Mr. Kevin Gray, 51 of Akin

Kevin Douglas Gray, age 51 of Akin IL, passed away Saturday, December 3, 2016 at his home..

Kevin was born on February 22, 1965 in Benton, the son of Max M. Gray and Laverne (Mundell) Gray.

Kevin was a BCHS graduate of the Class of 1983. He worked as a laborer with Productive Products in Akin, until its closure. Prior to working at PPI, he worked for the Dallas Morning News newspaper.

Kevin was an avid baseball enthusiast, and enjoyed NASCAR.

He is survived by a sister Crystal Heumann and husband Wilford “Bubby” Heumann of Benton; a brother Kyle Gray of Benton; two nephews Matt Davis and Travis Gray and a niece Alexa Heumann; an uncle Roger Mundell of Benton; and several cousins.

Kevin was preceded in death by his parents, and his paternal and maternal grandparents.

Graveside services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, December 10, 2016 at the Masonic and Odd Fellows Cemetery with Pastor Kurt Sanders officiating. There will be no visitation, family and friends are asked to meet at the cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made in memory of Kevin, to the American Cancer Society.

Cecil Ray Bennett – Benton, IL

BENTON — Cecil Ray Bennett, 73, passed away Sunday morning, Dec. 4, 2016, in SSM Health Good Samaritan Hospital in Mount Vernon.

bennettHe was born Dec. 8, 1942, in Logan, the son of Fred and Lorene (Neunlist) Bennett.

He married Donna (Filkins) on June 10, 1963, and she survives.

Mr. Bennett was a veteran, serving in the Marines.

He was a retired coal miner.

Mr. Bennett is survived by his wife, Donna Bennett of Benton; three children, Rebecca Lynn Bennett Melvin of Benton, Lisa Anne Bennett Filson and husband, Todd Alan Filson, of Du Quoin, Steven Ray Bennett of Pickle City; 10 grandchildren, Meranda Tate and husband, Seth, Mirya Melvin, Angela Darst and husband, Travis, Dallas Filson and wife, Danielle, Alisha Cockrum and husband, Daniel, Alex Melvin, Jessica Stephens and husband, Drew, Jacob Melvin and wife, Halee, Courtney Burroughs and husband, Garrett, and Samantha Bennett; 15 great-grandchildren.

Mr. Bennett was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Richard; and two sisters, Darlene and Yvonne.

Funeral services will be at noon Wednesday, Dec. 7, in the Logan Church of God, with Pastor Earl Young officiating. Burial will be in the Logan Church of God Cemetery. Visitation will be after 10 a.m. Wednesday at the church.

Charles F. Baumgarte – Benton, IL

Charles F. Baumgarte, 93, of Benton, IL, passed away Saturday, Dec. 3, 2016 at StoneBridge Living Center in Benton.

Charles was born on May 3, 1923, in Nason, IL, the son of Henry and Clara (Hawthorne) Baumgarte.

He was married to Frances Baumgarte and she preceded him in death on January 12, 2010.

Charles was an Army veteran, serving during World War II as an ambulance driver in London, England.

He was a truck driver and hauled dirt for the Franklin Hospital when it was built. He worked 35-plus years at Newhouse Lumber Co. in Benton.

He is survived by his daughter Judy Tatum, of Benton, grandson Don Overturf and wife Cheryl, of NinetySix, South Carolina; great-grandson Joshua Overturf and wife Andrea of Orange City, FL; nieces and nephews Loretta Franklin and husband Denzil, Stella M. Gulley and husband Gene, Ronnie Baumgarte and wife Linda, Marilyn Conner, Betty Miles and husband Allen, Paula Williams and husband Kirby, Debbie Kays and husband Mark and Mike Webb and wife Cindy. He is also survived by several nieces and great nephews.

Charles was preceded in death by his parents, by his wife Frances, by brothers and sisters Bob Baumgarte, Paul Baumgarte, Ruth Hall, Geraldine Hutchcraft, Charlene Webb, son-in-law Walter Lee Tatum, niece Brenda Young and nephew Danny Hall.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, December 7, 2016 at Morton & Johnston Funeral Home, in Benton, with the Rev. Bert Mitchell and the Rev. Steven Flach officiating. Burial with military rites conducted by the Benton American Legion and VFW Posts will be in the Masonic & Oddfellows Cemetery in Benton. Macedonia Mayor Wayne Schaffner passes

Wayne Fredrick Schaffner, age 70 of Macedonia IL, passed away Monday, November 28, 2016 at Deaconess Hospital in Evansville, IN.

Wayne’s wishes were to be cremated.

A Memorial Celebration of Life Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, December 4, 2016 at the Leffler Funeral Home of Benton, with Military Honors given by the Benton American Legion Post 280, Benton V.F.W. Post 2671, and the Army National Guard out of Marion, officiating. Visitation will be from 12:00 noon to 2:00 p.m. Sunday at the Leffler Funeral Home of Benton.

Wayne Fredrick Schaffner was born on November 4, 1946 in East St. Louis, IL, the son of Anitta (Fleshing) Schaffner. He married the former Marilyn Gail Fisher on Dec. 31, 1985 and she survives.

Mr. Schaffner was the Mayor of the Village of Macedonia. His prior working career consisted that of being an Iron Worker where he was also a member of the Iron Workers Local 392 located in East St. Louis.

He served his Country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War, and received the Purple Heart.

Wayne enjoyed hunting and fishing.

He is survived by his wife Marilyn Schaffner of Macedonia; his four children: Christina Phillips and husband Steve of Macedonia, Todd Schaffner and wife Barbara of Marissa, IL, Timothy Schaffner and wife Charity of Macedonia, and Krystle Nordhaus and husband Michael of Effingham; twelve grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two brothers: Dennis Schaffner of Greenville, IL, and Michael Schaffner and wife Sue of St. Charles, MO; and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Schaffner was preceded in death by his parents, and a sister-in-law Carol Schaffner.

George W. “Bill” Lockin – Benton, IL

Longtime Benton resident George W. “Bill” Lockin, 93, passed away peacefully on Monday, Nov. 14, 2016 after a brief illness. Bill was living in Brentwood, TN at the time of his death.

bill-lockinA native of of Berea, KY, Bill was born on August 28, 1923 to Earl Wyman and Mary Jane Lockin. He is preceded in death by his parents, brother Earl Wyman Lockin and is wife of 67 years Elwanda Dalton Lockin.

Bill proudly served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. After serving his country for five years Bill returned to the University of Kentucky to complete his education, graduating with a Master’s degree in Mining Engineering.

Upon graduation, Bill was hired by Inland Steel Coal Company in Wheelwright, KY where he worked for 31 years. In 1966 Inland moved operations to Southern Illinois where Bill held several management positions at the Sesser and McLeansboro mines. He retired in 1982 as the Mine Manager of Inland Steel No. 2 in McLeansboro.

Bill and his wife Wanda enjoyed camping in their Airstream camper and were members of the Wally Byam Airstream Caravan Club in Southern Illinois. He was also an active member of the Lion’s Club International, Methodist Men, Benton Booster Club, Benton American Legion an he was an active amateur radio operator.

An incredible and dedicated husband, father and grandfather, Bill was loved and adored by his children, David William Lockin (wife Jennifer Ryan Lockin), of Lilburn, GA, daughter Karen Lockin Bachus, of Rome, GA, and daughter Jane Lockin Hutson (husband John Hutson), of Brentwood, TN; grandchildren Matthew Lockin (wife Melissa Lockin) of Phoenix, AZ, Jonathan Lockin, of Lilburn, GA, Avery Bachus, of Marietta, GA, Madelyn Hutson, of Providence, RI, and Kathryn Hutson, of Brentwood, TN.

A memorial service will be held at Benton First United Methodist Church, 203 Church St. Benton, IL at 11 a.m. on Saturday, December 3, 2016. The eulogy will be given by Jim Muir and the service will be officiated by the Rev. Mark Minor. Visitation with the family will be held that morning from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. with a military internment at Masonic & Oddfellows Cemetery in Benton. Mrs. Della Eickelmann – Christopher

Della L. Eickelmann, 90 of Christopher IL della-eickelmann-picture11272016, passed away peacefully surrounded by family and loved ones on Saturday November 26, 2016.  Della was born April 10, 1926 to John and Millie (Pyles) Martin on Karber’s Ridge in Gallatin County Illinois. Della’s youth was spent on High Knob attending a one room school house with her 10 brothers and sisters.

On January 1, 1944 she married Cecil Cole Eickelmann of Buckner who preceded her in death. They had three children, Gary Cole, Raymond Dale and Gaila Marie.  They shared a happy life together and enjoyed square dancing, gardening, fishing, spending time with loved ones.  Della worked as a cook at Christopher, Herrin, and Benton hospitals and as a seamstress for many years. She enjoyed playing pinochle with the same group of ladies for 54 years.  Della loved cooking, canning, crocheting and quilting.

She is survived by her children Raymond Eickelmann of Valier and Gaila Carpenter of Buckner; Grandchildren: Theresa Eickelmann of Centralia, John Eickelmann of Valier, Nicole Pace of Union KY and Mackenzie Stephenson of Marion;  Great Grandchildren:  Drew, Samantha, Ginger, Jacob, Makaylah, Shelby, Riley and Anne-Marie. Brother William Floyd Martin of Marion, and sister Mary Barker of Jamestown, Tennesee, as well as many nieces and nephews.

Preceding Della in death are her parents, husband Cecil, sons Cecil Cole and Gary Cole. Grandson Richard Eickelmann and siblings Frank Martin, Annabelle Carnahan, Lawrence Martin, Phoebe Davis, A.B . “Pepper” Martin, John Martin, Rosetta Colbert and Treva Chisler.

Funeral services will be on Wednesday November 30, 2016 at 11:00 A.M. at the Gilbert Funeral Home in Christopher.  Burial will be in Harrison Cemetery in Buckner. Visitation will be on Tuesday November 29, 2016 from 6:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. at the funeral home.

Jack Lee Perkins – Benton, IL

Jack Lee Perkins, of Benton, IL, passed away Saturday, November 26, 2016 at the home of his son with both of his sons at his bedside.

Services will be at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 29, 2016 at Morton & Johnston Funeral Home in Benton, with the Rev. Carl Cottingham officiating.

Burial with Masonic Rites will be conducted at Masonic & Oddfellows Cemetery, in Benton. Visitation will be after 9 a.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Alice Diane Whitten – Benton

Mrs. Alice Diane Whitten, age 73 of Benton IL, passed away Wednesday, November 23, 2016 at her home.  She was born on April 17, 1943 in Chicago Heights, IL, the daughter of William Singleton and Sadie (Maki) Singleton. She first married Vernon Paul Denton in 1963 and he preceded her in death in 1972. She would later marry Ron Whitten in 1976, and he preceded her in death in 1996.

diane-whittenHer working career was that of a LPN at the Illinois Veteran’s Home in Manteno. She and her late husband Ron would also volunteer at the Veteran’s Home. Due to their commitment and dedication as volunteers, they were invited to the Governor’s Mansion for recognition of their achievements as volunteers.

Diane loved her family, and especially enjoyed getting to spend time with them. She was an avid St. Louis Cardinal fan.

She is survived by her three children: Cathy Campbell of Aurora, MO, Vern Denton and wife Melanie of Benton, IL, and Paul Denton and wife Inita of Flower Mound, TX; Eleven Grandchildren; Seventeen Great-Grandchildren; her siblings: Dolly of Tennessee, Dale of Georgia, Ron of North Carolina, Dorcus of Illinois, Helen of Minnesota, Sharon of Illinois, and Rich of Illinois; and several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Whitten was preceded in death by her parents, two husbands, and two sisters: Carol and Patsie.

A Memorial Celebration of Life Service will be held at 5:00 p.m. Wednesday, November 30, 2016 at the Leffler Funeral Home of Benton, with Paul Denton officiating. Visitation will be from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Wednesday at the Leffler Funeral Home.  Memorial contributions may be made to the Illinois Warrior Assistance Program.

Barbara Wyant- Benton IL

Mrs.  Barbara J. Wyant, 81, of Benton IL, passed away at 9:45 p.m., Friday,  November 25, 2016, at Helia Healthcare of Benton.

She was born on October 11, 1935, to William “Willie” and Ida Mae (Poynor) Heifner in Macedonia, IL.  Barbara was self employed as a babysitter and caretaker. She married John J. Wyant and he preceded her in death.

She was a member of Plasters Grove Free Will Baptist Church in Thompsonville, IL. Barbara was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was known to take care of children she had claimed to be her own. She would always make time to spend with her family and friends. If you left her home hungry it was your own fault.

Barbara is survived by her children, Jack Wyant and wife Jackie of Akin, IL, Ron Wyant of Dale, IL, Carla Dare and husband Jeff of Freeman Spur, IL and Beverly Wyant and Susie Minton of Herrin, IL; one brother, Jim Heifner and wife Patty of Akin, IL and one sister, Darlene Roberts and husband John of Dale, IL;  and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, William Martin and Ida Mae Heifner, husband, John J. Wyant, three brothers, John Heifner, Carlton Heifner and Charles Heifner and two grandchildren, Jeffery Conner and Tommy Sullivan.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Pate Funeral Home.

Mr. William “Bill” Daniel McPhail-Royalton

Mr. William “Bill” Daniel McPhail, 73 of Royalton, IL passed away on November 23, 2016 at Herrin Hospital.  He was born on December 28, 1942 in Royalton, IL to December 28, 1942 in Royalton, IL to Pete McPhail and Eva (Hammett) McPhail,who preceded him in death.

He had worked in retail for over 30 years, and then served as librarian and director of the Royalton Public Library.  He was a member of the St Aloysius Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Royalton In lieu of flowers memorials can be made to the Royalton Public Library or the St Aloysius Ladies Sodality.

Survivors include one sister in law, Jessica McPhail of Florida; Neices and Nephews; Raylene (Carl) Stafko of Royalton, Danny Jerrells of Royalton, Greg (Robyn) McPhail of Florida, Kathy Towers of Christopher, Ronda (Forrest) Moreland of Florida, Michele (Scott) Fry of Florida, Dianna (Frank) Stubits of St Louis, Sharon (Jerry) Zilske of St Louis and many great and great great nieces and nephews.

Also surviving was a special friend Kathy Beegle of Benton

Also preceding him in death were; brother Tom McPhail, sisters Sue Carol McPhail, Ruth Jerrells, sister and brother-in-law Jean and Tom Towers, brother-in-law and his wife Ray and Roberta Jerrels, two nieces Vicki Kincade and Carolyn Jerrells, and one nephew Ricky Towers.

A memorial mass will take place on Saturday December 3, 2016 at 11:00 A.M., at the St Aloysius Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Royalton.  Father Urban Osuji will be officiating.  Interment will follow at Miners Cemetery in Royalton.
