Obituary – Tina Louise Cockrum – Christopher

Tina Louise Cockrum, 48, of Christopher, passed away July 11, 2013 at her home.

She worked as a CNA and sold Avon and was a member of the Sesser Church of God.

Tina was born March 31, 1965 to Noble Lee Cockrum and Ellen (Graves) Cockrum.  She was preceded in death by her father and her mother survives.

Also surviving is a sister, Connie and John Halliday, Carterville, IL, and two nieces Kelli and Makenzie Halliday and several aunts, uncles and cousins.  Tina is also survived by her dog Mickey.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday, July 15, 2013 at Brayfield-Gilbert Funeral Home in Sesser.  Visitation will be on Sunday, July 14, 2013 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.  Interment will be at Horse Prairie Cemetery in Sesser, IL.

Obituary – Roy D. Barnhart – Buckner

BUCKNER – Roy D. Barnhart, 62, died Thursday, July 11, 2013, in St. Louis University Hospital.

Roy was a truck driver by occupation and served in the U.S. Marines.

He was born Aug. 18, 1950 to James Joseph Barnhart and Marion (Coan) Coleman. His parents preceded him in death.

He was also preceded in death by his stepfather, Otis Coleman.

He was married to Sue (Butterfield) Barnhart and she survives of Buckner.

Other survivors include children, Justin Barnhart of Buckner, Tammy Miller of Buckner, Eric Barnhart of Oglesby, Jody Barnhart of Ina, and Roy Dale Barnhart Jr. of Buckner; 11 grandchildren; brothers and sisters, James Barnhart of Valier, Tony Barnhart of Pittsburg, Tina Claahan of LaSalle, Kelly Coleman of Valier, Shawn Coleman of LaSalle, Holly McLaughlin of LaSalle, and Sherry Hill Pheonix, Ariz.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Daniel Barnhart.

Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Tuesday, July 16, at Valier First Baptist Church, with the Rev. Frank Senter officiating. Visitation will be from 3 to 4 p.m. Tuesday at the church.

Obituary – James “Gib” Phillips – Benton

James “Gib” Phillips, 81, of Benton passed away Wednesday morning July 10, 2013 in Benton.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, July 13 at the First Christian Church in Benton with the Rev. Bill A. Carter officiating.  Burial with military rites will be conducted by Benton American Legion and VFW posts and National Guard Honor Team at Masonic & Oddfellows Cemetery in Benton.

Visitation will be in Masonic & Oddfellows Cemetery in Benton.  Visitation will be after 10 a.m. on Saturday at the First Christian Church in Benton.

Memorial contributions in Mr. Phillips’ memory may be made to the First Christian Church Building Fun or to the Alzheimer’s Association.

Obituary – Paul L. Barnfield – Whittington

WHITTINGTON – Paul L. Barnfield, 70, passed away at 1:35 p.m. Wednesday, July 3, 2013, at his home.

He was born Aug. 30, 1942, in Benton, the son of Elzie and Marie (Hamilton) Barnfield. He married the former Barbara G. Winemiller on Aug. 24, 1968, in Benton, and she survives.

Mr. Barnfield was a member of American Quarter Horse Association, and he showed and trained horses.

He was a sales trainer and entrepreneur.

Mr. Barnfield served in the Army National Guard from June 11, 1960, to April 17, 1964, and then in the Army Reserve, where he was discharged June 19, 1968, and qualified as a sharpshooter.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara Barnfield of Whittington; daughter, Amy and husband, Rich Miller, of Glen Carbon; son, Timothy Barnfield of Marion, five grandchildren, Justin, Abigail, Connor, Tyler and Alicia, two sisters and brother-in-law, Dorothy and husband, the Rev. Paul Brown, and Francis Melvin, all of West Frankfort, and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, David; and two sisters, Ruthie and Shirley.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday, July 8, in Morton & Johnston Funeral Home in Benton with Brother Ralph Brandon officiating. Burial with military rites, conducted by Benton American Legion and VFW posts and an Illinois National Guard Honor Team, will be in Shiloh Cemetery in Whittington. Visitation will be after 11 a.m. Monday at Morton & Johnston Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Southern Illinois and will be accepted at the funeral home.

Obituary – Dorothy Elvera Jones – Sesser

SESSER – Dorothy Elvera Jones, 90, died Wednesday, July 3, 2013, in Nature Trail Healthcare in Mount Vernon.

She worked as a dress factory inspector in Du Quoin and was a member of First Baptist Church in Sesser.

Dorothy was born Aug. 25, 1922, in Washington County, to Christan and Virginia (Watson) Nehrkorn.

Dorothy is survived by her son, Ronnie Jones of Sesser.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; son, Roger Jones on Oct. 29, 2012; daughter-in-law, Virginia Jones; and sister, Ester Jane Nehrkorn.

Funeral ervices will be Saturday, July 6 at 11 a.m. at Brayfield-Gilbert Funeral Home in Sesser, with Brother Mark Miller officiating. Interment will be in Maple Hill Cemetery Sesser. Visitation will be from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Obituary – Joyce Spencer – Whittington

Joyce Lynn Spencer, 76, of Whittington, passed away Sunday, June 30, 2013 at her home.

She was born in Whittington on Sept. 25, 1936 to Raymond and Vaneta (Winemiller) House.

She married James Spencer on Nov. 27, 1952.  They were married for 60 years.

Mrs. Spencer was a former hairdresser and worked at H & R Block before retiring.

She is survived by her husband, James Spencer, of Whittington, three daughters, Brenda (David) Garvin, Carla (Bennie) Allsopp and Penny (Dale) Brookins, all of Whittington and two sisters, JoAnn Johnston, of Mt. Vernon and Jane Spencer, of Whittington.

Also surviving are five grandchildren, Adam (Shelly) Allsopp and Mathew Allsopp, both of Whittington, Ryan (Dawn) Garvin, of Benton, Kentucky, Mallory (Alex) Gibbs, of Benton, and Chelsea Brookins, of Whittington.  Additional survivors include four great-grandchildren, Presley, Holden and Keira Allsopp and Kinlee Garvin.  She was preceded in death by her parents.

Graveside funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, July 2 at Shiloh Cemetery with the Rev. Mark Minor officiating.  There will be no visitation, those attending are requested to meet at the cemetery.

Obituary – Eco Christine Edmonds – Mulkeytown

MULKEYTOWN – Eco Christine Edmonds, 26, passed away Friday morning, June 28, 2013, in Franklin Hospital Benton.

Eco was born March 18, 1987, in Carbondale, to Bryan and Mary (Wade) Edmonds.

Eco graduated from Christopher High School in 2005 and studied at Rend Lake College.  She was employed at American Legion Post 280 in Benton. She will be remembered by family and friends for her bubbly personality that would instantly put a smile on your face.

Eco is survived by a daughter, 7-year-old Julienne Christine Laurent; parents, Mary and Wade Chaplin of Benton and Bryan Edmonds of Mulkeytown; grandparents, Peggy and Dennis Caldwell, Bob and Kim Edmonds and Mary Rogers; great-grandparents, Abe Chestnut and Donald Wade; twin sisters, Whitley and Amber Ticer; brother, Kodiak Frye; uncles, Rob Edmonds and Marty Wade and wife, Tabitha; aunt, Missy Wade; and several other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by great-grandparents, Annis Chestnut, Ruth and Robert Edmonds and Ida and Charles Jelly.

Funeral services will be at 6 p.m. Wednesday, July 3, in Gilbert Funeral Home in Christopher, with Brother Cody Christianson officiating. Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesday. Burial will be in Mulkeytown Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to an educational fund for Eco’s daughter, Julienne Christine Laurent and will be accepted at the funeral home.

Obituary – William Henry Warfel – formerly of Christopher

BENTON – William Henry Warfel, 89, formerly of Christopher, died Wednesday, June 26, 2013, in Franklin Hospital emergency room in Benton.

Henry was a truck driver by occupation and was a member of Orient Church of Christ, and was an elder and Sunday school teacher.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran during World War II and was a member of the Masonic Lodge.

Henry loved to dance and tell stories and he was a friend to everybody he met.

Henry was born April 26, 1924, in Zeigler, to Henry and Anna (Gilson) Warfel.

Henry married Connie (Cockrum) Warfel and she preceded him in death. He was first married to Ruth (Gipson) Warfel and she also preceded him in death.

He is survived by a daughter-in-law, Laura (Wasson) Warfel of Park Forest; grandchildren, Elizabeth Suzanne and Jeremy Brown of Lubbock, Texas, William Thomas and Alana Warfel of Dallas, Scott Eugene and Meggan Warfel of Tulsa, Okla.; and four great-grandchildren.

Henry was preceded in death by his parents; one son, William Eugene Warfel; first wife, Cindy(Lazzeri) Warfel; four sisters, Frieda Blackard, Hallie Worthing, Nellie Reeves and Lois Lowery; and one brother, Edward Warfel.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 2, in Gilbert Funeral Home in Christopher, with the Rev. Ed Pool officiating. Interment will be in Masonic and IOOF Cemetery in Benton. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, July 1, at the funeral home.

Obituary – Christina Marie Bradley – Valier

Christina Marie Bradley, 19, of Valier; died as the result of injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident that occurred on Tuesday evening at the intersection of State Route 154 and Larry Foster Parkway near Whittington.

Funeral services will be held at 12:00 noon Friday, June 28, 2013 at the Leffler – Poulson Funeral Home of Benton, with Pastor Alan Kornacki officiating.  Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until the funeral hour on Friday at the Leffler – Poulson Funeral Home.  Per Christina’s wishes, she will be cremated.

Ms. Bradley was born February 18, 1994 in DuQuoin the daughter of John Bradley and Lisa (Klingel) Bradley.  She was living with David B. Couture and he too died as the result of injuries sustained in the same motor vehicle accident as Christina.

Christina is survived by her mother Lisa Bradley of Benton, her father John Bradley of Christopher, maternal grandmother Beverly Klingel of Christopher, paternal grandmother Ruth Bradley of Christopher, several aunts, uncles and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her maternal grandfather William Klingel and her paternal grandfather Elbert Bradley.

Obituary – Sam M. Yosanovich – Christopher

Sam M. Yosanovich, 76, of Christopher, died on Tuesday, June 24, 2013 at Franklin Hospital, in Benton.

Mr. Yosanovich was born in Du Quoin, Illinois, the son of Sam M. Yosanovich and Theresa (Kapello) Yosanovich.  He was an Army veteran.

He is survived by one brother, John and Sue Yosanovich and nieces Linda and Terry Norman, Sarah and Alan Mathisen and Jeanette and Greg Garduno and one nephew, Dr. George Zehak.  He is also survived by many great nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister Mary Zehak and Brothers Julius, Joseph and Steve Hornyak and a nephew, Mark Yosanovich.

Funeral services will be held at Gilbert Funeral Home on Thursday, June 27, 2013 at 3 p.m. with Brother Mark Miller officiating. Visitation will be: from 1:00 P.M. till service time at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday.  Burial will be Masonic & Oddfellows Cemetery in Benton.
