Montero DFA’d by Cubs after comments

http://m.cubs.mlb.com/news/article/239259128/cubs-designate-miguel-montero-for-assignment/

WASHINGTON, DC –  (Carrie Muskat, MLB.com.  Please click on the link for the full story.  Here is an excerpt below.)

Miguel Montero, who criticized pitcher Jake Arrieta after Tuesday’s loss to the Nationals, was designated for assignment on Wednesday by the Cubs. While the club has not announced the move, Montero confirmed it to MLB.com and thanked the city of Chicago and his teammates for their support via some farewell messages on Twitter.

Cubs president of baseball operations Theo Epstein called Montero early Wednesday with the news, and the veteran said he wasn’t surprised

“Not really,” Montero told MLB.com. “I really thought maybe something was going to happen. I understand, I totally understand. If I’m going to take the blame and the team takes off from now, I’ll feel much better. I really want to see them succeed, every single guy.”

Miners Halt Late Grizzlies Push For Win

SAUGET, IL-  The Southern Illinois Miners secured their seventh victory in their last ten games overall thanks to a pair of home runs by Ryan Lashley and stout work by the bullpen to hold an early lead in a 5-4 triumph over the Gateway Grizzlies at GCS Credit Union Ballpark in Sauget on Tuesday night.

Two batters into the game against Gateway starter and Murphysboro native Dylan Craig (1-5), the Miners had the lead, as after Craig Massey singled leading off the game, Lashley hit a two-run homer down the right field line for a 2-0 advantage. Two Gateway errors in the second inning led to a third Miners run for a 3-0 advantage, and after Gateway came back with two runs on a single by Matt Hearn in the second to make it 3-2, Southern Illinois would add single runs their next two turns at bat.

In the third, with two outs and men at first and second base, Ryan Sluder lined a single into the outfield to score Anthony Critelli to make it 4-2, and Lashley led off the fourth inning with a solo shot, his second homer of the game, over the left field fence to make it 5-2.

Gateway responded with single runs in the fifth and sixth innings against Chris Washington (1-0), drawing within 5-4 on Jack Hranec’s solo home run in the sixth. The Grizzlies then loaded the bases with one out that same inning, but Nick Palacios struck out Hearn and got Brent Sakurai to pop out to preserve the lead.

After working a flawless seventh inning, in the eighth, Kyle Tinius faced a bases-loaded situation as well, walking three in the inning, but got Sakurai to again pop out to end the threat and send the game to the ninth inning. John Werner then secured his seventh save of the season by striking out the side, the last two batters representing a potential winning run with a runner on second base, as the Miners won the series opener.

Lashley finished with three total RBIs and two runs scored on his two home runs, while Washington lasted five and one-third innings, striking out five in the contest to earn his first professional win. Critelli also added two hits in the contest as Southern Illinois won their second straight while sending the Grizzlies to their eighth straight loss.

The Miners will look for a third straight victory and a series win against the Grizzlies on Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m., with Austin Dubsky making the start for Southern Illinois against Gateway’s Will Anderson.

The Southern Illinois Miners are the 2016 Frontier League West Division Champions, the 2014 and 2015 Frontier League East Division Champions and the 2012 Frontier League Champions. They have been awarded the Frontier League Organization of the Year award three times since their inception, and also set a new Frontier League attendance record in 2007, their inaugural season. Can Paul DeJong Play Shortstop In the Big Leagues?

The Cardinals need to find out

https://www.101sports.com/2017/06/27/can-paul-dejong-play-shortstop-big-leagues-cardinals-need-find/

ST. LOUIS, MO –  (Bernie Miklasz, WXOS Radio.  Please click on the link above for the full story.  Here is am excerpt below.)

The 2017 Cardinals have roster flaws, and positional redundancy is clearly one of the problems.

Obviously the case can be made (easily) that the Cardinals are suffering from a shortage of good position players, very good players — and, especially, great players. But the relative mediocre quality of the Cards’ position-player talent is even more frustrating when you see logjams at various positions.

Good players, or potential “plus” players, are blocked by existing starters. One such example is top catching prospect Carson Kelly, who may have to wait until 2021 until he becomes the full-time starter. There’s also a looming traffic snarl in the outfield — not just with Dexter Fowler, Tommy Pham, Randal Grichuk, Stephen Piscotty and Jose Martinez. But the Cardinals have other young outfielders making their way to STL including Magneuris Sierra, Harrison Bader and Adolis Garcia. (Garcia has been promoted from Double-A Springfield to Triple-A Memphis.)

Stubblefield Twirls Shutout As Miners Split Doubleheader

From the Southern Illinois Miners

Tyler Stubblefield, at a recent start at Rent One Park. (SI Miners photo)

The Southern Illinois Miners got a complete-game shutout from Tyler Stubblefield with a career-high ten strikeouts in a 5-0 win over the Evansville Otters in game two of a doubleheader on Sunday at Bosse Field to secure a split of the two games after the Otters won the first contest 10-1.

In the second game, the Miners scored first in the first inning, as after Craig Massey led off the game with a double, Kurt Wertz, Jr. singled him home with two outs for a 1-0 Miners advantage. In the second inning, with Massey on first and two outs after a single, Brett Wiley launched a deep drive to center that was off the glove of Manny De Jesus and called an error, allowing Massey to score from first base and make it 2-0 Miners.

Southern Illinois would get three more runs in the third inning- with the bases loaded on two singles and a walk, Ryan Sluder laced a base hit to left field for his first professional hit and run batted in and a 3-0 Miners lead. Zach Taylor followed with a sacrifice fly to right field to make it 4-0 before a wild pitch by Evansville starter Diego Ibarra made the score 5-0.

Stubblefield (3-1), meanwhile, was outstanding on the mound, working out of a jam with runners at first and third base and one out in the first inning with his first two strikeouts before settling into a groove. The first-year Miner would proceed to strike out at least one batter in every inning, finishing with a career-best 10 in the game while permitting four singles and two walks in the first shutout by a single Miners pitcher since June 12th, 2016.

In the first game, Evansville starter Max Duval pitched a complete game with 10 strikeouts of his own, holding the Miners to one run, which scored in the fourth inning on an RBI single by Anthony Critelli for his first professional run batted in. The Otters’ offense scored four runs in the first, two on one of two homers hit in the game by Jeff Gardner, and added three runs in the third inning, one in the fifth and two in the sixth to complete the scoring.

Winners of six of their last nine contests overall, Southern Illinois will next travel to Sauget, Illinois on Tuesday to start a three-game series against the Gateway Grizzlies. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m., with Chris Washington taking the mound for the Miners against Gateway left-hander Dylan Craig.

Late Homer Sinks Miners In Evansville Saturday night

From the Southern Illinois Miners

Miners RH Zack Cooper in a recent start at Rent One Park

EVANSVILLE, IN – The Southern Illinois Miners got a brilliant, seven-inning start by Zach Cooper on the mound, but after he departed in the eighth, the Evansville Otters took the lead on a home run by Kolten Yamaguchi as Southern Illinois fell 3-1 on Saturday night at Bosse Field in Evansville.

Cooper’s only run allowed came in the first inning. The Otters loaded the bases with no one out on an infield hit, a single and a hit batter. Alejandro Segovia then lined out to Marc Flores at first base, and Flores stepped on first to double off Dane Phillips before attempting a throw to second for a possible triple play. His throw was errant, however, and the runner at third came in to score for a 1-0 Otters lead. Cooper, though, struck out John Schultz to keep the damage to just the lone unearned run.

It would be the only run he permitted across seven innings of work, surrendering four hits and one walk with two hit batters, but also striking out six to keep Evansville at bay. Meanwhile, the Miners evened the score in the top of the fifth inning. After London Lindley walked to lead off against Otters starter Felix Baez, Craig Massey singled him to third base. After a flyout, Ryan Lashley hit a sacrifice fly to center field to knot the game up at 1-1.

It would stay tied until the bottom of the eighth, when after a single by Josh Allen with one out against Chris DeBoo (0-1), Yamaguchi hit a go-ahead, two-run home run that stayed just fair inside the right field foul pole to give the Otters a 3-1 lead. In the top of the ninth, with two outs, Lindley walked again and Massey singled off Otters closer Randy McCurry, putting the tying run on first base, but a strikeout ended the game.

The Miners and Otters will finish the series with a doubleheader on Sunday night beginning at 4:05 p.m. at Bosse Field. Ethan Gibbons will pitch for the Miners in the first game against Evansville’s Max Duval, while Tyler Stubblefield will toe the rubber in the second game, opposed by the Otters’ Diego Ibarra.
