Betty Jean Vordtriede — Sesser, IL

Betty Jean Vordtriede, 88, of Sesser passed away on October 10, 2018 at her home.

She was born on December 1, 1929 in Gary, IN to Alfred and Freida (Dame) VanHoorebeke. She married Kenneth Vordtriede and he preceded her in death.

She is survived by her children Freda (Steve) Galloway of Sesser, Louis Gower of Panama City Beach, FL, BJ Schlemmer of Red Bud, IL, and Linda Lee Gower of Chicago; and 22 grandchildren, and several great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, three daughters Sherry VanWinter, Judy Robinson, and Mary Jane Gower, three sons Donald Robinson, Darrell Gower, and Billy Ray Robinson, seven brothers Donald VanHoorebeke, Jessie VanHoorebeke, Loren VanHoorebeke, Clarence VanHoorebeke, Frank VanHoorebeke, Darrell VanHoorebeke, and Kenny VanHoorebeke.

Funeral services will be on Saturday October 13, 2018 at Noon at the Brayfield-Gilbert Funeral Home in Sesser with Brother Larry Cook officiating. Visitation will be on Saturday from 10:00 Am until the time of the service at Noon. Burial will be at Maple Hill Cemetery in Sesser.

Johnnie James Terry – Sesser, IL

It is with great sadness that the family of Johnnie Terry announces his passing after a hard fought battle with pancreatic cancer, on Wednesday, October 10, 2018 at the age of 63 years.

Johnnie will be lovingly remembered by his beloved wife Merrilee and his children Laura (Shane) Sieveking and Devon Webb (Jerod Corn).  Johnnie will also be forever remembered by his step-son Chad Galloway and his grandchildren Kelcey Jones (Christopher Phillips), Peyton Sieveking, Parker Sieveking, Addison Sieveking, Malia Webb, Jaycee Webb, Brody Corn, and one great granddaughter Emery Grace Phillips.

Johnnie started driving and building race cars when still a teenager.  He never lost the love of the sport with several track championships to prove it.  John also loved old cars, especially old Volkswagens.  He was an avid fisherman and just liked hanging out in the garage with friends and his dogs.  He will be sadly missed.

Visitation will be on Monday October 15, 2018 from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM at the Brayfield-Gilbert Funeral Home in Sesser.  A graveside service will be on Tuesday October 16 at 10:00 AM at the Maple Hill Cemetery in Sesser with Lito Tacderas officiating.  Friends and family are asked to meet at the cemetery.

Robert Willard “Junior” Corn — Benton, Illinois

 

Robert Willard “Junior” Corn, age 89, of Benton, passed away Monday, September 24, 2018, in Hackley Hospital in Muskegon, Michigan.

Memorial Celebration of Life Services will be held on Saturday, October 13, 2018, from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., at the Benton American Legion Post #280 of Benton, where Military Honors will be at 3:30 p.m. by the Benton American Legion Post #280 and V.F.W. Post #2671. Family and friends are asked to share memories of Robert at the Celebration of Life Services.

Local arrangements are under the direction of the Leffler Funeral Home of Benton.

Private family burial will take place at a future date in the Masonic & Odd Fellows Cemetery of Benton.

Robert married the love of his life, Mary (Knight) Corn on November 3, 1984. They celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary a week prior to her death on November 9, 2009.

He was a retired veteran, having served in the Korean War and was awarded a good conduct medal with a honorable discharge.

He formerly worked as a coal miner, having worked with Old Ben Coal Company.

He was a family man and loved all of them very much. He always loved playing pranks on everyone and spent most of his days trying to figure out “who to get next” lol. He loved traveling, gambling, fishing, piddling around in his garage, and most of all playing with his little Jack Russell Terrier (Jackie).

Mr. Corn is survived by four children: Judy and Pat Beckman of New Era, Michigan, Brenda Grech of West City, Rick and Diane Corn of Paducah, KY, Barbara and Tony Lopez of Elgin, IL; eight step-children: Randy and Debbie Manning of West Frankfort, Ronnie and Faye Manning of Benton, Donna and Susan Shurtz of Phoenix, Arizona, Bill Manning from Florida, Troy and Kelly Knight of Benton, Jim Dunagan of Benton, Cathie and Robert Cochrum of Burleson, Texas, and Kim and Robbie Cochrum of Logan; 33 grandchildren and 49 great-grandchildren; his best friends, Ray and Margaret Smith.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Julie Lynn Corn; a son David Corn; wife Mary Corn; his parents Willard and Violet Corn; two sisters Ruth Flanagan and Fay Sentel; a brother Lee “Bud” Corn; and a son-in-law Jerry Grech.

Robert “Junior” will be missed by so many. He was a great man and a wonderful father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was always there for anyone that needed a helping hand.

Veronica “Vonny” Brewer – Sesser, IL

Veronica ‘Vonny” Brewer, 86, of Sesser passed away on October 7, 2018.

She was born on January 7, 1932 in Earlestown, England to George and Kathleen (Garrity) Plant.  She married Charles Ray Brewer on December 3, 1949 in Warrington, England and he preceded her in death on January 27, 2009.

She is survived by her children John (Barbara) Brewer of Benton, IL, Linda Chaplain of Sesser, IL, Robert (Betty) Brewer of Dothan, AL, Diana (David) Rogers of Sesser, IL, and Tracy (Meggan) Brewer of Navarre, FL; grandchildren Angela (Bruce) Jilek, Andrea (Jason) Sanders, Kimberly Kirkpatrick, Jay (Emily) Spann, Kendra (Ross) Henry, Clinton Brewer, Curtis (Lisa) Brewer, Aaron Brewer, Ashley Rogers, Allison Rogers, Chase Brewer, Christian Brewer, and Preston Brewer; great grandchildren Zoee Jilek, Colin Sanders, Kathelene Sanders, Piper Spann, Travis Henry, Reese Henry, Kacy Brewer, Will Brewer, Ryan Brewer, Jenesys Jackson, Jada Jackson, and Chance Whitehead.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.

Funeral services will be on Friday October 12, 2018 at 1:00 PM at the Brayfield-Gilbert Funeral Home in Sesser with Brother Kirk Packer officiating.  Visitation will be on Friday from 11:00 AM until the time of the service at 1:00 PM at the funeral home.  Burial will be at Horse Prairie Cemetery in Sesser.

Robert “Bobby” J. Smith — McLeansboro, IL

Robert “Bobby” J. Smith, 67, of McLeansboro, passed away at 5:40 p.m., on Tuesday, October 2, 2018, at St. Louis University Hospital, St., Louis, MO.

  Bobby was born on October 4, 1950, to John and Wilma (Summers) Smith in Tucson, AZ.

He was a loving brother and enjoyed taking trips to the park, watching country-western shows and eating cherry chocolates.

 Bobby is survived by his three brothers, John K. (Kathy) Smith, Jim Smith and Don (Kathy) Weston; one sister, Patricia (Roger) Wheeler, and many nieces and nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by parents, John and Wilma Smith; one brother, David Weston.

Geneva Zalenski Hines Smith

Geneva Zalenski Hines Smith, age 93, of West City, IL, passed away at 8:12 p.m. Sunday, September 30, 2018 at the SSM Good Samaritan Hospital of Mt. Vernon.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Friday, October 5, 2018 at the Leffler Funeral Home of Benton, with Rev. Bert Mitchell officiating.  Burial will be in the Masonic & Odd Fellows Cemetery of Benton. Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Friday at the Leffler Funeral Home of Benton.

Geneva was born on December 9, 1924 in Franklin County, IL, the daughter of Frank Zalenski and Dora (Wascoski) Zalenski. She married Robert Eugene Hines, Sr. on December 24, 1946, and he preceded her in death on December 21, 1951 in the Orient #2 Mine explosion. She would later marry Herbert Warren Smith in 1953, and he preceded her in death in 2001.

She formerly worked cleaning motels and worked for twenty plus years in cleaning and housekeeping at Union Hospital and for Dr. Fox.

Geneva enjoyed watching television and loved animals, and especially enjoyed spending time with her family.

Survivors include, her son, Robert Eugene Hines, Jr. and wife Karen of Benton; four daughters: Jo Ann Stewart and husband Rod of Benton, Gloria Overturf and husband George of Benton, Marsha Kay Eubanks of Benton, and Marie Smith of West City; twelve grandchildren; twenty-three great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by her parents; two husbands; an infant daughter; a grandson; two great-grandsons; and three brothers.

Donnie Keith Brooks

Donnie Keith Brooks, age 75, of Ewing, passed away at 7:33 p.m. Sunday, September 30, 2018 at SSM Good Samaritan Hospital of Mt. Vernon.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, October 4, 2018 at the Leffler Funeral Home of Benton. Burial will be in the Opdyke Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Thursday at the Leffler Funeral Home of Benton.

Mr. Brooks was born on September 22, 1943 in Macedonia, IL, the son of Warner Brooks and Florence (Winemiller) Brooks. He married the former Vonda Allen on March 19, 1964, and she survives.

Donnie was a former oil field laborer, also he worked as a farm hand.

He was a member of the Macedonia United Methodist Church.

Donnie enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening.  Most of all he enjoyed spending time with his grandson.

Survivors include his wife Vonda Brooks of Ewing; his son Brian Keith Brooks of Ewing; a grandson Joshua Keith Brooks; and a great-grandson Joshua Keith Brooks, Jr.; four nieces: Cheryl K. Lampley, Billie S. Higgerson, Gail Ellett, Becky Markham and husband Ben; two nephews: William E. Lampley, Jr. and wife Michele, Steven C. Lampley and wife Daredan; and several great-nieces and nephews.

Mr. Brooks was preceded in death by his parents; and two sisters: Kathryn Parrish and Hazel Lampley.

Bobby Lee Kent – Whittington, IL

Bobby Lee Kent, age 74, of Whittington, IL passed away at 8:26 p.m. Sunday, September 30, 2018 at his home.

Mr. Kent was born on October 28, 1943 in Benton, IL, the son of Vernie L. Kent and Florine R. (Vaughn) Kent. He married the former Helen L. Christian on June 5, 1965, and she survives.
He honorably served on active duty in the United States Marine Corps

Bobby was a former Transportation service and maintenance worker with ABEX.  He was the former president of the U.S. Steel Workers Local #7234.

He was a member of the West City Church of God.

Bobby enjoyed gardening, especially growing vegetables and flowers. He also enjoyed attending and worshipping with his church family.

Survivors include, his loving wife of 53 years, Helen L. Kent of Whittington; a daughter Beverly S. Batres and husband Julio of Crown Point, IN; two granddaughters: Samantha and Nicole Batres, both of Crown Point, IN; three sisters: Merita Weiser of Syracuse, IN, Mary Little of Lake Station, IN, Sarah Dhall of Canton, MI; and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Kent was preceded in death by his parents; and three brothers: Jessie Kent, Allen Kent, and Keith Kent.

Lucille Moore — Benton, IL

Lucille  Moore, 95, of Benton, IL,  passed away at 11:40 a.m., on Saturday, September 29, 2018, at Helia Healthcare of Benton, IL.

She was born on March 11, 1923, to Vern “Pete” and Addie (Beaty) Bauer. She married Paul Moore on April 5, 1942. Mrs. Moore was a member of North Benton Baptist Church.

She was a beautician with a shop in her home or many years. She was a wonderful cook, often cooking for farmhands during the summer.

Mrs. Moore is survived by one daughter, Paula Lainfiesta, one grandson, Damian (Beth) Lainfiesta, one great grand-daughter, Raeann Lainfiesta, and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Vern and Addie Bauer, husband of 54 years, Paul Moore, twin sister Louise Doubbleaire, and brother, Frederick Bauer.

 Graveside service with be held at Jackson Grove Cemetery, Benton, IL, on October 8, 2018, at 10:00 a.m., with burial to follow.

Marjorie Ruth Mansker-Lochhead-Brooks, 98, of Benton, IL passed away at 6:24 p.m., on Sunday, September 30, 2018, at Stonebridge Nursing and Rehab Center.

She was born on March 18, 1920, to Noah and Mary (Warren) Mansker in Perryville, MO. Ruth retired as a Supply Clerk.

Ruth is survived by her two daughters, Carol (Harold) Hoffman of Union, MO, Marjorie (Robert) Buntin of Thompsonville, IL; two granddaughters, Sheri R. Freeman  and Kelly (Mark) Balliet; four grandsons, Scott (Shari) Buntin, Steven (Heather) Buntin, Sam (Cindy) Buntin and Mark (Jill) Hoffman; 11 great grandchildren, Caleb, Alex, Mat, Megan, Kira, Tyler, Nikki, Dani, Jaidyn, Mark Jr. and Brooklyn; and several great-great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; first husband, Vernon “Spookey” Lochhead; second husband J.E. Brooks; four brothers, Vernon, Lloyd, Jack and Joe Mansker; one sister, Frieda Tudor.
