Obituary – M. Geraldine (Overturf) Johnson – Christopher

CHRISTOPHER — M. Geraldine (Overturf) Johnson, 87, of Christopher, died Thursday, Oct. 31, 2013, at home.

Geraldine was born Feb. 4, 1926, in Buckner to Fitzhugh Raymond Overturf and Francis Ann (Sanders) Overturf.

Geraldine had worked at the Pentagon as a legal secretary, and she was also a homemaker.

She was a member of First Christian Church in Christopher.  Geraldine was also a member of the Red Hats of West Frankfort, and Eastern Star and was also an excellent seamstress.

She married James Carl Johnson II on Nov. 6, 1953, and he survives of Christopher.

Other survivors include children, Jennifer Carol Johnson of Christopher and James Carl Johnson III and his wife, Shanna (Bailey), of Goreville and grandchildren, James Carl Johnson IV and Evan Williams Johnson.  She is also survived by sister-in-law, Evelyn (Gulliver) Overturf of Energy; double cousin, Mary Ann (Overturf) Patterson Harrell of Fort Myers, Fla. and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by parents; two children, Kenneth Lawrence Johnson and Mary Francis Johnson; and one brother, Clarence Melvin Overturf.

Mrs. Johnson’s wishes were to be cremated.  A celebration of life will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 8, at T-Street Pub, 105 N. Thomas St., in Christopher.

Obituary – Connie (Riggs) Redding – Christopher

CHRISTOPHER — Connie (Riggs) Redding, 65, of Christopher, died Thursday, Oct. 31, 2013, at Franklin Hospital emergency room.

Connie worked at the cookie factory in Du Quoin.

Connie was born Aug. 14, 1948, in Waukegan to Leonard Riggs Sr. and Theola Bouffiou.  Her stepmother is Ann Riggs.

Other survivors include children, Eric Redding and Liz Durbin of Benton, Randy and Terry Dawn Redding of Mulkeytown and Natalie and Tony Elam of Christopher.  She is also survived by grandchildren, Samantha, Breanna, Chase, Emma, Daniel, Sami Jo, Nick, Becca, Dakota, David, Erica, Randi and Emily; and sisters and brother, Kim Duiguid of Royalton, Cindy Hill of Christopher, Lori Mitchell of Sikeston, Mo., and Leonard Riggs Jr. of Christopher.

Connie was preceded in death by her mother.

A memorial visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Nov. 4, at Gilbert Funeral Home in Christopher.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to CASA of Franklin county and will be accepted at the funeral home.

Obituary – Lanny “Dean” Uhls – Benton (formerly of Sesser)

Lanny “Dean” Uhls, 67, of Benton and formerly of Sesser, died Monday, October 28, 2013 at his home.

dean martDean was born May 31, 1946 in Du Quoin, IL, the son of Roy Bratton Uhls and Josephine (Aaron) Uhls.

He worked at K & M Liquors in Benton.

Dean is survived by his children Kevin Uhls, of Du Quoin, Keith and Lorri Uhls, of Du Quoin, Mike Canter, of Florida, Angela and Greg Brugger, of Benton, Joe Uhls, of Carbondale, Jessica and Eric Parker, of Benton and Kimberly Uhls, of Sesser.  Also surviving are his grandchildren,  Marshall, Dylan, Levi, Shane, Sam, Zach, Madyson, Takoda, Austin, Cole, Calee, Brylee, Damian, Jersey, Carlee, Kaden, Elly, Annie, Hunter, and Braxton.

Dean is also survived by one great-grandchild, Jayden; two sisters, Jean Glenn, of Valier, IL and Justine Lewis, of Valier, IL; sisters-in-law Marie Uhls, of Valier, IL and Shirley Uhls, of Florida.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Don Uhls and Bob Uhls.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 1, 2013 at Brayfield-Gilbert Funeral Home in Sesser, IL, with Brother David Gilley officiating.  Visitation will be on Friday, Nov. 1 from 11 a.m. until the time of the service at 2 p.m.  Burial will be at Mount Pleasant Cemetery, in Valier, IL.  In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Brayfield-Gilbert Funeral Home to help with funeral expenses.

Obituary – June A. Summers – Formerly of Christopher

June A. Summers, 90, of West Frankfort and formerly of Christopher, died Oct. 25, 2013 at Helia Healthcare in Benton.

June was born Dec. 13, 1922 in Christopher to Hobart Kirkpatrick and Ruie Allen Kirkpatrick.

She married Herbert Layman Summers and he preceded her in death on Sept. 4, 2013.  June worked as an LPN.

She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Greg and Gail Naylor, of Jackson, Michigan.  She is also survived by six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.  June was preceded in death by her parents and one son, Layman Allen Summers.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 2, 2013 at Gilbert Funeral Home in Christopher, IL, with Brother Burton Wills officiating.  Visitation will from 1 p.m. Saturday until the time of the service at 2 p.m.  Interment will be at Mulkeytown Cemetery, in Mulkeytown, IL.

Obituary – Leona Caroline Swisher – Mulkeytown

Leona Caroline Swisher, 82, of Mulkeytown, died Sunday, October 27, 2013 at Stonebridge Senior Care Center, in Benton, IL.

Mrs. Swisher was a homemaker.

She was born January 26, 1931 in Grand Tower, IL, the daughter of Fount Johnson and Pearl (Summer) Johnson.

She married Leon “Skip” Swisher on September 30, 1950 in Carbondale, IL and they spent 47 wonderful years together until his death on March 12, 1998.

She is survived by three daughters, Cherie and husband Gary Browning, of Mulkeytown, Paula and husband David Payne, of Benton and Amy and husband Jeff Jones, of Wylie, Texas. Also surviving is a special granddaughter, Angie Worley, of Mulkeytown and special grandsons, Joey Browning of St. Louis and Cory Payne, of Benton.  Great-grandson Braden Worley, of Mulkeytown, also survives.

Leona was a very avid quilter and made many beautiful quilts, several that she shared with her daughters.  Leona was a loving mother, wife grandmother and friend to many.  Leona was the youngest of seven siblings, that were very close through the years.  She was preceded in death by five sisters Esther, Beulah, Lela, Flora, Norma and one brother Raymond.

She will be sadly missed by her family and three very special friends Bob and Betty Johnson and Sandy Milby.

Funeral services will be Thursday October 31, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at the Gilbert Funeral Home in Christopher, IL with the Rev. Cecil Lee Atchison, 89, of Benton, passed away at 1:30 a.m. on Sunday, October 27, 2013.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, October 29 at Morton & Johnston Funeral Home in Benton.   Funeral services will be ehld at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Octobert 30 at Morton & Johnston Funeral Home in Benton.  Burial will be in Franklin Cemetery with military rites conducted by the Benton American Legion and VFW Post and the Illinois National Guard Honor Squad.

Obituary – Opal Mae Osborne – West City

Opal Mae Osborne, 90, of West City passed away Sunday, October 27, 2013 at the Herrin Hospital.

She was born in West City, IL on January 20, 1923, the daughter of James and Ola Mae (McKinney) Wayman.

She married James A. Osborne in 1945, and he preceded her in death on September 9, 1976.

Mrs. Osborne is survived by her daughter Sherry Osborne Mix, of West City and a son, Devin S. Osborne, of Thompsonville.

She is also survived by 12 grandchildren, Rebecca (Jerry) Choat, Carrier Mills, Brandi Paul, Herrin, Devin S. Osborne, Herrin, Allyson Osborne, Thompsonville, Melody Osborne, Pennsylvania, Anita (Raymond) Frey, Nashville, IL, Angela Clevenger, North Carolina, Annabelle Shukites, Christopher, James Osborne, West Frankfort, Terry Parkhill, West City, Michael (Anna) Osborne, Benton and Lisa (John) Garner, Benton.

Also surviving are 21 great grandchildren and nine great-great grandchildren.

Mrs. Osborne was preceded in death by her parents, husband and by two sons, Meredith Lee Osborne and Roy Dean Osborne and by two granddaughters, Dana D. Cowan and Valerie Osborne.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 31 at Morton & Johnston Funeral Home in Benton.  Burial will be in the Bald Hill Cemetery in Scheller.  Visitation will be after 11 a.m. on Thursday at Morton & Johnston Funeral Home in Benton.

June Jones – Sellersburg Ind. (formerly of Marion)

MARION – June Jones, 89, of Sellersburg, Ind., formerly of Marion, died Tuesday, Oct. 15, 2013, in Floyd Memorial Hospital in New Albany, Ind.Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, October 19 in Morton and Johnston Funeral Home in Benton. Burial will be in Masonic and Oddfellows Cemetery in Benton. Visitation will be from 9 to 10 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Obituary – Jason Dewayne Johnson – Mt. Vernon (formerly of Sesser)

Jason Dewayne Johnson, 43, of Mt. Vernon, formerly of Sesser, died October 15, 2013 in rural Jefferson County.

Jason was born March 17, 1970 in West Frankfort, IL to Bob Johnson, Sr. and Betty (Cockrum) Johnson, and they both survive.

He taught automotive classes at Rend Lake College, worked at Ford Square in Mt. Vernon for 12 years and was presently employed by ILMO Gas in Mt. Vernon.

Jason was a member of the First Baptist Church in Sesser, IL and was also a member of Quail & Turkey Unlimited.  He was an avid hunter and loved to do mechanical work.

He was married to Jane (Abell) Johnson, of Mt. Vernon.

Jason is survived by two sons, Christopher Reide Johnson and Cody Ryan Johnson, both at home.  He is also survived by a brother, Bobby and Suzanne Johnson, of Valier and a sister, Cheryl and Jim Matye, of Valier. Also surviving are nieces and nephews Rachel Matyi, Justin Matyi, Kirsten and Ryan Goodisky and Sophi Johnson.  He is also survived by a special family friend, Angela McNail.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, October 19 at the Brayfield-Gilbert Funeral Home in Sesser with Brother Mark Miller officiating.  Visitation will be after 5 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.  Interment will be in Maple Hill Cemetery, in Sesser.

In lieu of flowers memorial should be made to the Christopher and Cody Johnson  Educational fund and will be accepted at the funeral home.

Obituary – Samuel Franklin “Frank” Head – Benton

BENTON — Samuel Franklin “Frank” Head, 93, passed away Sunday evening Oct. 13, 2013, at home.
Mr. Head was a U.S. Army veteran, who served in the Signal Corps, and a life member of Benton VFW. He also was a member of Benton American Legion and Akin Masonic Lodge of Thompsonville.

He was born May 5, 1920, in Whitesville, Ky., the son of Walter and Minnie (Bullington) Head.  He married Ruth Sullivan on Oct. 12, 1949, in Carmi.

Survivors include his wife, Ruth Head of Benton and four children, Jim Head and wife, Toni, of Benton, Jodene Head of Bloomington, Wayne Head and wife, Martha, of Harrisburg and Linda Fred and husband, Michael, of Urbana He is also survived by 17 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Mr. Head was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Shirley Threewitt; son, Larry Head; twin daughters, Rosalyn and Carolyn; four brothers; and two sisters.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 16, at Morton and Johnston Funeral Home in Benton with the Rev. Karl Barnfield officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Valley Cemetery, near Thompsonville, with military rites conducted by Benton American Legion and VFW posts and National Guard Honor Squad. Visitation will be after 6 p.m. today at the funeral home.
