ST. LOUIS — Seeking what he referred to multiple times as a “fresh start” and a “new start,” Cardinals chairman Bill DeWitt Jr. said the firing of manager Mike Matheny late Saturday night was a response to what officials saw as a team not living up to expectations, or even backsliding.

DeWitt still believes Cardinals are ‘playoff-caliber club’

Bill DeWitt Jr., the Cardinals’ chairman since his group bought the team after the 1995 season, is as painfully aware as almost anyone else that the first 60 percent or so of the Cardinals’ season hasn’t gone exactly to script.
