Obituary – Brian Alvis Lampley – Benton

BENTON – Brian Alvis Lampley, 46, died Friday, Sept. 13, 2013, at home.Brian was born Sept. 16, 1966, in Benton, the son of Kenneth J. and Carmen (Hayse) Lampley.

He graduated in 1984 from Benton Consolidated High School and later entered the U.S. Army, where he proudly and actively served his country from March of 1986 until March of 1988. He then served in the Army reserves until March 29, 1994.

Brian was employed with Benton Street Department, where he was a street maintenance worker since August of 1998. He was a member of Operating Engineers Local 318.

When Brian was younger, he attended East Benton Baptist Church.

Brian enjoyed spending time with his son, Eli, in the outdoors and especially enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping. Brian also loved to attend boat shows and car and boat races.

He is survived by his son, Elijah Alvis “Eli” Lampley of Benton; mother, Carmen Lampley of Benton, ex-wife, Cindy Lampley of Benton and siblings, Debbie and husband Carl Williams of Ina, Kerrie and husband Jackie Dean Stewart of Benton, Rick Lampley of Logan, Joanie and husband Stacey Sims of Paducah, Greg Lampley of Christopher, Lillie Loucks of Zeigler and Rusty Lampley of Benton.  Also surviving are several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.

Brian was preceded in death by his father, Kenneth J. Lampley, paternal grandparents, Alvis and Faye Lampley, maternal grandparents, Glen and Lillian Hayse and by a nephew, Aaron Loucks.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, Sept. 18, at 11 a.m. in Leffler-Poulson Funeral Home in Benton with the Rev. Gary West officiating. Burial will be in Masonic-Odd Fellow Cemetery in Benton with military rites performed by Benton American Legion Post 280, Benton VFW Post 2671 and Illinois National Guard from Marion. Visitation will be from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 17, at the funeral home.

Obituary – Jessie Jewell Stone – Coello

Jessie Jewell Stone, 98, of Coello, IL died September 14, 2013 at Helia Healthcare, in Benton.

She was born in Coello  on June 10, 1915 to Weldon McBride and Golda (Edwards) McBride.

She married Bertram I.Stone on Sept.14, 1935 and he preceded her in death on Aug.11 1981.

Mrs. Stone was a member of the Coello Baptist Church and worked for more than 30 years in local dress factories.

She is survived by her children, Lloyd and Marlene Stone, Orange Park, FL, and Martha Lynn and Gale Jackson, Mulkeytown, IL.

Also surviving are grandchildren Kevin Glancy, Tim Glancy, Carole Berlin, Tari Geary, Rusty Crainshaw, Rhonda Barlow, Steven Stone, Kimberly Fanny, Shelly Spradle and Tami Austin.

She was preceded in death by herarents, husband, brother Hurby McBride, daughter Judy Glancy and three grandchildren Michael, John, Bobby Swisher

Funeral services will be held Thursday September 19, 2013 at 11 a.m. at Gilbert Funeral Home in Christopher with Brother Bob Furlow officiating. Visitation will be Wednesday, September 18 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.  Burial will be in Mulkeytown Cemetery, in Mulkeytown.

Harold Nutt, 73, of Sesser, died September 14, 2013 at his home.

Harold Nutt PictureHe was born May 19, 1939 in Malvern, Arkansas to Newton Nutt and Hattie Irene (Wilson) Nutt.

Mr. Nutt was a truck driver and enjoyed hunting, fishing and attending his grandchildren’s rodeos.

He is survived by his children, Judy (Nutt) Jones of Sesser, IL, Tammie (Nutt) and Larry LeVault of Valier, IL, Brandy (Nutt) Bonner of Assumption, IL and Tiffany (Nutt) and Jeff Cockrum of Sesser, IL.

Also surviving are his grandchildren, Bryce and Mallory Jones, Cody and Lacy Jones, Kyle Jones, Kory Jones, Erica Jo Bird, Holden LeVault, Ashlee LeVault, Tyann LeVault, Peyton Jennings, Clayton Bonner, Tommy Joe Newbury, Alexis Nutt, Branson Nutt and great-grandchildren, Easton Jones, Oakley Jones and Olivia Jones.

Mr. Nutt is also survived by brothers and sisters, Ruby and Bill Brown of N. Little Rock, Arkansas, Joyce Ann Vaughn of Malvern, Arkansas, Bobby Nutt of Sesser, IL and Robert and Mary Boshers of Eldorado, Arkansas.  He was preceded in death by his parents and by two brothers, James Nutt and Richard Nutt

He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, September 19, 2013 at 1 p.m. at Brayfield-Gilbert Funeral Home in Sesser, IL.   Visitation will be Thursday September 19, 2013 from 11 a.m. until the time of the service.

Interment will be in Maple Hill Cemetery Sesser.

Obituary – Herbert Layman Summers – West Frankfort

Herbert Layman Summers, 91, of West Frankfort, died Sept. 4, 2013, in VA Medical Center in Marion.

Herbert worked for Crab Orchard Wildlife Refuge and also served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

He was born July 11, 1922, in Benton to Herbert and Ada V. (Trout) Summers.

He married June (Kirkpatrick) Summers on June 26, 1954, and she survives in Benton.

Survivors include children, Gregory and Gail Naylor of Jackson, Mich.; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren and a sister, Ada Faye Paxton of Mount Vernon.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Layman Allen Summers; one sister, Betty Lou Russell; and one brother, Damon Summers.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 7, in Gilbert Funeral Home in Christopher with Brother Burton Wills officiating. Interment will be in Mulkeytown Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday.

BENTON – Philip Gene Adams, 50, died Tuesday, Aug. 20, 2013, in a single-vehicle accident south of Benton.

Obituary – Anita Vern Lampley – Benton

Anita Vern Lampley, 85, of Benton, passed away Friday, August 16, 2013 at Good Samaritan Hospital in Mt. Vernon.

She was born in Elmo, Missouri on Feb. 8, 1928, the daughter of Zolas Olen and Thekla (Mushbach) Smith.

Mrs. Lampley was retired after for years at Severin Nursing Home in Benton.

She attended North Benton Baptist Church and Fires of Revival Church.

She is survived by two sons, Dennis Lampley and wife Judy, of Benton, and Larry Lampley and wife Shelly, of Whittington.

Also surviving is one grandson, Clint Lampley, High Point, North Carolina and one brother, William W. “Walter” Smith and wife Maxine of Cahokia.  Mr.s Lampley was preceded in death by her parents.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, August 20 at Morton & Johnston Funeral Home in Benton with the Rev. Dean Severin officiating.  Burial will be in Masonic & Oddfellows Cemetery.

Visitation will be after 1 p.m. on Tuesday at Morton & Johnston Funeral Home in Benton.

Obituary – Thomas Lee Williams – Valier

Thomas Lee Williams, 82, of Valier, IL passed away August 12, 2013 at Memorial Hospital in Carbondale, IL.

He was born on Dec. 20, 1930 in Griffin, IN, the son of  Clifford B. Williams and Emerene (Rainey) Remter.  Thomas attended high school at Rights High School in Evanville, IN.

On Nov. 21, 1953 Thomas married Geneva Pearl (Isom) Williams and she survives.

Thomas was an accomplished bricklayer and stone mason since 1949, and he helped build SIU, Rend Lake College, Carbondale Post Office, Times Square Mall, and many area schools.

He was a member of Valier First Baptist Church and served on the Valier Village Board for many years.  He also belonged to the Masonic Lodge, American Legion and Scottish Rights.

He is survived by his children, Debbi and Gary Reed, Rockvale, CO; Michael and Ginny Williams, Sesser, IL; Lori and Denny Baggett, O’Fallon, IL and John and Crystal Williams of Valier.  Also surviving are grandchildren Michelle and Curtis Rogers, Chad and Tonika Schuster, Manda and Bill Palmer, Mikala Williams, Hannah Williams, Logan Baggett, Gabe Saul, Gracie Saul, Thomas Williams and Matt Williams; great-grandchildren Cole Rogers, Kennedy Rogers, Camden Rogers, Kassedy Rogers, Madalyn Pearl Schuster, Lyndsie Palmer, Garrett Palmer, Tanner Palmer

He is also survived by eight brothers and sisters, Billy Dean Williams, Lincoln, NE; Janet (Hart) James, Evansville, IN; Bonnie Provaznik, Valier, IL; Charlene Hampton, Christopher, IL; Steve Williams, Du Quoin, IL; Connie Cutler, Christopher, IL; Theresa Evans, Mt. Vernon, IL and Ricky Jo Williams, Herrin, IL.

Thomas was preceded in death by his parents, one brother Jerry Ray Cavins and two sisters, Anna Rose George and Snooki Bowers.

A memorial service will be held on Sunday, August 18, 2013 at 5 p.m. at Valier First Baptist Church.  Visitation will be at the church from 1:30 p.m. until the time of the memorial service.  In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Valier First Baptist Church.

Aileen Spann, 90, passed away at 9:12 p.m. on Sunday August 11, 2013 in Crossroads Community Hospital in Mt. Vernon, IL.

She married Carl Spann on November 15, 1945 and he preceded her in death on September 18, 2005.

Aileen was a secretary for the Sesser Water Department for many years.

Survivors include her children Jerry and Judy Jones of Sesser, Il and Carleen and Jim Roberts of Sesser, Il, six grandchildren, Jerry Deon Jones of Sesser, IL, Jana and George Thompson of Sesser, IL, Jon and Shari Jones of Sesser, IL, Jamie Jones of Sesser, IL, Julie and Joe Wilson of Flat Rock, MI, Craig and Tara Roberts of Smyrna, TN, 16 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and two brothers Arthur Gilliam and Roy Eugene Gilliam.

Aileen was a member of the Bear Point Freewill Baptist Church in Sesser, IL.

Funeral services will be on Wednesday August 14, 2013 at 11 a.m. at the Bear Point Freewill Baptist Church in Sesser, IL with Brother Larry Cook and Brother Joe Wilson officiating. Visitation will be on Tuesday August 13, 2013 at the Brayfield-Gilbert Funeral Home in Sesser, IL from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m.

Obituary – Wanda Lee Crowder – Mt. Vernon

Wanda Lee Crowder, 85, of Mt. Vernon, died at 6:55 a.m. Sunday, August 11, 2013 at Stone Bridge Senior Living Center in Benton.

She was born in Whittington on March, 14, 1928, the daughter of William C. and Iva (McCann) Baxter.

She married Victor James “Vic” Crowder on June 24, 1950, and he preceded her in death on March 24, 2012.

Mrs. Crowder was a member of Rescue Freewill Baptist Church in Whittington.

She was a receptionist for several years at a local lumber company.

Mrs. Crowder is survived by two sisters, Venita Kern, Whittington and Barbara Lemons and husband Harold, of Mt. Vernon.  Other survivors include a niece, Loma Baxter, of Whittington; a great niece, Traci Kelley and husband Marty, of Whittington; great-great nephews Daylon, Jace and Lane Kelley and several cousins.

Mrs. Crowder was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brother Charles W. Baxter and a nephew, Charles M. Baxter.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, August 14 at Rescue Free Will Baptist Church in Whittington with Brother Bryant Harriss officiating.  Burial will be in Williams Chapel Cemetery in Ewing.  Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Morton & Johnston Funeral Home in Benton, and after 10 a.m. until the funeral hour on Wednesday at the Church.

Obituary – Karen Sue Gesell – Mt. Vernon

Karen Sue Gesell, 72, of Mt. Vernon, IL, passed away at 9:30 a. m. Saturday, August 10, 2013 at her home.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAShe was born April 16, 1941 to Ray Hill and Wilma (Rethorn) Hill. She married Kenneth G. Gesell in 1959 and he preceded her in death on September 15, 1996.  They had two sons and a daughter.

Karen is survived by her three children, Brad Gesell and wife Susan, Mark Gesell and wife Janet, and Brenda Gesell, all of Benton.  She was blessed with four grandchildren, Ginnie Sloan Gesell, Samantha Gesell, Justin Gesell and Harrison Taylor and two great-grandsons, Sylas Greyson Foster and Kace Oren Mefford.  Additionally, she is survived by two sisters, Francie Smith and husband Paul, Louisville, IL, Connie Pegues, Peoria, IL, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her father Ray, and mother Wilma.

Karen graduated from Rend Lake College in 1984 with her Registered Nursing degree.  She spent her nursing career at and retired from Good Samaritan Hospital in Mt. Vernon.  She was a member of The Order of the Eastern Star.  Karen loved music and sang in the Homecoming Gospel Choir and the Harmony Roses Chorus in Mt. Vernon, which is the local chapter of the Sweet Adelines International.  She loved attending church and spending time with her family and friends.  She also had a special love for animals, especially dogs, with her most recent babies being two feisty Rat Terriers, Sofie and Sadie.

Visitation will be from 5:00 to 8:00 p. m. Tuesday, August 13, 2013 at the Hobbs-Johnson Funeral Home & Crematory in Benton with Eastern Star rites at 7:00 p. m.  Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.  Burial will be in Shiloh Cemetery in Whittington.
