The Sesser-Valier Red Devils take home the third place trophy by defeating the top seeded Woodlawn Cardinals to keep some third place hardware in the commons.

Both teams went to the locker room tied up at 24.  Joshua Gunter came off the bench in the second quarter to have all of his seven points.

S-V Outscored Woodlawn 14-8 in the third quarter to take a 38-32 lead.  It looks like Lukas Gunter, who WMIX broadcaster Danny Czerwinski called the Red Baron all week knocked five of six free throws down the stretch to seal the victory.   He was chosen to the all tournament team.  He as well as Preston Launius led the Devils with 12 each.  Tyler Winchester added eight as well.  Winchester was the second Red Devil to make the all tournament team.

Blake Wollerman led all scorers on the afternoon with 13 points.  Post player Jordan Hoppa stepped behind the arc and hit four bombs on the afternoon and added 12 for the Cardinals.

This is what Sesser-Valier coach Shane Garner had to say about the week in general:

“We had a great week. We obviously didn’t get to play in the championship game like we hoped, but finished the tournament with a win and 3 wins overall is a good week. Looking forward to working on some things that were exposed this week and attacking the second half of the season.”

Sesser-Valier improves to 5-7 on the year.  They have two BDC west games coming up with Vienna at Home Tuesday and Trico on the road Saturday.  Unfortuately, I have to say weather permitting on Saturday.

I watched bits and peices of a couple of Vienna’s games from Eldorado.  My thoughts are they are a lot like the Red Devils.  There is not one superstar.  They have good team coherence and go about ten deep.

The Cardinals fall to 6-7 on the year and has Sandoval at home in a Midland Trial conference game Tuesday night. They travel to Altamont on Saturday.  Going to the 217 that one is definitely weather permitting.

I would like to thank the staff of Sesser-Valier HS for posting the copies of the score book.  Athletic Director Chip Basso gives me a lot of information.

I have known Superintendent Jason Henry all my life he is always gracious with his time.

Principal Natalie Page was very gracious with her time.  I praise the Lord often that she is in remission.  You have been an inspiration to me.

Thank you Coach Garner for your time.  You have always been gracious every time I ask you.  I have mentioned this on my blog, but I haven’t since I started writing for franklincounty-news. com, but I appreciate your unashamedly stand for the Lord.

Redbirds win Consolation Championship at the EHT defeating Massac Co.

The FCHS Redbirds Varsity boys basketball team won the consolation championship of the Eldorado Holiday Tournament Wednesday with a 46-33 victory over the Massac Co. Patriots. After losing to Carmi by just two points in their first game of the tournament, West Frankfort won their next three games with excellent team defense and very good play from seniors Noah Allen and Austin Glodich. Against Massac Co., the Redbirds jumped out front early with a 10-6 first quarter lead, but they were hurt when their 6’5” center Glodich picked up his third foul in the middle of the second quarter. With Glodich on the bench, Massac Co. took control of the game and went into halftime with a 22-18 lead….Allen led West Frankfort in scoring with 23 points. Glodich had his third double/double of the tournament as he finished the game with 11 points and 12 rebounds. He also tied for the team lead with 4 steals. Keagan Thrash and Andrew Sturghill scored 4 points each. Thrash also led his team with 5 assists. Kyle Hammers and Lucas Wolfe scored 2 points each. Hammers also tied for the team lead with 4 steals. C.J. Johnson did not score but he had another good game as he finished with 3 rebounds, 3 steals and 3 assists.

to hand Benton its first loss of the season with a 59-53 win at the 10th Annual Duster Thomas Hoops Classic on Wednesday. “I’m kind of speechless,” said Pinckneyville coach Bob Waggoner. “Our kids never stopped believing we were going to find a way … we really dug deep and wore them out in the fourth quarter and we took advantage of it.” ……….”It was a game of runs,” said Benton coach Ron Winemiller. “We had inopportune turnovers and missed layups when we really needed a basket. This game hurts and stings and we’re disappointed as all heck, but the most important game is our next one against Massac.”…..

Christopher games.SESSER – Playing without one of their key players in the first half of their quarterfinal game on Tuesday afternoon against Marissa-Coulterville, the Woodlawn Cardinals were ripe for an upset at the 36th annual Sesser-Valier Holiday Tournament. Coach Brian Gamber saw his senior leader Blake Wollerman go to the bench early in the first quarter after picking up a pair of early personal fouls. But with Wollerman on the pine, the rest of the young Cardinals stepped up and abv-jackweathered the Meteors’ storm. When the 5-foot-11 senior returned to the floor, he made a big difference in the outcome as his all-around play sparked his club. Franklin County triple-header again tonight in Sesser

by Steve Dunford

Just like last night, the three games in the evening session of the Sesser-Valier holiday tournament involve Franklin County Schools.

Just to catch you up on action from today; West Frankfort beat Hamilton County 50-46 this morning at the Eldorado Holiday Tournament.  They play Union County KY in the Consolation Semi- Finals at 4:45

The Benton Rangers beat Trenton-Weslin this morning 62-30 at the Duster Thomas Hoops Classic in Pinckneyville.  They take on the Olney Tigers at 8:30 tonight in the auxiliary gym.

Johnston City blew out Zeigler-Royalton this afternoon 74-37 at Sesser Valier.  Brendan Whiting led the Tornadoes with 20.  Steven Anderson added eight.

You are caught up on everything from everywhere else, now here is the previews of tonight’s games from Sesser-Valier

CHRISTOPHER (4-4) vs CHESTER (8-2)

Last night the Bearcats knocked off a decent New Athens team 65-christopher-bearcats35.  Kaelab Pedigo exploded again with 27 with six threes.  Bradely Young was involved in the offense more as he had 18.  Jared Curry added nine.

Chester pulled out a 77-76 Overtime win against Century.

The keys to the game for the Bearcats

  • Pedigo is going to have to be hot from the outside, you can throw Curry in there as well.
  • They are going to have to continue getting Bradley Young involved in the offense.
  • They are going to have to keep even with Chester on the boards.
  • Stay out of Foul Trouble

This is a game the lack of depth of the Bearcats might hurt them.chester  The physicality of Weir down in the post will give Christopher some issues.  Savion Smith burned the Bearcats up at Randolph County last season, and the slashing and dribble drive penetration will give them problems tonight.

I am going with the Yellow Jackets by four.  I just have a gut feeling Christopher will be in deep foul trouble in this one.

THOMPSONVILLE (3-5) vs GALATIA (3-6)

This is the first of three for sure and possibly five match-ups between these to teams.

tville-logoWith Thompsonville playing a little McLeansboro ball last night, as well as Steeleville playing cat and mouse last night trying to bring T’ville out of their zone, the first half looked like a football score at halftime last night.

Here are the keys to the game for T’ville tonight

  • They are going to have to keep it in the 50’s
  • They have to get more involved in the offense other than Payne, Kessler and Fitch, who led with 15 on the night
  • They have to keep out of foul trouble as well
  • I believe if you get the ball into Athoney Darge, you can get Galatia in foul trouble.

After a good start, the Tigers stunk it up the last two times out,

coming into the tournament.   From keeping my ear to the ground the Bearcats looked awful last night

The fourth quarter the Tigers put up against a quality opponent in Steeleville, is just what this young ball club needed.

You can throw the record books out when these two get together.  I am going with the Tigers by five.

SESSER-VALIER (3-6) vs STEELEVILLE (7-3)

pitchforkIt sounds like the Red Devils were firing on all eight cylinders coming in to the tourney after playing a brutal schedule.

In the 77-31 win over Galatia, it was a very balanced attack for the Devils, as Charlie Farmer had 15 points on the night with Tyler Winchester, Preston Launius, and Jamie Lance adding 10 on the night.  Twelve scored for S-V on the night.

The keys for the Devils tonight are the following:steeleville

  • Keep playing the way you have at late
  • Keep the balanced attack
  • Keep Gross from exploding.  There are three our four Devils that could do a good job on him.

Both teams will play a lot of players.  This is a game that will be decided in the last thirty seconds tonight.  I am giving Sesser-Valier the edge being at home.  They will pull it out tonight by a point.

Christopher cruises in their Sesser-Valier tourney opener

SESSER — The Christopher Bearcats used and outside-in approach in a 65-35 win over the New Athens Yellow Jackets at the Sesser-Valier Holiday Tournament. Christopher held a 31-23 half time lead,

largely on the outside shooting of senior guard Kaeleb Pedigo. Pedigo had 17 points at the half, including five 3-pointers. However, the Bearcats didn’t pull away from New Athens until they got their inside game rolling in the second half. Zach Young, a 6-foot-2 junior, had just four points at the half, but exploded for a dozen in the third quarter. “They’re both very good players,” said Christopher coach Eric Stallman. “Pedigo caught fire early and hit a bunch of jump shots and that really opened things up.” Please click to read the rest of the story from Les Winkler…of The Southern

Tornadoes tip it up against JC at High Noon at Sesser

The Zeigler-Royalton Tornadoes will be facing the Johnston City Indians at 12 P.M. in the Sesser-Valier Holiday Tournament  consonlation quarterfinal game.

z-r-logo-2Z-R was defeated yesterday in the opening round against top seeded Woodlawn Cardinals 55-52.  Brendan Whiting led the Tornadoes with 25, Steven Anderson had 14, and Cam Newton added 11 yesterday.

The Indians live and die by the three.  Z-R plays a half court game.  Max Edwards might cause the Tornadoes some problems offensively, but JC does not get him involved in their offense too much.

I am just smelling an upset.  Z-R always plays well against JC.  I am going with the Tornadoes in this one.  When a team that lives and dies with the three like the Indians do, you just don’t know what you can get.

Redbirds outlast Foxes-Play Union Co KY at 4:45 this afternoon

wf-redbirdsELDORADO-  The West Frankfort Redbirds won in the breakfast special at the Eldorado Holiday Tournament defeating the Hamilton County Foxes 50-46 this morning.   Noah Allen led WF with 22.  Austin Glodich chipped in 13.

They will Play the Union County KY Braves at 4:45 p.m., this afternoon.  The Braves are out of Morganfield, which is just a few miles across the river from Shawneetown.

The Braves are led by sharp shooting guard Elex Dunford (no relation) and post player Marqualio King.  Noah Allen will shut Dunford down.  If King does not get the Redbirds in foul trouble, they should advance to the consolation championship tomorrow.  I am going with the Redbirds by five.

Rangers/Redbirds getting ready to tip it up soon

by Steve Dunford

The WF Redbirds have the breakfast special at the Eldorado Holiday tournament this morning as they will be tipping it up at 8:30 against the Hamilton County Foxes soon.  If the internet connection is restored at Duff-Kingston gym, the game will be video streamed on foxesfans.net.

This picture is from the website hiddengyms@blogspot.com It is a great site for gym junkies.

The Benton Rangers open action today at the Duster Thomas Hoops classic as they face Trenton-Wesclin this morning at 10:30 in Thomas gym, and play the Olney Tigers this evening.

Benton Coach Ron Winemiller has this to say about both match-ups; “I think Wesclin is one of the best teams we have played all year. They are long athletic and can all really shoot the ball. I am worried about their ability to take us to the post and cause us problems with their length.”

“Olney is very well coached. They aren’t as good as they have been in the past but they will cause us some problems with Miller and Lambeard.”

I will do my best to keep you updated about all Holiday Tournament action on franklincounty-news.com

Franklin County boys basketball preview evening edition

There is a triple header at the Sesser-Vailer Holiday tournament of christopher-bearcatsthree county teams tonight.  The final session starts at 5:00 pm with Christopher against New Athens; followed by Thompsonville and Steeleville; then Sesser-Valier and Galatia in the night cap.

Christopher (3-4) vs New Athens (3-6)

There is one necessity for the Bearcats, that is to get Bradley Young more involved in the offense.

St. Louis Post Dispatch photo

New Athens is led by 6′ 6″ junior Jaxon Heintz.  They have a pretty good guard in Theo Dudeck.

The Yellow Jackets own a 10 point win over Flora, which raised my eyebrows.

I am going with the Bearcats by five. It is going to be a grueling fight for whoever plays at 7 o’clock Thursday night.

Thompsonville (3-4) Steeleville (6-3)

The Tigers look like they might have been poised for a seven or tville-logoeight seed until the wheels fell off a couple of weeks ago.  This is what Tiger coach Pete Gordon has to say coming into tonight’s game; “Steeleville is good, they are well coached. We will have our hands full.  If we can compete and fight, we can have a shot at a w.”

Steeleville destroyed T’ville last year in the consolation championship game.  However, a short handed Tiger team played with them

The big question for the Tigers is, Can they stop Owen Gross.  I am curious who gets the defensive assignment on him.  I say it will be steelevilleJared Payne.  Corbin Fitch and Tyson Kessler might guard him as well.

The SVHT is a pivotal point in the Tigers season.  Even if they are two and out and compete, they are poised for a good second half.

I am going with Steeleville by 12 tonight.

Sesser-Vailer (2-6) at Galatia (3-5)

pitchforkThere are a lot of similarities.  Both teams like to play a lot of people.  Both teams like to push it.

Clark Lance better get him an extra RC product before the game starts from the hospitality room.  He will be announcing a lot of points and a lot of subs.

This will be a very high scoring game.  The back court for both

teams I give a draw.  The Devils have the edge inside.

I am trying to take of an adjective to describe this but the best I could come up with is Galatia plays wild.  They want their opponent to play like this.

I expect it to be a good ball game.  I am going with S-V by six.
